Hume Corrects O’Reilly’s False Claim That ‘Folks Don’t Want’ The Public Option: It’s Actually ‘Kind Of Popular’

Last night on Fox News, host Bill O’Reilly and analyst Brit Hume discussed the prospects for the Senate passing a health care reform bill. After struggling with the terminology for the “public option,” O’Reilly ultimately concluded that “all the polls say” that “the folks don’t want it.”

Hume, a regular Fox News misinformer, surprisingly corrected O’Reilly, noting that Americans actually support the public option:

O’REILLY: They call it, you know, the public sector. What is the –

HUME: Public option, you mean?

O’REILLY: Public option, whatever. The folks don’t want it. … But it looks to me like they have maybe 55 votes to pass it. And that means they could be filibustered and never come up for a vote.

HUME: That’s what it looks like right now. The public option, actually some polls show that the public option standing by itself is not at all unpopular, but it is kind of popular. But that depends on how the poll question is raised. … We don’t need to go into all that right now.

Watch it:

Those trying to derail reform with a public option try to claim that Americans don’t support it. “All the polls now indicate substantial opposition to this particular type of health care reform,” Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said last night on Fox. But Hume is right. Americans do support the public option, as recent polling shows:

CNN/Opinion Research, Oct. 30 – Nov. 1: 55 percent support “creating a public health insurance option administered by the federal government that would compete with plans offered by private health insurance companies.”

Ipsos/McClatchy, Oct. 30 – Nov. 1: 51 percent support the “creation of a public entity to directly compete with existing health insurance companies.”

Other recent polls, such as USA Today/Gallup and Washington Post/ABC News, have found majority support for the public option — results that are consistent with other polling on this question throughout the health care debate this year.

Indeed, large majorities in Connecticut support the public option but Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT), the state’s junior independent senator, has repeatedly said he will filibuster any bill that contains a public option. Like Hume, Lieberman doesn’t want to talk about polling support for the public option either, reportedly saying that poll respondents are simply “confused.”

Of course, to O’Reilly… “folks” or “people” is defined as conservatives who are either fantastically wealthy and can afford to pay for decent health insurance coverage…or people who rely on FoxNews and believe the public option will rape their children at night and turn America into a nazi-socailist-fascist-communist-marxist-totalitarian FEMA run death camp.

    _____________________________________________________________

I look for this to be the new way Republicans explain away any poll results that don’t fit their agenda. Just claim that the poll respondents are “confused”. And if that doesn’t work, claim they’re “misinformed”, or even “stupid”.

Unfortunately, that can work both ways. We could say the same thing about the forty-something percent of poll respondents who say they don’t want a public option.

But we know that labeling the majority of the American public as “confused” doesn’t do much to win them over. It just makes one look pompous and arrogant.

Lieberman really doesn’t plan to run again, does he? I can think of no other reason for him to burn so many bridges.

O’Reilly, Lieberman, et al, are going to keep repeating the lie because they think that eventually people will believe the lie. I think Lieberman needs a reality check by his constituents who need to be heard rather than ignored. It is up to the media in Connecticut to bring Lieberman to heel on the issue rather than the other way around. He will find it very difficult to swim against the tide of public opinion.

Of note, Hume was a one-time protege of Jack Anderson who won a Pulitzer for exposing secret negotiations between the U.S. and Pakistan during the Indo-Pakistani war in the early 70s. He also broke Iran Contra, and generally was a progressive muckraker who investigated government corruption. Anderson in turn was a protege of Drew Pearson an early loan voice against McCarthy (incidentally, Greta van Susteren’s father was McCarthy’s campaign manager).

For Hume maybe he learned a little bit with Anderson before Murdochian fithly lucre and sometimes does the right thing.

    – CNN/Opinion Research, Oct. 30 – Nov. 1: 55 percent support “creating a public health insurance option administered by the federal government that would compete with plans offered by private health insurance companies.”

“What insurance companies want is to stave off the one thing that truly intimidates them: having to compete on a level playing field against a public health insurance plan. Knowing that we will have the ability to walk away from the private insurance industry altogether if they keep abusing our trust is what frightens them, and what might just scare them straight in the future.” By Monica Sanchez @ insurancecompanyrules.org

But with the mandate for everyone to purchase Sickness & Injury Insurance, we will be creating millions of new forced customers for the S&I Insurance industry.

We may be reforming some rules, but we’re creating a huge “GOLDEN EGG” for the S&I Insurance industry.

We need to put a stake in the heart of the predatory, obsolete, yearly S&I Insurance industry. Let it go the way of the Buggy Whip and Slide Rule industries!

I think you can swap out Republicans with “we all” and their with “our”.

He says in some polls. He doesn’t say in all polls, which would, to a logical person, indicate that there are polls that represent that it is both popular and unpopular. So rather than continually feeding the divisive beast that is our current political heritage, why not just see that we all may actually want, intrinsically, the same things. Painting one another with a wide brush because of the dictates of those whom are supposed to represent us is ignorant at best.

To me that is some of the power that the governing bodies hold is that they can continually divide us instead of us being “one nation, under God, indivisible…”

We seem to get so caught up in how the messages and meanings are interpreted by the pundits ON BOTH SIDES that we fail to really try and understand the opposing viewpoint.

We refuse to listen, and that denies us the overall success I think we all want.

The “bickering” has gotten very divisive and nasty. Pretty soon we’re going to be a third-world country as in Mexico or the Phillippines.

  64. Xisithrus says:

Guzman has filed a complaint against News Corporation, the New York Post and the paper’s editor in chief Col Allan in the Southern District Court of New York, alleging harassment as well as “unlawful employment practices and retaliation.”

As part of the 38-page complaint, Guzman paints the Post newsroom as a male-dominated frat house and Allan in particular as sexist, offensive and domineering. Guzman alleges that she and others were routinely subjugated to misogynistic behavior. She says that hiring practices at the paper — as well as her firing — were driven by racial prejudices rather than merit.

NY POST is a Murdoch paper. Anyone surprised they behave like Falafel O’Reilly does toward women?

  65. JAJ says:

HF made the following statement, “I hate it when reality does not back up a good talking point.” I see nothing wrong with it. The reality in question, polling data, certainly doesn’t back up O’Reilly’s talking point. It’s sort of like Huxley’s (Darwin’s bulldog) observation about a beautiful theory being spoiled by an ugly fact.

The reactionaries have a whole bunch of “beautiful” talking points, but unfortunately for them, reality doesn’t concur with the talking points and they have to keep changing them to keep ahead of reality. Again, sort of like Darwin’s statement that change was brought about by selection against things that don’t work.

  76. Texas Aggie says:
