One of the worst abuses of the private health insurance industry is its practice of denying claims to pay for necessary care for patients. This practice has become so rampant in the industry that a recent study by the California Nurses Association found that a whopping 21 percent of all insurance claims filed in the first half of 2009 in the state of California were denied by insurers.
As the story of six-year-old Madison Leuchtmann of Franklin County, MO, demonstrates, even children are victims of this insurance company abuse. Madison was born with bilateral atresia, which means she lacks ear canals in both ears. In order to hear, she wears a special device on a headband that allows her to make out sounds. Despite her disability, Madison is at the top of her kindergarten class and is slowly learning to read.
Yet Madison, due to her growth, will soon require a new hearing implant to be able to recognize sounds. Her hearing and speech therapist warns that “if she doesn’t get her implants by age seven, she’s not going to be able to blend her words. … She won’t be able to hear herself [talk].” Madison’s pediatrician, Dr. Randall Clary, also insists that without the implant, the girl may never be able to hear again.
Unfortunately, the Leuchtmann’s family insurer, Cigna, has issued “one denial after another,” flatly refusing to cover the $20,000 bill for the implant. In a written statement to the local news station Fox 2, Cigna explained, “It is not unusual for commercial benefit plans to exclude hearing assisted devices,” prompting Dr. Clary to angrily respond, “This is obviously medically necessary. You have a child that has no ear canals!” Dr. Clary also told Fox 2 that he sees these sort of denials “on a weekly basis.” Watch Fox 2’s report:
The United States is the only developed country without a universal, cradle-to-the-grave health care system. In no other developed country would a girl be on “the verge of never hearing again” because a for-profit insurance company decided that its bottom line was more important than keeping a child from going deaf.
TTTC…do you know you are being used as a tool?
Probably not…do you even have a pulse?
November 19th, 2009 at 2:56 pmIt’s obvious that the Cigna executives are as deaf as the girl they’re condeming to a life without the ability to hear.
This isn’t a cosmetic procedure. The girl and her family aren’t asking for anything that isn’t a medical necessity.
For as much shit as the Senate/House bills contain, both eliminate the kind of absolutely callous indifference that Cigna’s exhibiting.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:59 pmUsed as a tool?! He is a tool! Insurance companies do this all the time. Books have been written about the crap they pull to make a profit. Wake up TTTC! On second thought, just go back to sleep, I really don’t want to hear anymore from you.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:59 pmThree words, TTTC: John Shadegg’s prop.
November 19th, 2009 at 2:59 pmRepublican response -

Where’s her boot straps?
But then, we can always count on TTTC (Scumbag supreme) to show us just how stupid stupid can get.

Does this girl no she’s being used as a propaganda pawn?
Does that invalidate the assertion that for profit healthcare is atrocious? No, it doesn’t, and I know from personal experience that they routinely reject first claims, in order to reduce their expenses. it happened to me, when I blew my knee out, and had to wait over three months to be ok’s for surgery – afte rfirst being denied, and having to file an appeal.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:00 pmThe person that signed off on the “Denial of Services” letter needs a red hot coat hanger stuck in both their ear canals, live on TV!

November 19th, 2009 at 3:03 pmPropaganda Pawn? Do the names Pat Tillman and Jessica Lynch mean anything to you?
At least in this young girl’s case, the ‘propaganda’ is based on fact, instead of a fiction created by the White House spinmeisters…
November 19th, 2009 at 3:04 pmI’m sorry, I got the price wrong. It’s $18.21

November 19th, 2009 at 3:05 pmThis is common for most insurance companies. Hearing impairment is seldom covered.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:05 pmMorally deaf, morally dumb and morally blind: that’s what greed creates in private insurance companies and their Republicant and Bleu-dawg enablers…

Is that you, Gretchen Carlson?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:09 pmThe only way to get this little girl some justice is to make the video go viral. It will give the insurance company (yet another) black eye… even if they don’t reverse themselves, the public will still be warned against this company.
Any Missouri lawyers out here in the Blogosphere willing to take this case pro-bono?????
November 19th, 2009 at 3:10 pmTTHC said Does this girl no she’s being used as a propaganda pawn?
The use of “propaganda” to help a child not lose her hearing is far superior to spamming liberal web sites in a desperate effort to save a dying conservative movement.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:10 pmI bet she’d listen to you tell her all about how she’s ‘a propaganda tool,’ TTTC and listen happily… if that meant she was able to hear for the rest of her life.
Jeebuz.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:11 pm$20,000 for one implant for one girl? That’s an awful lot of money! Why, it’s 1% of somebody’s bonus! What do you expect from CIGNA?
/snark off
November 19th, 2009 at 3:12 pmIsn’t it wonderful that in TTTC’s wonderful free market world this child doesn’t have to worry about the evil government getting between her doctors and her health care? Her family paid their money to the insurance company and poof, she is being taken care of.

November 19th, 2009 at 3:15 pm$20,000? What the Fu*k is 20 grand to an insurance company. These SOBs rake in billions and they have the BALLS to deny a girl the sense of hearing because they are to friggin greedy? There is a specisl place in Hell for these people. What ever happened to empathy?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:15 pmI am in tears. I am so hurt that Cigna is denying this beautiful child an implant that will help make her more successful. This particulary affects me because I am a retired teacher who saw this same situation over and over again for 33 years. I can’t type much more right now because I am too upset. Does anyone posting here have a way to get a donation to this family?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:15 pmTTTC is not American.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:15 pmTTTC obviously gets such pleasure from hearing himself talk, I wonder why he would deny that pleasure to others?

You know, Wolfsinger, in the 80s I too was a Christian fundamentalist. Back in those days, I would never have supported those who would deny a little girl her surgery. We actually did have compassion back then. The Christian Right Wing of today is completely unrecognizable compared to back then. There is no Biblical view that could possibly support or justify the insurance company’s position… just goes to show… how they’ve moved from moralism in the 80s to naked corporatism today! Jesus would be so ashamed. Reminds me of Him who said that if you don’t do it for the least of my brethren, you don’t do it unto me.

November 19th, 2009 at 3:19 pm@36, We have had enough of you. Defending something like this is immoral. What would Jesus do? Side with a billion dallor industry or the plight of an innocent child. Get lost you friggin loser.

Let’s show them what it looks like.

Why is it that auto insurance companies are out there competing against each other, providing services and there is a genuine free market type dynamic happening there but for some reason health insurance is in its own little world?
Because there are only a handful of corporations that provide insurance – in fact in some places there is only ONE provider for an entire town – and the rules they helped pass make it near impossible for new players.
Also, the corporations have ‘captured’ the government by controlling the regulators. Fact is, most of the health insurance and drug companies higher ups at one time worked for the regulators/government.
For this reason a single payer system will never happen. And don’t be fooled, both parties are implicit in allowing it to happen and to continue it’s ’success’.

This is common for most insurance companies. Hearing impairment is seldom covered.
_____________________________________________________________
True for most private insurance companies. However, Medicare covers most hearing issues, and Medicaid often does (coverage varies from state to state, but children are almost always covered for hearing impairment).
One of our trolls snidely asks if “Harry’s plan” would give everyone blanket coverage for hearing impairment, no matter what.
I don’t have the answer to that, but it appears that government programs are much better at hearing impairment coverage than private insurers, so I’d be willing to bet that the public option portion of “Harry’s plan” would indeed cover this child.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:35 pmThe troll is so irrelevant it’s painful to watch him not only make fool, but demonstrate the worst qualities humanity has to offer.
What is relevant is that ours is the only developed country in the world where this happens. Even a semi-corporate-friendly bill like what Senate Dems are offering would prevent something like this from happening. It’s time to tune out the sociopaths, religious fanatics, fascists, corporate apologists and even the unfortunate individuals who find themselves defending the indefensible because they work in the industry. We need to move on and demand that this, at least, gets done.

Here Here! I grew up in a vibrant Protestant church as well. Time was, all a minister had to say was little more than what is in the headlines here and the entire congregation would weep and the cash would flow. Calls would be made on her behalf and they would have done it anonymously!
We weren’t cowards. We didn’t get taught fear. We were chastised for our petty biases and we tried to be better than our selves. Today’s Christian GOP thugs are truly the most mean spirited jackals I’ve ever encountered since the Neo-Nazi movements of the mid to late 70’s.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:37 pmTTTC, What the hell is up with the ‘Strikes’? And NOBODY mentioned ‘death’ As*hole. Are you scared or something?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:38 pmGood luck defending this denial, CIGNA (I worked for them for 10 years).
While it’s true that the vast majority of policies I’ve dealt with do not cover hearing aids, tests, etc., it’s always been in the context they are considered “routine” (as in almost everyone’s hearing eventually gets worse as part of the aging process). This girl’s situation, however, is clearly not “routine”, and I’m surprised CIGNA is trying to deny it.
Besides that, CIGNA is being short sighted (and stupid) in that therapy and other medical services that will probably end up being necessary (and covered) due to the girl not receiving a hearing aid will end up costing them more in the long run than the hearing aid. Dumb.
The girl’s parents need to get a lawyer involved – I know from my experience when that happened, CIGNA usually would pay the claim as the legal expenses usually end up costing them a lot more.

November 19th, 2009 at 3:39 pmGotta wonder how our little trollie would take it if its doctor informed him that he’s got some ’suspicious lesions’ in his lungs, and his insurance company wanted him to wait 90 days to see if they went away or didn’t grow before they’d authorize to pay for tests to see if it might be malignant.
My guess is you’d hear the wailing and gnashing of trolltooth stumps from miles out.

November 19th, 2009 at 3:39 pmSo where’s Virginia Foxx to tell this child to go to an emergency room?
November 19th, 2009 at 3:40 pmSooner or later, this country will realize that health care is as basic a need as police & fire protection. As clean water and sewage treatment. And as important as providing for the common defense. We cannot have a viable society if the basic needs are not met and it is up to all of us to contribute to insure these needs are met.
November 19th, 2009 at 3:42 pmTTTC couldn’t wait to post his callous comments. Obviously he doesn’t have children and though he probably never will he ought to be very worried about karma.

November 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pmOne of the big problems of Financial industry is that some companies have gotten too big to fail.
The insurance industry has a similar problem…they are too big to care.

November 19th, 2009 at 4:08 pmSo, TTTC. For your abject stupidity and mean spirited trolling, you’ve received more justifiable criticism than just about any other troll that has posted here. Ever!
This clearly demonstrates that you are a pathetic masochist who has abandonment issues. You want to drop a steamer of a troll message and leave but you crave attention, even if its not favorable to you. So you grab your gun and wet your pants and troll on. One hand on your keyboard. The other with your thumb in your mouth.
Listen, TTTC. I think your mommy is calling.
By the way? What do you want to be when you grow up?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:09 pmTTTC says:
We have private insurance and we are very happy with it.
The deaf girl has private insurance, too. The insurance company is refusing to pay for the medical treatment she requires.
When your insurance company denies vital treatment to your son, will you explain to him that whatever illness he has isn’t “so bad”?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:09 pmClassy, he says.
Like suggesting that this girl is lucky to be deaf because at least she doesn’t have cancer.
I’m sure her mother feels EXTREMELY fortunate that she’s been paying for health insurance for all these years just to be denied a legitimate claim for her nearly-deaf daughter. Who the fcuk wouldn’t feel fortunate, right?
BTW, please tell me someone else has custody of that child. It would be a real tragedy for you to raise a human being as horrible as you are.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:10 pmIt is my personal opinion that none of the people who head these organizations will act to reduce such suffering without their own personal experience with pain and suffering. They have traded in human compassion for mammon, and mere humane behavior is of no consequence to them.
I want to be clear about the aforementioned remark. I DO NOT advocate, nor condone violence, but if legal means do not produce a change in their attitudes and actions violence against these executives will be the only way to alter their predatory behavior and prevent them from hurting others just like six-year-old Madison Leuchtmann. For sure, knowing human nature, someday blood will be spilled over this lack of decency in the pursuit of profits. I don’t think that time is far off.
Recently, I had a startling conversation with an acquaintance who one could refer to as a right wing militia-type. He told me that while it was true that shooting a federal politician was a federal crime, shooting one of their family members was not. It basically scared the shit out of me because this fellow was a college educated man who had simply “had enough,” and had already widened his sphere of potential enemy targets to include family members of those whom he thought were responsible for his own troubles. Once society reaches such a critical mass of potential violence it is going to require tremendous efforts of civilized society to pull these people back from the edge of such madness. Once some distraught parent, child, or spouse begins shooting executives of health insurance companies because corporate decisions to increase profits kills their relative all hell will break loose in this country and a real class war could erupt.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:10 pmDoes this girl no she’s being used as a propaganda pawn?
I guess ‘classy’ only goes one way for TTTC. Typical.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:10 pmTTTC says:
Maybe this girl and her mother should visit a childrens cancer hospital. Being deaf wouldn’t be so bad. Just a thought.
and a very very stupid thought at that!!!!!!!!!
November 19th, 2009 at 4:10 pmTTTC,
Hope and pray that your son doesn’t come down with something that some pencil pusher at your health insurance company doesn’t want to pay for. What is happening to the six year old, could be you and your family.

My son is taken care of by myself and his mother. We have private insurance and we are very happy with it.
_____________________________________________________________
It’s good that you have private insurance. People who have insurance are likely to be healthier than people who don’t.
Are you paying for your insurance entirely out of your own pocket? If so, congratulations on being able to afford it. Insuring a family of three isn’t cheap. But your insurance will last until one of you requires some expensive care and your insurance company decides it’s cheaper to rescind your coverage (they’ll find a reason) than to pay your claims.
Are you covered through your employer? Most Americans who have private coverage are. This is also good. And it will last until your employer can no longer afford to provide that benefit for you. Every year, as the cost of insurance skyrockets, more employers stop providing insurance for their employees, or they opt for programs offering reduced coverage, or they require a bigger portion of the premium to come from the employee.
And, of course, if you are covered through your employer and you lose your job, you’re screwed. COBRA is not only expensive for you (you’ll have to pay 100% of your coverage), but it’s temporary.
So I’m glad you have insurance. But do not be so smug as to think you are somehow immune to losing it. It can happen to any of us.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:15 pmVote down pussy is back!
Grow a spine, vote down pussy, and actually make an argument if you disagree.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:16 pmThe reality is you THINK your covered by insurance. The reality is you are blind to all the REAL cases where coverage is denied. Perhaps reality is too scary for you.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:19 pmI have visited there. I have watched people die of cancer. My mother has cancer. I know exactly how horrible it is. Don’t you DARE fcuking tell me anything like you goddamn know what’s going on, you piece of shit.
But you know what? The existence of cancer in children doesn’t mean it’s okay that this child is deaf, andit doesn’t mean that they are fortunate to have been paying for private insurance only to be shit on because these cheap bastards don’t want to shell out for the implant.
THAT’S why you’re a disgusting excuse for a human being.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:19 pmttc is the stereotypical righty masturbator,
rambling on about personality issues and policy strawmen and the other types of drivel that preoccupy mediocre minds,
endlessly engaged in delusional and paranoid analysis, conducted with faulty tools and methods – thinking better suited to developing B movie scripts than managing a Nation.
i hope he gets to vote for Huck in 2012. tttc’s brand of constituent deserves exactly that kind of representation.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:22 pmI’ve had it with the bullshit spewing out of this subhuman piece of filth.
I’m off to a new thread. Nothing that this subhuman piece of garbage says will ever make this better. NOTHING. It actually is making the argument that because it could be worse, they should feel lucky. What a rare find. I’m sure it’s mother is so fcuking proud of the compassionate person she raised.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:27 pmTTTC says:
Well I guess you could be right…It could be worse, she could be you.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:27 pmBy the way – Based on your logic, maybe all those cancer-ridden children should feel lucky because, hey, at least it’s not Tay Sach’s…right?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:28 pmPeople, tttc has been here annoying people since the beginning and I, for one, have yet to see a cogent argument other than something like “I take care of myself and everyone else should do the same.” What is the point of engaging someone who clearly has no arguments? The guy’s like a fly buzzing around your head while you’re trying to do something important. If you can’t swat him away, you at least try to ignore him.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:30 pmFor Profit Insurance = Death Panels
Something the right-whiners refuse to admit as they push their fabricated lies about any other possible option than for-profit death panel status-quo.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pmHad a cancer scare? TTTC, you ARE a cancer.
You have the audacity at 142 to say that its “unfortunate” that is girl is deaf? You truly do not get it and you like it that way.
I don’t wish cancer on anyone. Not even you.
But I don’t wish YOU on anyone, either!
November 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pmTTTC, stop beating around the bush and tell us why you don’t think this girl’s insurance carrier should provide the medical care that they are being paid to provide?
Do you think that this girl should have “worked harder” in the womb so that she could have ear canals?
November 19th, 2009 at 4:32 pmAnd you’ve taught him so much empathy and compassion I can’t wait until you’re old and he tells you he’s too busy and can’t be bothered worrying about your problems.

TTTC is intentionally blind, deaf and dumb to reality, so he sees no problem in allowing children to suffer from treatable illnesses.
When right-whiners deafen themselves from the truth, is it any surprise they don’t care at all about the health of children, women, or anyone else?

TTTC – Go home.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:36 pmAND IT COULD BE BETTER IF THE INSURANCE HER PARENTS HAVE WOULD PAY FOR THE PROCEDURE A$$HOLE.
November 19th, 2009 at 4:36 pmSince CIGNA also insures the RNC I wonder how many of the RNC’s claims have been denied. My guess is none.
Someone should investigate how many of the RNC participants in the plan putm in claims for abortions since the plan was instituted in 1991 and how many of all RNC claims were denied by CIGNA since 1991.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:19 pmWhy all the arguing? The plain and simple truth is that the GOP could care less about providing a comprehensive health care package for all americans, because we aren’t fetuses. health care for people from cradle to the grave is socialism. Republicans will execute prisoners by the dozens, allow American citizens to die from curable diseases or maladies; but, they will kill you if you decide to have an abortion.
November 19th, 2009 at 5:24 pmIF the insurance companies do this while they are under intense scrutiny because of the healthcare debate, what do they do when they aren’t under such scrutiny ?

November 19th, 2009 at 6:47 pmI tried to vote you up, but the clergy here says that I had already put forward a vote – not true!
As the physician said this happens on a weekly basis.
No words to describe the evil, inhumane and calloused method of business the HC insurance companies engage in. And I suppose the CEO’s enjoy their millions in bonuses without even giving a thought of the death and destruction they cause. These bastards do not deserve the give away the House and senate bill will give them.
I will bet cable news media will not touch this story.
November 19th, 2009 at 7:28 pmIn all fairness though, the article says “This practice has become so rampant in the industry that a recent study by the California Nurses Association found that a whopping 21 percent of all insurance claims filed in the first half of 2009 in the state of California were denied by insurers.”
California isn’t exactly the easiest place to make money, as an insurance business. I’d just wonder what the ratings are for the other states to see if they are similarly bad.
November 19th, 2009 at 7:37 pmRegarding the propaganda pawn arguments above (I don’t agree, but running with that argument).
Do you realize that her parents are forced into a situation such that going public is the only way they can get the needed care for their daughter ??????
November 19th, 2009 at 10:19 pmBut if Cigna did this type of thing for everyone, think how much their profits would decline. Would you take a dividend check away from an old lady depending upon just her dividends — in addition to her social security, municipal bond interest, cd interest, and annuities — to survive? How can anyone even conceive of treating the egregiously wealthy so horribly? Do you realize that if insurance firms are required to pay for the healthcare of young ladies like this, it could end up with the top 1/100 of 1% of our country no longer being worth over $25 million a household? Do you realize you’ll be forcing them to be worth perhaps less than $24 million per household? Their per capita income (of the top 1/100 of 1%, that is, about 30,000 people nationwide) might even fall from over $250,000 to as little as $245,000?
OH, THE HUMANITY.
We could end up with families of 4 forced to survive on less than $1 million per year. How can you live with yourselves to let that happen? I know for a fact, because I’ve seen it, that the enormously wealthy here in NYC on the upper East Side — mainly the folks living at the Plaza and at the Pierre because I’ve spoken to the doormen at both — have consistently tipping taxi drivers at least 50 cents more, on every trip they take. If we just rely upon all the enormously wealthy to give more to all, rather than to tax them more, our financial troubles will all be over in less than one thousand years, for sure. Isn’t that enough? 40 generations from now, your progeny will be doing well — maybe.
