Speaking with Palin, Dennis Miller transitions from calling Newsweek cover ’sexist’ to insulting Hillary Clinton.
Earlier this week, Sarah Palin wrote on her Facebook page that Newsweek’s choice to use a Runner’s World photo of her in running shorts for its cover was “unfortunate” and “sexist.” Palin’s criticism has since been echoed on both the left and right. Interviewing Palin on his radio show yesterday, Dennis Miller added his voice to those calling the cover “sexist.” But he then did something that most of the other critics haven’t done. He immediately followed it with a joke about Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that could also be easily characterized as sexist:
MILLER: Listen, Sarah, I have to ask you. This Newsweek cover. First off, I have two thoughts on this. To me it seems blatantly sexist and secondly I’m just glad they didn’t decide to do it with Hillary during the primaries. But your thoughts on it. You a little POed at this? I mean this was for another magazine, right?
PALIN: Yeah, yeah, it was for a health and fitness profile where I could tout the great outdoors of Alaska in Runner’s World months ago. And yeah, Newsweek. That was really snarky and cheesy and quite indicative though too, Dennis, of the state of journalism today. I think it stinks.

As ThinkProgress noted yesterday, it is conventional wisdom on the right that conservative women get harsher treatment than liberal women. But Miller’s hypocritical comments and Palin’s lack of concern with them, give weight to those who argue that Palin and her conservative followers have a selective perception of social bias.

If Newsweek wanted to be true to, say, Palin’s qualifications to run for office on the national level, the cover should have depicted her sitting on a stool in the corner wearing a dunce cap.
Or, if they wanted to encompass her trajectory on the national stage so far, they could have portrayed sitting her on a huge stack of money praying to God for still more.

Last night I received this email from Cafepress on the Psalm 109.8 merchandise.
…we made the decision to remove all Psalms 109:8 designs …
The public debate started with questioning if the design was simply intended to be criticism of the President or something much worse. …positions of groups like the ACLU and the Anti-Defamation League, we decided to let the dialogue play out publicly before making a final decision.
Last night we … read through the emails we’ve received and weighed the nature of the calls …we also learned that many of the original designers of the Psalm 109:8 designs had already decided to remove them on their own.
General consensus has proven that the design does point to a broader interpretation of the Psalm and thus has been deemed inappropriate for sale at CafePress.

On Tuesday, Palin went on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show where she outrageously — and falsely — suggested that Americans could “face jail time as punishment” if they don’t buy insurance.

Hillary Clinton graduated from Yale Law School and had a successful career as an attorney. Palin barely got out of college. Clinton was elected Senator from New York and has held a political office since that time. Palin quit midterm in the only office she was elected. If Miller has to discuss the qualifications of both women, there is nothing Miller can say about Hillary. The fact he attacks her on a personal basis points out Miller’s lack of substance. You will be hard pressed to find anyone who has criticized Palin on a personal basis. She has so little qualification for any office that it is unnecessary to attack her on a personal basis.

First, Valerie Plame WAS, technically, a “spy.” She worked as a covert agent running front companies involved in tracking the illegal proliferation of nuclear weaponry. Here’s the republican Special Prosecutor himself:

And, as far as “what WMD’s” is concerned, the record shows that Ms. Plame’s front company was mainly interested in Iran and Pakistan – I’m sure you would agree that our intelligence agencies should be monitoring that activity, right? Evidently, Dick Cheney didn’t agree and the record shows that he screwed up the entire operation. In fact, some of Ms Plame’s contacts in other countries may have been murdered as a result of the outing.

But seriously, you really should get out of the house more, rather than sitting around all day in your underwear engaging in imaginary “debates” with total strangers. Go out and interact with actual people, see a movie, go out to eat… have some fun!
