Casey Warns Against Anti-Muslim Backlash: ‘It Would Be A Shame If Our Diversity Became A Casualty’
This morning on separate Sunday show appearances, the Army chief of staff — Gen. George Casey — expressed his “concern” that speculation about the motivations of Ft. Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan may “cause a backlash against some of our Muslim soldiers.” Casey said he has instructed his Army leaders to “be on the lookout for that.” On CNN’s State of the Union, he added:
As great a tragedy as this was, it would be a shame if our diversity became a casualty as well. [...] I worry that again that speculation could cause things that we don’t want to see happen.
On ABC, Casey emphasized that the diversity of our Army and society as a whole “gives us all strength.” Watch it:
Some of the “speculation” that Casey is concerned about has emanated from right-wing circles. For example, the hosts of Fox & Friends suggested that “special debriefings” and “special screenings” of Muslim soldiers should be considered. Also, Allen West — a Republican congressional candidate and Iraq war vet — used the murders to claim the “enemy is infiltrating our military.”
On a trip to the United Arab Emirates, Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said, “Obviously, we object to — and do not believe — that anti-Muslim sentiment should emanate from this.” Speaking with a group of women university students, she said, “This was an individual who does not, obviously, represent the Muslim faith.”
Earlier this week, right-wing columnist Ralph Peters claimed that “political correctness killed those patriotic Americans” because military officials pander to “America-haters.” Reacting to this common right-wing argument, Sen. Lindsey Graham said on CBS that Hasan’s “actions do not reflect on the Islamic Muslim faith.” He added, “This man’s actions reflect on him. And if we missed some signals on him that we should have known, great. But let’s don’t take this to a level that we should not.” Graham concluded, “Let’s don’t accuse people for giving him a pass because he’s a Muslim because I don’t think there’s any evidence of that.”

I realize that I may be verbally eviscerated for this…but quite frankly, I couldn’t care less.
Am I the only person who finds these remarks tragically ironic in light of the reports that Hasan himself has been subjected to ethnic and religious slurs by his supposed comrades-in-arms in the years following 9/11? I for one am inclined to believe these reports…one of my extended family members, a retired longtime military officer, admits quite frankly and unashamedly that he’s always been prejudiced towards Arabs and Moslems. I’ve personally heard him use at least two of the slurs with which people commonly target that group. The fact that he’s so honest about this is one of the reasons why I’m inclined to think that he’s far from being alone in this…especially since he is, as you might have guessed, a Republican whose political views definitely lean neoconservative. (The military, for that matter, is not known for being a bastion of tolerance.) My family member tries to justify his views by claiming that he objects to the way in which women are oppressed in the Middle East — but he conveniently chooses to ignore the fact that his taste on humor makes it all too clear his own views regarding gender equality are far from enlightened!
As I posted on another message board earlier today, if some of Hasan’s supposed comrades-in-arms — perhaps people upon whom his life might have depended if he were ever stationed in a combat zone — have been creating a hostile environment, is it so hard to believe that this may have played a role in his mental state and his subsequent decisions? I for one don’t think so — when you insist on treating someone like an enemy, there’s a good chance that this person will eventually become angry enough to oblige you by becoming your enemy even if this was not his original intention. I’m not trying to excuse or justify what Hasan did, because harassment is not a sufficient reason for murder. However, if Hasan had reason to believe that simply being a Muslim in post-911 America was enough to make him persona non grata in the military, it’s not all that hard to see how that might have contributed to his mental state.
What I find savagely and ironically tragic about this (in addition to the loss of lives) is the fact that Hasan has essentially fulfilled the very assumptions which he resented his comrades for making about him — and he’s also made it that much more likely that other American Muslims serving in the armed forces will be viewed with suspicion and subjected to harassment. Even if there is truth to the allegations that Hasan was beginning to show signs of sympathy to radical Islamic ideals, the question remains…is it possible that this was at least in part because some of the people around him refused to believe that he could be both a loyal American soldier and a Muslim?
