Washington Times falsely claims Boehner was ‘not invited’ to White House state dinner.

Today in the Washington Times, reporters Joseph Curl and Matthew Mosk write a story titled “Top Republican lawmakers not invited to State Dinner.” The article attempts to paint President Obama’s invitation list for tonight’s dinner honoring Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as an example of his partisanship because he did not invite enough Republicans. The article states that House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), like House Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-VA), “didn’t get an invitation to the dinner”:

House Minority Leader John A. Boehner won’t be there; he’s on Thanksgiving break and home in Ohio. His deputy, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, also didn’t get an invitation to the dinner.

However, this simply isn’t true. As Politico reported, Boehner was invited but turned the White House down. Already, Fox News is trying to gin up controversy by reprinting the Washington Times along with the same error.

  1. EnnuiDivine says:

Since when is the Washington Times to be considered “objective journalism”? It was founded with the explicit purpose of being the conservative alternative to the “liberal” Washington Post. It still running by the freakin’ Unification Church.

Figures that FoxNews would rely so heavily on it.

  2. EnnuiDivine says:

Oh, and this unmitigated crap was one of the top stories on the Google News page. Can’t wait til Rupert decides to yank all News Corp items from Google…

  3. Pilotshark says:

I see this is how fox will get around mudocs (spelling) no mistake clause they will simple just use others misleading quotes and film.

  4. Shayne says:

Boehner can’t stay sober long enough to go to a state dinner.

  5. Purple State says:

To be fair, the Washington Times conveniently omitted any mention that Boenher did or did not get an invitation, as it appears the main focus of the article was John McCain.

However, it is convenient to know that he was the second Republican lawmaker mentioned chronologically in the article. Ergo, by default, the article is meant to hint that Boehner did not get an invite.

Not exactly a Fox News “lie”, but it’s a perpetuation of an incorrect spin.

  6. Purple State says:

My guess is that Boehner would probably be lost amongst the pumpkin pie at the dinner anyways.

  7. dixie blood says:

The Washington Times is a Moonie, yellow-journalism, rag. Enough said.

  8. tom says:

It was really rude of President Obama to schedule that dinner for the same time as Little Cryin’ Johnny’s standing tanning salon appointment.

  9. muzz says:

oh for Crhist’s sake – when will this BS end? It’s getting ridiculous. Also, Faux sure is changing there ways, aren’t they – NOT!

I thought people were going to be disciplined at Faux News for on air inaccuracies. I guess that was just for yesterday.

  12. roboticus says:

Also, Faux sure is changing there ways, aren’t they – NOT!

There’s a difference between lying and accurately repeating the lies of others (and calling it “reporting”). That’s a loophole you can be certain Fox “News” will be exploiting.

  13. P.D. says:

LOL! THIS is a story? Poor Boner wasn’t invited? I guess when Bush and his cronies ditched and abused the Dems that wasn’t a hot topic, but this? Was John’s feelings hurt? Did he cry and stamp his feet? What a bunch of girly-men.

  14. Constant Weader says:

As Ben Ambruster has already proved, anything is possible in the supernatural world of the right — like 193% of Americans favoring a Republican presidential candidate. A little thing like the leaders of the Party of No saying “no” to a White House invitation & then forgetting they put the fancy invitation in the circular file is nothing. The Washington Times & Fox do not report on the natural universe. Oh, and they fire reporters who do.

  15. Wayne A. Schneider says:

So, if this story makes it on the air like this, who gets fired?

  16. USNclerk says:

Is it so hard to ask these guys whether or not they got invited?

  17. Dr. Hussein Matt says:

Faux is wrong yet again. Shocking. Who gets fired now? Heck, by next week the entire staff will be sh*t canned at this rate.

  18. raynman says:

When I was at college, we had a person who wrote for a conservative rag (and who is now a semi-famous conservative author) on campus who we created a nom de plume which was also a clever play on his name.

I won’t mention this author’s name (should be easy to figure out), but I think it’s an appropriate title for the entire tone of what the conservative meme is in the media: Distort D’New-sa

  19. sscncturn64 says:

Boehner probably has an appointment at his tanning salon anyway.

  20. USNclerk says:

Interesting, you’d think there’d at least be a VDT floating around with all the FOX bashing going on.

  25. Zimzone says:

Boner declined because he thought Indians shouldn’t be invited to the White House, and should stay on the Reservation.

  26. Chyron HR says:

A White House dinner? Why are these Republicans lining up for a Socialist Big Government handout like that? Can’t Boner and Can’tor feed themselves without leeching off of the hard-working American taxpayers?

  30. dbadass says:

Are individuals free to choose death with dignity in your freedom pool? Something tells me it is time for “adult swim”

  31. Hoodathunk says:

Does this mean the White House now has super secret guest lists to its dinner functions?

Or that the Times was too lazy to check?

    USNclerk says:

@1. So the Washington Post is a liberal newspaper? Huh, and here I was reading it because it seemed unbiased. Who woulda thunk? :)

Oh yeah. It’s so liberal they have George Will AND Charles Krauthammer as columnists! In all seriousness, most metropolitan area newspapers have a slight left-lean to their editorial boards, due to the demographics they serve. On news reporting, though, the Post is pretty damn unbiased.

  37. P.D. says:

Chyron@34, Yeah. People like OSTL would be afraid ‘It would change the complextion of the club.’

  38. Hoodathunk says:

Now the Republicans are a poisonous dangerous chemical with noxious hazardous properties.

    Sounds about right.

  39. ralph the wonder llama says:

  41. mary lacewing says:

Chlorination is inferior water treatment on at least two counts.

    1. Although it has greatly lowered infectious waterborne diseases in the U.S. and Canada, chlorination fails against a variety of water problems including parasites and can seriously harm people who use the water.

    2. Its cost is unnecessarily high.

Yup – that about wraps up the righties-as-chlorine analogy!

  42. EnnuiDivine says:

OTSL admits it: conservatives are a metabolic poison, responsible for the deaths of thousands.

  43. zxbe says:

The thing about these sorts of errors is the damage they do. Sure, the Times could (and probably will) issue a retraction: buried deep inside in some small box. But does that really make up for the damage caused by the initial article? Hardly.

Same with Fox. For all their hype about “firing” people, the damage is already done. They’re feeding exactly what the right-wing wants to hear and helping to steer the dialog, not just reporting on what is taking place.

  44. Purple State says:

    great analogy, olby sucks.

but why is it you guys are rejecting those who are capable of cleaning the pool?

you really want to call ronald reagan a brat?

  45. Hoodathunk says:

Maybe now we can get the EPA or FDA or OSHA to require that Republicans be fitted with childproof lids and wear large clear labels stating the hazardous nature of the contents.

  46. Marie says:

    What? Fox mislead the public??

Fox is supposed to FIRE people who don’t tell the truth!

Integrity of reporting is their mission isn’t it?

  47. USNclerk says:

@46, and what are you battling?

  48. Hoodathunk says:

This battle is about courage and commitment.

And I am hoping they will have those commitment papers finalized real soon.

  49. dbadass says:

Go ahead and vote me down urinators. This battle is about courage and commitment. We have it. You don’t.

Well as you know I have a no vote down policy so maybe we should just move on to the second aspect of this. Are you prepared to support this bold thesis with any sort of cogent argument? Yes or no courage boy?

  50. Pilotshark says:

    Poor Jeffy.

  58. USNclerk says:

@59, either that, or he’s gutless and incoherent. And if that’s the case, OSTL, don’t let me catch you talking about courage again, you obviously lack the courage to make a simple reply.

  59. P.D. says:

@60. So, you are the victim now? Do you want a tissue? Maybe you should leave if you can’t handle us Big Bad ‘Liberals’

  60. tom says:

OSTL says: “It helps if you look at America as a giant swimming pool of freedom”

Actually, OSTL, a better analogy is to look at America as a giant gene pool. You and your FoxSnooze, radio rant-jockeys and republican politicians are in the shallow end.

  69. ralph the wonder llama says:

    OSTL says:

Go ahead and vote me down urinators. This battle is about courage and commitment.

That’s funny… I thought it was about the best ways to move the nation forward. That’s what most Democrats are focused on.

But since Republicans seem to think the battle is about “courage and commitment”, neither of which have anything to do directly with intelligence and insight, that explains why their efforts are so often concentrated on boisterous opposition and protests, rather than on creative and effective solutions.

  70. dbadass says:

Hey attention whore. Can we spot playing this made up either or game? “secular atheism”?

  71. ralph the wonder llama says:

“He just throws out random assertions which he uses to fool himself into thinking that he (and right-wingers in general) have some sort of special virtue unavailable to humans.”

Thanks, shoeless. That’s the perfect description of what I refer to as Trollette’s Syndrome. Most cases of this disease are benign though aggravating. OSTL has progressed to the later stages of this malady, however, which are most often fatal.

His bouts of magical thinking and mindless babbling are increasing in frequency. They will soon lead to a total shut-down of his CNS and loss of autonomic functions. Unfortunately, Trollette’s Syndrome is considered a pre-existing condition and not covered by most private insurance plans.

We should all pray for OSTL…pray that he expires soon and as painlessly as possible.

  79. DRxJ says:

Holy crap, when did Jeffy Bovine (admirer and secretly desires Mr. Olbermann) swim further off the deep end?

  80. Cats says:

You are making the assumption that I have to….

  121. dbadass says:

    trollspotter, dbadass, same loser

    wrong again…

I can’t speak for dbadass but I can see where cleaning fish (literally) or gutting trolls (figuratively) would provide a personal sense of accomplishment. It is a good thing to have a purpose in life, beyond academic achievement.

  123. smidget says:

I would think that about the only thing you’d accomplish from gutting fish all day is successfully repulsing your spouse.

Why spend $50,000 for one degree, let alone three, just to gut fish? If you want a sense of accomplishment, try Habitat for Humanity instead of participating in an environmentally catastrophic industry like the fishing trade.

  124. smidget says:

    Oh, forgot to add:

Both options, however, are better than batting at trolls. :)

  125. Mr.Duke says:

Were Bill Ayers and Rev. Wright invited, too?

    ——-
What if part of what you do is consult on sustainability. Sea based protein is a reality. Educating the consumer is the issue…

  127. dbadass says:

There is very little gutting involved. It is all about skilled knifemenship and experience….

  128. DemMo says:

    “the same ‘error’??!! HA!

  129. dannylauve says:

My guess is that the mail guy couldn’t find Boehner to deliver the invitation, he was standing too close to the paneling and just blended in like a chameleon. As for Cantor, he just didn’t get invited cause’ he’s a d*ck

  130. lapdogs says:

So FAUX’s claim that they will fire anybody that report false news lasted all of ONE DAY (if that)?

I was giving them 10 minutes to report something falsely.

  131. Chicano2nd says:

Already, Fox News is trying to gin up controversy by reprinting the Washington Times along with the same error.

The same error? Tell it like it is…the same LIE!
