Despite Sessions’ bluster, only 29 senators support Hamilton filibuster.

hamiltonOvercoming a failed filibuster attempt by Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL), the Senate voted 70-29 this evening to end debate on President Obama’s first nominee to the federal bench, clearing Judge David Hamilton’s path to become a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Ten Republicans broke with Sessions:

Lamar Alexander (R-TN)
Saxby Chambliss (R-GA)
John Cornyn (R-TX)
Orrin Hatch (R-UT)
Richard Lugar (R-IN)
John Thune (R-SD)
Judd Gregg (R-NH)
Olympia Snowe (R-ME)
Susan Collins (R-ME)
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)

Many of Sessions’ implausible attacks on Judge Hamilton appeared more at home on Glenn Beck’s show than they did on the Senate floor.  At one point, Sessions embraced false claims that Hamilton gave Muslims preferential treatment over Christians. Sessions also deemed Hamilton unfit for the bench because Hamilton spent one month working for ACORN in 1979. Yet, for all of his impotent rage against President Obama’s first nominee, Sessions couldn’t even convince much of his own caucus to support a filibuster. Hopefully, Sessions’ utter powerlessness against Hamilton’s nomination will embolden Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) to move forward with dozens of other Obama nominees currently being held up in the Senate.

About f#$@in time. Now it is time to start bringing all of the other nominees up for vote.

It is time for Hairy Reed to show some leadership and dare the minority party to filibuster.

One down and about 80 more appointees to go,the Re-pukes are politicizing nominees to make the Dems look weak in time for the 2010 elections hoping the Dems base will stay home just like in the past because they can`t carry any candidate against any Dems and the problem is we aren`t staying home in 2010 regardless.

  4. lux says:

yay. Looks like we have some RINO’s in the senate =) They aren’t sticking to the obstructionist game plan.

Looks like Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III still hasn’t gotten over being only the second nominee to the federal judiciary in 48 years whose nomination was killed by the Senate Judiciary Committee.

  8. tombaker says:

    it’s a failibuster.

  9. fixbone says:

i am shocked – oh well disgusted that 29 senators would still vote against the president’s nominee

You are correct. Sessions is determined to obstruct judicial candidates and it is time for the Republicans to rein him in. These senatorial holds on appointments are being abused and Sessions is the worst offender. He needs to get over the fact that he was rejected because even some Republicans voted to reject him.

How many people have been sent to jail over the last few years for “lying” to investigators? Now it’s time for freaks like Sessions to spend a few months in the slammer.

Thank God there never was “Judge Jeff Sessions” — although Scalia and Thomas are doing their part to fill his clown shoes on the federal bench

I think the Repugs realize they are not gaining ground with anyone. The only group that actively supports them are the ‘Tea-Bagger’ crowd. Their poll numbers are down in the toilet. And they are sensing it is not just an anti-Obama mood, but a anti-INCUMBANT mood. I think we should vote EVERYONE out. All of them.

  16. P.D. says:

Not another troll lurking again. It is so cowardly when they do this. Clicking down everyone. What a wimp.

  17. Jim Wolf359 says:

Hopefully this breaks the logjam on Obama’s Judicial Nominees. It is pathetic that the Rethugs are holding the Administration hostage to their petty bs. It’s even more pathetic that Harry Reid lets them do it.

I kinda like the invisible VD troll. Considering that there’s never been more than one I’m inclined to think that amorphous blob I call “stupid troll” is down to one, tiny, functioning appendage.

  30. fletc3her says:

The sad thing about the Senate is that the Democrats are allowing the mere threat of a filibuster to delay things for months and months. The Democrats need to call the Republican’s bluff on all the stalled nominations.
