Fox issues on-air apology for misleading footage of Palin crowds.

Following ThinkProgress’ report yesterday that Fox News had recycled old file footage of Sarah Palin rallies to assert that she is currently getting huge turnouts on her book tour, the network issued an on-air apology this afternoon. Fox’s Happening Now co-host Jane Skinner said it was mistake, but didn’t explain how it happened:

In the tease before the segment — the tease to commercial — we told you how those people were already lining up to meet Palin. The problem is, we didn’t actually show you the video we were referencing. Instead, we mistakenly aired what’s called file tape of Sarah Palin. We didn’t mean to mislead anybody in that tease. It was a mistake. And for that, we apologize.

Watch it:

The Swamp reported earlier that Fox News may take “serious disciplinary action” against control room staffers over the incident. The on-air apology made no reference to such action.

And by “serious disciplinary actions”, they mean “promotions”.

I’m throwing the BS flag on this, I’ve seen FUX get caught like 4 or 5 times in the past 2 weeks with this stunt. It’s deliberate, intentional, and utterly inexcusable.

What do you expect from a station that continually fails at comprehending the differences…
    … between an R and a D?
… between last year and now?
    … between honesty and lies?

If they were a start-up 24 hour “NEWS” channel attempting to break out and they pulled this crap, they would be laughed out of business. Sponsors would dry up. No commercial space purchased…
… They would have to resort to “Public Access” channels just to get affordable air time.
(not that PA doesn’t afford entertainment. quality is the Q.)

Too bad posterity holds much clout, NO?

I like how they made their “apology” during the mid-morning of a weekday on the “Happening Now” show ensuring that the least amount of people see it. Shouldn’t the apology be made by the Manatee in prime time as that is where the “mistake” happened? Maybe next time (it shouldn’t take long).

Now, I am inclined to believe the FOXes. I mean, it would be extremely easy to mix up the tape that the videographer just brought into the studio from today’s event with the tape that the intern had to hunt up in the files in the storage room.

  41. IndiLyndi says:

Fox intentionally does this because, as others have noted, they do not care about the truth. They only care about Rep dogma and hate for Libs. How do I know? I have several family members who consistanly send me bs like Obama is a Muslim and Obama was born in Kenya from Fox and other RW extremists and when I point them to the truth the response is always…”It doesn’t matter if it’s true or not! We have to get the Socialists out!”

You can’t fight intentional ignorance! When someone has decided the truth doesn’t matter there is no point in further discussion. Their “truth” is set in stone and reality has little effect on them.

    ____________

If we’re referring to people who commit suicide in the act of bombing a target, then “suicide bomber” is a perfectly appropriate term. “Homicide bomber” applies to all types of bombs, whether worn on a vest, left in a mailbox, or dropped from a B-52.

  48. DRxJ says:

    ummmm toaster,
You do realize you are using logic on Twajie, right?
That’s like me ’splaining pathophysiology to my dog.
Oh sure, she’s seems interested, but really all she hears is “blah blah. blahblah blah blah. blah.”

    Just sayin’.

  49. PatrioticLiberalChristian says:

DRxJ, your dog looks interested – thus, an improvement over Twajie and its multiple personalities.

  50. Mark701 says:

This is getting to be a habit with them. Jon Stewart just humiliated Hannity on national television for pulling the same stunt a week ago and here they go doing the same thing. These people never learn. Don’t they know we record this stuff?

  51. IndiLyndi says:

I just saw this and HAD to share it here. Fox is getting more and more entertaining with theses mistakes. From The Nation’s website…”During a FOX News segment which discusses the recent release of Sarah Palin’s Going Rogue, the network accidentally shows a graphic of the book Going Rouge: An American Nightmare.”

  52. flavorino says:

    They don’t care.
They are playing to the stupid.
    That’s their audience.

  53. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

They also had to apologize for showing the front cover of “Going Rouge” and stating that it was “Going Rogue”.

    Here’s the Link from TPM.

  54. whirlaway says:

“…using “homicide bomber” sounds appropiate as it covers all the basis.”

No, the term “suicide bomber” is more specific. “Homicide bomber” means that the bomber dropped the bomb and went away – be it on foot, or on a motorbike or an F-16 or a B-52 etc.

  55. pete says:

Once would be a mistake. Twice would be a problem. In the case of FAUX, it’s a pattern of misinformation.

    _____________________________________________________________

This shows that they’re either collectively too incompetent to be on the air at all, or this is deliberate behavior in order to maximize their exposure of Sarah Palin in order to promote her book (screw up with the footage, give more exposure apologizing for it, screw up with the wrong book cover, give more exposure apologizing for it — not to mention the publicity given by other media on the matter).

They’re not worried at all about credibility, since their viewers already worship them as gods, use them as their sole news source, and won’t know the difference. And Fox News doesn’t care what their non-viewers think.

  57. EugeneDebs says:

    TTTC

I believe you are stupid beyond belief, an ignorant punkass troll, a worthless pile of dogshit and a lying piece of garbage

  58. pete says:

Speaking of bombs, why are there so many more shootings in this country than bombings? Because it’s easy to buy guns and it’s hard to buy explosives or their components.

  59. smidget says:

No, TTTC, toasterhead’s definition agrees with whirlaway in all but one respect – that “homicide bomber” could also refer to a suicide bomber.

But clearly the latter is more accurate as that is what is actually taking place. Would you defend a headline that declared a double homicide only to find out that it was actual/y a murder suicide, since the word “homicide” means the intentional death of a person and that’s what suicide is, or would be rational enough to admit it’s misleading?

What part of my Jihadosphere, exactly? I don’t believe I discuss any kind of terrorist activity. It’s mostly climate change stuff on the rare occasions I update.

  62. lexslamman says:

Hmmm, I would accept the apology if it wasn’t for Jon Stewart calling out Hannity for doing the exact same thing just a week ago. By the way, it isn’t like there wasn’t ample footage of actual lines of people waiting for Sarah Palin, many local stations actually got shots of the people waiting for her – Fox News is just lazy and poor reporting.

  63. har5125 says:

Jane “Mrs. NFL Commissioner” Skinner, “After further review the play stands as called, but it’s not our fault!”

  64. Chicano2nd says:

It’s not a sincere apology. It was done to try to give credence to FOX’s contention that it is a “news” organization. Wink! Wink!

  68. ukeman123 says:

that’s nothing compared to the fact that most repuglicans believe Acorn stole the election and Obama actually lost…
FakeNoise is doing its job as usual.

  69. dbadass says:

As per your own definitions, using “homicide bomber” sounds appropiate as it covers all the basis. Why do you have a problem with that term?

    —-
Aren’t you above a thread or two suggesting someone else use spell check or get a ged? Oh an by the way there is another one in #62. You are a joke…

  70. LibertyLover says:

    Only slightly off topic:

In a sit-down with Fox News’ Sean Hannity Wednesday night, the former Alaska governor confused Iraq and Iran several times.

Which makes me wonder: “Is our children learning?” (GW Bush)

  71. BigRenman says:

With time codes on the bottom of video, it is virtually impossible to display the wrong image with a timed event. And yet Fox says it was an accident, every single time…

  72. Marie says:

    Just what we thought –
They talk about the book tour all day, with repeted showing of the wrong video, assuring that their viewers saw it at least one if not several times.
They are called out on it and issue an apology in mid-day on one show.
    Their mission was already accomplished.
This happens all too often and is worth of an FCC investigation.

  73. slappy magoo says:

Another thing to consider is the sheer volume of businesses that leave Fox News on all day, not even necessarily with the sound on. I avoid them as much as possible, but I’ve been in diners or bagel shops or doctors’ offices where Fox news is more or less moving wallpaper. And that’s to say nothing of it airing in places like hospital emergency room waiting areas and rest home common areas, places where the audience might not be as engaged as an individual choosing to watch it at home. And what do they see? Footage of Palin with captions indicating it’s at her book signing, or tens of thousands of people supposedly at Bachmann’s health care rally who weren’t. The image is everything, and if they’re not hearing the story in the first place, they’re probably not hearing the apology, leaving only the false image in peoples’ minds, which becomes a reality. If you think Fox News doesn’t know this, and uses this ignorance to their advantage, then Fox News is using you to their advantage.

  74. moonsha says:

Talk about manufacturing a screw up on purpose in order to go back on air to apologize all for the sake of trying to look responsible. As if Fox has an ounce of journalistic integrity at this point!
