In an address to the nation next Tuesday, President Barack Obama will reportedly announce a decision he has already made on the future of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. McClatchy reports he has finalized a plan to dispatch some 34,000 additional U.S. troops over the next year.
Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag attended the war council meeting in the Situation Room last night, the ninth such meeting held by President Obama to discuss his strategy in Afghanistan. Asked by Politico why Orszag was at the meeting, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said, “Cost is a concern.”
Gen. Stanley McChrystal and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, the top U.S. general and the top U.S. diplomat in Afghanistan, have been instructed to prepare to testify before Congress as early as next week. The two are expected to “offer details and support for the president’s strategy for how to proceed with the eight-year-old war.”
In a new survey released today, the nonpartisan Robert Wood Johnson Foundation found that while Americans are split on whether potential changes to the health care system “will be for good or ill,” they still “seem to want lawmakers to tackle health care.” “Seventy-nine percent say it is important for President Barack Obama to include health care reform in addressing the nation’s economic crisis.”
Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has said that under no circumstances will he vote for a health care reform bill that contains any form of a public option. “I’m going to be stubborn on this,” he said. When asked if any version of public option will compel him to vote against bringing the bill to a final vote, Lieberman replied, “Correct.”
Yesterday, a “group of conservative Republican leaders” unveiled a “purity test” for potential GOP candidates, which, if adopted, would force the RNC to “withhold campaign money and endorsements from candidates who do not adhere to at least seven principles on the checklist.” The 10-point list gauges adherence to principles like “opposing government financing for abortion” and opposing a “socialist agenda.”
Nearly one in four mortgages are under water, according to an analysis by First American CoreLogic, a leading real-estate company. The company’s analysis finds that nearly 10.7 million households had negative equity in their homes during the first quarter of 2009.
The U.S. “will identify a near-term emission reduction target as part of an effort to reach a comprehensive climate agreement in Copenhagen next month as long as other major greenhouse gas emitters do the same.” But officials warned against negotiating “above the targets in domestic legislation” might risk “support for that legislation in the Senate.”
A report by the South Carolina state Ethics Commission has recommended 37 charges against Governor Mark Sanford (R-SC) over his use of state money to purchase business-class airline tickets to travel to Argentina to see his mistress. The investigation also accuses the governor of violating campaign finance laws by improperly spending $2,940.68 from his campaign’s account.
And finally: The Hammer is back. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay is making a special appearance on the “Dancing With the Stars” finale tonight, where he’ll be dancing the Texas Two-Step with Cheryl Burke. “I’m so excited to dance,” DeLay told Politics Daily.

November 24th, 2009 at 9:02 am“Seventy-nine percent say it is important for President Barack Obama to include health care reform in addressing the nation’s economic crisis.”
This blows the Rot-winger claim that health care reform is holding up work on the economy. The only thing holding up work on the economy are the Rot-wingers, and seventy nine per cent of the voters know it.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:05 amSen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has said that under no circumstances will he vote for a health care reform bill that contains any form of a public option. “I’m going to be stubborn on this,” he said.
The unsaid part: “I have to get as much money as possible from my corporate masters because my a** is going to be voted out next election.”
November 24th, 2009 at 9:07 amIs Senator Lieberman representing the people of Connecticut with his stance against a public option? Or is he obeying his corporate masters? Come on people of Connecticut, this was the person you voted into office. Is he representing you?
November 24th, 2009 at 9:08 amSen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) doesn’t represent the CT – people of Connecticut, but instead he represents the I which stands for the insurance companies headquarted in Connecticut.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:08 amFound this hilariously covered on Countdown last night. Gee, even Ronald Reagan wouldn’t be a Republican under these rules.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:09 amSen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) has said that under no circumstances will he vote for a health care reform bill that contains any form of a public option.
And under no circumstances will anyone vote for you, Droopy Dawg.
Your corporate insurance masters’ hand up your wrinkled, old ass has become visible to the public. We want REFORM, not the same old rhetoric and minimal regulations that industry has enjoyed for decades.

Time to take a hike, Governor.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:14 am34,000 troops entering a war unwinnable by conventional means. Aside from the absurd cost of a troop increase (which, hopefully, will be paid by the wealthy and super-wealthy alike), it’s pointless unless the President sets a timetable for withdrawal. Hell, even benchmarks would be a plus. The concept of a troop surge isn’t necessarily a bad idea; sending the troops in with no plan for withdrawal most certainly is. The additional troops would serve a purpose (training the Afghan national police/army and keeping the waning Taliban insurgency at bay), but if the President doesn’t have a way for them to come home in a year’s time, this is a lost cause.
It’s definitely a good sign that the budget director is finally involved in war planning…something we most certainly did not see during the last administration. I think Bush et.al. would’ve deemed worrying about the oppressive cost of war to be “unpatriotic”. Let the GOP try to argue in favour of expanding the war and AGAINST finding a way to pay for it. Wait, they’ll probably demand that unused stimulus money be used to pay for it. Because everyone knows that wars bring jobs…for lobbyists, arms manufacturers, private military companies, and just about anyone else who can contribute to a politician’s campaign coffers.
I wouldn’t expect many surprises from McChrystal and Eikenberry’s testimony. McChrystal will claim that the war is in dire straits and we will lose if we don’t boost troops. Eikenberry will claim that the war is in dire straits and we’ve already lost and therefore don’t need to boost troop levels.
Lieberman vowing a filabuster against the will of his constituients and towards an outcome that would make him and his wife very wealthy: this is no different than most others vowing to kill reform. Lieberman just wants attention. He’ll vote against it and try to kill it; if and when it eventually passes, the Dems will finally wise up (hopefully) and boot his ass from the caucus. Of course, with that Republican Purity Test making its rounds, Lieberman would fail terribly. He supports Cap and Trade, EFCA, gun control, abortion rights, and a form of amnesty. It’ll be real lonely in the middle of the Senate, Joe.

November 24th, 2009 at 9:18 amAs hidflect pointed out in yesterday’s Lieberman thread Israel has universal health care.
Ninety-five percent of general care hospitals in Israel are public. There is no wait for diagnostic examinations such as MRI and CT or for procedures such as open-heart surgery. Payment for hospitalization is the responsibility of the HMO, and there is no deductible or co-insurance payment required of the patient.

US military involvement in Afghanistan is a loser.
What exactly are the US military’s goals in Afghanistan? How are they accomplished?
The Soviet Union at the height of its military power, brutality and ruthlessness couldn’t win in Afghanistan. This is a lesson the US should learn.

November 24th, 2009 at 9:22 am@17. I just marvel at the fact that society is so enamored with celebrities that on a political site, we throw in Tom Delay’s dancing gig because he used to be a politician.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:23 amIt never was a concern to Bush. So, why now? Why can’t we continue to fund wars with off-budget supplemental spending like the Republicans did for years? Oh, and we should continue funding Bush’s wars by cutting taxes!
I know, I know. Balanced budgets are only required of “tax and spend” liberals. Fiscal conservatives know that the only way to prosperity is through borrowing – and getting the working class to pay the bills.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:25 amExactly USN. I propose a ban to any mention of celebrity stints for politicians. We, as a progressive collective, need to focus on the party, not the party of “NO (but YES to reality TV)”.

November 24th, 2009 at 9:39 amWhat if anything should be done in Afghanistan before departing. Just pack up or are there loose ends to be concerned with?
November 24th, 2009 at 9:39 amI don’t think the GOP realizes how dangerous and inflamatory this ‘Litmus Test’ language is. This whole ‘Purity’ talk is nothing but alarming. I never thought a political party would resort to these tactics. Now, not only if you disagree with them are you a coward, you are not ‘pure’. This opens a whole can of worms.

Well, thinking one has to wait until the President actuality makes his decision as this could be another leak out of the pentagon and the military trying to control the out come.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:42 amThe big thing would be how are we getting out and in how long?
the answer to that will dictate the number of troops going.

Maybe the good people of Oklahoma could take up a collection to fund a grade school education for their clearly low intelligence Senator.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:48 amSTORM, let me be clear about “climate change”.
It is a necessity to put a cap on what we spew into the air and our streams.
Realistically, what is the goal to block all of these proposals? Seriously, I want to hear it from your mouth. Do you want to put a stop to the boogeyman fear that it would slow business and push jobs overseas? Do you want to make sure that America has enough fuel for its businesses? Seriously, why are you dead-set against it?
And don’t give us this “the science behind climate science isn’t real” bull. If that argument was usable, we could counter by saying that you can’t use that exact style of science to argue against “climate science”.
Seriously, we need to control pollution, emphasize higher standards of efficiency, and encourage conservation for both climate-based reasons and production-based reasons.

What a way to get one’s blood pressure rising this morning — these people are just too dumb — they vote, and they haven’t a clue as to why they feel the way they do, or what Palin represents — and their condemnation of Obama is based on nothing he has done or said — it’s all so vague to them, but they are certain!

It may be too little too late, but at least they’re opening the door and letting some sunshine in on the subject.
Why aren’t we doing the same with Cheney & Bush? We’ve got ‘Lizzie Borden Cheney’ running around suggesting Big Dick should be our next President, for God’s sake.
Why can’t we move forward while looking backward? Can’t America walk & chew gum at the same time?
November 24th, 2009 at 9:53 amZim@47, I read that too. it looks like Bush’s ‘Poodle’ is in a lot of trouble. Funny how MSM isn’t reporting this….

Big ass mistake. It’ll take him two years to figure out that this is not a viable, sustainable effort, costing up to a thousand dead soldiers, then we’ll withdraw in time for the 2012 elections.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:00 amBad advice, bad decision.
Does the Republican purity test include opposing: adultery, handing over tax payers money to Wall Street thieves and the Halliburton/KBR war machine, soliciting sex from boys, creating the largest US deficit, just to name a few?

November 24th, 2009 at 10:02 amThe Repugs sure do seem to love lifting strategies from the Nazis don’t they?
The Nazis:
The Nazi Party used popular anti-semitism to gain votes. They blamed poverty, unemployment, and the loss of World War I all on the Jews and the left-wing.
The GOP:
November 24th, 2009 at 10:02 amUsing ‘anti-socialism’ to try to get more votes, blaming poverty, unemployment and the woes of the war in Afghanistan on the Democrats, Obama and those on the left.

November 24th, 2009 at 10:07 amWell, one would think that this ‘purity’ test thing won’t work out too well for the GOP. ‘Purity’ is diametrically opposed to diversity, right?
Genetic diversity gives species the ability to adapt to changing environments, including new pests and diseases and new climatic conditions.
By insisting on ‘purity’ they may be limiting their ability to survive.

Scientific progress depends on accurate and complete data. It also relies on replication. The past couple of days have uncovered some shocking revelations about the baloney practices that pass as sound science about climate change.
In fact, there are no “shocking revelations” beyond the fact that a denier group illegally hacked into Climate Research Unit’s servers and stole thousands of emails and documents, which they have selectively released to support their moronic claims about a conspiracy.
From Real Climate’s response:
The Rabid Right has been screeching about the emails, as if they not only disproved AGW but were a vindication of anything nasty ever said about liberals.

No matter how outrageous the lies the idiots who listen to Fox will believe it and we keep edging closer to an all out civil war because of them.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:54 amI’ve been a long time Obama supporter, based on the hope that maybe he was the one to finally tell the M.I.C. and the chickenhawks where to stuff it. Apparently he’s not; closing Guantanamo, indictment and trials for the Bush administration hot shots, out of Iraq as soon as logistics permit, out of Afghanistan once and for all as soon as logistics allow, shutting down at least 650 foreign military bases, no less than a fifty percent cut in “Defense” appropriations … etc. etc. — all of those hopes have once again flown out the freakin’ window, and once again we’re left with the burgeoning militarism that’s implicit in the (apparently) unstoppable march toward corporatism/fascism, always and invariably to the detriment of We the People.
If I could figure the way and means to get the f**k out of this country once and for all, migrate to a place where something other than money and power are definitive, I’d do it in a heartbeat. I should have done it the last time I considered the option, the day I got my draft notice in 1965, when I damn near was shipped to Vietnam to help save America from the horrible fate that awaits if we don’t spend billions on warmongering (read: profits for the dark side of the force). Now, pushing seventy and, like most of the rest of us alive today, a “victim” of gross political malfeasance, I conclude it’s easier to wait it out, to watch the country collapse, and to hope that next time sanity prevails. That sanity part, though — no way. Humans are immune, susceptible only to its opposite: INsanity.
Sorry Mr. President, but count me out.
November 24th, 2009 at 11:33 amFrugalchariot, yeah because the republicans are doing all they can to help America, right?

Yeah, I understand the Republican menace, have understood it since Nixon was elected in 1968. What I don’t understand is Obama’s apparent refusal to stand up, to spit in the GOP’s collective ugliness and do things right for once — a scenario which does NOT include escalating Afghanistan or staying in Iraq. It doesn’t even have to involve talking to the (R) buggers. It requires having the bollocks to shove them all back into the cave from which they crawled out of some forty years ago. I see none of that, only the wilting in the face of false heat. That’s not what I voted for.

November 24th, 2009 at 12:04 pmGood Morning youngsters, some good posts today….Just flying over as usual with a few words…Credo posted a story on Facebook this morning I found very sad indeed….Blackwater, the cheney sewer gang has been operating in Packistan.(sp)..Their bombing and killing that our country supports has been going on at the usual pace…I knew it ofcourse but many have not…Part of the 4 wars we support including Israels march on their neighbor’s….War councel meetings.? Ah yes, more of the same…34.000 more to go off to war in a foreign country while our country crumbles….No word of a Peace councel….Hummm, how sad..
Was reminded of my last little local stunt in preventing a developer from stealing a neighbors land and cutting his cedar tree’s….There I was with out my gun screaming at the top of my lungs for the entire camp to hear and see..”You can’t cut these trees and build a road here, all this belongs to someone else”….Now here we are, all these war’s belong to someone else Mr President…If you don’t stop the bush madness the wrongs will be assigned to you..You by your actions are going to be named the third termer of the bullshit bush regime…There are no sides in war’s and dieing, no one wins except the coffin builders…
I tend to be very one way in my opinions, wars no. Peace & justice yes…Stop distroying lives in other countries, rebuild America and help other countries..Don’t build bombs, build bridges to Peace….How about it Mr. President, are you striving for a better world for all the children or planning on just staying in the center and watching all sides distroy from with in?…..We need lots of Blessings.

NOW.
What the hell has any of that got to do with Obama ‘behaving as Bush did?’

start by reading “Going Rogue: An American Life” by Sarah Palin.
She didn’t even write it, first of all, nor does she have anything to say anyway. Why would anyone want to “read” something like that?
November 24th, 2009 at 12:38 pmRaw Story is reporting that the Bushies were planning Iraq in February of 2001, one month into’s dymbya’s reign of terror.
This information is coming out during an investigation into Tony Blair’s involvement in the lead up to the war in Iraq.
We won’t prosecute our own – perish the thought of the embarrassment, which is more important than truth finding –
November 24th, 2009 at 12:48 pmbut maybe the Brits have more courage…and humility to find the truth no matter where it leads.
In an address to the nation next Tuesday, President Barack Obama will reportedly announce a decision he has already made on the future of U.S. involvement in Afghanistan. McClatchy reports he has finalized a plan to dispatch some 34,000 additional U.S. troops over the next year.

Too bad Bush II was too busy partying at the University to learn any history.
November 24th, 2009 at 1:46 pmDr. Matt – I got halfway through that video of those pathetic morons waiting in line to see the Quitta from Wasilla. OMG.
The guy in the Steelers jacket could be the spokesmodel for all Palin supporters: “Ah like her cuz she’s purty!”
Frightening.
November 24th, 2009 at 2:10 pmIt may be that understanding, and talking about present pain, requires a certain interval of calm introspection, whilst privately recalling similar pain, or pains, from the past!? IMO, it would not be sufficient to attempt to guage the present pain in terms of these: missed physicians appointments, as yet-unfilled prescriptions, nearly-due unpaid medical bills, or even an interval of suffering because of administratively delayed medical appointments? Although these can serve as good reminders to take care of pain immediately, however, such, normal occurrences are mostly out of the control, of the suffering, person!
Possibly, a high general confusion persists, about pain; such that ordinary, oblique references to one’s pain, can speak only about the pain threshold, rather than becoming apt descriptions of what hurts! IMO, the acquisition of sufficient health care products, and services is left in doubt!?
As a lay person, IMO, the truth is that pain happens in a variety of ways, intensities, and perceptions, and with various, individual pain threshholds!? Helpful reports to doctors and nurses will ask for a guage of pain on a ‘happy face’ scale, between one and ten! Although, IMO, this may fail to shed light on a direct causes of pain, these reports, rather clearly identify two separate categories of feelings which there may be: paresthesia, and dysesthesia.
Paresthesia, IMO, is any abnormal sensation at all which can at all be appreciated; and, dysesthesia refers only to those sensations, which may, indicate that there had existed some more serious, physical impairment, or set of impairments.
November 24th, 2009 at 4:09 pmLieberman says he opposes the public plan because it will have “higher costs” than the private. If that is true, why be fearful of it, since it could not compete and would go out of business in short order as the private insurers scoop up its customers. Lieberman is a demagogue.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:15 pmMr. Duke @88
The govt. has no business being in the health care business. None.
The world would probably be a better place if the government ran health care and the insurance industry fought the wars. Certainly couldn’t be any worse.
