Marine reservist chases, assaults Greek Orthodox priest whom he mistook for an Arab terrorist.

Picture 1Alexios Marakis, a Greek Orthodox priest visiting the U.S., got lost in Tampa and tried to stop and ask directions from Marine reservist Jasen D. Bruce. But instead of offering help, “Bruce struck the priest on the head with a tire iron.” The reservist believed Marakis, who spoke limited English, was an Arab terrorist. Bruce chased the priest for three blocks, “and even called 911 to say that an Arabic man tried to rob him.” According to a news release:

“During the chase, the suspect called 911 and claimed an Arabic male attempted to rob him and he was going to take him into custody,” a Tampa Police Department news release states. “When officers arrived, the suspect claimed the man was a terrorist.”

Police arrested Bruce for “aggravated battery with a deadly weapon” and are investigating whether he committed a hate crime.

  30. Bluestocking says:

Reminds me of the aftermath of 9-11 when Sikhs, Hindus, and even a few Latinos were similarly mistaken for Arabs/Muslims and physically attacked by Americans who were so consumed with hatred and fear (not to mention wanton stupidity) that they apparently assumed anyone with darker skin and a beard and/or turban couldn’t possibly be anything but a terrorist — this in spite of the fact that Sikhs and Hindus have actually had their own share of conflicts with Muslims.

Speaking as someone who lived overseas for several years as a child and fortunately learned at a very young age that the world does not revolve around the United States, I’m ashamed at the dismal lack of knowledge which most people in this country still have about other cultures…especially since ignorance is really no longer an excuse in the age of the internet.

(His lawyer) Jeff Brown says the Rev. Alexios Marakis followed his 28-year-old Lance Cpl. Jasen Bruce into the parking garage of his Tampa apartment building, made sexual comments and grabbed the reservist’s genitals.

Sounds like a pretty desperate defense considering that all accounts have Jasen calling 911 saying that he thought he was being robbed by a terrorist.

  42. mary lacewing says:

Bruce also told police he heard Marakis yell, “Allahu akbar!” — Arabic for “God is great,” according to Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

Marakis, however, does not speak Arabic, McElroy said. He speaks Greek.

As a resident of Florida I would like to state unequivocally that its not just the people in Florida! Today Virginia is executing an idiot who terrorized the DC suburbs for three weeks in 2002, kililing a number of people including an FBI agent who was just 3 blocks from where I lived in Falls Church VA at the time.

Today there was a shooting in a mall in Portland Oregon

Last week someone wigged out on an army base in Texas and killed a bunch of people. Not long ago a carpenter brought a shotgun to a middle school in New York state when he wanted to have a chat with the principal.

Crazy people aren’t just here in Florida (although we have more than our share). We live in a country and culture where differences are more easily “resolved” with force than with reason. We live in a country and a culture where guns are easily obtained and unfortunately used. We live in a country and a culture where violence on television and in movies is part of a multi billion dollar “entertainment” industry. Its all of us, not just Floridians.

This was an easy mistake to make. Everyone knows that terrorists always stop to ask their future victims directions. They always try to disguise themselves as Christians, not run-of-the-meal American drive-by Christians that make the rules as they go, but the real thing.

If they have an accent other than that common to hispanics, blacks, non-hispanic caucasians (all regional dialects) and hispanic and non-hispanic Native Americans, odds are they have a Arabic accent and if that’s the case, they are certainly terrorists.

If they can outrun a military reservist within 3 blocks, they are either a terrorist or don’t like getting the crap beat out of them with a tire rod, but considering how closely this guy meets the other criteria, his running skills become secondary.

    Was this a hate crime?

Yes, but not by this reservist, by the Bush Administration for brainwashing him and promoting hate only to create a smokescreen to allow cronies to rape our treasury via illegal occupations of sovereign nations achieved through lies.

The hate crimes also include The Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act which were intended to instill fear on a large part of our population, namely the lower 98% income bracket.

They still do to this day for those know what these acts allow our president alone to do to any American citizen at The President’s discretion.

I was pointed out as someone who might be able to answer a question involving Obama and stimulus checks. The question was “When will our N-word president be sending us a stimulus check?”

The young girl had no respect for my 65 years of living and gloated when telling me how I’ll be euthanized under Obama’s health care. Attempts to educated these two about our system of government didnt work and the young girl sat there repeating “Everything you’re saying is going in one ear and out the other”, making be think of the republiscums that were objecting Saturday morning.

Having encountered that level of ignorence and then reading this article exemplifies to me the importance of education in a person’s life. Our young people need to learn more than how to pass some test so schools will receive funding.

Why yes, there’s a basic course in anti-clericalism for young officers at the military academy, including physical pre-emptive self-defense. (snicker snark)

Actually, Luis, this guy is a Marine Reserve enlisted man and probably did not go to THE military academy, which for the Navy and Marine Corps is the US Naval Academy. If he had gone there and graduated, he’d be an officer, not an enlisted man. The same would obtain if he’d attended the US Military Academy (US Army) or the US Air Force Academy, although those academies, like the Navy, usually commission directly to their respective services.

I think he did this on his own. It probably has very little to do with the fact that he’s a Marine Reservist; what that means is that he spends most of his time as a civilian, attends a Reserve Unit one weekend a month and goes on active duty for training for two weeks a year. The Marines would not, as a matter of policy, encourage him to assault people at random on the street or in parking garages.

Basically yeah, except that I didn’t think of him as a “terrorist” but as a “law-breaking murderer”. But then again, I use the standard definition of “terrorist” as someone who attacks the civilian population in order to create terror.

But the same thing applies: the shooter did kill a dozen persons and will receive a trial which will probably end in a death sentence. Good riddance.

Well, not so sunny since two weeks ago or so. Although we enjoyed an inusually long summer, time has changed by now, and right now is windy and cold, for our standards in my city.

But well, not that bad at all.

HF doesn’t get that a psychiatrist, Army or not, should be one of the first to know you do not take a life. Medical doctors save and preserve lives. The fact that a psychiatrist snapped and took 12 lives has to be examined past “Is he a terrorist?”, because that is a defacto fault position when you know he is Muslim.

Stupid people want a terrorist witch hunt with a drumhead trial. It would be cleansing for the FOX News’ of the world to have hours of “Hysteria: Muslims in the military” hit pieces to promote their jaded Judeo-Christian ideals.

Once again, you’re wrong, and you still don’t know dick about any of us here.

  223. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Absent any real reform (by which I mean the health insurance companies are removed from the equation), a personal mandate to purchase health insurance given the fact that this bill is a huge give-away to the health insurance companies, is not something I could support. I do support employer mandates, and that especially applies to Wal-Mart.

  224. Wayne A. Schneider says:

You’re right, honey. Wrong thread. My apologies go out to the regular TP community. My middle finger goes out to the trolls.

  225. WaltTheMan says:

This is the beginning of the end! Why anyone could confuse Greek with Arabic and a Greek with an Arab is beyond comprehension. And then someone asking for assistance is attacked. This has to be the Christian way?

  226. cd says:

[....]From the link which mary lacewing so thoughtfully provided at comment #42:

“Bruce also told police he heard Marakis yell, “Allahu akbar!” — Arabic for “God is great,” according to Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy.”

While I agree that many of the comments are leaping to some unfounded conclusions, at least this one had some factual basis.”

Thank you for the information Jane. However the assumption that the accused is a Christian or that the accused attacked the priest because the accused is a Christian remains without factual basis since one need not consider themself a Christian to have an unwarranted hate of Muslims.

Just look at Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens.

Get a load of that U of NM soccer player Elizabeth Lambert? She yanks a girl to the ground by her ponytail, violently trips up a player for a soccer ball and, with a menacing look, walks up to a player and punches her in the back/breast.

In the apology statement, however, she says none of those actions reflect on her character.

    Get the gist?

  228. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Getting back on topic, this Marine’s actions were inexcusable. He lied to the authorities, and for that alone he could get drummed out of the Corps, and should be. Lying to the public authorities is conduct unbecoming a Marine. His excuse was stupid and completely unbelievable. He reacted out of hate, not out of any sense of duty. Did he really believe the guy was a terrorist? Being stupid isn’t a crime, but acting violently out of stupidity is a crime. Charge him with the assualt and battery charges, and charge him with the hate crimes separately. (Don’t blow it by just prosecuting the hate crime and lose it so he goes completely free.)

All those trials can take place after the Marines send him to prison for what he did.

What I’ve read about this came from a letter written by someone in CBO to a GOOPer Congress critter. I’m paraphrasing here…

The five years is in there all right, for WILLFUL FELONY FRAUD, and not for “not having insurance”.

Of course, that little distinction hasn’t prevented righties from soiling themselves over the verbiage.

What I’d like to know is did the Priest really yell at the man?

I’ve met a couple of Marines and some of them weren’t very bright.

I could see how what happend at Fort Hood could put a guy on edge.

One of the linked reports says the incident took place around 6:35 p.m. after the priest followed several cars into the Seaport Channelside Apartments.

Is that after dark? and he was following people?

If so the man was acting a bit sketchy.

I can understand trying to speak a language you aren’t very ccomfortable with can be aggravating however if all the things above are true (it was dark, he had been following people) and he yelled at one of the people he had been following he really made a mistake.

It’s the Marine though who’s going to pay for what he did though since we can not have people assaulting others unless it’s in self defense.

    ***********************************************************

Huh? With all due respect, what part of the following fragment (quoted verbatim from the information above) do you not understand?

The reservist believed Marakis, who spoke limited English, was an Arab terrorist…”During the chase, the suspect called 911 and claimed an Arabic male attempted to rob him and he was going to take him into custody,” a Tampa Police Department news release states. “When officers arrived, the suspect claimed the man was a terrorist.

The fact that Bruce believed Marakis to be an “Arab male” and a “terrorist” (conclusions which were inaccurate on both counts) implies that he very likely also believed him to be a Muslim. Judging by the rhetoric, it appears that a good many Americans are laboring under the mistaken idea that the words “Arab” and “Muslim” are equivalent to and/or virtually interchangeable with the word “terrorist” (perhaps in part because the only image which most Americans have seen of Arabs in the media over the last thirty years is that of Muslim Terrorist). What other reason could Bruce possibly have had for describing Marakis as a “terrorist” to the officers who arrived at the scene, particularly when he had already stated his conclusion that Marakis was an Arab? It’s true that none of the information above suggests Bruce was a Christian…but there’s plenty which suggests he believed Marakis to be a Muslim. One hardly needs to be a rocket scientist in order to figure out that when Bruce encountered a man with swarthy skin speaking in an unfamiliar language — one who in addition may very well have been wearing robes as many Greek Orthodox priests do — he probably jumped to the immediate conclusion that the man must be an Arab based on his appearance meaning that he was almost certainly a Muslim and a terrorist as well…which led to Bruce’s attempt to incapacitate or at least injure him.

  344. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Zooey, here is my upcoming letter to the editor. They only allow us 250 words so I had to cram my thoughts together:

    Vote “NO” on December 8th!

Back in September 2008 Congress was told to pass the original TARP bill ASAP or our economy would collapse, there was even a threat of Martial Law if they didn’t pass the bill. On December 8th, Fridley City Hall is asking residents to vote yes on their Charter Amendment, which would give the City more power to increase taxes and fee’s. The City, along with their supporters have been telling Fridley residents that they might have to cut back on important services such as snow removal and the Police Department budget, they also repeat scary scenarios like our City deteriorating, our home values plummeting and our streets becoming unsafe if we don’t vote yes at the Special election. Don’t fall for the fear tactics again. The City has known for awhile that money would be tight yet they kept on spending money on projects such as replacing fences in two of our parks, resurfacing basketball and tennis courts and making new park trails. Were these considered top priorities when the City budget was so tight? The City continued to forge ahead and spend money they didn’t have (LGA) which is the equivalent of someone purchasing a new Cadillac with the hopes of winning the lottery in the future. If the City has to cut some services until the economy picks up so be it, but don’t fall for their scare tactics. It’s time for the City to become fiscally responsible. Vote “NO” on December 8th.

Right now the question of religion in the reservists case doesn’t matter much since the person he attacked was a Greek Orthodox priest. If this had been a Muslim of any fashion, the sirens would be screaming and every fact would be known.

I don’t think it’ll matter if I was right or wrong with my take on this, but I was putting into context how any deranged Christian can be as dangerous as any rhetorically dangerous Muslim. And given how stupid things are getting with the Ft. Hood Muslim paranoia, I thought my analogy was more timely even though it may lack factual support right now.

— Mary Lacewing

    *********************************************************

Not to mention the fact that one would think it might be a little difficult for someone with “limited English” like Marakis to make himself understood by the typical American well enough and easily enough to sufficiently communicate sexual comments, particularly since many Americans are impatient with people who don’t speak English well and they seem to have a tin ear (one which they don’t always exert any effort to overcome) when the person in question has a thick accent.

It also seems extremely unlikely that a clergyman of any faith would make sexual comments to and grab the genitals of a passing stranger, even in private! Yes, I know that some Catholic priests have not succeeded in maintaining their oath of celibacy and that some clergy members of other faiths have similarly engaged in unethical conduct with people from their congregations…but at least as far as I know, most of them generally choose to prey on those with whom they’ve already established some degree of familiarity and trust rather than a complete stranger!

I just had a thought…I wonder if the fact that Marakis is a priest made Bruce (or more likely his lawyer) decide to change the story which Bruce gave officers at the scene in the hopes that people will unconsciously associate him in their minds with the children who’ve been molested by certain Catholic priests and be more inclined to acquit him or at least take pity on him. I don’t think it’s as far-fetched as all that…everyone’s entitled to a defense, but the fact that Bruce confessed his pursuit of Marakis in the process of calling 911 and accused him of being a terrorist when the officers arrived (with the implication that the blow he struck Marakis was arguably a defensive one), getting a “not guilty” verdict might not be that easy.

  380. jeevmon says:

We really need to ask ourselves whether it makes sense to allow white men to serve in the military. I mean, recent history alone shows us how dangerous they are. The shootings in that church in Tennessee- done by a white man. The health club shootings in Pittsburgh? A white male perpetrator. The shooting at the Holocaust Museum? White male perpetrator. Dr. George Tiller? Murdered in church by a white man. The Oklahoma City and Olympic Park bombings? White men. Let’s not forget that the Unabomber? Also a white man.

Now, white men may claim that they are peaceful and tolerant, but there is clearly a strain in their culture that celebrates violence against those that are non-white and/or non-male. Until the white male community takes the necessary steps to isolate the violent extremists in their midst and report them to the appropriate authorities, we have to treat them all as potentially dangerous. It actually makes sense to start the process to deport all white men, except for those who can prove that they are not a threat.

Clearly this guy thought anyone speaking a foreign language was a terrorist and most likely because of the repeated use of the word terror [by the previous admin] to get them behind the military operations they had planned. Its a war on a word [terror]

I had the same thought. And while Orthodox priests are certainly capable of falling off their vows, the church has avoided a lot of the problems that’s plagued the Catholic church by not prohibiting its priests from being married (as long as they marry before they become priests). Of course, I doubt this guy knew that little tidbit – most don’t – since he certainly didn’t know a darn thing about what an Orthodox priest would look like.

But poor Fr.Alexios, unless he has been elevated to the level of Protopresbyter, would not have been allowed to wear a pectoral cross. But you can’t see a cross from behind a priest…
The churches of the Byzantine tradition ought to consider this incident amid the rising anger against muslims and climate of fear some of our ‘news’ agencies have promulgated. It would not be that big an innovation to have all their priests wear crosses for ’safety’s sake’.

Now, I don’t think anyone should say either on their forum. I asked them why they did not censor both and they did not respond.

“TAMPA — Two years before police said he hit a Greek Orthodox priest over the head with a tire iron, Jasen Bruce had a run-in with another stranger, a tow truck driver who said the Marine left him hurting for months.

Steven Ray Allen, now 59, remembers a time when he towed cars outside the Calta’s Fitness Club on Gandy Boulevard. And he remembers the incident that made him stop.

It was Halloween afternoon, 2007. Someone had parked a silver Jaguar in a tow-away zone. As Allen backed his tow truck bed up to the Jag, he says seven or eight large men came out of the gym and surrounded him.

“They puffed their chests out like they were He-Man,” Allen said, “like they were trying to intimidate me.”

Bruce came out, and they got into an argument.

“He was just flat mean, telling me that I wasn’t taking his car, that he would beat me into the ground first,” Allen said.

The Marine jumped over the tow truck and pushed him in the back with both hands, Allen told police. Bruce then got in his car, moved it, parked and then got out and pushed him again, this time in the chest, knocking him 7 to 10 feet.

Bruce is a muscular 6 feet 3 and 210 pounds.

“My back hurt for months,” Allen said. “Here I am, an overweight 57-year-old man, and he has to come over and beat me up. That’s a real proud thing to do.”

Bruce pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor battery charge and adjudication was withheld. But that didn’t stop his continued harassment, Allen said.”…
“Mortello said she saw Bruce regularly because he subleased a space in the gym to run Y-Age Clinic. On the clinic’s Web page, Bruce touts the benefits of increasing one’s testosterone and human growth hormone.

“These guys get what they call ‘roid rage,” Allen said. “He looked like he had taken one pill too many that day.”

  430. Historian says:

Richard Stallman: You refer to leftist fascists and leftist socialists. Make up your mind. First of all, fascism, by definition, is a rightist group. You can’t be a leftist fascist. And fascism and socialism are diametric opposites on the political spectrum. Fascists believe in a hierarchical authoritarian government, much like Bush was creating with the US Patriot Act and his use of “signing statements,” which exempted him from enforcing laws he didn’t agree with, but which he was too cowardly/”politically astute” to veto.

Socialists _are_ leftists. That is to say, they believe that part of the government’s job, besides providing for the common defense, is to promote the general welfare of citizens through things like labor protection laws and health care. If you are an employee, you should thank the leftist union members who forced management into accepting a 40 hour work week and got congress to pass a minimum wage law.

You really shouldn’t hurl epithets unless you a) know what they mean, b) are sure they don’t apply to you, and c) know that they’re viewed as negatives by your targets.

Why is it so hard to believe that I can be a Muslim and a Republican? My last name is private. I’m an educated small business owner who believes whole-heartedly in capitalism. Are you saying that my faith makes it impossible for me to believe in conservative ideals?

I’m also not married to Fox News. I watch all the news channels. Every show makes mistakes and misinforms. I’m simply stating that to blame a news organization for a mass murder committed by a misguided individual is ridiculous.

HF, you are not welcome in my Republican party. The people I associate with are not racists or prejudice. Don’t know what part of the country you are in, but it makes me ashamed to know that there are Conservatives like you out there.

I have no problem with Muslims but I know how hard it is for service members to come back to the states and not be a bit startled and even sometimes aggressive towards people of middle eastern descent. In War it is fight our die when your enemy REALLY wants you dead. When you come home it is very hard to get rid of those instincts some never do and keep living it over and over every day. Like a living nightmare from H&LL. People being blown to bits. Freinds dying in your arms and you unable to save them. Just a side note not all people in Iraq “look” typicaly middle eastern they have red heads. Trust me they can be a real trip when you see them.

Thank you very much, George W. Bush, for nurturing fear and prejudice, now strong and sturdy, perfectly modeled by Jasen, your offspring. Ain’t you proud?

  434. mwoman says:

solder_girl, you need to go back to school and study some history and geography. Greece is not part of the Middle East. It is part of the European Community though. That’s a good place to start for you. Basic facts always do wonders when dealing with ignorance, stereotypes, etc… Then again, sometimes it just don’t matter with prejudice. Prejudice is Prejudice. Mighty and difficult to conquer! Now that may be a war worth fighting.

Really interesting to see here that many of the comments voted down had to do with enlightening others about other people and other cultures from around the world and here in the US. But it seems like some people just ain’t interested in listening. They prefer instead to cling to their warped versions and visions of the world.

    jeevmon says:

    Hilarious! And a splendid idea.

Never ceases to amaze me how the right gravitate to the left, like here, and other places…

    Every time!
    Homeless, they are.
    Homeless.
But they so love being punished with words!
