Fox News displays old campaign footage to claim Palin is getting ‘huge crowds’ at her book signings. (Updated)

This afternoon, Fox News host Gregg Jarrett proudly announced that Sarah Palin is “continuing to draw huge crowds while she’s promoting her brand new book. Take a look at — these are some of the pictures just coming into us.” But the pictures that the network chose to display on-air appeared to be old file footage of Palin rallies from the 2008 presidential campaign. Individuals in the crowd are seen holding McCain/Palin signs, and others are holding pom-poms and cheering wildly. “There’s a crowd of folks,” an enthused Jarrett observed, referring to the old footage. Watch it:

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart recently caught Fox News’ Sean Hannity displaying crowd shots from a rally earlier this year to claim that a recent GOP health care protest drew a larger audience than it actually did. Hannity later acknowledged that he “screwed up.”

Update Crooks and Liars' John Amato writes that he is filing an FCC complaint against Fox News for its misleading segment.
Update Media Matters points out that one of the videos is from Nov. 1, 2008.
Update Fox News has acknowledged they made a “production error” and may take “serious disciplinary action” against those who in the control room who were responsible.

Fox Viewer: No, no, they just really liked those signs that’s all…There were 1.2 million people at the Palin book-signing I went to…really…

  3. radhika says:

At this point, I think Fox is having fun with it. They don’t give a hoot if they are caught faking it – their base doesn’t care. It’s probably extra fun for the team if they slip one by libruls now and then, though.

  4. har5125 says:

Fox “News” lies again, why am I not suprised again?

  5. lokidog says:

Like Palin, FOX simply doesn’t care about telling the truth, nor getting caught at it. I’m still surprised Hannity even acknowledged John Stewart’s piece. These people know the mindless minions that worship at their altar of bigotry, hatred and untruths also don’t care – as long as the left is being skewered, the facts are but an inconvenience to be ignored.

  6. RobertSeattle says:

It not Fox News – its the Fox SciFi Channel – it’s a whole different reality.

Ah, first out of the gate, it’s Rupert’s very own candidate, the Fox News Whore.

These guys better get their agit-prop chops in order or Rupert will have their lunch. Old footage? Year old footage or older? Damnit, can’t they get some homeless folks and retirees in there to the book signing????

  8. Underoath says:

Fox using propaganda story’s are so common now i don’t even read half of em.

  9. missmolly says:

At this point, I suspect Fox News is blatantly doing things like this because they know they’ll get exposure on The Daily Show. Or the Colbert Report. Or anywhere else that they’ve become comedic fodder.

Heck, they went to court to protect their right to lie. And now they’re just getting mileage out of it.

  10. Hoodathunk says:

For people who have a real problem with history, Faux is pretty good at hitting the archives when it suits them.

  11. Helga says:

Another inadvertent advertent mistake, no doubt that is what Hannity will say again. Wish all the cable shows would quit talking about her and giving her free ads for her book.

  12. raynman says:

Fox is pretty much aiming at the mindless 20 percenters who will believe anything the Holy Trinity of Limbaugh, Hannity and Beck spew forth (O’Reilly would be the 4th prong of the trinity since most of the 20 percenters can’t count anyway)

  13. Marie says:

Fox doesn’t care if their sham is exposed — by that time, today’s news is history, people will have forgotten, but the subliminal message that “Sarah Palin is really popular” will linger.

This is is not reporting, it is a)advertising for Palin’s book, b) political propaganda in its claims of Palin’s popularity and c) it is willful FRAUD!

The producer/director cued it knowing it was campaign footage, Garret reads the script. FRAUD!

Reason to pull FOX’s FCC licence.

  17. MapleStreet says:

Bad enough that they tried this again after getting caught on it just a week or so before (by a commedian, none the less).

Do we have a pattern established yet ????? And what does this say that they think of the sheeple ?

But this one doesn’t even look like a book signing. It looks like basketball arena seating.

And when are they gonna figure out the youtubes ?

  18. progresivo says:

Come on GOP, bring her on !! Palin 2012, that would be the most entertaining show in history, it would be so fun to watch, and since the GOP is not serious about politics then let’s make the 2012 reelection campaign at least fun to watch.

  19. Marie says:

Sarah is out there today touting how she will defend the constitution, but when the constitution doesn’t suit her, she is quick to dismiss it.
For instance, within the last day she was talking about ignoring civil rights, profiling people who are not WASPs.
She’s all for taking away a woman’s civil rights in removing her rights insofar as contraception and abortion — but that of course is AFTER she made her choice in her last pregnancy — but she will deny other women who choose differently.

Constitutionally, she is a moron. But her followers believe her inane utterances because they don’t think either.

  20. 5th Estate says:

missmolly: Heck, they went to court to protect their right to lie.

Dammit, that’s right. The court did rule that they could lie. Well done ‘teh court’(a**holes).

  21. Fritz says:

Getting awfully sick of hearing about Failin’ Palin…I wish the moron would just fall off the face of the earth.

  22. roxsteady says:

Pathetic! I was watching Nora O’Donnel on Hardball and she said that one guy in line to get his Palin book signed said that Palin was more qualified than all of the men who ran for president last year and that she’d protect the Constitution. More than the Constitutional Lawyer who actually won? This all white crowd is basically a bunch of inbreds, and fat slobs who would clearly benefit from healthcare and stupid teenaged girls who said Palin was a great role model for women? And teen pregnancy! Actually, I added the teen pregnancy because Bristol did!

  23. Doom Siren says:

Wow, the more desperate Fox gets, the more regularly they lie.

Pretty soon thier list of lies will outstrip the list of ones Palin tells in her book!

It’s about time they admitted it. The Fraud-casting News-ish Sycophants have been pure satire from the day they went on the air. That satire has only become more pronounced over the years.

They’ll never own up to it, though. If they did, they would have to stop complaining about Daily Show parodies of them and having the President stiff them for interviews.

Nope. “Inadvertent” would usually be restricted to isolated incidents. FAUX, on the other hand, has establish a regular pattern of using faked footage. 66. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    TTTC says: \

A new Pew poll completely smashes the narrative that far-left cretins have been pushing about Fox News. You constantly hear from the left that Fox News is a “right-wing propaganda outfit” and that only Republicans watch it. Clear thinking Americans have always known that to be nonsense, and a brand new Pew survey proves it.

Firwst of all, your premise is completely false. yes, we do say that Fox news Channel is a right wiong propaganda machine because that happens to be a fact. But I, for one, have never said that “only Republicans watch it.” Don’t know who fed you that line but it’s not true. We don’t say that.

Their annual survey of cable news audiences now shows:

    ?FNC: 39% Republican, 33% Democratic, 22% Independent
    ?CNN: 18% Republican, 51% Democratic, 23% Independent
    ?MSNBC: 18% Republican, 45% Democratic, 27% Independent

So when Fox News claims to be “Fair and Balanced” that apparently also extends to their audience. Does this mean that since it’s mostly Democrats who watch CNN and MSNBC that those channels are “left-wing propaganda outfits?”

Your conclusion is so far off the mark as to be laughable. Fox News Channel is neither fair nor “balanced”. They are a right-wing propaganda machine and are not in the least bit interested in the objective truth. And your other conclusion that the political affiliation of the audidence determines the political leanings of the content of those networks is just plain stupid reasoning.

A new Pew poll completely smashes the narrative that far-left cretins have been pushing about Fox News.

Could you provide a link for that poll?

    It’s actually right here: http://pewresearch.org/pubs/1395/partisanship-fox-news-and–other-cable-news-audiences

And you’ll note that while TTTC managed to quote the “data”, s/he also failed to quote the very next lines from the actual poll itself in regards as to how to interpret that data:

However, it should be noted that there are more Democrats than independents or Republicans in the general public. In the 2008 news consumption survey on which this analysis is based, 36% identified as Democrats, 29% as independents and 25% as Republicans.

TTTC also failed to report Pew’s other poll: Where you get your main source of news?

Pew Research updated the “main source” measure in the July 2009 news attitudes survey. Among those saying Fox News was their main source of news, 38% were Republican and just 18% were Democrats. Among those saying CNN was their main source of news, 46% were Democrats and just 13% Republicans. Once again, both differed from the balance of partisanship in the general public — the Fox News Channel’s audience was 16 points more Republican than the general public (38% vs. 22%), while CNN’s audience was 12 points more Democratic than the public (46% vs. 34%).

There’s a lot more I could point out to debunk TTTC’s interpretation of the first poll, but I’ll just let the second poll’s reflection on it stand on its own.

The rest of the poll interpretation was pretty interesting too.

  73. stormkite says:

    Thank you bluesunflower,

That’s funny actually, because one of the first things I thought after looking TTTC’s post with the poll numbers was that the numbers seemed to add up to a lot more democrats than republicans or independents in this country.

Also as Wayne A. Schneider mentioned the breakdown of the audience does not determine the impartiality of the show.

And there’s another way to look at these poll numbers. It appears to me that Democrats get their news from some diverse news sources, while it looks like nearly all republicans get their news from Fox alone.

Can I just say that Norah O’Donnell on MsNBC today was in Grand rapids and in her report, she said “thousands” were in line just before she said about 1500 people were in line… It would be more appropriate that she say “hundreds.”

And… it was very telling about the daughter of a man that was in line had on a T-shirt that said something to the effect of “We had a $$$ bailout and all I got was this lousy t-shirt. ” When NOD corrected her and told her that Palin was actually FOR the bailout but against the stimulus… the girl looked stunned. NOD, to her credit, asked her if that changed her opinion of Palin any… and the girl said “no.”
