Pawlenty Completes Science-Denying Metamorphosis, Now Refutes That Human Activity Causes Climate Change

Speaking to the Economist recently, Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN) told reporters that he questions the science underpinning climate change. Pawlenty explained that while the earth might be warming, it is unclear “to what extent that is the result of natural causes.” As ThinkProgress has noted, Pawlenty has veered sharply to the right to appease a right-wing, tea party base. Although the tea party movement demands strict adherence to far right positions, as a Democracy Corps study shows, much of the movement sees political issues through a prism that is simply divorced from reality.

In appeasing the tea party base, Pawlenty not only dismisses the stark reality that human-caused carbon emissions are the largest contributor to climate change, but he also sacrifices his own credibility. Over the course of the last three years, Pawlenty has gone from an outspoken proponent of clean energy to a Glenn Beck pandering climate change denier:

Dec. 2006: Pawlenty lays out an ambitious clean energy program for Minnesotans to reduce their use of fossil fuels 15 percent by 2015. Cutting greenhouse gases, Pawlenty said, would “be good for the environment, good for rural economies, good for national security and good for consumers.” He also calls for a regional cap and trade program.

May 2007: Pawlenty signs the Next Generation Energy Act of 2007, requiring the state to reduce its emissions 15 percent by 2015 and 80 percent in 2050. At the signing ceremony, Pawlenty said Minnesota was “kicking-starting the future” by “tackling greenhouse gas emissions.”

Oct. 2007: Pawlenty declares that the climate change issue is “one of the most important of our time.” He also brushes off “some flak” from right-wingers who doubt climate change science.

Sept. 2008: During the election, Pawlenty backs away from his own cap and trade program, says such a system would “wreck the economy.” He then tells hate radio personality Glenn Beck (a climate change denier) that human activity only contributes “half a percent” to climate change.

Nov. 2009: Pawlenty backs away from acknowledging that any human activity is the cause of climate change.

Although Pawlenty has already earned a “Full Flop” from PolitiFact because of his cap and trade policy reversals, he deserves another for his politically motivated denials of science.

These Repugs are idiots. The ‘Tea-baggers’ are destroying the Party. Just today the “Neo-Nazis’ were trying to join them, the leaders are fighting among themselves. If Pawenty wants to court these people, he will lose.

This seals the deal: Pawlenty is running for the GOP nomination. It’s all fringe nuts in the primaries, so he has to go off the rails to appeal to them…

This is more proof that some republicans/conservatives don’t care about anything except holding the reins of power. the majority of them are cowards, afraid to take a stand and do what’s right for fear of losing an election. This is an extreme form of self preservation and selfishness.

This study is astounding. I am struck by the two major conclusions:

    1. That the hardcore conservatives have a skewed vision of the political world and because of that they are extremely paranoid.

    2. They have a distorted view of their numbers, so much so, that they believe they are the majority.

The study comments support the notion that Palin, Fox and the conservative talk radio use these views to reinforce the paranoia. The worst scenario for these people would be the loss of a lot of elections in 2010 with hardcore candidates. That would challenge their belief that they are the majority.
Republicans believe they can control this block of voters, but I think not because they are so far out there. Election losses in 2010 might bring them back to reality.

  15. Deschanel says:

We need to stop asking politicians about climate change. It’s derailed the conversation from the cause of climate change.

“How do you feel about POLLUTION, Mr. Pawlenty?”

Pollution- fouling our seas and skies and land- is an undeniable truth that climate change deniers can’t deny. It’s killing the environmental movement to concentrate so heavily on climate change. How about the incredible megatons of toxic filth we’re spewing ino the skies and oceans? Ask them to defend that first.

  16. Ape-Man says:

Ya, ya, Pawlenty is now tap dancing on the snake oil wagon – ooh! – get some cotton candy and belly up. there’s a sucker born every minute and Pawlenty is there to recruit them all.

Same as all the Republicans – politics is just a front for their criminal enterprise. Really.

    hmmm…not quite, majil.

If Pawlenty rationally cared about holding on to his job, he would have stayed moderate. MN is a weird state for elections but he should know that the Teabaggers don;t have any popular momentum–they exaggerate their numbers and get inordinate media attention, and FOX promotes them, but nationally they are a minority of a minority,

Pawlenty stands to lose his less crazy original supporters as he courts the Teabaggers.

Pawlenty is playing fast and loose with his words which will come back to haunt him in the primaries in 2012. The Republicans are running to the right with the expectation that they will gain a lot of seats in 2010. By 2012 Pawlenty, et al, will be running back to the center because they know they cannot win a national election without independent voters. The problem will be that Pawlenty’s words show so many flip flops that the other candidates will jump on his inconsistency.

I commented “So the Democrats aren’t so bad after all” –to which she respond, “ah yes, but, we still had to pay taxes on the new truck”.

Well I also chatted with her husband Mike as well.

“You know this global warming thing, it’s all made-up.” said Mike.

“Well mike, you know how many oil based plastic bags we go through in this building, and you know how expensive oil is, and you know how there’s a fluorescent bulb in my kitchen because it’s more efficient and that saves you money because you have to provide it by law? ”

    “Yes, yes…”says Mike

“Well even if global warming is ‘made-up’ don’t you think it’s a good idea to be more energy efficient and less polluting anyway?”

“Well yes, I suppose…” said Mike, “but that Al Gore he’s making millions off this fake invention of global warming, and it’s just an excuse to create jobs,, that’s what it is!”

Saw this on Hullabaloo, Timmy is now being referred to as a
    SLOB HUNTER.

It seems last weekend timmy shot and wounded a deer, but rather than stay and track down the suffering deer, he had to
rush off to a fundraiser in Iowa.

Way to lose the hunter vote Timmy.

  112. Ape-Man says:

  114. Perry logan says:

Kind of scary that this creepy minority may cost us the planet. Verily, conservatism is the root of all evil.

    One-Termer

  115. EdgeOnIt says:

IMO, to refuse a set a facts, is NOT NECESSARILY, INCONSISTENT with reality! The social system provides for a diversity of views, by seeking to identify just a ‘few’ lies, once in a while:

    1) Social Positions, DO NOT fall back, on a set of untruths!

    2) Residents, within the vicinity of a social role model, rely upon, and depend upon a factual basis, during each, every, and all current and future interactions with these leaders.

    3) Dialogues between role models, more often than not, are publicly conducted debates, and can be ‘interactive’ with those near-by observers!!

  120. FVNY says:

Let’s see, the planet may be warming slightly, although it hasn’t been conclusively proven nor is it known how much humans contribute to that miniscule warming.

    What shall we do?

Oooh, I know, lets tax everyone in the name of environmentalism.

    Sincerley,
    The Radical Left

  121. mwoman says:

How embarrassing. This is all that our democracy can produce? Guys like Pawlenty? Where are the noble thinkers of Antiquity? And what are they thinking now? They must be cringing at what reaches their ears. Screeching, like fingernails dragged along chalkboards. OUCH!
