Under Pressure From Tea Party Activists, Charleston GOP Censures Lindsey Graham For Bipartisanship

On Monday, the Charleston County Republican Party’s executive committee “took the unusual step” of officially censuring Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC). The local GOP committee admonished Graham for stepping across party lines to work with Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) on a bipartisan clean energy bill and other pieces of legislation. The censure stated that Graham’s “bipartisanship continues to weaken the Republican brand and tarnish the ideals of freedom.”

Part of the fury from the right against Graham is being spurred by the oil and coal industry. The oil company front group “American Energy Alliance” has blanketed South Carolina with ads smearing Graham for seeking to address climate change.

The pressure against Graham has also stemmed from his criticism of hate radio and Fox News host Glenn Beck. “Only in America can you make that much money crying,” said Graham, mocking Beck in early October. Beck has responded with a slime campaign against Graham that he typically reserves for liberals. The leader of the Charleston Republican Party, Lin Bennett, is also a member of Glenn Beck’s 9/12 organization in South Carolina. According to its website, the Charleston GOP claims to work closely with tea party groups and Beck’s 9/12 activists in selecting its favored candidates.

Will Graham be able to stand up to the angry backlash being cultivated by far right voices and entrenched corporations interests? At a Graham town hall in Greenville last month, activist Harry Kimball of “RINO HUNT” protested by constructing a display that portrayed Graham, as well as other GOP moderates, being flushed down a toilet:

KIMBALL: This is for every RINO who has failed to represent us. [...] [the toilet represents] flushing them, flushing them.

Watch it:

Graham’s spokesman defended his boss to reporters yesterday, claiming the senator has a “90 percent conservative voting record.” Unfortunately for Graham, that may not prevent him from being “Scozzafavaed.”

Update In Beaufort, South Carolina, a crowd of tea party activists displayed signs which "bore messages such as 'downsize D.C.' and 'Rush and Glenn for president' -- an apparent allusion to political talk show hosts Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck."

So now GRAHAM isn’t ‘Pure’ enough? Dear Lord. Is that Hell I hear freezing over? These people are truly insane. But hey, if they want to eat their own, who I’m I to stop them?

  2. Stukas over Disneyland says:

And if you’ve ever been “Scozzafavaed” you know how painful that can be.

  3. missmolly says:

This illustrates that the Republican Party has absolutely no intention of working with Democrats in any way, shape, or form. Those Republicans who see bipartisanship and cooperation as a way of making some progress will be punished. The very idea that Graham is a RINO is laughable, but when someone like Graham is considered to be too liberal for the GOP, that whole party is sinking. There just aren’t enough super-extremists in this country to create a majority — not when one has to be considerably right of the John Birch Society to qualify.

Tell me again why we should delay needed legislation in order to get some buy-in from the minority party?

  4. P.D. says:

I admit, I love that term. ‘Scozzafavaed’ It has a delicious ring to it.

  5. Hoodathunk says:

It is amazing to see how American politics have evolved. We now have a single party system where the party defines what is proper and right, all members of said party are answerable to the party for hewing strictly to the party line. Failure to do so results in censure. Anyone who doesn’t agree with the party is deemed an enemy.

    Na vash drovie, tovarish.

  6. SP Biloxi says:

Ah, lookie there. Lady Graham got his hand slapped for crossing party lines to work with those pesky Dems. Oh, the horror. I can see Graham clinging to his pearls when he got chastized. I’m all broken up in tears for Lady Graham.

The GOP are certainly falling apart by the seams. Who else is next on the list of GOPs to be “Scozzafaved?”

  8. larkohio says:

The dumb bums! The whole purpose of the Congress as outlined in the Constitution is that both houses work together for the good of the citizens. So, I must conclude that they do not want their Senator to follow the Constitution? Are they are really so ignorant?

  9. sscncturn64 says:

Man the repugs are sick. They dont care if your a dem or a repug. If your not for big oil and the corperations then they will do anything to try and destroy you. I cant believe there are still people who follow the repugs and their policies.
If you cant see that the repugs dont care about the citizens of the U.S.then I guess you deserve to be a repug.

  10. P.D. says:

lark@9, What do you expect? These people are from SC. Religion and guns are their motto. I look at this way, will the GOP and ‘Tea-Baggers’ force Graham out? Damn, that is something I want to see. It will get really ugly.

  11. Zooey says:

Keep up the good work, teabaggers. We need more Dems in the House & Senate.

  12. P.D. says:

ssc@10, there was a new Gallup poll out saying Repugs are getting a surge. I didn’t believe it at first. But then again, Americans are lazy and ignorant. Picking up and reading a newspaper is exercise for them.

  18. Bob says:

    Lindsey Graham, really?

If they censure their own for bipartisanship, why would anyone (I’m looking at you, Obama) continue to strive for bipartisanship?

R policies have been proven not to work and yet they’re demanding no compromise? It’s insane.

  19. Jackie says:

Miss Graham isn’t the chosen one any more. The GOP is falling apart and lady Graham will have to end his career in 2014. Now Britney Cantor has to be careful making friends with Miss Graham, the GOP might not like that. Now I watched the discussion between Miss Graham and Justice Sotomayor during the confirmation hearing. It was clear a cat fight between two woman. Now Miss Graham’s bio clears up any misunderstanding. Miss Graham picked the right career to keep him from going to Vietnam and give him time for a social life. As Michael Jackson’s song said KEEP IT IN THE CLOSET.

  20. Liz Morrison says:

It’s one poll. But ya.. it is a bad sign – we really need a huge.. far more noticeable trend in the economy.. and a strong stance on our goals in Afghanistan to reclaim the so called ‘independents’… a large number of which are just Republicans who refuse to wear their brand.

  35. lux says:

P.D #27.. ya, the stimulus was always intended to kick into high gear throughout this year. For political reasons? Definitely. The turn around should only accelerate – I’ve listened to the economists.. and they have always underestimated the recovery.. with every forecast – and that trend is likely to continue. The joblessness though is a questionable problem.. foreign workers are still cheaper – no one has a real way of fixing that.. If only there were a simple solution.

The question is though.. even with an even more profound economic turn around.. will Republicans care? They haven’t seemed to be that receptive over the fact that every economic indicator has been on an upswing.. I’m sure even with more dramatic results – they’ll just have their fingers in their ears…with their blinders on (in other words.. watching FOX).

Let’s remember how the Republican Party of (any state) really works. Voters register as R or D or something else. Each county has a D or R Executive Committee which is supposed to advance party politics in the county. The county chief executives (and maybe others) for the state party executive committee.

Along comes a Lindsey Graham (or John McCain or Win Rockefeller or others) who does not toe the party line, but keeps getting elected because the voters like him (or her) and the party dare not object.

Then there appears on the horizon from the bowels of the earth a group of extremists who scare the party executive committees to yellow their shorts. These gutless wonders then vote a sanction against their popular elected official who can ignore them because they no longer represent his (or her) true constituency. Should they try to unseat the incumbent they get a Lieberman.

As an Independent I like Lindsey Graham and expect him to help in the process of crafting a health reform bill that will pass the Senate despite his public comments to the contrary.
