Speaking to reporters last night, the Senate’s top obstructionist, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), said that he would attempt to slow down progress on health care reform by insisting that the 1,000-page-plus health care reform bill be read aloud on the Senate floor. “The American people are going to get to hear this bill read, period,” said Coburn, adding that “he would also block other legislative shortcuts” in an effort to delay the bill, such as requiring “the Senate to use up the entire 30-hour debate period called for after a filibuster has been broken.” According to Roll Call, “earlier this month, Republican leadership aides said Coburn was unlikely to make such a move without the blessing of GOP leaders.”
LOL>>> I say get that speed readied they had before and let him rip right threw this bill.
And lets see if Tom can read along with the rest of the wacko`s
November 17th, 2009 at 5:12 pmOK. Then hire that speed reader to do it, and force ALL members be present while it’s read. I got no problem with that.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:12 pmPilot, sorry. You got here before me.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:13 pmGo ahead on, buttwipe. Read on, read on.
What’s happened to Coburn’s block of the veterans and VA bills. Is he going to have to have an enema to get some movement there?
November 17th, 2009 at 5:14 pmCoburns’ colonge smells like vinegar and water.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:16 pmgo ahead coburn as long as you, personally read the entire thing from start to finish without a food or restroom break.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:16 pm@1. Pilotshark …
Excellent. Get a whole team of speedreaders in there. And yes, make the entire Republipimp caucus be present for the entire reading.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:17 pmP.D. says:
Pilot, sorry. You got here before me.
NP
it seems the VDT has you pegged.
poor dumb azz troll
November 17th, 2009 at 5:17 pmSome clown is lutking in the shadows votin us down again. Where was he/she the last thread? I guess even a troll couldn’t defend Mukasey remarks.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:18 pmBring it Sen. Coburn.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:19 pmKnock yourself out, Coburn.
Just don’t think you’re going to be leaving the floor of the Senate until that sucker is read 100%.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:19 pmIf he does it i will listen
Someone should do it and i’d like to thank this Republican jerk for volunteering.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:20 pmToo bad the VDT doesn’t have more friends, it might actually have some effect. *yawn*
November 17th, 2009 at 5:20 pmThe dems have stated that if the republicans try this, they’ll keep them there 24 hrs, including weekends, and that if any of them leave, the reading stops, and the dems will proceed without them. The republicans don’t like having their weekends co-opted. I remember that they didn’t want to work over coming up to the August recess or Veterans Day.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:20 pmFine. Let him read it. That will slow down the legislation, not stop it. So it takes another week to get it passed. I’m OK with that. It also sets a precedent. If ever the GOP ever gains control of the House or Senate again, the dems can require that they read every piece of legislation they ever put forth. Considering the thousands of bills that go before congress every year, it will completely bring the GOP to a halt.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:22 pmJohn Moschitta, Jr. could do it. Wonder what his rates are?
November 17th, 2009 at 5:22 pmI hope he has a lot of Red Bull and coffee and plans on sitting around the entire reading of it. Heck, the clerks reading the bill out loud will rotate out, but Colburn can’t and must be there for the entire reading. I wonder if he is going to be able to do it.
I’ve heard some Dem’s taunting the rep’s to try a real filibuster and not just threaten it. They said that they would keep the congress in session until the Rep’s get up even if it means a week of twenty-four hour sessions.
If they do, then it should be quite the show. Either way, the Repug’s will loose.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:23 pmIt’s time for the Dems to play hardball. The Repugs are less popular than the Clap. They are Obstructionists. If we can’t get Health Care done now, we will never get it done.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:24 pmFine. Schedule the reading for Thanksgiving day. Most of America will be home and can tune in if they are so inclined (as if Coburn cares that the people get to hear the bill read). And, no, don’t hire a speed reader. Read it slowly and carefully – especially that part that has been misconstrued to be about “death panels” (maybe read that twice, in fact). Then break the filibuster and schedule the 30 hour debate for Black Friday and Saturday – 15 hours each day. And have a camera focused on Coburn seat to see if he hangs around for the whole show he wants put on.

AUDIT THE FED
Oh look, another Nazi authority figure.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:29 pmTom Coburn can read?!?!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:30 pmIn the amount of time that it takes him to read it, more than a few people will die due to the fact that they are uninsured.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:31 pmWhy anyone would deny their fellow citizens healthcare I will never understand. I really hate the repugs.I do enjoy watching them become more irrelevent everyday though.
Majii is Right. Sen. Harkin has vowed to Keep the Senate in session 24/7 and make the Republicans actually Filibuster…not just threaten to filibuster.
But…as I understand it… Bills are to be read by the Clerk of the Senate…or in this case Clerks … who will rotate the task.
All live on c-span 2 :/
November 17th, 2009 at 5:32 pmAnd if the filibuster isn’t done by the end of the weekend after Thanksgiving, schedule the 30 hour debate for Christmas and New Year’s – I’d suggest 10 hours on Christmas day and 20 straight hours starting New Year’s Eve at 8:00 pm. Wait, find some time for Hannuka as well – just to tick off Lieberman.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:32 pmCoburn vows to read the entire health care bill on the Senate floor.
– - G’head, Tom, and afterward you’ll need to go straight to your doctor.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:32 pmI hope to God the Dems will play hardball with this obstructionist moron.
I’ve heard that the Dems plan to read the bill without a break – so there had better damn well be an R in the chamber 24/7 until it’s done — or that will be the end of this particular bit of obstructionist BS.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:32 pmFred says:
AUDIT THE FED
Oh look, another Nazi authority figure.
Just another simple minded know nothing pond scum sucking Coward.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:33 pmWhen the Republicans controlled everything, whatever obstruction tactics the Democrats employed came nowhere near the magnitude of what we are seeing today. You could say that’s because Democrats are boneless wimps, but it might also be because they saw it wasn’t a politically wise thing to do. Much better to work in a bipartisan manner, so when re-election rolls around, one has a brag sheet that shows some productivity.
However, now that the GOP is obstructing blatantly (and they don’t care that their brag sheets show nothing but obstruction), I assume the Dems are taking notes — so when (and if) the Republicans ever regain the majority, the Democrats will be able to do the same thing to them.
Of course, this means we ultimately get into a “my party can obstruct better than your party” contest, which will cause all action in both houses of Congress to eventually grind to a halt, no matter who’s in power. This could happen in less than a generation. Bipartisanship is already dead, so we’re halfway there.
Unfortunately, the Republicans don’t see the long-term effects of their actions. They only have their immediate goal — bring down the POTUS and the Democrats, and they don’t care who, what, or how much they destroy to achieve their objective.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:34 pmGo for it cockburn.
They’ll carry you out on a strecher.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:34 pmsscncturn64 says:
Good point. Perhaps we can have one of our progressive Senators get a “people dying from lack of healthcare” counter and clock to display during the reading and debate that Coburn craves.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:34 pmI won’t envy the Senate chambers janitorial staff if this happens! Both audible and physical crap coming out at all times is not what I call a holiday bonus.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:36 pmHave at it Tommy boy…We out here in the REAL world think you are a dribbling moron but the guys and gals over at the “C” street house will miss you when you’re gone.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:37 pmDipsh** will probably try and read 1 page a day to postpone letting the bill get pasted.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:38 pmThe GOP are a threat to America and the Constitution and should be put on a short leash.
Wanna know what’s wrong with our health care system?
Just take a close look at dr cobern and dr frist.
greed drives medicine in America and these freaks don’t want that changed.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:40 pmI got a VDT for my suggestion that debate be held on the Holidays. Good. I want trolls (both blogging and legislating ones) to be inconvenienced and insulted. The rest of us have had to put up with a boat load of both from them. Shovel it back into their houses.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:41 pmI shopped for months until I found a Democratic doctor.
People called me crazy. Some doctors were offended. Best thing I’ve ever done for my family.

Dipsh** will probably try and read 1 page a day to postpone letting the bill get pasted.
Well i think once they start to read it they have to go all the way threw and finish it. Or until the repugs get bored having to sit in there chairs, Hell haft of them dont even know were they sit i bet. will need a lobbyist to usher them to there seats.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:43 pmI love the smell of repiggie desperation in the morning!

Mr. 卐 Duke 卐
You could read it now if you weren’t such a ditze
November 17th, 2009 at 5:47 pmThis is where Harry Reid has to do his job. He’s got to scour all the arcane and little used Senate procedural rules (remember he did it once before to everyone’s surprise) to find ways to blow these delay tactics out of the water. And now is when we progressives and liberals need to stand behind him – both to push and to support him.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:47 pmIf it’s read, it will be the first time the repugs read the bill. LOSERS!
November 17th, 2009 at 5:47 pmDick Durbin has said that if Coburn tries this, the Dems. will make sure that the Repugs are present for it. If they leave, he will call a vote to end the reading and move to debate.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:47 pmI better lay in a large supply of popcorn. This is gonna be good.

LOL so true,,,, you can almost hear him crying to his handlers faster i need to keep up.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pmYou guys are the best. So feisty!
My first thought was, “Good! At least then he’ll have actually read it.” But if a clerk reads it does that mean that Coburn wouldn’t even have to be present?
A split screen would be good, the clerk reading it on one side and Coburn trying to stay awake, or his empty chair, whichever the case may be, on the other side.
But PLC is right, there should be a counter running on the bottom of the screen with the estimated number of people who died during the reading due to not having health care coverage.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:54 pmI can’t figure out if duke is trying to be Kim Yong Nam or Duke the racist.

November 17th, 2009 at 6:01 pmWhy are these GOP ass*oles allowed to do absolutely anything, no matter how stupid, no matter how inane & ignorant, no matter how anti-American, to obstruct improvements to the American public? Why? Can’t this sort of garbage be tossed out? Can’t the system actually work “for the people”, instead of “for the stupid, partisan, moronic politicians”? Coburn is an idiot, a loser, an anti-American reject. Send him elsewhere. Put him in theatre in New York, with lots of gay performers. He’d be more at home. He’s a drama queen.

This makes me so proud that Durbin is my senator. My senators are committed to the public option along with my congressperson, Jan Schakowsky. They are a bright spot in Illinois politics. I believe Reid and the Dems are going to crack the whip on the fence sitters. Lieberman may find himself alone and out on a limb for the health care bill.

You made me realize that this is a bit of a risky move by the Repugs. I mean if FAUX viewers actually tuned in to this reading they might actually realize that they’ve been lied to about its contents! Nah – they don’t have that much ability to comprehend or pay attention.
November 17th, 2009 at 7:03 pmCommunism, Marxism, American Democracy, Voltaire’s Pangloss, Plato, the whole idea of a Utopia; all have the same roots and failings.
The basic premise is that people are rational and, with the benefits of modern civilization, will be collectively wise and govern themselves. Alas, all systems are subject to control by most anyone who can put butts in the seats. The fact is that, individually, people are irrational, avaricious, power-driven, and often insane.
November 17th, 2009 at 7:08 pmpete its true
Snakeoil salesmen get to rule. It is why I keep saying I couldnt care less about the capitalism, socialism arguments. Lets keep our eye on the GOAL of a just society. Lets spend less time arguing about HOW we get there and deifying the vehicle thought best to get there and try to get there. No question if humanity is going to survive another millenium it will take a massive raising of awareness of the public all over the globe.
November 17th, 2009 at 7:12 pmThe Republicans run the risk of a backlash if people perceive them as the reason for political gridlock. The health care bill tactics will emphasize their obstruction tactics. That is what happened when they forced the government to shut down under Clinton. The tactic backfired and public opinion forced them to end the shutdown.

November 17th, 2009 at 10:23 pmRead it. Parliamentary proceedures, OK. My family has waited for 3 generations for this. What’s a few more days of fat old white guys blowing more hot air? It’s going to happen.

Its about time ignorant brainwashed morons like YOU stopped letting rightwing screechmonkeys do your thinking for you
November 18th, 2009 at 9:36 ampete I like to think it is between conciousness and unconciousness. So many people go through life half dead. They dont WANT to think for themselves they dont care about what goes on right next to them. They look for easy soundbites instead of actual wisdom. They look to feed their emotional responses instead of their integrating their intellect with their hearts. They live half a life. Unless they wake up. Whatever their path unless enough of them wake up and look reality right in its often ugly face we are doomed
November 18th, 2009 at 9:40 amI say “GO FOR IT” let him read the bill on the floor.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:15 amthis reminds me of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Maybe it should be read. It violates to 10th amendment of our constitution. Read my blog about dealing with the healthcare bill that I wrote in September. http://nategarrett.blogspot.com/2009/09/you-lie-scandal.html
November 18th, 2009 at 4:49 pmRumDUMB
You are very stupid if you think the healthcare bill violates the constitution in ANY way. I know that is what Rush told you to think but it is undeniably and astonishingly ignorant. Article 1 gives Congress the RIGHT to levy taxes to provide for the general wellfare. So your take is just plain ignorant
November 19th, 2009 at 2:48 amThe endlessly, changing nature of human interactions, may encourage alacrity, in voting for permanent, health care legislation! The highly valued, and unique talents, and skills, of doctors could soon be rapidly utilized to assess pre-existing conditions; in addition, a crisp new approach, may maximize health care related taxation outcomes, and also, likely assist in our economic recovery!!
