Several charities in the Houston area are checking the immigration status of needy families before giving out toys this holiday season. The charities claim that given the jump in demand this year — over 30,000 children have registered with the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program, an increase of over 20 percent from last year — they want to be “good stewards” and get the donations to people who are in the country legally. From the Houston Chronicle:
In a year when more families than ever have asked for help, several programs providing Christmas gifts for needy children require at least one member of the household to be a U.S. citizen. Others ask for proof of income or rely on churches and schools to suggest recipients.
The Salvation Army and a charity affiliated with the Houston Fire Department are among those that consider immigration status, asking for birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children. [...]
The Outreach Program requires parents to show photo identification and birth certificates or Social Security cards for the children. [The Outreach Program's Lorugene] Young said she makes an exception if parents can show they have applied for legal status or that a child is enrolled in school.
this country is repugnant.

I guess those without proper documentation are getting the metaphorical lump of coal, though even a lump of coal would be an improvement. It could be used to provide a little heat.

December 1st, 2009 at 1:29 pmWow, just because somebody doesn’t have the right papers, that’s reason enough for these good “christians” to deny a child a toy?
Somehow, I don’t think that Christ would be very impressed with these guys.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:30 pmPurple@5, I gotcha. Because it seems to be working. A troll free site, is a happy site.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:30 pmJesus also checked the immigration status of the sick and hungry before he took care of them…..right?
December 1st, 2009 at 1:32 pmI thought Christmas was about Generousity and love? Where is the outrage from the Religious Right? Oh, what am I thinking. They probably thought this up.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:32 pmIf the Salvation Army is doing this in Houston, I suggest they provide a “hit rate”–a percentage of those who were turned down for suspect that they were illegal immigrants.
If that percentage is low, then they have no justification for this paranoia. For crying out loud, what happened to the “spirit of giving”?
December 1st, 2009 at 1:33 pm.
… Because only American families are truly “NEEDY”, YES?
um, in case people haven’t noticed, immigrant families are desperately in “need” of a country to call their own.

December 1st, 2009 at 1:33 pmHow very Christian of the Salvation Army.
Perhaps they ought to check if there are any homosexuals living in the home as well.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:33 pmBut, but, but we’re a Christian nation, right? Bullshit!!!
Little kids don’t know a border from a bell. All they want is a toy to play with.

December 1st, 2009 at 1:34 pmHow about this, let’s not give any aid to anyone that isn’t directly a descendant of a Native American Tribe. After all are we all just trespassing on their lands?
It was really disgusting reading the posts in the Houston Chronicle on this article. I half way expected to see the idea that we institute camps for all illegals and work towards some final solution….too many think that is what Jesus would do from their comments.

When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.
But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds returned, demanding to see Joseph and Mary’s green cards…When they could not produce them, they were stoned to death and the infant was sold into slavery.

December 1st, 2009 at 1:45 pmThe reality is that private charities can give to whomever they want to. However, if they discriminate in any way, this discrimination should be disclosed so that potential donors can factor this into their giving decisions. Some donors would be put off by discrimination against undocumented residents (or anybody else) — others might be hesitant to give to any charity that DIDN’T screen for legal status (of course, these people probably wouldn’t want their money going to “furriners” of any kind).
I wouldn’t give to a charity that screened — not just for humanitarian reasons, but for practical ones. I look at it this way — every dollar that’s spent screening for income level, legal status, etc. is a dollar that’s not going to the people who need it. The best charities are the ones with the least overhead.
If I lived in Houston, the Salvation Army wouldn’t be getting anything from me this year.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:47 pmWere Mary and Joseph in Palestine legally? I don’t recall anything in the gospels about them showing their birth certificates to anyone.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:48 pmI can’t give money to the Salvation Army pan handlers any more. Several years ago we found out they were using those donations to lobby the Congress to exempt “faith”-based organizations from federal rules about non-discrimination. They deign to give charity to those they hate, but they won’t hire them to work at their charities. We need a stronger secular charity movement in this country to rescue those in need from the growing religious intolerance.

December 1st, 2009 at 1:54 pmThese “christians” don’t read their Bible because it specifically says to be kind to the foreigners living among you and treat them fairly.
Maybe they use the Bible as a prop the way they use the pocket-size Constitutions they wave around while they ignore and/or distort its’ content to suit their purposes.
I believe they do. They have to in order to mistreat/deprive any child of such simple material things.
I’ve been donating weekly to the Salvation Army. After reading this I’m contacting my local organization to see whether they have the same policies. If they do, they’ve received their last cent from me. I’ll just donate to our local Toys for Tots Program, or some other organization.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:55 pmThe Salvation Army has always been a ‘quasi-military’ organization. That being said, they have always stood on a principle of helping the poor and needy get what they need to survive or to make their lives better by giving a helping hand. However, the S.A. has degenerated into something that would be barely recognizable by Robert & Claire Booth (the founders). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Salvation_Army
I remember the S.A. when it did help anyone in need–no matter what. They helped me when I needed it and I used to give to the S.A. because I thought they did a lot of good.
This is no longer the case, I give whatever I can to those who need either on my own or through a church deacon that I trust.
For any organization that purports to help the needy, then the Salvation Army has completely disregarded the basic idea of charity–to help anyone that needs help.
I would say that the S.A. has been “Texinated“, but that would be incorrect–they’ve just gone corporate, mainstream and political.
A sad, sad situation to be certain.
December 1st, 2009 at 1:56 pmIt’s called ‘The SALVATION Army’. Will they have to change their name? This seems very ‘un-Christian’ to me.

Some of the kindest, gentlest and most “Christian” folks I know these days are atheists and agnostics.

There’s a difference between screening based on need and screening based on arbitrary political whims. I’d argue that every dollar that’s spent checking income level – i.e. to determine whether people requesting assistance are actually in need of assistance – saves money and resources from being wasted on scammers instead of those truly in need.
This, on the other hand, is knee-jerk bigotry. I have to wonder if this type of profiling doesn’t violate anti-discrimination laws at the state or federal level.

This kind of ugly crap is the main reason why I’m an atheist.
Annie… as an atheist I felt the same way – It wasn’t til I believed that I realized you should never judge a religion by it’s followers – it’s another form of bigotry… afterall, I believe.. and I’m a very nice, friendly, pacifistic, forgiving and intelligent person (and don’t forget humble!). Matter of fact.. once I got past the bigotry of it.. I realized there’s many of us.. kind and gentle believers – the bad apples are the only ones that get attention.
While I truly don’t care to argue religion.. because once I found belief it simply wasn’t an issue to me like it once was. It would be like arguing if the sun exists for me.. I just wish that people wouldn’t use Republicans as symbols of Christianity — it is honestly no different than using Terrorists as symbols of Islamic belief.. it’s bigotry.
The thing with stereotypes is – if every single person minus even one in a group acted in such a way.. and you judge them all to be that way — you are still wrong.
December 1st, 2009 at 2:16 pmTombaker, you are so right.
Cafeteria “Christians” like the holy roller trolls on this blog just pick and choose what suits their political philosophy for the moment.
Jesus condemned the juridical and legalistic games of the Pharisees, the spiritual descendents of whom may be found in evangelical churches throughout the land, spewing their nonsense and playing their games, without a thought to actually
taking the words and examples of Jesus to heart.
It’s all total crap today, run by a bunch of charlatans, psychopaths and crooks, all out for power and wealth.
The fact that none of the “Christian” leadership came out in favor of making health care more accessible to the uninsured and the poor shows their total disconnect from the words and examples of Jesus.
In short, “Christianity” today is an abomination.
December 1st, 2009 at 2:17 pmApparently, ever since Teh Lord said so:
I hadn’t read the passage myself, but some dummy posted it on a blog, so now I know.
December 1st, 2009 at 2:20 pmI stopped giving to corporate ‘charities’ years ago. Red Cross, S.A., United Way, BSA, GSA, as nauseum all have overhead margins that are completely unacceptable. They’ve become similar to the US Chamber of Commerce, just less visible. The idea of some charity exec making millions a year off donations, as in the Red Cross scandal some years ago, sealed the deal.
Now I just observe people and their actions during the year. Shortly before Christmas, I leave anonymous gifts, food or cash to those I believe deserve it. For example, one young woman who is intellectually disabled feeds feral cats during our harsh winter months. She probably spends $20.00 / week on cat food. Last year I left 5 50 lb. bags of cat food on her front steps. She has no idea of who I am, nor do I intend to tell her.
Another family down the street works hard, cares for the children admirably, but are always broke. Both parents work part time jobs. I slipped an envelope with a $100 bill under the front door 2 days before Christmas. I saw 2 of the kids around New Years wearing new winter coats. I can’t be sure if it was due to my contribution or not; it doesn’t matter.
Take it upon yourself to be Santa. It’s a wonderful feeling, it makes the holidays even more special and it’s the right thing to do.

okie dokie
It’s been a long standing view of mine, and a statement I make to people all the time..
‘any dealing with an authority figure is a bad one’
Usually conflict with authority ends up making you a martyr.. and I wouldn’t recommend such behavior. Thus, as a rule.. avoid it. On the other hand, when a ruler becomes corrupt and tyrannical there are times when everyone has a responsibility to rise up. I’m positive there’s scripture to support such a thing as well.. one thing about life is – all generalizations are false.. including that one. The Bible advises respecting authority.. and I’ve learned that to be a good rule of thumb.. but it by no means is the case always.
It’s good to respect your employer, your parents, your president/king, etc… but — just like thou shalt not kill.. there’s clear exceptions to even a good rule.

You can overwhelm other charities with donations. There are a lot of other charities that are local and have no overhead with the Christmas gifts. If the SA has trouble raising funds in other areas because of the Houston chapter, then the national organization can take corrective action.
December 1st, 2009 at 5:04 pmCorrect me if I’m wrong…but the Salvation Army is supposed to be a Christian organization, is it not?
Would someone be so kind as to quote the chapter and verse from the New Testament in which Jesus of Nazareth instructed his followers to inquire after a person’s nationality and/or political affiliation before providing charity? For some inexplicable reason, I can’t remember that Jesus ever advocated anything of the kind…
I realize that the Salvation Army may have reason to be concerned that they might not have the resources to provide for as many families as they have in years past — the economic crisis has very likely had a negative impact on the amount of donations they’ve received and increased the number of needy families — but that doesn’t automatically give them the right to discriminate against people based on a political issue since this conflicts with the religious beliefs which they claim to support. I for one don’t think either Jesus of Nazareth or Paul the Apostle would approve…and if memory serves, they are more or less considered the supreme authorities when it comes to matters of Christian ethics.

It would also suggest that all of our Founding Fathers likewise belong in Hell since they defied the British Crown in order to establish the United States as an independent nation. (It would explain the reason why they believed it imperative to make Freedom Of Religion part of our laws, wouldn’t it?) Furthermore, if they were disobeying God by disputing the authority of King George III (whose official title was Defender of the Faith and whose motto was “Dieu Et Mon Droit”), then one could make the argument that the nation which Founding Fathers created in the process is not worthy of being sanctioned by God as so many Republicans try to claim it is. So much for “In God We Trust” and “One Nation Under God”, hmmmmmmmm?

As much as I agree that the actions in this news item are totally reprehensible, and as much as the Native Americans may want the Europeans to go away,
Your name leads me to believe that you may have some Spanish (European) ancestry.
December 1st, 2009 at 8:34 pmYeah! You are right. Somewhere along the the line, there is European blood. That is why I can say what I do sometimes. It is out of frustration. There are those I would say, stay. You are a decent human being that is showing resilency despite the rotteness around you. Spanish surname which you don’t know, by the way, does not mean adherence to European ways, however! That was a lucky guess though. Nothing in the word Chicano has anything to do with anything European!
December 1st, 2009 at 8:54 pmPerhaps someone in the area could organize a toy drive of their own, find out who hit SA’s naughty (not one of us) list and distribute toys to those children.
Our charity should not be stopped because this organization wishes to be Scrooge like. This is supposed to be the season of celebration of the birth of Christ. Somehow I don’t think he’d be very pleased about limiting his love and kindness only to citizens.
I understand that there is an increase of 20 percent or so in families in need. I would assume that includes a great deal of regular plain ol’ white folk. Not all poor folks are illegals, although I am sure there is a healthy number of them too. With unemployment rates as high as they are, the serious increase in families on food stamps, the housing crisis. It is one tough world out there.
December 1st, 2009 at 9:43 pmThe Christianity of this is simply staggering!
December 1st, 2009 at 10:13 pmYou can’t ignore the satanists. They have a stranglehold on stupid. While crying that they are christian, their polices show clearly that they have no knowledge of christianty.
They are strictly satanists. Why christians cannot see this totally eludes me. These people are pure undiluted evil. They most resemble the radical Islamic nitwits. Their positions on everything show that they would support al Queda in a hot flash.
These people don’t support anything christian, why are they so gutless that they cannot combine with the evil in the world like normal satanists?
December 1st, 2009 at 10:36 pmFirst off, that’s only quoting Romans 13: 1-2.
Secondly, what does that say about all those “christians” who are rebeling against President Obama? If God did not establish Obama as authority, then the Bible is wrong! If, then, Obama says we should provide health care to all of our fellow man, to rebel against that is to rebel against God.
Looks to me like a lot of “christians” have brought judgment down upon themselves.
December 1st, 2009 at 10:49 pmBriseadh na Faire,
Awe come on…
… Of course it’s not a Theocratic Empire when it’s American X-tians quoting Scripture to defend their Politics, YES?
What I end up suggesting to these fellas is to look at Afghanistan and the Taliban. They condemn and outlaw their politics through dogma just the same. Or look at Iran, if they think Afghanistan is too blunt of an example. Just two of a few of which American Evilgelical X-tians imitate.
I guess there are radicals who might accuse Christ of being a “rebel” for talking back to the Pharisees and Scribes, NO? And oh…
December 2nd, 2009 at 12:55 am… How He manhandled those “BANKERS” cashing in on His Father’s Good Name, too, YES?
#100 Crazy Cat Lady,
I’m lucky enough to live in a city where the homeless sell newspapers for a living. http://www.realchangenews.org/
However, I yet have to see a Church lead up an anti-war rally…
… But I have seen Churches sponsor Pro-life rallies, if that’s a concession.

December 2nd, 2009 at 5:38 amWWJD. Isn’t it ironic that on a day when all of Christendom is celebrating the birth of our savoir, that there are some who would use it as a punishment of innocent children? I am appalled to hear such meanness, and I am horrified that the leaders of all the major Christian denominations are silent on this issue. What does this say about us as a community and taking up the cause of good-will and fairness?
December 2nd, 2009 at 12:49 pmWhat does this say about America, a place where those in need come to find comfort and aid only to be handed a big bunch of nothing. I find it strange that the US Federal government has no problem with illegal immigration; they are unwilling to ship out the 40 Million illegals that live here. Yet, are so-called charities will not give an impoverished child a stinking toy at Christmas because of their illegal status. Last I heard Jesus and all the prophets and saints didn’t cure the sick, lame and blind conditionally based on their legal status. If you are going to love your neighbor then you must love them all. If, you are going to be a charity then you must be charitable to all. Be ashamed Salvation Army and those that follow there discriminating ways, the eye of the Lord is not blind to anyone in distress and a terrible judgment will befall those that cannot differentiate between right and wrong.
However, it’s perfectly alright to hire them to ring bells and ask for donations in front of the grocery store. I’m shocked that I’m shocked by this story because that sort of thinking is exactly what I expect from self-righteous religious types.
December 2nd, 2009 at 1:55 pmGood for the Salvation Army. I gave a donation today. If illegals want charity have them go back to their country.
