Crist flip flops — and flips again — on his support for the federal stimulus.

In recent weeks, Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) has been flip flopping on whether he supported the federal stimulus bill. First he said he did, then he said he didn’t, and today he again said it was “pretty clear” that he did:

“It’s getting harder every day and we know that it’s important that we pass this stimulus package. It is important that we do so to help education, to help our infrastructure, and to help health care for those who need it the most — the most vulnerable among us.” — Crist, 2/10/09

VERSUS

Well, I didn’t endorse it [the stimulus]. I — you know, I didn’t even have a vote on the darned thing.” — Crist, 11/4/09

VERSUS

I support it [the stimulus]. I think it was important to take it. All of my fellow governors did so. … I would have voted for a different form. But I think it’s pretty clear I supported the concept.” — Crist, 11/12/09

Crist is locked in a tough Senate campaign against fervent anti-Obama, anti-stimulus right-wing candidate Marco Rubio and is getting attacked by conservative groups for his hypocrisy.

Update In April, Crist told Rolling Stone's Tim Dickinson that he "absolutely" would have voted for the stimulus:
ROLLING STONE: Just a final question: Had you been in the Senate, would you have voted with the other Republicans for the stimulus package?

CRIST: Absolutely.

Charlie’s answer will of course, depend on who he’s talking to and what they want to hear.
What part of (R) don’t you understand.

  2. P.D. says:

Crist is making a huge mistake. Rubio will crush him as a liar AND a flipflopper. Remember how Deeds ran away from Obama, he got crushed. And Corzine, who embraced Obama barely lost. All Rubio needs to do, is show footage of Crist with Obama, and it’s all over. Crist should bite the bullet, and come clean. It’s his only choice.

Charlie Crist has a rabid far-right opponent in the R primary next summer, and a couple of wishy-washy D possibilities to run against for Senate, should he make it through the primary. He’s been a half-decent governor… not obnoxiously wingnut and fairly evenhanded with the actual job. This would be a gorgeous test case for whatever decent R’s are left… get this guy to be outspokenly moderate and middle-of-the road instead of wh*ring after the central and north Florida troglodytes (we used to call them the porkchoppers).

I honestly think there are enough sensible people out there for something like reason to prevail… or at least I’d like to see a test of this (and know where we really stand, God help us). But no, ol’ Charlie is gonna try to out-Marco Marco Rubio, and Rush himself couldn’t do that, so here we go again.

On the other hand, Marco’s chances with the porkchoppers aren’t as great as he might think…

It will not help Crist to appear to flip-flop. He needs to take a strong stand and say the state had a severe fiscal crisis and that the stimulus helped save some jobs for his state. People will listen to a person who is forthright in his statements. He can layout what sort of cuts would have been imposed if Florida did not get the funds from the stimulus. Second, Crist needs to say that Rubio’s ideas are wrong and would be disasterous and why they are wrong. It will be very easy to paint Rubio as a radical with bad ideas.

And why is this giving you a woody? Do you only get your rocks off when somebody is getting beaten up?

If the Alavi Foundation has been engaging in illegal activities, they should be investigated, prosecuted, and their assets seized if necessary — according to due process of the law. But only a sick person would get a thrill from this, just as it would take a really twisted person to find joy in shooting a rabid dog.

There is no evidence that this constitutes “backlash”. There is nothing in the news item that suggests the Alavi Foundation had anything to do with the Fort Hood shootings, and nothing to suggest that the government wouldn’t have taken this action against the Alavi Foundation anyway.

Dems could be easily tempted to vote for Crist since he did a good job as governor. If the Dem candidates fails to inspire voters at the primaries or there is only one candidate, Dems may easily cross over. Crist will be better off painting Rubio as the teabagger that he is-a radical right winger who puts his political views over the needs of the state.

Hoffman thought he had a cakewalk in New York when Scozzafava dropped out. He reasoned that the district hadn’t voted Dem in over a century and therefor he would win. The teabagger got a surprise. There are going to be a lot of teabagger candidates and some may even win an office. But they will fail as a legislator because their political views are more important than the constituents. After one term the teabaggers will be gone. A few election losses and their appetite for demonstrations and tea parties will be gone.

  58. PursueTruth says:

The Moderate Squad@55 Re: Reagan being “a complete spendaholic buffoon”

Repeat this instead: Wasn’t Reagan’s spending a plan to end the cold war? Worked OK, no? Now, Bush Sr and the rest of our 90’s elected official’s job was to reign in the spending and the Osama’s once the Berlin wall fell. But instead we praise Clinton’s “surplus” when the federal debt never declined. Perhaps curbing a few evil hating madrassah’s during the 90’s might have been a good idea? Might even be a good idea now?

  59. PursueTruth says:

Could we stop allowing others to mislead us by measuring our debt as a percentage of GDP? Where I come from, (pre sub-prime NINJA loans & bailouts) debts are normally paid from income. Federal taxes are the income that’s supposed to pay our federal debt, not GDP. In addition, taxes paid are also a real number where GDP seems a tad more fabricated.

  60. flight says:

    PursueTruth,
You’re in thin ice territory. Cheney once remarked that if deficit spending worked for Regan, Bush should push the limits.
Regan was repeatedly advised that the Soviet Union was an economic basket case and they couldn’t sustain their military spending. Regan ignored the advice, ran up a huge deficits by expanded the military, and the advice concerning the Soviet economy proved correct.
The Clinton years were the best of the last 30 considering the fact that the country was at almost full employment, tax revenues where high and the country as a whole was making out.
Concerning GW Bush, I’ll play a Republican and won’t bother.

  61. BrianFL says:

Scozzafava versus Hoffman was just the beginning of the Republican-TeaBag Civil War. Charlie Crist versus Marco Rubio is going to be 100 times uglier. Unlike Doug Hoffman in NY, Rubio already has a base of support here in Florida. He’s also a much better speaker and more charismatic than Hoffman (though the same could be said for a slug). Rubio is far right on every position, so will be the Tea-bagger’s darling. Crist will have the establishment Republicans (McCain, Newt, George Will, etc.), and Rubio will have Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, etc.

    Grab your popcorn…

  62. flight says:

    PursueTruth@ 59,
Enough said, could agree with you more. We are stuck with reality, might as well own up to if. The truth is hard but at least you know how you are sitting!

  63. flight says:

    BrianFL @ 61,
I am afraid Crist may very well be on his own. It appears Linbaugh and Beck have spoken. Crist will have no support from the national party, he’s not pure enough.

  69. Mr. Sonia Herecomestheangst says:

Maybe Crist only paid for the head tan and there was some head shrinkage. Because his hand is a pearly shade of white.

  70. pags2 says:

Assume that Rubio wins the nomination. Can he win the election? Rubio has to convince all of the Republicans to vote for him, but there will be bad blood over the primary if Crist loses. My guess is that there will be a lot of regular Republicans who may cross over to the Dem candidate in the election. That will be enough for the Dem to win. In Illinois, we had a Larouchie who won the Dem nomination for a high office. But the Dems crossed over to the Independent Dem or the Republicans. The Larouchie lost by a landslide. I expect most of the teabagger candidates will lose because they do not appeal to the independent voters who are far more rational. As I previously said, there will be teabaggers who may win an election, but they will be unable to hold the seat. Crist needs to appeal to the middle of the road voters and that will be enough to deprive Rubio of the nomination. But Crist and his people will need to do a lot of work to get out the vote in the primary. A low voter turnout will increase the odds of an upset.

  71. Angellight says:

There is a reason why the GOP always say Government is the problem. They know that when you have a party of men and women in power, like themselves, who do Nothing for Main Street but say no and complain, who stimie reform, and incite fear into the people, then goverment becomes a problem — and so it becomes a self-fulliling prophecy. We must remember and think back that whenever the GOP are in power or in control, the goverment has been a do nothing, problematic government for Average Americans and a big Boom and Bonus for the Rich and well connected. Let’s not forget that this is a Bush & GOP stimulated recession due to the neglect and taking care of America. They had the power for 10 to 12 years, mostly since Regan, and did nothing to uplift this country, only to rape it and steal it from Main Street, to give it to Wall Street and businesses over seas. The GOP does not even like to raise the Minimum Wage for average Americans so that they can at least make a “living wage”! There were no homeless people until Regan rule when they got rid of all of the state hospitals and threw the insane out on the street to fend for themselves! They care nothing if you are making it. People we must wake up now! Because look around, assess the United States’ situation that we are in and ask yourself over the last 10 years of GOP rule, what have they done for you lately? Or this country? Do you like what the United States has become? And ask yourself this, if we let them get power again, how much more further will this country be destroyed until the United States will no longer be. That is a very frightening thought! So why in the world, would one vote for candidates and put them in power of a government in which they don’t belive in and believe cannot work? Why?
