TMZ reports that Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) recently suggested that former beauty pageant contestant Carrie Prejean would be a serious contender for public office:
[Carrie] has the ability to draw crowds and if she has a strong message to go with that, who knows what she can do? She has star power which can open doors.
We’ve all made mistakes when we were 17. [The sex tape] is going to be an impediment, but people are excited about her convictions and her beliefs.
Prejean, who believes gay couples do not deserve the right to marry, has been dogged recently by accounts of her appearances in various “sex tapes” and photos. The conservative National Organization for Marriage has apparently removed Prejean from its website, after previously touting her as “the future of our movement, and the future of America.” Chaffetz did not elaborate on what he considers to be Prejean’s “strong message.”

Eh? Maybe? I think Paris may have a little more class in the airhead brigade than Carrie. Paris doesn’t seem to have any particular fear of mockery or sarcasm and is capable of self-mockery, in fact. Add to that the fact that she understands that she, in her public image, is a brand, the fact she’s at least third or fourth generation ‘moneyed’, and that she doesn’t seem to be a bigot; with all that, it looks like Carrie is just jumped-up trailer trash while Paris may be a regular human being. It’s all grist for the entertainment mill though.

OTOH, I’d be happy to leave the leadership to the President and the respective Governors if we could just elect Congresscritters who would legislate for their citizen constituents rather than suck around on the lobbyist’s dole. Yes, sometimes they do need to show a little leadership, but mostly they need to quit pandering to corporatists and one-note interest groups.
