Hoffman ‘Un-Concedes’ The NY-23 Election After Prodding From His ‘Mentor’ Glenn Beck

Doug Hoffman On Nov. 3, Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman conceded the special election in New York’s 23rd district after finding out that he was losing considerably to Democrat Bill Owens, who has already been sworn in and cast an important vote for health care reform. However, “a standard process of correcting human errors in election night spreadsheets” has narrowed Owens’ lead over Hoffman from more than 5,000 votes to about 3,000, and the New York Board of Elections is counting around 10,000 absentee ballots.

A Hoffman win is still a longshot, but on Glenn Beck’s radio show today, he said he was feeling hopeful. He even told Beck that he was un-conceding the race:

BECK: Alright, so let me ask you two questions. Are you currently bowing to me at the waist? (LAUGHTER) Have you bowed, or will you bow, to anyone, at the waist? No? Okay, good. Second question for you, are you officially un-conceding at this moment?

HOFFMAN: Yes, if I knew this information at the election night, I would not have conceded.

BECK: So are you un-conceding?

HOFFMAN: If that’s possible, yes.

BECK: If the President can bow to an emperor and nobody says anything, yeah, I think you can unconcede.

Listen here:

If anyone could get Hoffman to unconcede the race, it would be Beck, whom Hoffman has called his “mentor.” Hoffman has signed a pledge to uphold Beck’s 9/12 Project principles in Congress and lurched to the right to curry favor with the right-wing host.

Pfftttt! Next act in the game of political theater please. This one sucks.

  3. EnnuiDivine says:

Someone needs to inform Mr. Hoffman that he can’t un-concede an election. If he had that much of a hard-on for the seat, he should’ve waited a few days and called for a recount.

Owens has been sworn in and he’ll remain there until at least 2011 (quite a bit longer if the GOP is intent on running the schmuck who tried to unconcede an election)

  4. margarine says:

I love how we’re to the point where we count how many handshakes someone has made to make some sort of statement. Japanese people bow all the time as it is… I don’t recall anyone getting all huffy if someone bowed to some European monarch. It’s kind of just the etiquette.

They essentially want Obama to be some sort of Western hero. I hope this country is finished electing cowboy presidents, honestly. Respect no one, shoot first and never ask questions.

Ignoring Beck in general, this guy conceded. Sorry buddy!

If the President can bow to an emperor…

Uh, that’s quite the (il)logical leap, Beck.

What does Pres Obama’s bow have to do with this election at all?

Beck: Always looking for an excuse to say stupid things.

  12. Purple State says:

BECK: If the President can bow to an emperor and nobody says anything, yeah, I think you can unconcede.

If an idiot falls at Fox News, does it make a sound at the White House? ‘Cause there was a hell of a lot of squawking about this one, pal.

If I ever meet Beck? I will not shake his hand, bow to him…nothing. I will just stand there, cross my arms nice and slow, and give him a death-stare.

  13. Wiz says:

If there are only 10,000 votes to count and he is 3,000 votes behind he would have to get like 70% of the 10,000.

  14. rmwarnick says:

You can only un-concede if you’re not afraid of looking like a jerk. A settled question with regard to Hoffman.

  15. Hoodathunk says:

I hope the people of NY23 are paying attention. The guy they had a chance of electing to represent them is taking legal advice from a rodeo clown.

  16. Mathazar says:

TP, I believe that 10,000 figure is incorrect.

That number is the amount of absentee ballots that were applied for, not the number returned.

And Hoffman would need at least a 2 to 1 advantage from those
ballots to come close. Not gonna happen.

This is getting more ridiculous all the time. there’s an AP story on the web, and just to give an idea of the BS that’s going on, I thought I’d enclose the whole thing – try not to throw up

WASHINGTON (AFP) – News photos of President Barack Obama bowing to Japan’s emperor have incensed critics here, who said the US leader should stand tall when representing America overseas.

Obama on Monday was in China, having wrapped up the Japan leg of his Asia trip two days earlier. But Washington’s punditocracy was still weighing whether or not the US president had disgraced his country two days earlier by having taken a deep bow at the waist while meeting Japan’s Emperor Akihito.

Political talk shows have played and replayed the moment from the second day of Obama’s week-long Asia tour, which set the blogosphere on fire and chat show tongues wagging.

“I don’t know why President Obama thought that was appropriate. Maybe he thought it would play well in Japan. But it’s not appropriate for an American president to bow to a foreign one,” said conservative pundit William Kristol speaking on the Fox News Sunday program, adding that the gesture bespoke a United States that has become weak and overly-deferential under Obama.

Another conservative voice, Bill Bennett, said on CNN’s “State of the Union” program: “It’s ugly. I don’t want to see it.”

“We don’t defer to emperors. We don’t defer to kings or emperors. The president of the United States — this coupled with so many apologies from the United States — is just another thing,” said Bennett.

Some conservative critics juxtaposed the image of Obama with one of former US vice president Dick Cheney, who greeted the emperor in 2007 with a firm handshake but no bow.

“I’ll bet if you look at pictures of world leaders over 20 years meeting the emperor in Japan, they don’t bow,” Kristol said.

Some said the gesture was particularly grating coming after Obama’s bow to Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah at a G20 meeting in April.

The US president’s Asia trip comes just over a year after he won election to the White House, and is designed to shore up US power in a region increasingly dominated by rising giant China.

But back home, Obama’s bow in Japan seems to have grabbed much of the attention being paid to the trip.

The gesture appears to have touched a particularly raw nerve among Obama critics who said the president has hastened America’s decline as a world superpower by being too apologetic and too deferential in his dealings with other world leaders.

While most of the commentary about the bow in Japan was decidedly negative, some political observers, like longtime Democratic activist Donna Brazile, came to the president’s defense.

“I think it’s a gesture of kindness,” she told CNN, adding that the bow appeared intended to show “goodwill between two nations that respect each other.”

Meanwhile, an unnamed, senior Obama administration official told the Politico.com news site that the president had simply been observing protocol.

“I think that those who try to politicize those things are just way, way, way off base,” the official told Politico.

“I don’t think anybody who was in Japan — who saw his speech and the reaction to it, certainly those who witnessed his bilateral meetings there — would say anything other than that he enhanced both the position and the status of the US, relative to Japan,” Politico wrote.

“It was a good, positive visit at an important time, because there’s a lot going on in Japan.”

Ha-rumph (and other serious throat-clearing noises). A bow to bumkiss is recommended when the (host) is standing on his head, or laid face down on his desk. And everyone knows that proper form is to pivot through the hips rather than at the waist. Attempts to bow at the waist by political novices bumkissing a DJ have been known to not only cause lower back muscle strain, but to result in one or more herniated discs.

Aw hell, go ahead and bow at the waist, Hoffman.

Ooo, bowed at the waist. Add that to your list of impeachment charges then stick it back where you pulled it from.

  54. 5th Estate says:

Alejandro says: Did Hoffman promise to end the wars if he were elected?

Said Mr. Bush in 2000: “I would be very careful about using our troops as nation-builders.”

BUSH: “The arrogance, inconsistency, and unreliability of the [Clinton] administration’s diplomacy have undermined American alliances, alienated friends, and emboldened our adversaries.”

BUSH: “The current administration has casually sent American armed forces on dozens of missions without clear goals, realizable objectives, favorable rules of engagement, or defined exit strategies.”

BUSH: “I think the president ought to get on the phone with the OPEC cartel and say: ‘We expect you to open your spigots’ …The president of the United States must jawbone OPEC members to lower the price.”

The nation lost more that two million manufacturing jobs, and few have been restored since the recession officially ended in November 2001. The nation has added 1.5 million jobs since last August, but it still has 1.2 million fewer than when Mr. Bush took office. The median family income, after adjusting for inflation, was about $1,535 lower in 2003 than in 2000.

You see Alejandro, there’s this thing called the internet, and Google, and they’ve been around since like 1995, and what they do see, is they let you find things that people said or did, or said they did but didn’t, or said they didn’t but actually did, and stuff like that see?

Let the Reichwhiners rave about what they don’y understand. It seems to work pretty well.

President Obama, as a man of the world of wide experience, is very well aware of the social, political, religious, and diplomatic significance of bowing. This is particularly true of Eastern cultures.

Short version? It is appropriate for heads of state to exchange bows, as representatives of their people, to show mutual respect and honor.

BECK: If the President can bow to an emperor and nobody says anything, yeah, I think you can unconcede.

So this shows how really stupid & ignorant Beck is. Nobody says anything? Many a hate-filled, racist, idiot right-wing pundit has done nothing but “say everything” about Obama’s bow. That’s why they look so stupid, hate-filled, & racist. So Beck joins the others who think Bush’ kissing & holding hands with emperors/dictators/republicans (heads of republics) is simply fine & dandy. Beck & Hoffman both show themselves, once again, to be dishonest dolts.

Hmm– maybe “unconcede” can be in the running for next year’s word of the year?

  71. Keith says:

Hoffman always appears to be such a doofus—I don’t see how he got as many votes as he did.

1)Gore actually got 550,000 more votes than W.
2)Exit polls (accurate to within 0.2% before 2000) said Gore won Florida by 300,000.
3)W’s brother and co-chair Katherine kicked 70,000 African-Americans off the rolls. 95% of them should not have been kicked off.
4)Software engineer Clint Curtis said he made the software for Republican Tom Feeney to flip the votes in 2000.
