SPLC president tells Bill O’Reilly to pay up $10,000 Dobbs bet.

Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) President J. Richard Cohen appeared on Bill O’Reilly’s show this past summer and called on CNN to fire Lou Dobbs over his inaccurate immigration reporting. O’Reilly advised Cohen to stop wasting his time. O’Reilly was so sure Dobbs would never be fired from CNN that he seemed willing to bet Cohen $10,000:

O’REILLY: CNN is never going to fire him, you know that…

COHEN: I’m not quite as cynical as you are Bill. I think that if enough people speak out, CNN will listen and be more responsible in the future.

O’REILLY: You wanna bet?…I’ve got ten grand for Habitat for Humanity on the table if you wanna bet me.

COHEN: How about ten grand for the Southern Poverty Law Center?

O’REILLY: But I’m not going to take your money. There’s no real bet there — he’s not going to get fired.

Watch it:

In an open letter addressed to O’Reilly that was posted yesterday, Cohen states “You lost the bet. Time to pay up!” Granted, O’Reilly’s commitment to the bet was tepid, at best — but Cohen points out that “in the court of public opinion, you lose.” In an interview with Dobbs on his show last night, O’Reilly suggested that Dobbs’ departure had nothing to do with responsible journalism, and more to do with CNN not wanting to offend the President. O’Reilly also urged Dobbs to “come back on a semi-regular basis.”

    Ha!!!

What will he do? I love this jerk being on defense.

  2. Purple State says:

Yeah, no real bet, so it’s not really news, guys. O’Reilly, as expected, is half-hearted about his comments.

But what are the odds on, say, O’Reilly getting fired?

My guess is 150-to-1. He retires before he gets canned.

  3. EnnuiDivine says:

Of COURSE O’Reilly won’t pay. There’s no way to prove that Dobbs was fired for incompetant, bigoted, xenophobic, and factually devoid journalism…or that he was fired at all. CNN won’t cop to actually canning his ass.

  4. Badmoodman says:

O’REILLY: CNN is never going to fire him, you know that…

    – - And the bet will never get paid because, not to parse words, Dobbs resigned but wasn’t fired.

  5. COProgressive says:

O’lielly is going to pay up as much as Insanity was waterboarded.

Don’t hold your breath. The cluster Faux on cable are all talk and no action.

    Mark Koldys *Hearts* Keith says:
“Was Dobbs fired or did the fat, lying, tub resign?”

I don’t think that if you quit your former employer just gives you 8 million dollars Mark

  7. zxbe says:

If Bill doesn’t care about the constitution, he’s certainly not going to care about this bet.

The day O’reilly pays up is the day the Sun rises in the West……..

  9. pastcaring says:

Asking O’Reilly to pay up is like asking him to man up…a no-win proposition

  10. LeslieBurton says:

I think it’s safe to say he was forced out. I really appreciate the work this organization does.

  11. Zimzone says:

    O’Reilly can waterboard Insannity & we’ll call it even…

Agreed. O’Reilly will weasel out of the bet. It would kill him to have to cough up for an organization that he considers liberal.

  13. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Yeah, I’m sure that’s going to happen…..we are still waiting for some apologies that he was supposed to issue a few years back aren’t we?

  14. missmolly says:

O’Reilly will never pay up — just as he never admits he says anything wrong, either. He’ll claim that Dobbs wasn’t fired, he resigned — or he’ll claim he never made such a bet (even when footage exists that says otherwise).

And this won’t really make a difference to anyone. His audience thinks he’s a god, and they’re not likely to change. Everybody else already knows he’s a welcher, a cheat, and a liar. And they’re not likely to change, either.

Billo and his idiot fans will just say being paid to quit and being fired aren’t the same thing.

  17. EugeneDebs says:

    Mr Duke

Arent you tired of being so stupid and brainwashed? Arent you tired of being frightened and hypnotized by the Clenis that haunts your dreams? Ok we get it. YOU are pathetic you dont have to keep shovelling the idiocy you have been brainwashed with.

    Did O’Reilly lose the bet?

    Yes or No.

  19. noseeum says:

What are you talking about, Mr. Dupe?

  20. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

Mr. Duke, Ohio just had a vote on whether or not to allow casinos to be built and operate here. I would consider that “public opinion being involved in gambling”.

Now, setting your nonsense aside, do you think Mr. O’Reilly 1) made a bet and 2) lost the bet and 3) should pay up?

  21. Chuck Feney says:

    Bill,
Be a real mensch. Split the difference: send $5k to SPLC and $5k to Habitat to Humanity. Everybody’s a winner.

  22. P.D. says:

Oh, come on Billo! Pay up. Sure, I don’t know if Dobbs was TECHNICALLY fired, but he’s out of CNN just the same. And what is $20,000 to you? The Poverty Center could use it. And you? You can save face a do the right thing. Or is that asking too much?

  23. Leftside Annie says:

Eh. Billo’s a big welsher and a p*ssy to boot. They all are.

    It’ll never happen.

  24. P.D. says:

OOps! I said $20,000 when it was actually $10,000. But seriously, what’s 20 or 30 grand to Billo?

  25. shoeless says:

I’ll bet $10,000 that O’Reilly welches on his bet. The money isn’t the issue. It’s that right wingnuts can’t admit when they are wrong (which is always), so he will ignore it.

  27. The Moderate Squad says:

O’Reilly will pay up just as soon as Sean Hannity gets the waterboarding he promised.

  28. Jusus says:

Dobbs will now make a mint by scaring old conservative white people it’s a shame, and really it’s class warfare, Dobbs and republicans spend billions brainwashing the uneducated for political gain. You would be amazed at the number of people who believe them
The rally cry for the uneducated is we want our country back, well my question is where was it when Bush had it. If it can be taken in less than a year, it wasn’t kept very well by the last people that had it.

  29. SoapBox says:

    PAY UP you welcher!

  30. Wiz says:

ORielly will say Dobbs was not actually fired, that he quit. I wouldn’t be surprised if Dobbs will be doing commercials selling insurance to seniors by the end of next year.

  31. EugeneDebs says:

The whole I want America back is the right collective WWWWWWWAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH I am going to kick and scream and throw a hissy fit till I get my way WWWWWAAAAAAAHHHHHH

Wrong question. Was a bet officially even made? That is the question. Anything in writing? A handshake? Give me either.

  33. jbrantow says:

Compare Keith Olberman to O’lielly. When Keith Olberman pledges thousands to a cause…he follows up….he’s honest and stands by his word. O’reilly (like cowardly hannity….the “I’ll be waterboarded for charity-chicken hawk) is greedy and selfish and will never live up to his word. There’s the true comparison. A brave man vs a weasel rethug.

  34. Christiansopposewar says:

First, Dobbs quit; and bravo to him. He doesn’t have to put up with the crap any more. They gave him 8 million out of the nine mil he would have made if he stayed. So now he is just doing his radio show and who knows what else might turn up. At least he doesn’t have to go to work and have to constantly think of whether he is contradicting what someone might want who pays his salary. I find the main problem here is peeps who think the know something, oh wait, they are in the progressive thinker class. Hah. Train is about out of gravy. I’m not a Dobbs fan, but at least he’s honest.
