Westboro Baptist Church Organizes Homophobic Anti-Obama Protest Outside Sasha And Malia’s School

Fred Phelps’ Westboro Baptist Church is a hate group that goes around the country staging anti-gay rallies at some of the most inappropriate places (e.g. the funerals of former White House press secretary Tony Snow, victims of the Minneapolis bridge collapse, and U.S. troops) with messages like “Thank God For AIDS” and “God Hates Fags.”

This week, they’re bringing their hateful message to children in Washington, DC, planning pickets at a handful of local schools. This morning, they showed up outside of Sidwell Friends, the school that Sasha and Malia Obama attend. On Twitter, Megan Phelps-Roper — one of Fred Phelps’ grandchildren — posted a picture of the protest:

Westboro protest outside of Sidwell Friends School

Washington Post education reporter Michael Birnbaum said that he spent the morning at the protest, and MSNBC host David Shuster wrote, “Hopefully, some of the more rational conservatives/republicans will condemn this stuff today. It was beyond the pale.” ThinkProgress contacted Sidwell for more details on the protest and are awaiting a response.

In the past, extreme anti-choice activist Randall Terry has also targeted the Obama children’s school, saying, “We will continue to show images of aborted babies at high schools, no matter what the cost.”

Update Ellis Turner, the associate head of Sidwell, told ThinkProgress that students and faculty members wearing rainbow colors staged a counter-protest. They held a banner with the Quaker phrase, "There is that of God in everyone" (seen in the background of the picture above). Turner said that none of the protesters attempted to come into the school. Joann Weiner at Politics Daily has more details.

They have gone to far. This is a direct threat. They should all be arrested.

  2. WillowOrchid says:

Humans create God in Our Own Image, don’t we?

These person’s God is as ugly and evil as they are. I don’t think they’ll enjoy the afterlife any more than they enjoy this life.

I feel a little sorry for the kids, being abused in this manner. Too bad kids can’t divorce their parents.

  3. Shayne says:

    What would Jesus say?

  4. missmolly says:

Ah — the Fred Phelps loonies, from whom we haven’t heard in awhile, have apparently moved from picketing the funerals of our soldiers and are now targeting children with their hateful rhetoric.

    Always classy…

  5. USNclerk says:

Arrested, children placed into foster homes, and the church disbanded. As a start to ending this hare-brained lunacy.

  6. WillowOrchid says:

I’m referring to the protesting kids, not the school kids, tho the comment is true so far as they’re being abused, too. Not their parent’s fault.

  7. Parlezvous says:

In the picture attached to this article, why is that pathetic girl, with her pathetic sign, hiding behind those sunglasses? I believe that is cowardice and nothing else since the weather doesn’t appear to be particularly sunny.

  8. Fritz says:

“Hopefully, some of the more rational conservatives/republicans will condemn this stuff today…”

    Rational conservatives/republicans? No such thing.

  9. Squeaky Wheels says:

Like I always say, the Phelps clan are more fun than a barrel full of Bible-thumping monkeys.

  10. Exit Stage Left says:

To the right wing extremists, even children are nothing more than props.

  11. P.D. says:

These people are downright evil. They picket service men, victims of hate crimes, now they are protesting in front of the President’s childrens school? President Obama has had more death threats than any other President. I would view this as a threat. The Wingers are becoming more unhinged. Dr. Tilman, that Security guard at the Museum… This has to end.

  12. Baby Maddie says:

Westboro Baptist Church – god’s tea baggers.

  13. DRxJ says:

Upon researching these mucking forons, one will realize that Phelps & Co. are money hunting lawyers who strive (and I mean STRIVE) on these heated protests, in hopes that someone, anyone, will lose their cool and assault them.
With hundreds of cameras around as proof.
Staging a certain lawsuit, probably in the millions.

Don’t be fooled. They are not about the preachings of Christ.
They are all about the MONEY!

    Simply ignore (or laugh).

Eventually, with no court dates and no law suits, they will disappear.

Until the next ‘hot bed’ event.

  14. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

If I may quote one of Jesus’ sayings from the cross as recorded in Scripture, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing”. Fred Phelps thinks he is doing God’s work, but he is as mistaken as the Pharisees were about what he is doing.

  15. missmolly says:

Um…”God is your enemy”??? What, exactly, is that supposed to mean?

If the goal of Westboro Baptist is to convince evil-doers they should repent their sins and change their ways, telling them that God is their enemy probably isn’t the best way to do that.

But I suspect their message is more along the lines of “We hate you, and therefore God hates you.” They don’t want to evangelize — they just want to hate.

  16. plasticgoat says:

Hate on haters. The collective intelligence of the members of this so called church, must be in the single digits.

  19. MapleStreet says:

Targeting school kids is cowardly, picking on the defenseless.

Targeting the Obama’s school is directed cruelty.

  20. EnnuiDivine says:

Where are the Patriot Guard Riders when you need them?

Westboro is considered, even by other Evangelicals, as a radical hate group. Hell, even O’Reilly and Hannity went off on Shirley Phelps-Roper. I mean, I fully expect them to remain silent, but they’re not gonna support Westboro.

These people are the scum of the Earth, every bit as reprehensible as Harkat ul-Mujahideen or Kach. Just because you don’t physically engage in violence…doesn’t mean you can foment it at will.

These people make a mockery of the free speech laws that make this country so great.

  21. J.C. says:

    I am your friend.

  22. P.D. says:

Just think of the upbringing of these people. Teaching this kind of ‘Religion’ is nothing more than child abuse. The fact that these people have been able to get away with this behavior is shocking. Where is Children Services? Why haven’t the authorities stepped in? If I did this to my children, Children Services would be all over my ass.

  23. tom says:

Frankly, I am surprised that these idiots aren’t hanging around Fort Hood right about now.

  24. SoapBox says:

    These people are SICK.

    And…this is no “church”.

    It’s a domestic terrorist organization.

  25. evangenital says:

If progressives pulled this sort of thing outside Michelle Bachmann’s house, they would be immediately arrested.

There is always a different set of rules for the repiggies.

  27. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

I wonder how these people would respond to a pro-gay rights, anti-hate rally outside of their church on Sunday mornings. The fact that this hasn’t happened is probably due to two reasons: the rest of us aren’t as mean-spirited as they are and we can anticipate a violent response as a reaction.

  28. sscncturn64 says:

I cant figure out why these idiots care about what other people do. Its none of their freakin business. How does it effect them personally? It doesnt, I wish they would just STFU and beat it.

  29. T.H.E.Cat says:

Ya really gotta wonder about a deranged whackjob (Fred Phelps) who is soooooooooo flamingly homophobic he recruits all his inbred family to his “cause” and calls the whole sick mess a “church”.

Methinks Klan Phelps do protest, way, _way_ WAAAAAAAAAYYY too much.

  30. Xisithrus says:

Well, I expect to see them in front of the new church that Ted Haggard is starting, right?

  31. evangenital says:

Phelps has a gay son with whom he has no contact, and who lives far away from the family.

Randall Terry has a lesbian daughter with whom he has no contact, and who lives far away from the family.

    So much for “Christian” love…

  32. The Dogfather says:

PLC@27: I think you’re onto something. If Bachmann (R-Batshitosota) can get about 4000 of her lemmings to waste government time protesting health care, we should be able to get quite a few of our folks (i.e., sane, rational people) to protest outside these nutjobs’ church, shouldn’t we? I’m in…

  33. P.D. says:

USN@5, Far be it of me to tell people how to raise their children. But I agree with you. Arrest them, and put the children in foster homes. It’s the only chance they have of a normal life. This is child abuse, plain and simple. If this were anyone else besides Fred Phelp’s family, the authorities would have stepped in by now. It’s disgusting really.

  34. WillowOrchid says:

“…why is that pathetic girl … hiding behind those sunglasses?”

Well, cowardice is one of the foundations for all wingnut behavior. But I’d say she wants to conceal that her eyes are whirling like the villain in “Who Killed Roger Rabbit?”

  35. raynman says:

Terrorism – the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce, esp. for political purposes

Hmmm… seems to me that we have a terrorist group here. I wonder how long until Senator Lieberman uses his bully pulpit to go after Phelps?

  36. pastcaring says:

    Two thoughts:

    1. I can’t help but wonder what family gatherings are like in the Phelps home–i.e. Christmas

    2. I think it’s time for an end to tax exempt status for churches of any kind.

  37. WillowOrchid says:

“…I am surprised that these idiots aren’t hanging around Fort Hood …”

They’re cowards. I’m sure they know they’d get the crap beaten out of them faster than they can manufacture it. And any lawsuits they filed…well, wouldn’t go too far.

  38. Fred says:

For people who claim to be for doing the right thing, they sure seem not to know what that means.

Using these childrens lives as political tools is evil.

  39. jbrantow says:

  41. roxsteady says:

You’ll all have to forgive me for this but, I wish a long, slow, and painfull death for every one of these disgusting parasites!

  42. Xisithrus says:

Randall Terry has a lesbian daughter with whom he has no contact, and who lives far away from the family.

You see its not their fault they are gay! Its your fault or my fault or there fault or that devil hiding behind that tree over there!!!

Same with Limbaughs drug addiction. Not his fault he didnt have the intestinal fortitude to not get hooked on drugs. Those pills just rolled up and jumped into his snoring maw.

  43. jbrantow says:

Well at least the congregation of the westborough “church” can teach the children the dangers of inbreeding through example.

  44. COProgressive says:

    PatrioticLiberalChristian says:
“Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing”. Fred Phelps thinks he is doing God’s work

No. I’m sorry. Fred Phelps know exactly what he’s doing. He and his following are sick singleminded fanatics bend on disgusting decent people just for their own enrichment and their own glory (in their minds). Phelps and following are NOT Christians, but Phelpsians.

Reminds me of a quote by Gandi:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” – Mahatma Gandi

  45. P.D. says:

What would Jesus do? I’m sure the Lord would condemn behavior like this. But Jesus is a forgiving man. I wonder why these people feel that God speaks through them? Funny how these people rely on the Old Testament and never the New Testament.

  46. NinerFan says:

If the Phelps people prove anything, it’s that religion is dead. It has become the refuge for marginal minds and those who are scared of their own shadow.

Thinking, reasonable people ought to just give it up while they still have their sanity.

  47. Dr. Hussein Matt says:

    “God is your enemy”

Where in the Bible does it state that?

  48. mary lacewing says:

The evidence of their pathological delusion is that they presume to speak for God.

Why do they think that they know what God is thinking and whom God considers an enemy?

  49. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

COProgressive, I think it is far better to refer to these people as “Christian Pharisees” rather than Phelpsians. First, they should understand the idea that Jesus really confronted the vile, selfish, greedy, fanatics known as Pharisees of his time, calling them hypocrites and vipers. Secondly, “Phelpians” would feed into Phelps’ narcissism.

  51. EnnuiDivine says:

There really doesn’t seem to be much of a difference between Westboro and the Yearning For Zion clan.

You know, the Fundamentalist Mormons who believe polygamy is sacrosanct and that girls as young as 12 should be taken as brides?

It’s just a different type of child abuse, and nearly as heinous.

  52. bureaucrap says:

Here’s my question: Why does anyone even pay these wingnuts any attention? They appear to be just media whores, plain and simple. There are like, maybe, seven of them, all in the same family. They obviously have nothing substantive to say — they just travel around the country trying to devise new schemes to get attention. If we ignore them, they’ll go away. Set phasers to “yawn…”

  53. NinerFan says:

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.” – Mahatma Gandi

How long is this going to be an excuse? How much longer before reasonable, thinking people decide they do not want to be associated in any way with crazy, misanthropic religious fanatics?

  54. Fred says:

These are the people that Homeland security is watching closely. They are the fringe, nearly violent in public but totally violent behind closed doors.

    They are un-American.

They are the religious nuts that promote the hatred and bigotry that pushed an American Muslim over the edge.

They are the adult equivilent of the bullies of Columbine.

    You are a false prophet.

    Practice what you preach:

More Republican Hypocrisy: Bible Belt States Have the Highest Divorce Rates. And they Worry About Gay Marriage?

Christian conservatives are hellbent on keeping gays from marrying, saying such same-sex unions are an affront to the great institution of marriage, threatening the very social, emotional and legal fabric which binds a man and woman in holy matrimony. Ironically however, it’s these very same bible-thumpers who have the highest divorce rates in the country. The Bible Belt is the breeding ground for broken marriage.

Despite this fact, the right wing evangelical fanatics like to point to states like “liberal” Massachusetts, holding it up as some sort of Sodom and Gomorrah. To the contrary, Massachusetts has the lowest divorce rate in the country at 2.4 per 1,000 population.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the states with the highest divorce rates are to be found in the Bible Belt, where they exceed by 50% the national average of 4.2 per thousand people. The 10 Southern states with some of the highest divorce rates were Georgia, Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, North and South Carolina, Florida, Arizona and Texas. By comparison nine states in the Northeast– where allegedly amoral, faithless, Volvo-driving, Birkenstock-wearing, NY Times-reading lefties are found–were among those with the lowest divorce rates: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Rhode Island.

Perhaps these born-again Christians should actually practice what they preach. Family values? Now that’s a joke.

I respectfully disagree. Pharisees were a sect of jews that became the mainstream Jewish religion we know today. Using Pharisee as a discription of Phelps and his following is incorrect. They aren’t following the teachings of Christ either, they are following the teaching of Fred Phelps, hence Phelpsians. They most definately are not Christians.

Tell me. You should know this because you’re such a expert on what God thinks: when God said there were two sources of light in the Heavens, was he lying or was he mistaken? Because, we all know that our planet has one source of productive light – the Sun. The moon reflects that source. The moon is not the source. Was God mistaken, or was he lying?

I also saw him ducking his head and covering his face when he thought the cameras were on him.

Operation Rescue and the Phelps clan are the worst kind of cowards. I wish it had been possible to keep the members of Operation Rescue who were arrested at the dem press conference last week locked up. The world would be a much better place.

I’m sorry you were raised with hate and fear all your life. You were an innocent baby, filled with the wonder of the newness of the world, and your family — the people who are supposed to love you the most — opened your precious mind and filled it with the worst hate imaginable.

Since you proudly posted a picture of yourself holding such a sign, I can only assume that you have bought into the hate — out of agreement that humans (like you) are such vile beings, deserving of your hate, or out of some sense of what it took to survive in the Phelps family.

It appears you are an adult now, and as tragic as your childhood was, you are now responsible for how you live your life. Choose to do the easy thing, and perpetuate this disgusting hate into your own children, or do the extremely difficult thing, and break this horrific cycle.

    Either way, it’s your choice.

  105. Democrat Soldier says:

The Phelps’s and their entire family clan are the complete antithesis of true Christianity.

Not once do they spend time helping the poor or disadvantaged. They are NOT following the example led by Jesus.

These sick and disturbed people spend so much time telling God how he should act, and not one single minute acting like Jesus said they should.

I will pray that the Phelps’s people face their lies before they end up burning in hell. They will regret their behavior, but only after God tells tham that they spend not one iota of time practicing Christian values.

  106. cd says:

I wonder what the Phelps excuse is for Shirly Roper Phelps having a child out of wedlock?

It’s not like she’s kept in the background either instead they let her be the spokes person for the WBC.

Matthew 7:4 “Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?

Democrat Soldier: “The Phelps’s and their entire family clan are the complete antithesis of true Christianity.”

“Democrat” is not an adjective. The adjective you’re looking for is “Democratic.” Using “democrat” as an adjective was first popularly used by Repub red-baiter Joe McCarthy, the most disgusting and reviled American politician of the 50’s. You certainly don’t want to be associated with him, do you?

So, for such a small church/cult, the Phelps’ do seem to have sufficient bank to travel the world to picket ALL the big events. Forget New Orleans; they’ve gone repeatedly to picket the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras in Sydney, Australia.

    Isn’t tax-free status just a kick?

You are a hateful bigot. God is NOT on your side. It is too bad you and yours are too stupid to understand the simple concept. You are an embarassment to decent Christians, and frankly decent human beings. If you find yourself siding with the kind of hateful stupidity your Phelps clan spews you should take stock of your pathetic lives and begin to actually HAVE a life. One not based on hatred and making other people as miserable as possible. Now go and be a kooky moron no more

  122. aquarius2 says:

So, hopefully someone in government will kick the asses of Phelps and his attorney daughter to hell. The man and his followers are a disgrace to humanity and are taking up oxygen from deserving people.

  123. LibertyLover says:

OK, I have to ask… If there is only one family in this church… where are the children and grandchildren coming from?

If they do not reproduce, won’t this just be a self-limiting Church? I can’t imagine too many potential mates buying into having to protest military funerals, etc. unless they are of the same church. In which case, wouldn’t they be a relative? They don’t seem to be attracting too many additional followers.

Everyone loathes the Westboro cult. But they represent no one but themselves. I’m an Atheist myself but I’ve got loads of Christian friends and family who think these loons should be banned from harrassing people at funerals, etc.

But not surprised the granola-munchin’, birketstock-footed crowd would try and portray these mental patients as typical of Conservatives. Ironically, these kooks have a lot more in common with the hate-filled Libs who show up in masks at pro-illegal alien rallies, throwing bottles at cops.

WTF? Birketstock? It’s Birkenstock, LS, and lest ye forget that you probably think of yourself as the rational capitalist truthteller on this thread, instead of an adolescent poopmonger, Birkenstock happens to be a perfectly legitimate footwear company; they’ve been around quite a bit longer than Nike or Teva. According to Wikipedia, Johann Adam Birkenstock was registered as a shoemaker in 1774. Yes, at one time they were the choice of trustafarians worldwide, but there are other people who wear them too. It’s kind of like that deal with Volvos; people were always accusing Volvo drivers of being liberals, when the owners were just people who knew quality when they saw it. Even Ford thought Volvo was good enough to buy the company. Consider stopping with the stereotyping-by-products-purchased; it’s juvenile.

The liberals I know don’t throw bottles at anyone, including the police. Some of them might stand around with a sign at an anti-war or peace demonstration and get crap thrown at them by idiots, but generally, they don’t engage in violent acts.

As for your mask-wearing, bottle throwing friends, that doesn’t sound like liberals at all. That sounds like you’re trying to conflate the ‘anarchist’ crowd with liberals, except for the pro-illegal alien demo part. Please provide a link to a reputable source of information on such a demonstration.

You raise an interesting point. When anyone asks me “Are you a republican or democrat?” I respond with “Democrat.

Therefore, I’m a Democrat who happens to be a veteran. That is why I chose “Democrat Soldier” to describe myself. I could have gone with “Gay Soldier”, but that’s who I am, not what I chose to be. I could have gone with “Gay Christian Soldier”, but same thing applies to “Gay Soldier”, and I don’t want to be associated with the funda-freaks that shove their rel;igious lifestyle in your face, no matter what you think about God.

It’s semantics, but I’m stick with “Democrat Soldier”. Please, don’t confuse me with the right-whiners! I don’t whine, like the right-whiners do all the time! ;-)

Oh, you just don’t know how wrong you are. No surprise there. The Westboro cult has so much more in common with the corporate hoodwinked “tea baggers” who are doing their protests at the whims of big business than with any other group out there. All you have to do is talk to them, and it all becomes clear. They have their extremist agenda and no amount of truth or facts will change their minds!

The Westboro Teabagger Church cult! Not quite as good as Blue Oyster, but just as loud and thousands of more times as obnoxious as the teabaggers who hate free speech!

That’s another thing they have in common! Teabaggers shout down their opponents rather than engage in debate! They’d rather hear their own screams than allow anyone else the opportunity to speak freely! So do the Westboro cult members!

  139. Tarbox97 says:

Phelps and his kind are not to be hated, but pitied. The torment these demented souls must be living with every moment of their lives is like many other mental afflictions.
    BUT…
When they cross the line by breaking laws and endangering the well-being of others, they should be treated in the same way other sufferers of mental illness are when they become dangerous (as opposed to offensive) to those around them. They should be placed in protective custody and treated for their illness.
The REAL shame is on those who use others’ hate to rationalize their own, and on those otherwise intelligent people who supress their own humanity to advance their political and financial status by pandering to the haters who do live among us.
