The historic health care legislation passed by the House over the weekend included an amendment that sharply restricts “the availability of coverage for abortions.” Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) said she has collected “more than 40 signatures from House Democrats vowing to oppose any final bill that includes the amendment — enough to block passage.”
As chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs committee, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) will lead an investigation into the Fort Hood shootings to look for “signs of ‘Islamic extremism.’” Lieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”
Former Soviet Union president Mikhail Gorbachev said that President Obama should begin a withdrawal from Afghanistan. “I think that what’s needed is not additional forces,” he said, “this is something that we discussed, too, years ago but we decided not to do it. And I think our experience deserves attention.”
President Obama is reportedly nearing a decision to send up to 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. “This is not going to be an easy sell [to the American public],” one administration official told McClatchy.
The three biggest banks to exit the government’s TARP program — Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s investment bank — “are set to pay record bonuses this year,” totaling $29.7 billion. “It doesn’t seem as if even political threat, disastrous PR, envy, rising unemployment rates and home repossessions is enough to get any of these people to refuse the bonuses they have ‘earned,’” said Paul Hodgson of Corporate Library.
Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner is urging banks to loosen up credit at a time “of mounting unemployment, rising company bankruptcies and increasing regulatory oversight.” Tight credit is a “serious problem,” Jan Hatzius, chief U.S. economist at Goldman Sachs says. “This could keep growth significantly weaker.”
“Growing concerned that the Congressional timetable for passing a health care overhaul could slip into next year,” the White House “is stepping up pressure on the Senate for quick action, with President Obama appearing Sunday in the Rose Garden to call on senators to ‘”take up the baton and bring this effort to the finish line.’” For now, the Senate’s bill is “stalled while budget analysts assess its overall costs.”
Over the weekend, the Iraqi parliament approved a crucial election law “by a wide margin after weeks of deadlock, which had raised fears that the parliamentary election might have to be delayed.” Obama said that the agreement advanced the “political progress” to “allow for the orderly and responsible transition of American combat troops out of Iraq by next September.”
President Obama will hold talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu today as the Israeli-Palestinian peace effort continues to flounder. One major issue expected to arise is that of Israeli settlements in Palestinian territories, which the administration has softened its line on in recent weeks.
And finally: It turns out that the Twitter feed of Levi Johnston is a fake. After actor William Shatner performed a dramatic reading of some of his tweets on Conan O’Brien’s show, the Tonight Show host has apologized for the error, saying, “I’d like to apologize personally to Levi Johnston and his lawyer and publicist for misrepresenting him in any way. Levi is clearly a great American. We wish him the best of luck as he trains for his upcoming naked photo shoot.”

November 9th, 2009 at 9:09 amArrest them all. This is such garbage.
Am I the only one who thinks our government is so broken, we can never get it right? All around there is fraud, waste and abuse. Every time we try to correct it, our leaders balk. Whether it’s Health Care to finacial reform. Ever since Obama got in, These SOBs (Republicans AND Democrats) have dug in and maintained the status quo. It is extemely depressing.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:13 amGee Joe how about waiting for a investigation to be completed before you shoot your mouth off about terrorist acts.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:14 amThe Fort Hood massacre was more the result of PTSD (even without haven’t been in combat, but from both hazing and listening to returning soldiers horror stories) than it was a “deliberate act of terrorism”.
But reactionary Right-wing paranoids like Lieberman see every “Moos-lim” as a “terrorist” first and a person second.
The REAL investigation needs to be in how the stress of two wars without end may be affecting the mental health of our troops.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:14 amLieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”
Grrrrrrrrr. Tell me again why we should have this guy in our caucus? Tell me again why he’s the chairman of this committee? It’s like we decided to pretend he was an optometrist and we were his patient and then we gave him an assortment of sharp sticks to jab in our eyes.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:14 amWhy is Lieberman doing this.? It wasn’t a terrorist attack, it was a mad man attack. There must be something in that fox news water than turns people to dishonest, intolerant pigs… or maybe it’s just Lieberman.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:14 am“Lieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be ‘the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.’”
I wouldn’t put it past Lie-berman to recommend internment camps for Arab-Americans, because of how well it has worked for Israel, in the West Bank and Gaza.

Personally, I think that it’s a terrorist act to delay health care coverage for millions of American’s just so that you can line your pockets with a little more blood money… but that’s just me
November 9th, 2009 at 9:16 amLieberman’s uncalled for comments about terrorism should be reason to force out of his head of committee. I could understand an investigation into why this man was not released from the military but Terrorism????
November 9th, 2009 at 9:19 amLook for the Lieberman opinion to be the meme of Fox and other repugniscum – this is a “terrorist act” committed on the Obama administration watch.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:20 amThey are linking the mosque where the funeral of Hasan’s mother in May of 2001 to the 9/11 highjackers, so therefore, this was terrorism.
Convoluted reasoning is the hallmark of conservatives.
Why is it that Pro-Lifers oppose funding for abortions, but support funding for the death penalty; support funding for war? Why? Because it’s not about being “Pro-Life”. It’s about manipulating people for political gain.

Yikes! I am going to have a little more caffeine and rethink and repost my comment at #10.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:22 am(yawn)
‘Morning.
It’s a tossup as to whether the Stupak Amendment makes it into the final bill. Despite Boehner demanding to Rangel that the Senate version include it (which prompted Rangel to cry “Shame!” on Boehner’s sense of ethics….), there are only Dems in the senate that identify as “pro-life”. With Lieberman vowing a filabuster, passing the bill through civil, traditional means is a moot point. Because of Sen. Droopy Dog’s insistence on lowering the standard of living for an entire nation, reconciliation is the only means. And even though the majority leader is one of the “pro-lifers”, it’s unlikely the amendment would carry over. Expect the bill to reinforce the Hyde Amendment, but not go further.
Sen. Droopy Dog’s bias is showing. Ft. Hood shooter is a Muslim. Therefore, he must have been acting on orders from al-Qaeda/was a sleeper agent/committed religiously motivated terrorism. John Russell killed 5 at Camp Liberty. Where was the instant judgment that Russell committed an act of Christian Terrorism? It’s absent because that motive was absent, like it was at Ft. Hood. There is scant evidence at best to show that Hasan did what he did because of religious fervor. By all accounts, the man went insane and people died because of it. We need to divert resources to mental health programs in the military, not to anti-Muslim witchhunts.
Ah. Mikhail Gorbachev. If ever there was an expert on losing a war in Afghanistan. We worked behind the scenes to give him (and Brezhnev. and Andropov. and…that premier who died about a week into office) a black eye. To give him the Soviets’ Vietnam. And it worked. Only to come back and bite us in the ass. There’s no way to win this conflict. Gorbachev knew. The Soviet Union was a dying ember by the time they withdrew from Afghanistan and the war was only one reason why it imploded.
I’m sure i’m not alone in hoping that the January elections in Iraq go smoothly. Not just for their sake (they could use the stability), but a smooth election would allow us to speed up our withdrawal.
Damn Netanyahu. He shouldn’t even be in power; Kadima was the largest party and they should be able to drag Labour away to form a new coalition. Granted, neither Kadima nor Labour has a great track record with peace (though Sharon withdrew from Gaza and nearly every peace treaty Israel has signed has been under a Labour administration)…but Livni and Barak have both come out in favour of a permanent settlement freeze. Assuming Palestinians can convince Abbas to remain on (or, failing that, elect someone like Mustafa Barghouti), there’s a real opportunity to have productive talks. And possibly an agreement. Something that can never happen under Netanyahu.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:22 amaquarius2,
Don’t you see the game that Lieberman is playing? I’ll bet he’s had his chairmanship threatened by the Democratic leadership already due to his filibuster threat on health care. So if he pledges to run an investigation on TERRORISM, then good luck trying to yank his seat from him. The Republicans will crow that the only the reason they are taking the seat is because the Dems are trying to stop Lieberman’s investigation.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:23 amThanks for all the fish…
November 9th, 2009 at 9:23 amP.D. says: “Ever since Obama got in, These SOBs (Republicans AND Democrats) have dug in and maintained the status quo. It is extremely depressing.”
For which we have to thank Obama in part for deluded “bipartisan” fetish, Harry Reid for his shallowness and spinelessness, and the Blue Dogs for steadfast, handsomely remunerated representation of industry interests at the public’s expense.
But take heart, 2010 should see the ejection of some Blue-Dogs in favor of progressives (people like Alan Grayson).
November 9th, 2009 at 9:23 amI don’t have a lot of confidence in the ability of Sen. Reid to get the health care bill passed. He was touted as a “fighter” when he was made Majority leader, but I have yet to see evidence of such.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:24 amML is a position determined by criteria that has more to do with politics than with ability.
But, if they loosened up credit, they wouldn’t have that $29,700,000,000 to line their own pockets with! It’s all a matter of priorities, you know.
November 9th, 2009 at 9:25 amI’m beggining to think LIEberman is finished. He has drew a bead on everyone. He had the Balls to spurn the Democrats by running as a Independant. (I still can’t believe he pulled that off) Then he campaigned for McCain, THEN he dicked over his own constituents by rejecting Health Care. I think maybe good ole Joe is probably the most unliked politician in the U.S. right now. A title he truly deserves.

That’s because they kept their jobs and their money and then got handed OUR money to gamble with as they please. They’re still richer and technically even richer. They have ALL THE MONEY!

For a government that gets it “right” read “1984.” It is being used as a blueprint for our government even now. The PATRIOT ACT moved us a great deal in that direction, and it’s why Republicans oppose net neutrality. Under Bush, the infrastructure was put in place to monitor the entire internet. When the purges come, those of us who post on progressive sites will be the first to be rounded up. But before the purges, there will be the Civil War, led by Right-Wing and Neo-Christian extremists.

_____________________________________________________________
Not even close. Seung-hui Cho killed more people at Virginia Tech. Of course, he wasn’t Muslim, so automatically that wasn’t a terrorist attack.
Lieberman has apparently already decided that the Fort Hood shootings were the result of a Muslim extremist waging “jihad” — even though most of the evidence we have seen so far points to a man who had reached his breaking point, brought on by a number of factors.
How does Lieberman define “terrorist act”? It appears to me that he defines it as “any act of violence committed by a Muslim, regardless of the reason.” This makes him no better than Michael Savage or one of that crowd.

Joe, how are you going to hold hearings if you’re filibustering Health Care reform? I want the Senate to stay in session, without a break, until reform is passed. If you want to filibuster, do it for real. Four thousand Americans are dying each month, while you dither.

Well, FoxNews is reporting that authorities say preliminary evidence suggests this wasn’t an intended act of terrorism. And if FoxNews is leaving the slightest bit of doubt that a Muslim DIDN’T commit an act of terrorism, it seems credible.
In all seriousness, it sounds like Hasan has been disturbed for a number of years. He was a single father, quiet, and became withdrawn and increasingly devout in his religion after the death of his parents. Add to that years of taunting from his colleagues because of his faith, treating soldiers with cases of severe PTSD, and news of imminent deployment…
The warning signs were there. Hasan was a powderkeg.

I’m going to guess the majority of people posting here are registered Democrats, but none too thrilled with the party. It’s a matter of pramatism, though. We live in a country with a 2 party system; the goal is to support the lesser of two evils and support the progressive elements in the party.

Democrats have never walked in lockstep – it’s part of being liberal to think for yourself, to try to see the other side, to believe that your own thinking might be mistaken, and we also express disappointment in our own.
Repugs tolerate none of that – they group think in their monolithic party and totally do not understand critical thinking.

November 9th, 2009 at 10:17 amLieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”
After which Joe Lieberman (I-Israel) said…
“To prevent these acts of terrorism on our soil, we mush provide Israel with another 4 Billion dollars of our tax money so the Palestinians don’t do this again.”
November 9th, 2009 at 10:17 amLinks? Names? I didn’ think so.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:19 amThe fact is that Major Nidal Malik Hasan jumped on a table,
yelled “Alah Hu Akhbar”and began the shooting rampage that killed 13 people and wounded 30 more. What is it with people, from many religious groups, saying there is one God, but the other groups God isnt God?
Isnt that kinda paganist in the sense there are then, by that logic, many Gods?
November 9th, 2009 at 10:20 amEnnuiDivine says: “I’m going to guess the majority of people posting here are registered Democrats, but none too thrilled with the party. It’s a matter of pragmatism, though.”
Hillary was my Primary choice. but Obama won candidacy, and won it well.
I don’t sit around complaining that Hillary would have done a better job than Obama is doing because there’s no way to prove it.
Pelosi took a lot of heat from the Dems, mostly related to the intelligence briefings but she’s been exonerated of that and with policy focus having shifted to health care , she has stepped-up admiraably.
The new blood, Grayson, has shone, as has Weiner of NY. The Democratic women are showing more fight and spine than many of the men.
The party CAN improve in 2010. It’s the only choice, the only reasonable game in town.
I complain directly to Obama and other Dem reps to try and set them straight, as others do, and encourage those who do act in their constituents interests rather than the interests of their largest campaign donors.
I’m not giving up on the Dems just because Hillary isn;t president, because Obama’s policies don;t jive perfectly with my wishes. because so many Dems are spineless and useless.
We’ve had 8-12 years of the only alternative.
If, rocks911, you wish things were better, well the Donkey is a lot more like the pony you are apparently wishing for, than the alternative Elephant.

November 9th, 2009 at 10:25 amWhen people go doing violent things they often say they are doing Gods work from McVeigh to 911 criminals.
Its sockpuppet madness.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:28 amFunny how the tea-baggin’ gaggers look right past the bigoted, racist treatment the crazy murdering Army man received from his peers prior to his col-blooded rampage (his “Allah is Love” bumper sticker earned him a key scratch so great his car had to be replaced and the not so friendly baby diaper thrown in his car with a note that read “your headress”.)
Inbred societal shit-stains have yet to comprehend kharma, much less the ramifications and acceptance of guilt when poking a beehive with a pointy stick.
Responsibility, blame? Repukes have no soul, therefore, no moral consciousness.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:28 amCan someone explain to me how a berserk Major on a killing spree has anything at all to do with the President? Did Obama recruit this man? Did he promote him to major?
Of all the stupid sh!t made up by the Right, this one makes my Top 10. At least for this year.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:29 amThe shooter was in cahoots with al-Qaeda and was contacting them? His computer says otherwise.
Also, most of the articles I have read don’t confirm he said anything before firing, only that people are reportedly alleging he did. Alledged eyewitness reports and actually having proof that he said “Allah ackbar” are two different things.
You can say Santa Claus exists, but that doesn’t mean you have proof.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:32 amAmerica-land of the dumber-than-shit, holier-than-thou group who NEVER TAKES RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUR ACTIONS:
1. Plight of black minority? (=slavery)
2. The rise of anti-US sentiment and Islamic extremism? (=meddling with Arab/Israel affairs)
3. Economic turmoil? (=mindless, evil greed)
Do we ever pay it forward? All I see is continued misery on the horizon (=capitalism is failing)

November 9th, 2009 at 10:38 amDNFP says: (=capitalism is failing)
I think Americans are failing capitalism. Like a bright child, capitalism needs an external structure that directs its energies and abilities toward actions that enhance, not harm, society in general.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:43 amLieberman said on Fox News Sunday that the shootings may be “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11.”

No surprise. Just disgust.

November 9th, 2009 at 10:47 amCapitalism, in its most basic form is replacing currency with credit and debt.
The real problem is that so much credit/debt is balanced on smaller and smaller pieces of capital. IE usury.
November 9th, 2009 at 10:49 amWhat motivates a person to defend a person that murders in cold blood American Soldiers?
Projectionism with a question mark… nobody here, that I have seen, is defending the criminality of the acts of these folks be they homegrown or from foreign lands.

I dunno, what did motivate you to object when the Department of Homeland Security specifically warned us that terrorists would try to recruit our soldiers?
You remember that, don’t you? You guys were screaming that our troops (like Major Hasan) were true patriots and beyond any suspicion. How did that work out for you?

November 9th, 2009 at 11:05 amThe woman that wounded that loser had better get a medal of honor.
She was a civilian police office FMU and I am quite sure she will be commended for her heroic acts in stopping a criminal act.

November 9th, 2009 at 11:07 amI agree that the civilian policewoman and her civilian partner should, and probably will be, honored. But don’t you have to be military to get a medal of honor?
November 9th, 2009 at 11:08 amI would like to warn our detractors about running with the fear card because some politicians will use that to create legislation, for re-election purposes, that could result in further legislation to remove your rights for fleeting safety
November 9th, 2009 at 11:12 amAnd the politicians are already gearing up to do that not to keep you safe but to keep them safely in office.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:15 amI agree that the civilian policewoman and her civilian partner should, and probably will be, honored. But don’t you have to be military to get a medal of honor?
Sgt. Munley is a retired Army soldier, so she would not be qualified for an MoH because she is considered a civilian. She may get a Police Purple Heart (depending on if her district awards ir, a Presidential Medal of Freedom, or the Medal of Valor, which is the highest commendation a public officer can recieve from the President.

I will leave it for others who keep track of such things as to whether you’re a concern troll. Things like this happen for a reason. This one happened because you on the right declared war on Muslims.
HF, you are responsible for this tragedy. You’re bigotry and hate, which you exhibit daily here in generous doses are the cause of this man lashing out.

November 9th, 2009 at 11:19 amI am curious about the “raping of the working man” piece…
November 9th, 2009 at 11:19 amSo HF are we going to calculate military capital offenses by faith or not? Are you scared of the result or do you just have an agenda?

November 9th, 2009 at 11:24 amThe historic health care legislation passed by the House over the weekend included an amendment that sharply restricts “the availability of coverage for abortions.” Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) said she has collected “more than 40 signatures from House Democrats vowing to oppose any final bill that includes the amendment — enough to block passage.”
Crap! Don’t block it over that. Pass the damn thing, then go back and add abortion services. It’ll be a hell of a lot easier to modify it than it is to get it passed to begin with.

November 9th, 2009 at 11:27 amHow ya coming with that data? Do you need help with the math? Start by taking all military capital offenses and dividing that into the number committed by members of each faith and if decimals throw you just multiple by 100. Does that help?

November 9th, 2009 at 11:32 amHow would you know? My hunch is that you can’t tell a hemipteran from a hymenopteran without looking it up…
President Obama is reportedly nearing a decision to send up to 34,000 additional troops to Afghanistan. “This is not going to be an easy sell [to the American public],” one administration official told McClatchy.
So don’t try to sell it! If you know the people don’t want it, don’t do. Let’s try that for a “change.”
November 9th, 2009 at 11:40 amSo why don’t you wish to examine the whole dataset? That is just weak. You can’t expect me to buy you nonsensical agenda unless you can support it with data. Can you support your nonsensical ramblings with data or not? Should we just discount them as the words of a goofball attention seeker?
November 9th, 2009 at 11:40 amThe three biggest banks to exit the government’s TARP program — Goldman Sachs Group Inc., Morgan Stanley and JPMorgan Chase & Co.’s investment bank — “are set to pay record bonuses this year,” totaling $29.7 billion. “It doesn’t seem as if even political threat, disastrous PR, envy, rising unemployment rates and home repossessions is enough to get any of these people to refuse the bonuses they have ‘earned,’” said Paul Hodgson of Corporate Library.
Why would anyone want to deny these executives their bonuses? They have every right to the money they were promised in their contracts. And the government has every right to significantly increase taxes on those who earn these obscene salaries to help fund healthcare, education etc. The government also has the right to break up financial companies so that none are too big to fail and we never have to bail them out again. Then lets see if they still pay bonuses to those who run the companies into the ground.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:50 amOver the weekend, the Iraqi parliament approved a crucial election law “by a wide margin after weeks of deadlock, which had raised fears that the parliamentary election might have to be delayed.” Obama said that the agreement advanced the “political progress” to “allow for the orderly and responsible transition of American combat troops out of Iraq by next September.”
This is good news, but Obama needs to get our troops out by September no matter what the Iraqi government does. Hopefully this is one promise that he intends to keep no matter what.
November 9th, 2009 at 11:53 amI know someone who is married to an executive at Morgan Stanley who just built a new house near here. I saw pictures of the house and let’s just say that the guest house was what most people would consider a mansion. This house is huge enough, grand enough and so over-the-top that it would be considered suitable for royalty.
As jwmuiyaai said, they have every right to the money promised in their contracts but to me it seems that the ridiculous money they get has literally contributed to a new kind of American class and that almost everyone else is supposed to just be grateful for the crumbs they throw our way in the form of house staff etc.
These people have so much money they hardly even know what to do with it but hey – when they build huge mansions at least local contractors get some work, right? I worry about the future of the middle class in this country!

November 9th, 2009 at 12:25 pmFrom EnnuiDivine’s link:
Among the wounded in the shooting was Pvt. Joseph Foster, 21, who was hit in the hip as he prepared paperwork for his January deployment to Afghanistan.
He said he “was sitting in about the second row back when the assailant stood up and yelled ‘Allahu akbar’ in Arabic and he opened fire,” Foster said Monday on CNN’s “American Morning.”
Foster, 21, said he wasn’t clear about whether the gunman said those exact words, noting that “with that much adrenaline, you tend to forget things.”
