In ‘Act of Despicable Hubris,’ ACCCE Exploits Veterans Groups To Push Dirty Energy Agenda

accce-whoThe American Coalition for Clean Coal Electricity (ACCCE) — a front group of big utilities and coal companies — is no stranger to fraud. During the summer’s House debate on cap-and-trade legislation, lobbyists working on behalf of the coal group sent forged letters to members of Congress, and lied under oath about it. Now, ACCCE is trying to exploit Veterans Day by misrepresenting veterans groups in an email to supporters:

With Veterans Day around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to reflect on all the military personnel who are involved in ensuring our country is protected.

Energy security is one issue that has become increasingly important to our veterans. In fact, national veterans groups Votevets and Operation Free are urging the government to become more energy independent and less reliant on foreign oil.

We can do this by using the abundant domestic fuels we already have. With more than 250 billion tons of recoverable coal reserves, the United States has more coal than the Middle East has oil.

The letter implies that VoteVets and Operation Free support ACCCE and its dirty energy agenda, but the the two groups are actually vocal backers of clean energy legislation. VoteVets excoriated ACCCE for citing them in the email, writing that VoteVets “will never advocate the continued use of carbon based fuels” and that ACCCE is trying “to hijack America’s Veterans” in “an act of despicable hubris.”

Operation Free — a veterans group which is dedicated to fighting climate change — was also quick to condemn ACCCE. In a blog post, Operation Free wrote that the email “dishonors Veterans day” and is “insulting to all of the Veterans who are fighting to protect America’s national security by supporting clean, American power.”

Will ACCCE acknowledge their continued misrepresentation and apologize for using Veterans Day as a prop to support an agenda that many veterans oppose?

Update In a follow-up email sent today, ACCCE's Vice President, Joe Lucas, admits they failed contact Operation Free before including them in yesterday's email and "that the wording of that original message could have been more precise." Lucas goes on to "apologize for any misunderstanding," but still tries to claim that the two groups share a "common goal."

    No, course not. NEXT!

  3. Jim Wolf359 says:

Wow, nice way to conflate an issue. And lie through their teeth as well. ACCCE appears to be getting desperate.

    Why would they start now?

  7. P.D. says:

God damn. These Big Energy Companies are getting more and more immoal by each passing week. When they got busted for fraud with their forged letters, it didn’t faze them one bit. They are willing to suck in even veterans in their neferious schemes. What a bunch of dirt-bags.

Good thing TP is all over this stuff, eh P.D.? :)

Veterans are so horribly abused by the scoundrels who wave the flags and jump up and down for these stupid wars, the same scoundrels who are denying decent medical care to our veterans.

The repiggie sharpies, none of whom have served, shamelessly use the patriotism
card to cheat and cajole these veterans into supporting issues quite harmful to veterans and to the nation as a whole.

  11. lexslamman says:

Has anyone mentioned the fact that Obama is a big supporter of so-called ‘clean coal’? Just look into his support for the Energy Policy Act of 2005. There are a whole lot of pro-coal people here in Kentucky going ballistic about cap-and-trade, but ignoring the fact that they have a big friend in our president, Mr. Barack Obama.

  12. P.D. says:

Just think of it, First our Vets are going on 3 or 4 tours, THEN they have dirt-bag Senators who claim they support our Vets, THEN have the balls to stop legislation that would benefit them. THEN you have a report that states thousands of Vets die a year because of lack of Health Insurance. THEN you have Big Business exploiting them. WTF? Man, what a pissy day. I’m going to get buzzed.

Interesting personal blog, not to mention an also interesting moniker. but I digress..

I support “Clean-coal” Industry , not the so-called you refer to, but real applied science technology that works. I think that is what the President really supports.

But that’s just what I think.

  22. Jane E. Schneider says:

P.D. @12, you summed it up pretty well there. Veterans have been screwed for a long time by a lot of people. I hope that Jon Soltz from VoteVets.org slaps these coal fu(kheads down immediately.

  23. P.D. says:

Is there any thing more absurd then the moniker of ‘Clean Coal’? Whenever I see or hear that phrase, I want to puke. Nothing says cleaner than a piece of elements that smudges when you hold it, stains when it touches something, and causes a huge cloud of toxic air when you burn it. You have to admit, the Coal Industry certainly is inventive.

  24. P.D. says:

Jane @22, Jon is a favorite of mine. So is Paul (Rsomething). They have done more for Vets then any Right-wing politicain. They truly are selfless when it comes to the treatment of our Vets. I truly admire that. When so many have left our servicemen and women behind, they are always there.

P.D., it’s Paul Rieckhoff at IAVA. He’s great, too. It’s probably a good thing that this coal ad didn’t mention his group, I’d hate to see him mad.

  28. Wayne A. Schneider says:

How does the ACCCE keep any credibility?

As far as they’re concerned, as long as someone is willing to pay them to help promote an idea, no matter how foul or repugnant, they will consider themselves as having “credibility”.

True, there is no way to cleanly mine coal, transferring by slurry pumping is relatively clean (unless a pipe breaks) and burning it requires “trapping” all the output and sequestering it where? Back into the ground. We have the science. Our only other real option is Nuclear, which still leaves us with poluting the ground we stand on.

so we’re back to square one. wait is anybody looking at hydrogen power plants?

  31. Zooey says:

    Random,

Wouldn’t “cleaning” coal make any resulting power extremely expensive?

Nuclear will never get done in this country. It takes too long, and it’s way too expensive.

Wind and solar are the way to go. Clean, clean, clean.

  32. P.D. says:

Random@30, I was watching the ‘Daily Show’ when Al Gore was on. And I believe we have the technology to do it. It’s just Big business doesn’t give a sh*t. The obsession for money and power trump all. Already, other countries are kicking our ass in green energy (not including medical breakthroughs, because the Bush Adm. sucked). But that’s the American way now isn’t it? Go backwards and just PRAY for things to get better.

  37. pauldd says:

I’m looking at the “clean coal” and “nuclear power” comments above and believe you’re off-base.

Efficiency is our lowest cost option with the best returns. We’ll need fossil fuels going forward but with alternative sources (wind/solar/hydro/geo-thermal) we can reduce our dependence drastically with today’s technologies.

Nuclear is off the chart for cost.

Amory Lovins is the the foremost authority on the subject. Been so for 2 decades. Check out the link…

    Cheers

  38. RandomChaos says:

Efficiency is only a stop-gap. I was not extolling nuclear, to the contrary. How long do you think our organic resources are going to last? It’s not like the planet is continually replenishing.
But there is Viable technology for alternative energy Allready being utilized in the real world. Just not in our country.
Fossil fuels are not a necessity anymore.
What say you about Hydrogen power and Ion engines. Not science fiction. REAL.

    CitiDC says:

Okay, as a NYer I have to ask: what makes New Haven-style pizza ‘New Haven Style”?

  40. pauldd says:

BTW – Clean coal is considered to be an oxymoron. There are several plants in operation (I think in the north-central US or Canada with tar-sands or shale-oil) that are extracting the CO2 and forcing it back into the ground under pressure to sequester it. The unintended consequences (including ground water contamination) are TBD. I think PBS did a couple TV programs on the subject (Frontline and/or Bill Moyers Journal).

  41. P.D. says:

Think of the Irony or Hypocricy, Tomorrow is VETERAN’S day. Man, that is a omen.

  42. pauldd says:

Random@38: Hydrogen is a storage medium not a fuel source. In other words, it does not occur naturally in the environment; must be produced by burning fossil fuels.

If we adopted conservation and efficiency measures and invested in alternative sources (as I said above; solar/wind/hydro/geo-thermal) we could stretch our fossil fuels out for several centuries. In the meantime, we continue to work on alternatives. We’d reduce pollution and replace our dependence on carbon sources.

  48. pauldd says:

Jack@44, I looked at the link and it is clear that CO2 levels are higher now than they have been within the last 400,000+ years. Everyone, look at Jackass’s “proof“. Also note the rate of increase (positive slope of the CO2 line) exceeds the rate for any time in that same 400,000 year period.

Geology classes aside, it’s clear that we are in uncharted waters regarding CO2 levels.

What does this mean to you?

No reason to legislate yet another tax without any benefit

Except, it’s clear that reduction in atmospheric carbon (along with other green-house gases) is in the interest of all humanity as well as our co-habitant species.

Today is a holiday – remember our veterans – my grandmother used to make us stop our activity on that day off school at 11:00 AM, face the east and place our hands over our hearts.

TP must be taking the day off. We could start our own “open thread.”

Repugniscum are more than eager to deem the tragedy at Ft. Hood a terrorist attack so they can claim it happened on Obama’s watch.

Blackwater paid Iraqi officials at least a million dollars in hush money after Blackwater employees killed civilians in a deliberate and blatant attack. Yet, Blackwater remains in Iraq — probably because they are the armed guards for our officials who travel there, and more than likely, because they know too much about what actually happened in Iraq.
They “know where the bodies are buried” figuratively and probably literally as well.

  62. Zimzone says:

I want to express deep gratitude to all my fellow Veterans today.

Your sacrifices & heroic efforts are intricately woven into the fabric of American history.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your service.

Today is a day to set aside political & religious differences to reflect on our brave young men & women who offered the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives to protect us.

America’s debt to you & your families cannot ever be paid in full.

Perhaps someday our World will not choose to go to war. That would be the ultimate victory in mankind’s evolution. Until then, know that your service to your Country is held in our highest esteem.

    THANK YOU!

  63. Marie says:

RANDI KAYE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: There are more uninsured in red states than there are in blue states, which is interesting since all Republican senators are expected to vote against the public health care option.

Do you think Americans might become aware of that? Repugs are willing to prolong the suffering of their constituents for political reasons, the main one being to obstruct anything and everything in an effort to cause an Obama failure.

  64. Divided We Fall says:

This isn’t surprising. More then likely the utility and coal company owners are republican and are just mirroring what the Bush administration did for eight years, use our military as props and photo ops.

  65. RUCerious says:

I posted this at the zoo this morning. Doesn’t seem like I get to hang there much these days with Jayden crawling around the place…but anyhoo..

Happy veterans day, and a crisp salute to all who served in the military, and a special thought for all who lost their lives, came back maimed, injured, sometimes both physically and mentally.

I’d like to share with you yesterday’s special event.
My daughter Amber’s elementary school had a 9:00 assembly honoring their families’ veterans.
Since I had to work, I asked my nearly blind, 88 year old WWII Navy veteran dad if he’d like to attend.
He and my mom attended the ceremony, my dad orchestrated a roll call of the veterans attending, and all were delighted by the performance the students put on.
The first graders sang a song, with several of the kids doing a solo part. When Amber’s turn came up, my mom said she just beamed as she belted out her part.
I can’t tell you how proud I am of both my dad, and my daughter.
So to all, enjoy the day, even if you have to work, as I do today. (Although I get a sense that not a lot of ‘work’ is going to get done..heh..)

  66. DNFP says:

Today is a day to set aside political & religious differences to reflect on our brave young men & women who offered the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives to protect us.

Agreed, but at no time during Vietnam, Korea, Afghanistan or Iraq were we actually being “protected”, unless you count personal agendas as National priorities.

I love all my veteran friends, family, and strangers deeply. I offer my sincerest praise and thanks for your servitude.

So while we use this holiday to remember those who’ve bravely gone before us, let’s also remember TO NEVER PUT OUR PEOPLE IN HARMS WAY FOR A GODDAMN LIE EVER AGAIN.

Hundreds of thousands of families lives ruined by lies and false pretenses is enough to make rational folks eschew any sort of military enlistment in perpetuity, throughout the Universe.

  67. noseeum says:

I live near a small city that is home to a Veterans hospital.
There is a high concentration of homeless persons, men and women, most of them veterans.
They live on the streets and in the nearby desert because it is relatively warm and they are close to the hospital.
Work is hard to find, and there are a number of busy intersections where they are forced to stand with signs that read Will Work for Food.

How many other civilized nations allow their veterans to suffer like this?

Thanks to all veterans today, and every day, for your service.

  71. Zimzone says:

    DNFP,
I agree with your sentiments, and as I stated above…

We may not live to see that day, but working toward it is honorable.
