Napolitano on Sheriff Arpaio: ‘He was unwilling to accept there were standards that needed to be met.’

One of the more controversial steps the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has recently taken is the revision and standardization of its 287(g) immigration-enforcement agreements with state and local police as part of DHS’ efforts to prioritize the removal of dangerous undocumented immigrants. Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio made national headlines last month when he belligerently stated that DHS had unfairly singled him out and took away his authority to make a political example out of him. DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano sat down with ThinkProgress today to explain what drove DHS’ decision to limit some of Arpaio’s authority amidst rampant allegations of racial profiling against the Sheriff’s Office:

It was time to build some standards into 287(g) and to put some organization into this. … And he [Arpaio] was unwilling to accept that there were standards that needed to be met. He wanted to go off on his own. And so that’s where we had a parting of ways.

Watch it:

During an event at the Center for American Progress today, Napolitano openly opposed Arpaio’s blind immigration raids, stating that she doesn’t believe that they are the best way to ensure public safety. The event featured Napolitano’s first detailed discussion on comprehensive immigration reform and what DHS is doing to prepare for it. Napolitano announced that there’s a desperate need for immigration reform that consists of a “commitment to serious and effective enforcement, improved legal flows for families and workers, and a firm but fair way to deal with those who are already here.” Though significant improvements have been made, “the laws themselves need to be reformed,” she said. Arpaio is a fascist. His approach to law enforcement is basically Italy circa 1930: arrest and intimidate all who oppose him.

    2. Kenneth,

Big talk from someone who whiiiiiiines about the deficit. You want to lock up all illegal immigrants? Let it come out of your pocket. Raise taxes on everyone to pay for the cost of imprisoning 13 million ostensibly non-violent offenders.

And then you can whiiiiiiiine some more about how we have such a huge budget deficit.

Lock ‘em up! What part of ILLEGAL don’t we understand?

    You mean the employers correct?

  5. LibertyLover says:

Arpaio is a true rogue and he is out of control. Voters keep voting him BECAUSE of his immigration raids. Sadly, there are people that think AZ is overrun with undocumented workers.

Problem is, Arpaio only goes after the people trying to make a living NOT the people that hire the undocumented workers. If the jobs dry up for undocumented workers, then people will quit coming across the border for jobs.

    Excellent question!….for:
    torture
    extraordinary rendition
    wiretapping without a warrant
imprisonment without habeus corpus or trial
    outing a CIA agent
laws, such as marriage, which limit religious freedom

What part of ILLEGAL don’t we understand?

  7. Bobwurst says:

Keneth doesn’t understand that it’s not illegal to have brown skin…at least not yet.

  8. majii says:

I’m sure that undocumented hispanics commit the majority of crimes when the two largest groups in prison are Caucasians and African Americans ( or so say some republicans/conservatives.)

  9. dbadass says:

So is it safe to assume you have no problem with illegal employment my little vote down baby? Come on speak up…

Would you feel better if we gave all immigrants amnesty? Then they wouldn’t be illegal. Your problem would be solved.

And congratulations for following every single law to the letter.

  11. tom says:

Napolitano has Arpaio pegged but she is being all too kind. While she was governor of Arizona, she had a first-hand look at this vindictive, bigoted cowboy.

Joe would rather conduct random green-card checks, dress his inmates in pink underwear and build more tent-cities on prison grounds than deal with law enforcement and solving crime cases.

Phoenix has one of the highest rates of unclosed, unsolved crimes in the nation. Joe fiddles; Phoenix burns.

Hopefully the voters out here elect Saban, but it can’t come soon enough. Maricopa County Sheriff’s office needs different leadership.

Combine this story with the story, previously today, where Kristol wants to execute Hasan on the spot.

Could someone explain to me what is wrong with DUE PROCESS ?

I know it is inconvenient. But why do the conservatives want to do away with it ? Especially as the current president is a CommunoFascistLiberalStalinistKenyan who is running a ganster organization ?

Why is there smoke rising from Sec. Napolitano’s lap in that video? Did someone in your offices set her on fire? Please don’t do that – we need her, okay?

I find it very difficult to extend credibility to anyone who only references their own references in their blog. Every single one of your links link right back to something you yourself have posted about.

If you want to have any credibility, then you need to link to the facts and not to your own opinions about said facts, if they even exist in your blog. (I certainly can’t find any)

immigrationdotcom’s fears are based here in an excerpt from his rantings:

Every illegal alien who stays in the U.S. is a potential Democratic voter

It reaveals that immigration is not the worry, more democrats are the real danger he speaks of.

If we enforce the laws, many companies would be in violation.

Arpaio is a thug who neocons love and everyone else should fear. A officer of the law respects the chain of command and the laws that are set forth. They do not run their department like a paramilitary force.

  32. Brittanicus says:

The politicians are irreversible committed now to the E-Verify system of verifying legal workers. Sen. Harry Reid and his cronies may have–ONLY–authorized it for only 3 years, but they will have all hell to pay, if the originally tried to kill it.. They have managed to soften 287 G, the arrest and detain mechanism, given to regular police to fight illegal immigration. The same situation is in slowing ICE from expanding their duties, by executing lightening raids on suspicious businesses that are using large amounts of foreign labor. But right now the feds are building on E-Verify with great success, no matter what the open border opponents say? Another key component of Illegal immigration enforcement is knowing when tourists leave the country? Plans are being finalized to implement a data base of eye and fingerprint scans, when a person leaves the airport for departure.

I am sure with this coupled with entry customs inspection the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be able to detect visa over-stays? Along with further cultivation of E-Verify the US will have a much strengthened prevention against illegal immigrants. Very soon the mainstream of the American population will be confronted with this new Comprehension Immigration Reform. This should not be left for either the Democratic leadership or the minority Republicans to decide? We can no longer trust either party, to carry out the wishes of all of us. My thought would be a national referendum, but even though we are a Democracy we are over and over again–cheated by our legislators, who are in deep collusion with business organizations and the open-border entities? Those of us, who have a high respect for what citizenship means, should blast–ALL–Senators and Representatives and call 202-224-3121.

JETTISON SENATOR HARRY REID (D-NV) IN 2010 WITH A “NO AMNESTY” MESSAGE? ALL POLITICIANS NEED TO BE WARNED, THAT IF THEY VOTE FOR THE 20 TO 30 MILLION ILLEGAL ALIENS, THEY TO CAN BE EJECTED FROM OFFICE?

TELL THEM THEY MIGHT FORCE THROUGH ANOTHER BLANKET AMNESTY? BUT HAVE THEY EVEN CONSIDERED THAT MILLIONS WORLDWIDE HAVE ALREADY BEEN ALERTED TO A NEW PATH TO CITIZENSHIP? ALL THESE ALIENS HAVE TO DO IS CLIMB THE UNDERMANNED BORDER FENCE AND WAIT FOR THE NEW ACT TO PASS?

Have our lawmakers had any comprehension of the dire predicament of not only the government welfare programs? Have they any conceivable idea of low income job loss to the American worker? Have Politicians even taken into consideration what is expected of the middle class taxpayers? Are Lawmakers not disturbed with OVERPOPULATION by 2050, according to the Census Bureau that will bring upon us all serious shortage of drinking water, energy and oil? Now learn about the corruption at state and federal level from JUDICIAL WATCH. Then read NUMBERSUSA to see the immigration enforcement gradings of our politicians, and then take back you vote. Finally see details of the forthcoming overpopulation at CAPSWEB. Only the American people should decide the future of America? Not the special interest lobbyists, not the open border groups, nor the legislators who have completely ignored–THE PEOPLE’S–wishes for far too long? The Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) can be identified with an underground agenda of pushing politicians, to the free flow of cheap labor nationwide. Se the absolute chaos by uncontrolled legal and illegal immigration in England and the rest of Europe. GOOGLE–the foreign press?

  40. EugeneDebs says:

    Popatop

Stupid really. Not that I ever expected anything from you that goes beyond your base stupidity. The Mexican border is almost 2000 miles long the Canadian border is more than 5500 miles long. Exactly how many troops do you think we need for those borders? My GOD you are stupid
