President Obama will not accept any of the options given to him by Gen. Stanley McChrystal on the future of U.S. involvement in the Afghanistan war. Obama “believes the U.S. needs to make clear to the Afghan government that America’s commitment to the country isn’t open ended,” an official said in a statement.
Karl W. Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador in Kabul, has sent two cables to Washington in the past week expressing his opposition to a troop surge in Afghanistan. Eikenberry instead favors a focus on improving governance and anti-corruption measures in the country.
A new CNN/Opinion Research Corp. poll has found that 56 percent of Americans oppose sending more troops to Afghanistan and just 40 percent support the war there, where as 58 percent oppose the conflict.
A repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” will “likely be included as part of next year’s Department of Defense authorization bill in both chambers of Congress,” according to Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA). Congress would vote on the legislation next spring, and it will go into effect Oct. 1, 2010.
In a speech at Southern Methodist University today, President Bush will initiate his new public policy institute “as a forum for study and advocacy in four main areas: education, global health, human freedom and economic growth.” Bush “will announce the appointment of the first five of two dozen scholars to be affiliated” with the George W. Bush Institute. Laura Bush will also give a speech.
Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley “may be about to market their expertise to private-sector clients,” TPMmuckraker reports. The RiceHadley Group LLC was registered as a business in California in September and is said to be a “strategic consulting” firm.
NPR reports that, in the spring of last year, officials from Walter Reed Army Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences held a series of meetings and conversations to express concerns about Maj. Nidal M. Hasan. These officials “wondered aloud” whether Hasan might be “capable of committing fratricide.”
Speaking at a philanthropic event in New York City yesterday, billionaire Bill Gates said he believes that Wall Street compensation is often too high. “The compensation problem is a very interesting problem. I do think compensation is often too high, but it’s a very tough problem to solve,” said Gates.
The Obama administration is considering using unspent TARP bailout funds to pay down the debt. “The Treasury Department said about $210 billion in TARP funds remains unspent, including about $70 billion returned from financial institutions. A further $50 billion is expected to be repaid in the next 12 to 18 months.”
And finally: Helen Thomas for president in 2012?

Hannity claimed the Sept. 12th video footage used in reporting on the November 5th Teabagger protest was used mistakenly.
Of course it was a mistake to use deceptive means to make the puny Teabaggers Rally look bigger than it was. It was also a mistake to do it in such a lame, easily debunked fashion. And yet there are people out there who will accept that lame excuse as valid, and keep believing Clusterfox’s lies.

Good.
Now, if McCain would just STFU, perhaps the adults can get something done.

November 12th, 2009 at 9:07 amI’m a little torn here. I would like to see us out of there all together, but it appears as though the government is at odds with the military regarding our goals over there. I guess I would like to see a strict set of stated goals, and a plan to achieve those goals. If we can’t do that, we should just get out.

Looks like America is begining to enter the 21st century. It’s good to know that, slowly but surely, all Americans are being given equal rights.
Now, watch some right-whiner complain that DADT should be up to the states to vote on, or some other such nonsense.

November 12th, 2009 at 9:13 amBut if my memory servers me well wasn’t all this kinda during the time when Walter Reed was pretty F-ed up with crappy command and the shape of the hospital was appalling. So i can see this failing to get much attention.
Please get rid of don’t ask, don’t tell. Let’s extend equal rights to all of the military.

November 12th, 2009 at 9:18 amMcChrystal did an end round and went to the press instead of the Commander and Chief. That is unpresedented. The Generals listen to the PRESIDENT, not the other way around. The Repugs and Military know that. But in their quest to continue this bloody war and to make the President look weak. Even the polls show Americans want to get the Hell out of there.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:18 amTwo things…
Hannity and Fox are lying again. Having been a videotape editor it is an impossibility, for a professional, to “confuse” video from two different dates.

Do the right thing, Mr. President. While it’s logistically impossible (and colossally irresponsible with regards to our international commitments) to immediately withdraw from Afghanistan, get a timeline in place. Even the tactic of sending tens of thousands of additional troops doesn’t seem illogical, so long as the strategy is restricted to training and mobilizing the Afghan army and national police. Set a timetable, do that, and we can come home without our mission having been a complete failure. The war was effectively lost in 2002. We came to Afghanistan to accomplish three things: capture or kill Osama bin Laden (fail), depose the Taliban (succeed), and shut down the muhajedin training camps (succeed). It was never our intention to create a solid, stable democracy; we just happened to be dragged into a civil war that had been going on for 21 years. It will continue for long after we leave. Whether or not the Taliban regains control of Kabul is irrelevant; don’t expect a return to the late 1990s.
It seems like October 2010 is a long time to wait to reverse a policy that has done extensive harm to the military. Patrick Murphy (in the House) and Kirsten Gillibrand (in the Senate) should probably continue the push for legislation; still, if they fail…DADT will be reversed come Oct.2010. And may anyone who votes against reversing the policy be subject to the wrath of the electorate in November for harming our troops.
I’m really hoping Hasan DOES get a fair military trial. He’s already been declared a terrorist by the media and would never get a fair trial in a civilian court. He committed an act of terrorism (as did Cho Seung-Hui, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, Jiverly Wong, et.al.). Sane or not, ideologically motivated or not…intentionally inflicting grevious harm and death upon an unsuspecting populace for the point of terrorizing them is terrorism. Above all else, may he be tried without prejudice and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in a military prison, where he can reflect on the damage he’s caused and get the help he needs..
Bill Gates has always been a stand up guy. Proof that the problem isn’t a person gaining an inordinate amount of wealth; it’s what a person does with that wealth. His foundation has contributed $28b to various charities across the glove.
Using unspent TARP money to pay down the debt is a step in the right direction. Now, reinstate the top tax rate to 39% and begin taxing derivatives trading and corporations who ship a certain percentage of their jobs overseas…and our economy should be back on track.
I like Helen Thomas. She’s tough, persistent, and I agree with her views. Unfortunatly, I wouldn’t be comfortable voting for a candidate who would be 92 on election day…

No wonder the chickenhawks hate Obama… doesn’t he know that neverending war is bad for business?

but that would’ve interfered with the money-makin’ schemes…
November 12th, 2009 at 9:23 amoops, that should have read “STOPPING a neverending war is bad for business”
November 12th, 2009 at 9:24 amNo matter what Bush does, no matter what freaking Institute he creates, NOTHING will change his image of a war monger. The blood of thousands are on he and Cheney’s hands. Bush is one of the most reviled Ex-Presidents in History. Historians will not be kind.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:25 amAnd to the envitable troll comment that “Obama needs to listen to the generals, like bush did!” Remember General Shinsecki. He said before the Iraq war started that we’d need at least 320,000 troops on the ground to pacify Iraq. He was ridiculed and fired. And bush wound up with 150,000 troops, and 180,000 “contractors” in Iraq, and the place still wasn’t pacified.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:27 amCarrie Prejean does a terrific impersonation of both Tom Tancredo and Sarah Palin at the same time on Larry King.
Hey, if you don’t like the “tough questions”, darlin’, you shouldn’t have become a Miss America contestant.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:29 amBob@18, Yeah, Bush had no problems throwing Shinsecki under the bus, did he? Even Powell told Rummy and the Pres. Bush, “You break it, you buy it.” Repugs and trolls have a very big problem with short term memory loss.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:32 amP.D. I agree — McChrystal was insubordinate in doing his little end run around the president and going directly to the press. He made life that much more difficult for Obama — recall that Obama summoned him to Air Force One shortly thereafter for a private talk.
Powell has said Obama should take more time.
Ret. Gen. Eikenbarry – amb. to Afghanistan – is telling Obama to told up on sending more troops, as is Joe Biden, foreign policy expert.
The warmongers (profiteers) are pressing for a quick decision to satisfy their own agenda – I am please that Obama is demanding more information, and a more long-term strategy.

Oh, in Helen’s case I’d make an exception. Think about this for a second. At the age of 92, she probably wouldn’t be obsessed with re-election or keeping her large donors placated. Furthermore, at that age, she’d probably sense that her time was limited and would be less likely to drag her feet to get stuff done.
Even if we only had her in charge for a year, imagine what a straight-talking, no nonsense, incredibly smart person who can cut through the BS could accomplish. It would be worth it. But I’d make sure she had a veep I could live with.

Idiots like Lou Dobbs do the same thing, & I’m confident he’ll land with the FoxSuckers soon.

Even Fox doesn’t lie as well as Congress; they’re the experts!

Heh, heh. I’m a C student, an’ I got to be President. So one of the first thing I did as President was to pass “No Child Left Behind” which punishes schools if their childs are C students. Or worser.
GLOBAL HEALTH
heh. That’s a good one. Like the globe is sick. heh. It’s got a tem-per-tur. That’s what Al Gore is runnin’ around sayin’ with all his “global warmin’” malarkey. The ice meltin’ at the poles is just God’s way of sayin’ He wants us to drill in ANWAR.
HUMAN FREEDOM
I’ve done more to bring about human freedom than any President. I rid the world of Saddam Hussein. I bought democracy to the Iraqi peoples. I bought democracy to the Afghanistanians. They used to hate us fer our freedoms, but now they have the same freedoms as we do. So now they hate themselves.
ECONOMIC GROWTH
heh…heh…he… Hey, look, the rich got richer by far thanks to my economic policies. That’s economic growth. My base is the haves, and the have mores. And now they have more and more. Cuttin’ taxes fer the rich was jus’ the beginnin’. You all notice at the very end of my administration, we were throwin’ money at them by the billions! That’s economic growth! heh…heh.

November 12th, 2009 at 9:38 amFamily values at work:
Mo. cops hunt for child abuse clues hidden in jars
Some excerpts:
LEXINGTON, Mo. – An excavation was scheduled to resume Thursday at a rural western Missouri property where authorities believe they may find bodies and buried glass jars with notes written by children who may have documented sexual abuse.
The five family members are charged with several felonies, including forcible sodomy, rape with a child younger than 12 and use of a child in a sexual performance. The allegations, which include bestiality, forcing children into fake marriages with relatives and making an 11-year-old have an abortion, date from 1988 to 1995.
Three of the five men are lay ministers in the Community of Christ church whose licenses have been suspended, church spokeswoman Linda L. Booth said.
Deborah Burris, who has lived across the street from Burrell Mohler Sr. for several years, described the suspect as a friendly, helpful neighbor. Burris said she occasionally saw Burrell Mohler Sr. walking around the neighborhood but he had appeared frail lately.
The Community of Christ, headquartered in Independence, split from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1860 and was known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints until 2001. It has about 250,000 members worldwide.

I agree! Helen Thomas would have the whole “Screw all y’all’s, I’m doing it this way, and if you don’t like it, tough!” attitude. Sort of like how Fmr. Pres. Bush governed, except she’d have a working brain to use, rational reasons for her policies, and she wouldn’t whore herself out to the right-whiners and draft dodging ultra-rich and other anti-American special interest groups like ‘Dubya did.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:39 amLOL! If Carrie Prejean is the Repugs new pin up girl, they are doomed. Her behavior on Larry King was a disgrace. She acted like a spoiled child. Larry should have thrown the bit*h of the set. Some role model!

November 12th, 2009 at 9:43 amWhilst Hannity’s calculated fabrication of the trucknutz convention is getting attention, Bachmann also lied and exaggerated the turnout.
She said 25,000 to 40,000 showed up.
The 60 free buses provided by Dick Armey could have delivered no more than 2,400.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:43 amThe park police estimated 4,000, not 40,000.

November 12th, 2009 at 9:44 amThese wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have been an utter disaster for this nation, as well as the poor invaded countries themselves.
If the Bushies had wanted Bin Laden so much, why didn’t they just take a fraction of the needlessly wasted trillions and offer it as a bounty for Bin Laden and Al-Zawahiri?
Never stop reminding the teabaggers and the repiggies of their complete silence during the spending orgy for these wars.
What’s a trillion for the health care of our own citizens in contrast?
Just what have these stupid wars accomplished, apart from the further enrichment of the Bushes, the Cheneys and the military corporate fatcats?
Why do we pay taxes to support this crap?
November 12th, 2009 at 9:45 amWow. If Miss Prissy thinks Larry King (Mr. Softball) was giving her a hard time, then I believe that’s the last we’ll see of her on TV (thankfully). Larry’s a puppy dog compared to other interviewers (especially with a pretty girl in front of him).

Because we’re a “Christian Nation” waging a “Holy Crusade” against “Muslim Infidels”. According to the newly revised teachings of Christ, it is blessed to spend money to kill innocent children, women, and men, but a sin to spend money for abortions.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:00 amDon’t forget Elizabeth Hasselbeck in your calendar!
Carrie Prejean should replace Monica Crowley on McLaughlin Group.
Her “diddle tape” is automatically bisexual, since it can appeal to either team. So Carrie can be considered bisexual.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:01 amHow surreal is all this. Just a couple of days ago WSJ and other media sources all but pinned down Obama on 30,000+ new troops. Now it’s all back up in the air.
Reading the mainstream media to figure out what is really going on over there is an exercise in futility. Almost all the really important stuff takes place behind the curtain. American foreign policy is a perpetual reproduction of the Wizard of Oz. Only the names of the Wizards really change.

4)Counter criticism with fear-mongering and finger-pointing
5)Ask yourself “where do I want my right-wing welfare sinecure to be in five years time” and make that highly paid job for which , pointless though it is, you are still unqualified for—and make that your primary goal.
6) Don’t sweat the small stuff (like torture, facts, or the effect of your decisions/fantasies on people you don’t know, like average Americans or entire foreign nations.
You’re welcome!

the front pages of the NY Times between 9-11 and “Mission Accomplished”,
everything ever written by Mark Halperin
every Washington Post editorial,
every Bill Kristol column,
and even after asking Bush/Rice/Rumsfeld/Cheney/Bolton/Bremer/Yoo and Rove if they’d ever made any mistakes or had any regrets,
they just haven’t found anything ‘actionable’ yet.
Of course having WH e-mails to look at would help, and it’s just a damn shame and nobody’s fault that Rove’s pudgy fingers accidentally brushed the delete key several million times.

November 12th, 2009 at 10:31 amIt’s not so much that a teenager behaved foolishly, t’s the hyporcisy of it all — in conservative homes, hypocrisy starts early. Like all good christian girls get boob jobs too.

President Obama knows the right thing to do is get out now. Hopefully, he will follow the will of the people on this issue especially and get our soldiers out. I, for one, am happy to see that the Dems can play hardball too.

November 12th, 2009 at 10:39 amScary prospect for the Progressive!
Was Republicans being down by six points a “scary prospect for the Teabagger”?
P.S. People vote for individual members of Congress, not a “generic ballot”. I thought I’d let you know in case Hannity was too busy shrieking about the secret Obamanazi Death Squads to fill you in on that fact.

Parse that!
November 12th, 2009 at 10:45 amstorm, you want to pretend that those boys were aquitted in a fair trial, go ahead. We knew you were a nazi.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:46 amstorm, instead of disparaging a great war hero like Murtha you should be explaining why your hero’s, rummy and wolfowitz and other chickenhawks failed so miserably.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:52 am74 – Stormie, dear…you keep forgetting the very essential and much larger fact that NO Americans would have died in Iraq if your hero, the Chimperor and his dark Mage Cheney hadn’t sent them there for fun and profit.
Until then, STFU. K?

November 12th, 2009 at 10:54 amThe Obama administration is considering using unspent TARP bailout funds to pay down the debt
Use money you haven’t spent to pay down debt you owe. What a concept! Or how about a refund and we could all pay down some debt. That’ll only cover 2 or 3 wall street bonuses, so whatever you do, don’t do that.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:01 amMcChrystal’s troop increase request is missing two key words: EXIT STRATEGY.
While polls show the public wanting Obama to listen to his General’s they are also saying no more troops for Afghanistan. Apparently the public wants Obama to hold fast on current troop levels but to let the General’s decide how to best use those troops. That seems like what is happening today, but with little success. The public has not been polled on how important it is to have an exit strategy and I have to wonder why.
What ever happened to the Biden plan? A compromise was once floated that was McChrystal in the large population areas and Biden in the countryside. While that sounded overly simplistic it seemed to make more sense than the plans on the table to increase troops anywhere from 20,000 to 40,000, especially since all of these plans are incomplete since they lack an exit strategy.
At a high level, this should not be rocket science. What is the goal. Is that goal achievable. How might it be achieved. What resources are required, both civilian and military. What are the chances for success. How might those chances for success be improved. When and how will we know our level of success. How do we transition to Afghanistan control. How and when do we exit. Why have we not measured these items before. This war effort has been mismanaged from the beginning. Think not, why was bin Laden allowed to escape when cornered at Tora Bora.

Of course they will. That’s the whole point of government. 1) Screw up as much stuff as possible so that you can say that government cannot function.
2) Make yourself available, for a large fee, to discuss how you can unscrew the things you screwed in 1 above.
Oh, and 3). Make as much money both in and out of government.

November 12th, 2009 at 11:37 amPresident Obama will not accept any of the options given to him by Gen. Stanley McChrystal on the future of U.S. involvement in the Afghanistan war. Obama “believes the U.S. needs to make clear to the Afghan government that America’s commitment to the country isn’t open ended,” an official said in a statement.
Get your butt out of Afghanistan right now. Or become another LBJ.

November 12th, 2009 at 3:02 pmByron Dorgan’s Financial Plan: Common Sense From The Senator Who Saw This Coming
He got it right last time.
Senator Byron Dorgan, Democrat of North Dakota, was one of eight senators who stood up to oppose the repeal of the Glass-Steagall act in 1999. That repeal, which was signed into law by President Clinton exactly 10 years ago today, broke down the barriers between commercial banking and investment banking, and led to the growth of behemoth financial firms that were able to take enormous risks with impunity, because they were “too big to fail.”
“I think we will in 10 years’ time look back and say we should not have done this,” Dorgan said back then. The video of his speech has become something of a cult favorite for wonks — ten years, a $700 billion bailout and a major financial crisis later.
Washington has an odd habit of listening to the people who consistently get such things wrong, and ignoring the ones who get them right.
So today, on this solemn anniversary, how about listening to this guy? What does he think we should do now?
