New Right-Wing Craze Prays That Obama’s ‘Days Be Few’

Pray For Obama Merchandise The newest far-right craze is an anti-Obama slogan that is making its way onto t-shirts, bumper stickers, mugs, and even teddy bears: “Pray for Obama: Psalm 109:8,” which reads, “Let his days be few; and let another take his office.” The meme is also taking off on Twitter, with conservatives calling it “hilarious.” Commentators have noted that it’s unclear whether the intent is to hope for an end to Obama’s time in office — or an end to his life. But a look at the lines in the rest of the psalm hint at the latter:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.
Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labor.
Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favor his fatherless children.
Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.
Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the LORD; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.
Let them be before the LORD continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Diana Butler Bass at Beliefnet explains that Psalm 109 is one of the “imprecatory” prayers, “a lament in the form of petition to destroy one’s enemies.” While perhaps intended to be a joke, she notes that the psalm actually “entreats God to destroy the president”:

It is the personal prayer of an individual, someone who has been dealt an injustice by another–and usually more powerful–person. The words of Psalm 109 are those of deep agony, the longings of a victim for retribution and justice. This psalm is considered one of the most difficult of all the psalms–full of violent images of vengeance and death.

Quite a few of the “Pray for Obama” items are being sold at CafePress.com, although many of them have been taken off of the site (here’s a cached version of some of them). Cafe Press representative Margene H. told ThinkProgress that while the site took down some of the “Pray for Obama” items today, it is now in the process of reinstating them:

We initially pulled the Psalm 109:8 content from our products today because broader media dialog indicated that these designs potentially suggested violence towards the president. Based on current public discourse and further review of the actual content, we have determined that it is fair political commentary and we are in the process of reinstating this merchandise. As with all of our content, these designs will continue to be reviewed and if at any time their meaning is construed as advocating violence we will revisit our decision.

On Tuesday, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow spoke with “Patience With God” author Frank Schaeffer, who said that while the psalm was “frightening” in a secular context, it’s even “more threatening” in a biblical context.

So that means that since the current public discourse is in the toilet, we will allow it to continue?

  6. ObamaPride3 says:

This is just absolutely “crazy”. What is wrong with these people? Using God’s name to kill the leader of our America is some kind of cute joke to them? Absolutely “crazy” and just so “sad”.

  7. glogrrl says:

These “Christians” are not worthy to speak The Lord’s name. Praying for the death of a public official……..I think that is lower than the proverbial snake’s belly…and maybe God thinks so, too. If they believe in God, maybe they will accept whatever fate befalls them for being so un-Christian. I will never understand why all Republicans are so angry, so uncaring about others, and obsessed with killing and violence toward the people who don’t think like them–it goes against true Christian principles.

  8. cd says:

Once again the religious right only seems to have read the Old Testement.

    Luke 6:27-36

“But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.”

  9. missmolly says:

I have laughed at a number of signs, bumper stickers, and T-shirts expressing negative thoughts about George W. Bush and Dick Cheney (many of them quite humorous, I thought).

But I have never laughed at or supported any jibe that suggested they should be dead. Or that wished harm to their families. That’s over the top.

  10. P.D. says:

Isn’t this illegal? If ‘Liberals’ pulled this with Bush, we would be in Gitmo by now. These ‘Religious’ folks are advocating violence. I’m really sure Jesus would approve. Snark.

  11. raynman says:

we have determined that it is fair political commentary

Since when has an implicit threat against the life of the President of the United States been ‘fair political commentary’?

I used to pity these poor right wingers… now I’m scared of what they, in their pious zealous fervor, might perpetrate upon our country.

  12. Hoodathunk says:

It wasn’t enough that they want the man to fail. That was pretty petty and unAmerican.

Uh, the Bible in many, many more places instructs us to pray for our leaders.

as for crowd that likes the Bears, remember that a man wanted guidance from the Bible by opening it at random locations in the new testament.

First verse he found was “Judas went out and hanged himself.”

He didn’t understand till he opened the Bible again to “As that man did, do thou likewise.”

Third attempt was “What thou doest, do so quickly.”

  15. Art says:

These people better be careful. They are dealing with some dangerous gris-gris. Whatever they wish on others, eventually comes back at them.

Just a note, in my church, we pray for the health and protection of his family and ask for the gift of wisdom for the president.

What is happening to these people? Where is the godly example to be set by the religious right?

I assume the religious right is providing the religious justification for the killing of Obama. I am sure a member on the right”s fringe is taking notice.

I’ll grant the stupid troll a point. It was not unusual to see some pretty hateful comments about our former President. Generally, someone would call out such comments and I challenged a few myself. After all, if we become what we despise we lose.

On the other hand, what one did not see was “lefty” groups marketing merchandise that called for dire personal harm to anybody, including the former President.

  35. Leftside Annie says:

What a lame, infantile comment, worse than you normally do.

By the way, you’re dam”ed right I can’t take it!! I took this oath over 40 years ago:

I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God. During that time I spent my military career defending against our foreign. I still live by that oath and anyone who utters a spoken or written threat against MY President will have to deal with me.

Also “Con Guy”, I’m a man of my word, for I would do the same for Bush. To me, whoever is in the office is my Commander-in-Chief, someone who shoulders more responsibility than me or you for that matter. He, no matter who it is, deserves our support, whether we voted for him or not.

Disagree with him all you want, I defended that right for you, but respect the man AND the office or you will deal with me! I disagreed with Bush and when given the chance I voted against him, BUT I never would or will wished him ill because not only am I an American, I’m also a Christian who remembers that my God is a forgiving God and loves us all, even you.

But at what point does it make rational sense to wish him and his family personal tragedy? Make his wife a widow and his children fatherless? WTF?

Additionally, If I were a Christian I wouldn’t be highlighting this Psalm at all. How Christian is pray for innocent children to become vagabonds and beggars?

The people wearing these shirts should be less concerned with President Obama’s administration and more troubled that the God they invest their prayers in would condone and support vengeance.

It is one thing to say you are something, it is another to live each day as something. Every deed, every word both in private and public will define your faith.

These just are not Christian people. I don’t know who/what they are, but they are not Christian. Judging from their rhetoric and their actions, my guess would be that they have been deceived and are followers of the Prince of Lies.

  116. wizard2000 says:

Members of the Army of God will no doubt snap up this assassination-promoting souvenir.

Shortly after the 9/11 attacks and someone mailing lethal anthrax through the USPS in late 2001, a member of the Army of God, an escaped convict, mailed close to 500 terrorist letters (containing non-lethal powder) to family planning clinics throughout the American Midwest. He was recaptured. A year or two later, his federal trial venue was shifted to Philadelphia PA, where he was tried and convicted, and given more jail time. There was mainly local news coverage of this Army of God guy, with scant national news coverage, even as tens of thousands of right-wing copycat terrorist mailings occurred across the country.

Often religious fervor kills, or leads to terrorist mailings, so in my view, anything that tries to pump up religious fervor, especially in America, can only end badly.

Organized Christianity has become the prodigal son; they wallow as swinehearders, dead to God’s words. These lost sons more resemble the foretold false prophets than followers of Jesus. The GOP and American Christian organizations have aligned themselves to the evils of distortions, lies, hate, fear and racism. Truth rings hollow in their ears. They worship human idols that spew the vile venom that their sullied hearts and souls yearn for. God will not judge them kindly for their blasphemy of his word. All Americans and American children in particular need to disavow themselves from these organizations; they are what you suspect. The Chrisitian churches are empty of any blessing or grace. They are not the temple where God dwells.

Republicans ARE practicing seditious DEMAGOGUERY and anti-democracy OBSTRUCTIONISM intended to destabilize our economy for purposes of political exploitation.

Republicans AREN’T making a sincere effort to STOP the bleeding THEIR incompetent leadership and failed policies created. Instead, they’re using inflammatory lies and accusations as a smokescreen to conceal their subversive agenda, which is to cause President Obama and America to fail so they can blame Democrats for the consequences of THEIR calamitous mismanagement.

Republicans ARE preposterously professing that THEIR disgraceful political WHORING had nothing to do with the banking, real estate, stock market and employment catastrophes that resulted.

Republicans ARE trying to hamstring Democrats to prevent them from repairing the damage caused during a Republican presidency that was irresponsibly enabled by Republican Senators and Representatives.

Republicans ARE offering ridiculous arguments meant solely to disrupt and prevent progressive change. They’d rather divide America and create political gridlock than endure the political consequences of effective Democratic governance.

Republicans AREN’T the LOYAL OPPOSITION; they ARE the ENEMY WITHIN whose mercenary personal priorities have eroded their moral and ethical standards to the point that duplicity and betrayal are their preferred modus operandi.

It’s one thing to advocate their conservative beliefs; it’s another thing entirely to willfully sabotage America’s government because a successful Democratic presidency would not be vulnerable to the greed, fears and hatreds that have produced and sustained the radical Republican anti-government corporatism and anti-Christian faux theocracies that are poisoning and crippling American society

  158. Virtual Pebble says:

This episode is just another example of (seriously wrong-headed) Christianist pick’n'choose exigesis; note that the originator starts with “verse” 8, not verse 1. The Psalm takes on an entirely different meaning if the quote starts at 1; it goes thusly:

O God of my praise, be silent no longer, for wicked men heap calumnies upon me.

They have lied to my face and ringed me round with words of hate.

They have attacked me without a cause and accused me though I have done nothing unseemly.

They have repaid me evil for good and hatred in return for my love.

They say, ‘Put up some rascal to denounce him, an accuser to stand at his right side.’

But when judgement is given, that rascal will be exposed and his follies accounted a sin.

May his days be few; may his (charge, office) fall to another!… (and so on and so forth)

Given THAT prologue to the t-shirt “message”, it seems to me that President Obama or someone else under attack by the arseholes of the right could quite appropriately speak those words. The curse which starts at verse 8 is most appropriately directed at the people on the right who are busily heaping lies and calumny on our head of state.

Playing pick’n'choose games with Scripture is not good form, trolls. Quoting that book, or any other, out of context, is usually a serious mistake; tends to not only not support an argument, but may even blow back on you.

If they are not wholly blinded by their animosity, they will discover that the words “Let his days be few,” etc., are words spoken by “wicked and treacherous mouths,” those who “speak against me with lying tongues.”

And verses 20-31 might serve as a warning to them: “May the LORD bring all this upon my accusers, upon those who speak evil against me.” “Clothe my accusers with disgrace; make them wear shame like a mantle.” “Though they curse, may you bless; shame my foes, that your servant may rejoice.”

My, my, look at this! It’s a response to a heated email I sent them about this “product”…

    Thank you for contacting CafePress.com!

This morning we made the decision to remove all Psalms 109:8 designs from CafePress.

The public debate started with questioning if the design was simply intended to be criticism of the President or something much worse. The discourse was surprisingly civil online, given the heated nature of the topic. Given that, and the positions of groups like the ACLU and the Anti-Defamation League, we decided to let the dialogue play out publicly before making a final decision.

Last night we posted a poll on our blog, read through the emails we’ve received and weighed the nature of the calls we’ve received on the topic. In the process we also learned that many of the original designers of the Psalm 109:8 designs had already decided to remove them on their own.

General consensus has proven that the design does point to a broader interpretation of the Psalm and thus has been deemed inappropriate for sale at CafePress.

We try to create an atmosphere of self-expression. Many of the things we encounter are not black and white, but grey. When the dialogue is civil, we want to let the larger community work things out rather than making an uninformed ruling. The dialogue has played out and common sentiment has reached agreement – this merchandise is not appropriate.

  179. WaltK13 says:

Why should anyone be surprised by this latest burst of hate, from the whitened sepulchers that control today’s Republican Party. As always they have to resort to the Old Testament to inflame and exhibit their hate; because they can’t find the necessary venom in the Gospel teachings of the one they claim to follow.
