ThinkFast: November 9, 2009

Diana DeGette and Bart Stupak

The historic health care legislation passed by the House over the weekend included an amendment that sharply restricts “the availability of coverage for abortions.” Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) said she has collected “more than 40 signatures from House Democrats vowing to oppose any final bill that includes the amendment — enough to block passage.”

As chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) will lead an investigation into the Fort Hood shootings to look for “signs of ‘Islamic extremism.’” Lieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”

Former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev said that President Obama should begin a withdrawal from Afghanistan. “I think that what’s needed is not additional forces,” he said, “this is something that we discussed, too, years ago but we decided not to do it. And I think our experience deserves attention.”

President Obama is reportedly nearing a decision to send up to 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. “This is not going to be an easy sell [to the American public],” one administration official told McClatchy.

The three biggest banks to exit the government’s TARP program — Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s investment bank — “are set to pay record bonuses this year,” totaling $29.7 billion. “It doesn’t seem as if even political threat, disastrous PR, envy, rising unemployment rates and home repossessions is enough to get any of these people to refuse the bonuses they have ‘earned,’” said Paul Hodgson of Corporate Library.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is urging banks to loosen up credit at a time “of mounting unemployment, rising company bankruptcies and increasing regulatory oversight.” Tight credit is a “serious problem,” Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist at Goldman Sachs says. “This could keep growth significantly weaker.”

“Growing concerned that the Congressional timetable for passing a health care overhaul could slip into next year,” the White House “is stepping up pressure on the Senate for quick action, with President Obama appearing Sunday in the Rose Garden to call on senators to ‘”take up the baton and bring this effort to the finish line.’” For now, the Senate’s bill is “stalled while budget analysts assess its overall costs.”

Over the weekend, the Iraqi parliament approved a crucial election lawby a wide margin after weeks of deadlock, which had raised fears that the parliamentary election might have to be delayed.” Obama said that the agreement advanced the “political progress” to “allow for the orderly and responsible transition of American combat troops out of Iraq by next September.”

President Obama will hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today as the Israeli-Palestinian peace effort continues to flounder. One major issue expected to arise is that of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories, which the administration has softened its line on in recent weeks.

And finally: It turns out that the Twitter feed of Levi Johnston is a fake. After actor William Shatner performed a dramatic reading of some of his tweets on Conan O’Brien’s show, the Tonight Show host has apologized for the error, saying, “I’d like to apologize personally to Levi Johnston and his lawyer and publicist for misrepresenting him in any way. Levi is clearly a great American. We wish him the best of luck as he trains for his upcoming naked photo shoot.”

Arrest them all. This is such garbage.

  3. Pilotshark says:

Gee Joe how about waiting for a investigation to be completed before you shoot your mouth off about terrorist acts.

  4. Mugsy says:

The Fort Hood massacre was more the result of PTSD (even without haven’t been in combat, but from both hazing and listening to returning soldiers horror stories) than it was a “deliberate act of terrorism”.

But reactionary Right-wing paranoids like Lieberman see every “Moos-lim” as a “terrorist” first and a person second.

The REAL investigation needs to be in how the stress of two wars without end may be affecting the mental health of our troops.

  5. Peter C says:

Lieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”

Grrrrrrrrr. Tell me again why we should have this guy in our caucus? Tell me again why he’s the chairman of this committee? It’s like we decided to pretend he was an optometrist and we were his patient and then we gave him an assortment of sharp sticks to jab in our eyes.

  6. lionel054 says:

Lieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”

Why is Lieberman doing this.? It wasn’t a terrorist attack, it was a mad man attack. There must be something in that fox news water than turns people to dishonest, intolerant pigs… or maybe it’s just Lieberman.

  7. House of Roberts says:

“Lieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be ‘the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.’”

I wouldn’t put it past Lie-berman to recommend internment camps for Arab-Americans, because of how well it has worked for Israel, in the West Bank and Gaza.

Personally, I think that it’s a terrorist act to delay health care coverage for millions of American’s just so that you can line your pockets with a little more blood money… but that’s just me

  10. aquarius2 says:

Lieberman’s uncalled for comments about terrorism should be reason to force out of his head of committee. I could understand an investigation into why this man was not released from the military but Terrorism????

  11. Marie says:

Look for the Lieberman opinion to be the meme of Fox and other repugniscum – this is a “terrorist act” committed on the Obama administration watch.
They are linking the mosque where the funeral of Hasan’s mother in May of 2001 to the 9/11 highjackers, so therefore, this was terrorism.
Convoluted reasoning is the hallmark of conservatives.

Why is it that Pro-Lifers oppose funding for abortions, but support funding for the death penalty; support funding for war? Why? Because it’s not about being “Pro-Life”. It’s about manipulating people for political gain.

  14. EnnuiDivine says:

    (yawn)

    ‘Morning.

It’s a tossup as to whether the Stupak Amendment makes it into the final bill. Despite Boehner demanding to Rangel that the Senate version include it (which prompted Rangel to cry “Shame!” on Boehner’s sense of ethics….), there are only Dems in the senate that identify as “pro-life”. With Lieberman vowing a filabuster, passing the bill through civil, traditional means is a moot point. Because of Sen. Droopy Dog’s insistence on lowering the standard of living for an entire nation, reconciliation is the only means. And even though the majority leader is one of the “pro-lifers”, it’s unlikely the amendment would carry over. Expect the bill to reinforce the Hyde Amendment, but not go further.

Sen. Droopy Dog’s bias is showing. Ft. Hood shooter is a Muslim. Therefore, he must have been acting on orders from al-Qaeda/was a sleeper agent/committed religiously motivated terrorism. John Russell killed 5 at Camp Liberty. Where was the instant judgment that Russell committed an act of Christian Terrorism? It’s absent because that motive was absent, like it was at Ft. Hood. There is scant evidence at best to show that Hasan did what he did because of religious fervor. By all accounts, the man went insane and people died because of it. We need to divert resources to mental health programs in the military, not to anti-Muslim witchhunts.

Ah. Mikhail Gorbachev. If ever there was an expert on losing a war in Afghanistan. We worked behind the scenes to give him (and Brezhnev. and Andropov. and…that premier who died about a week into office) a black eye. To give him the Soviets’ Vietnam. And it worked. Only to come back and bite us in the ass. There’s no way to win this conflict. Gorbachev knew. The Soviet Union was a dying ember by the time they withdrew from Afghanistan and the war was only one reason why it imploded.

I’m sure i’m not alone in hoping that the January elections in Iraq go smoothly. Not just for their sake (they could use the stability), but a smooth election would allow us to speed up our withdrawal.

Damn Netanyahu. He shouldn’t even be in power; Kadima was the largest party and they should be able to drag Labour away to form a new coalition. Granted, neither Kadima nor Labour has a great track record with peace (though Sharon withdrew from Gaza and nearly every peace treaty Israel has signed has been under a Labour administration)…but Livni and Barak have both come out in favour of a permanent settlement freeze. Assuming Palestinians can convince Abbas to remain on (or, failing that, elect someone like Mustafa Barghouti), there’s a real opportunity to have productive talks. And possibly an agreement. Something that can never happen under Netanyahu.

  15. Mr.Bungle says:

    aquarius2,

Don’t you see the game that Lieberman is playing? I’ll bet he’s had his chairmanship threatened by the Democratic leadership already due to his filibuster threat on health care. So if he pledges to run an investigation on TERRORISM, then good luck trying to yank his seat from him. The Republicans will crow that the only the reason they are taking the seat is because the Dems are trying to stop Lieberman’s investigation.

For which we have to thank Obama in part for deluded “bipartisan” fetish, Harry Reid for his shallowness and spinelessness, and the Blue Dogs for steadfast, handsomely remunerated representation of industry interests at the public’s expense.

But take heart, 2010 should see the ejection of some Blue-Dogs in favor of progressives (people like Alan Grayson).

  18. Marie says:

I don’t have a lot of confidence in the ability of Sen. Reid to get the health care bill passed. He was touted as a “fighter” when he was made Majority leader, but I have yet to see evidence of such.
ML is a position determined by criteria that has more to do with politics than with ability.

  19. Briseadh na Faire says:

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is urging banks to loosen up credit

But, if they loosened up credit, they wouldn’t have that $29,700,000,000 to line their own pockets with! It’s all a matter of priorities, you know.

  20. P.D. says:

I’m beggining to think LIEberman is finished. He has drew a bead on everyone. He had the Balls to spurn the Democrats by running as a Independant. (I still can’t believe he pulled that off) Then he campaigned for McCain, THEN he dicked over his own constituents by rejecting Health Care. I think maybe good ole Joe is probably the most unliked politician in the U.S. right now. A title he truly deserves.

For a government that gets it “right” read “1984.” It is being used as a blueprint for our government even now. The PATRIOT ACT moved us a great deal in that direction, and it’s why Republicans oppose net neutrality. Under Bush, the infrastructure was put in place to monitor the entire internet. _____________________________________________________________

Not even close. Seung-hui Cho killed more people at Virginia Tech. Of course, he wasn’t Muslim, so automatically that wasn’t a terrorist attack.

Lieberman has apparently already decided that the Fort Hood shootings were the result of a Muslim extremist waging “jihad” — even though most of the evidence we have seen so far points to a man who had reached his breaking point, brought on by a number of factors.

How does Lieberman define “terrorist act”? It appears to me that he defines it as “any act of violence committed by a Muslim, regardless of the reason.” This makes him no better than Michael Savage or one of that crowd.

Oh, I see the problem. You don’t know what the word “fact” means.

  85. Dave N says:

Here, I’ll make this easy for you SPERM, since you lack the intellectual capacity to do so:

    ter·ror·ism
    n. The unlawful use or threatened use of force or violence by a person or an organized group against people or property with the intention of intimidating or coercing societies or governments, often for ideological or political reasons.

Doesn’t necessarily have to be part of a group.

Wrong. It’s not a “fact”. It’s a rumor. Try again, cupcake. In fact, one eye witness reported to not hearing him say a word.

Well, terror is has become such a broad word. A drug dealer crossing the border with meth could be considered one and it doesnt have to do with that persons politics. Waging a war on a word is problematic in that regard I think

I don’t sit around complaining that Hillary would have done a better job than Obama is doing because there’s no way to prove it.
Pelosi took a lot of heat from the Dems, mostly related to the intelligence briefings but she’s been exonerated of that and with policy focus having shifted to health care , she has stepped-up admiraably.
The new blood, Grayson, has shone, as has Weiner of NY. The Democratic women are showing more fight and spine than many of the men.
The party CAN improve in 2010. It’s the only choice, the only reasonable game in town.
I complain directly to Obama and other Dem reps to try and set them straight, as others do, and encourage those who do act in their constituents interests rather than the interests of their largest campaign donors.
I’m not giving up on the Dems just because Hillary isn;t president, because Obama’s policies don;t jive perfectly with my wishes. because so many Dems are spineless and useless.

Inbred societal shit-stains have yet to comprehend kharma, much less the ramifications and acceptance of guilt when poking a beehive with a pointy stick.

  117. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

I think Americans are failing capitalism. Like a bright child, capitalism needs an external structure that directs its energies and abilities toward actions that enhance, not harm, society in general.

Sgt. Munley is a retired Army soldier, so she would not be qualified for an MoH because she is considered a civilian. This is your initial post:

As a lifelong Democrat who is fast becoming disillusioned with this administrations subservience of, if not complete support of, the oligarchy, the monied interests, raping the working man, I have to ask where is the change I voted for?

Diana DeGette (D-CO) said she has collected “more than 40 signatures from House Democrats vowing to oppose any final bill that includes the amendment — enough to block passage.”

Crap! Don’t block it over that. Pass the damn thing, then go back and add abortion services. It’ll be a hell of a lot easier to modify it than it is to get it passed to begin with.

  153. dbadass says:

    HF:
How ya coming with that data? Do you need help with the math? Start by taking all military capital offenses and dividing that into the number committed by members of each faith and if decimals throw you just multiple by 100. Does that help?

President Obama is reportedly nearing a decision to send up to 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. “This is not going to be an easy sell [to the American public],” one administration official told McClatchy.

So don’t try to sell it! If you know the people don’t want it, don’t do. Let’s try that for a “change.”

  159. dbadass says:

So why don’t you wish to examine the whole dataset? That is just weak. You can’t expect me to buy you nonsensical agenda unless you can support it with data. Can you support your nonsensical ramblings with data or not? Should we just discount them as the words of a goofball attention seeker?

  160. jwmuiyaai says:

The three biggest banks to exit the government’s TARP program — Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s investment bank — “are set to pay record bonuses this year,” totaling $29.7 billion. “It doesn’t seem as if even political threat, disastrous PR, envy, rising unemployment rates and home repossessions is enough to get any of these people to refuse the bonuses they have ‘earned,’” said Paul Hodgson of Corporate Library.

Why would anyone want to deny these executives their bonuses? They have every right to the money they were promised in their contracts. And the government has every right to significantly increase taxes on those who earn these obscene salaries to help fund healthcare, education etc. The government also has the right to break up financial companies so that none are too big to fail and we never have to bail them out again. Then lets see if they still pay bonuses to those who run the companies into the ground.

  161. jwmuiyaai says:

Over the weekend, the Iraqi parliament approved a crucial election law “by a wide margin after weeks of deadlock, which had raised fears that the parliamentary election might have to be delayed.” Obama said that the agreement advanced the “political progress” to “allow for the orderly and responsible transition of American combat troops out of Iraq by next September.”

This is good news, but Obama needs to get our troops out by September no matter what the Iraqi government does. Hopefully this is one promise that he intends to keep no matter what.

I know someone who is married to an executive at Morgan Stanley who just built a new house near here. I saw pictures of the house and let’s just say that the guest house was what most people would consider a mansion. This house is huge enough, grand enough and so over-the-top that it would be considered suitable for royalty.

As jwmuiyaai said, they have every right to the money promised in their contracts but to me it seems that the ridiculous money they get has literally contributed to a new kind of American class and that almost everyone else is supposed to just be grateful for the crumbs they throw our way in the form of house staff etc.

These people have so much money they hardly even know what to do with it but hey – when they build huge mansions at least local contractors get some work, right? I worry about the future of the middle class in this country!
