Cantor Respects Limbaugh’s ‘Conservative Voice,’ But Rejects His Use Of Hitler Comparisons

On Bloomberg’s Political Capital, host Al Hunt asked House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA) whether he agrees with hate radio host Rush Limbaugh’s assertion that “Adolf Hitler, like Barack Obama, also ruled by dictate.” Limbaugh also compared the administration’s health care logo to a swastika.

Cantor hemmed and hawed in response. “Rush Limbaugh, other personalities…have opinions,” he said, emphasizing that the Republican Party is a “party of inclusion” that has room for voices like Limbaugh. But Cantor — the only Jewish Republican member of the House — clarified that he does not condone the use of Hitler “in any discussion of politics” and such comparisons “are not, I think, very helpful.”

Hunt pressed: “So it was inappropriate for Limbaugh to say that?” Cantor responded:

CANTOR: You know, look Al, I think Rush Limbaugh is a conservative voice for America. A lot of the things he says I agree with.

HUNT: But not that?

CANTOR: Right. I don’t condone the use of the word Hitler.

Watch it:

Steve Benen comments, “I suppose Eric Cantor deserves some credit” for his “mild and indirect rebuke. I’m just not sure if he’ll stick to it.” TPM notes that Cantor’s office is trying to highlight his independence from Rush by pointing reporters to the story.

Last week, Cantor’s spokesman said it was “inappropriate” to display a prominent photograph at a GOP rally comparing health care reform to the Nazi concentration camp in Dachau.

Cantor is a whore. he may be a Jew, but first and foremost, he is a whore. As a faithful Jew, he should have pointed to the awful signs and demanded they be brought down – but he didn’t. His office first stated he didn’t see them (Boehner too), but that was also a lie. Cantor will be sucking Rush’s kock on TeeVee very soon. Apology in 5…4…3…2…1…..

Yet, as soon as Rush attacks Cantor for speaking, even mildly, out against him, Canter will retract what he said. Despite what Rush, Steel, or Faux News says, Rush is the real leader of the party and that makes me shudder.

Sorry, Eric. You can’t have it both ways. Anyone who uses Hitler and the Nazi Party to reference what Obama is alledgely doing to the Country (according to Limbaugh and the rest of the right wing whackjobs) is at best willfully ignorant of history or at worst an out and out anti-semite. Obama is “more African in his roots than he is American” and is “behaving like an African colonial despot”

Richard Stallman, it was Prescott Bush who was convicted of conspiring with Hitler. And it was GHW and W who cavorted with criminals who lied to congress and gave weapons to terrorist and then had waged the largest power grabs in our history. We lived with that insanity for 8 years because people like you were too stupid to look at their own leaders. Now you can just say you’re sorry for your stupidity and STFU before you make yourself look any more ignorant, it that’s even possible.

  68. Xisithrus says:

The Weimar Republic (De-WeimarRepublic.ogg Weimarer Republik (help·info), IPA: [?va?mar? repu?bli?k]) is the name given by historians to the parliamentary republic established in 1919 in Germany to replace the imperial form of government, named after Weimar, the place where the constitutional assembly took place. Its official name was still Deutsches Reich (German Empire), however. Following World War I, the republic emerged from the German Revolution in November 1918. In 1919, a national assembly convened in the city of Weimar, where a new constitution for the German Reich was written, to be adopted on 11 August. This liberal democracy eventually lapsed in the early 1930s, leading to the ascent of the NSDAP and Adolf Hitler in 1933.

If your going to make comparisons between Germany and the USoA today, Stallman, which I think is inane, at least know the history.

Our Conservatives friend’s continual references to this period display their complete lack of historic perspective, and a lack of reverence for the human spirit that endured this diabolic period.

  98. DICKERSON3870 says:

RE: Last week, Cantor’s spokesman said it was “inappropriate” to display a prominent photograph at a GOP rally comparing health care reform to the Nazi concentration camp in Dachau.

MY COMMENT: If that’s the best he can do, it might have been better not to comment at all. I just don’t think “inappropriate” is going have any effect on the ‘teabag’ crowd. “Inappropriate” is more like wearing white after Labor Day (like half the population) or using your dinner fork rather than your salad fork to eat your salad. “Inappropriate” is like “hey, it’s no big deal”. It reminds me of “W” being briefed about a month before 9/11 on bin Laden being determined to attack the U.S. and him telling the briefer “ok, now you’ve covered your ass”.

I think at a minimum it was ‘offensive’ and/or ‘repugnant’. More specifically, it was terribly inconsiderate of people who lost family members, friends, etc in the Holocaust. Fortunately, I did not but I’m still having difficulty getting that horrible image out of my mind and I’m very disturbed by the way it was used (misused).

I just don’t understand how someone can “use” (misuse) the Holocaust (especially a photo like that) in a debate over reforming health care. I also do not understand how a rational person can think that it makes a legitimate point in support of their position. Do they think the ’shock value’ alone is somehow beneficial to their cause? I just don’t get it. It seems really weird and creepy to me.

    Rush rules ?

Kind of a strange rock band for a conservative guy.

Wouldn’t Ted Nugent be more your style ?

Was “Rush” the street name for amyl nitrite?

And “poppers”. Those were the good old days. I don’t know how we survived. :)

  103. jbrantow says:

so did cantor discuss why he stood silent at the wingnut zealot mob gatherng last friday……just a few hundred feet from a massive banner of a photo of bodies piled up from dachau? What a disgusting example of a Jew and a human being. Cantor is nothing but a limbaugh butt licker.

Never did any “Poppers” but I did experience butyl rubber tires in the 60’s. The tread was worn off after 5000 miles but even when they were slick they gripped snow as good as spiked tires!

  108. Jackie says:

Britney Cantor got dropped by Gov. McConnell and won the election. Cantor is playing both sides as he sucks up to the Racist Limbaugh while trying to defend the hateful comments about Jews. Yes Cantor is Jewish and will accept what his fellow racist Republicans say. Who knows in time they might just clear out the Jewish Law Makers. History has shown that many supported those they hated their race but it was for the money they were given. Money will make Americans/Law Makers take the gold tooth out their love one’s mouth.

    the word hitler…?

that sure is a weird way to put it…

not a problem with the illogical, unnecessary, uninformed comparisons with the man, just don’t use that word… huh?

  112. Ape-Man says:

No Cantor doesn’t want people to find out who he secretly idolizes, so he likes to keep the actual hitler references at an arm band’s length. It’s all part of the fascist’s handbook.

  118. CarmanK says:

Limbaugh deserves no respect. He is not a conservative. He is a “shock jock” for hire. He is a racist and spews hatred over the airwaves in the name of Freedom of Speech. But if his sponsors, american businesses, did not pay the bills, there would be Limbaugh conservative or otherwise.

  119. candide says:

The Nazi/Fascist regimes of the ’30s and ’40s were evil for three simple reasons: First, they oppressed minorities–Jews, gypsies, gays and other non-white, non-Christians. Second, they were fanatically nationalistic and epansive in their territorial goals, attempting conquest over all of their neighbors. Thirdly, they were anti-democratic and authoritarian, suppressing political dissent within their own states.

These were the real, palpable evils of Naziism. Some Republicans would have us believe that the evils are social planning on the order of the social democracies of Sweden and other progressive nations. This is the most bizarre distortion of history I have seen in my lifetime. Can anyone cite how the Democratic administration has in any way imitated the evils of Hitler and his ilk? Amazing!

@ 85. dbadass says: “Rush rules.” Wait just a minute. Maybe I misunderstood. Did you mean that weird inhalant shit that misfit kids and gay cruisers used to be into? November 8th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Dang it, dbadass, you and Shayne got this whole thing wrong. conman wasn’t asking for poppers or some glue or spray paint for a huff session. she just wanted us to send her some rules really quick like. just because she says ‘rush’ don’t mean she’s referring to some junkie dj getting off in the john during a commericial break.

Yeah, that seems a rather bland thing to say, and I’d think that he does like to keep the hitler references at arm’s length, at the very least, but probably not because he idolizes hitler or any other of the nazi leadership. It wouldn’t surprise me to find out that he has been in more than one congregation with Holocaust/Shoah survivors, hence he is acquainted with that history in a slightly more direct way than a lot of other people. Further, as an ardent supporter of Israel, I suspect that when he thinks of the nazis, if he does, it’s with contempt.

On the other hand, he’s hoist on a petard of his own making.

If he praises the poster, he diminishes himself with his own family and people he knows, because they all know that comparing HCR to something as horrific as the death camps and the other nazi apparatus is crazy; in fact, it doesn’t just diminish him, it reduces the entire horror of that period by making it a political football, a propagandist’s cliche.

At the same time, if he condemns the poster, he loses traction with the Republipimp base; they don’t care about the seriousness with which Eric views the matter, they wanna use the Holocaust, or any other particularly vicious bit of history, like the Gulag or Pol Pot’s killing fields, as an agitation and propaganda battering ram against the Democrats. Who gives a shit about decency and civility, this is about politics.

So, poor little Eric (snark snark) is trapped between the old rock and a hard place; he can please his family or he can please his political masters, or he can try to walk a really fine line between the two. Tough shit.

Oh, I don’t think Blimpo restricts himself to racial hatred, DH. He’s for ethnic and political hatred too, plus any other hatred that’ll stir the shit. Mostly he’s about selling advertising time for his radio syndicate though, and hatred works.
