Moments ago, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) announced that he is prepared to vote against the Senate health care bill in light of the recent decision to strip the public option and the Medicare buy-in provision from the legislation. Appearing on Fox Business’ Cavuto, Sanders said he’s “struggling with this,” but is inclined to vote against:
I’m struggling with this. As of this point, I’m not voting for the bill. … I’m going to do my best to make this bill a better bill, a bill that I can vote for, but I’ve indicated both to the White House and the Democratic leadership that my vote is not secure at this point. And here is the reason. When the public option was withdrawn, because of Lieberman’s action, what I worry about is how do you control escalating health care costs?
Watch it:
Sanders is the only member of the Democratic caucus to publicly oppose the Senate legislation, and it’s unclear if he would still vote for cloture but oppose the final bill. Still, Sanders’ objections raise new doubts about whether Reid has the votes to file cloture on the bill tomorrow and pass it before Christmas.
They’re letting the Republicans slowly take down the health care bill by trying to compromise on it. They only want it gone. I don’t know why they’re trying to bargain with these deceitful people
December 16th, 2009 at 7:21 pmI can’t say I blame him. He’s frustrated and angry at the republicans and thier tactics. He wants to give the people, not the republicans what they want.
Once again, I’ll say it: The republicans are going to regret this day.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:25 pmWELL WELL WELL, someone with a spine.
Pssst. hey democrat, you might wanna take note-
December 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pmI’m bitter about it, but…if we can pass something, I’d hold out hope it leads to something better.
That being said, if nothing comes to fruition with the Copenhagen meetings, I’m going to demand that all Congressmen grow a pair.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pm#2 I don’t agree Skywatch. Here we are at the goal line and it’s 1 Senate Dem and 2 Senate Independents that are the last hurdles to getting a HCR Senate bill passed.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:29 pmOh man. We’ve been screwed over. Again.
Welcome to the United States of America, Inc. – for the Corporations, by the Corporations and of the Corporations.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:30 pmBernie, you mean you care more about the American People than you do about the insurance lobby? I’m Shocked! There ARE still some human’s left in the senate!
December 16th, 2009 at 7:31 pmStand firm Mr. Sanders – you are against this bill for the correct reasons, Joe Lieberman is not! We can’t give the insurance companies a windfall by forcing people to buy insurance from people that will continue to raise the rates and deny claims.
I don’t know why the Democrats think it will make them popular when a most of folks that can’t afford insurance now are going to be forced to buy insurance with money they don’t have. It’s just stupidity!!
December 16th, 2009 at 7:32 pmDon’t give me a vote down just because I said ‘hey democrat(s) take note’. OK, so I left off an ‘S’ – well, e-x-c-u-s-e me!
Look pal, the democrats (and I’m talking politician democrats) are a bunch of spineless pussies. They obviously care more about the corporate machine than about you or I. Get a grip pal. Reality is smacking you over the head right now.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:35 pmThat’s weird… out of the first seven posters, five of them are unfamiliar screen names…
Annie, Purple State, do you recognize these folks?
December 16th, 2009 at 7:38 pmIf Lieberman can hold the bill hostage then Sanders is doing the same. He should extract just as much as Lieberman did on this bill. I hope he stands firm. BTW-he should also be in the media talking about how much the lobbyists are spending to influence this legislation. This should include naming names and then watch the cockroaches scurry.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:39 pmTo a certain extent, I agree with you BFD. Both sides, Democratic and republican forgot about the ones who brought them to the dance, we the taxpayers, in favor of those who are paying them to be whores, the health insurance industry and big pharma.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:40 pmThank you Bernie!!! thank you for not letting the something become the enemy of the good! Thank you for standing up for what is right!!!
People forget that Medicare was was the compromise – the compromise that was the foot in the door to single payer… it was designed an implemented to be modified ever decade or so and the age lowered so that now it was supposed to be single payer.
My Dad always said “Do it right or don’t do it at all”!!! you don’t build a skyscraper out of toothpicks because that is all you could get – that is more dangerous than not building it at all
That you Bernie!!!!
December 16th, 2009 at 7:43 pmYeah, I found that odd too, ralph…
I’d like to hear from these guys how killing this bill will ease passage of FURTHER reforms next time?
December 16th, 2009 at 7:43 pmLook this thing is getting disgusting…..any liberal who could vote for this bill should be ashamed of themselves.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:43 pmhere’s what you do….take each item seperately…..like portability…or pre existing conditions….then each will sink or swim on it’s own merits. And will expose the obstructionists over and over….and the “insuro dems” will be on exhibition.
we’ll get what we can and move on….
Then we can start on the rest….

We need to jut let the health reform bill die and pin the death of it squarely on the GOParty of NO and Joe LIEberman. When the shite hits the fan, let’s put the blame where it REALLY belongs. EVERY BLASTED one of the GOPqrty of NO and Joe LIEberman. NO WHERE ELSE!
December 16th, 2009 at 7:44 pmThere is nothing in the bill that can really HELP the little guy. And to allow the Insurance industries to rake in everybody will NOT cause them to reform. It will continue to be SAME ol SAME ol!
I still have to see what the final product is, the jury is out and it’s not looking good, but we need the final verdict.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:44 pmconservative guy says:
This is definitely good news. I applaud the Republicans for doing everything in their power to kill this bill.
Don’t come crying here when the lack of health care kills you or someone you care about.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:47 pmHey Ralph!
Long time my friend. You actually know me under a different handle. Unfortunately, a while back, TP decided that my fingers were being a wee little crass with the words they typed – and they kicked me off. Hell, they wouldn’t even allow me to say goodbye to all of you. (I was so pissed off at TP Ralph, that I wasn’t ever going to come back. They let some troll spout his BS – but when I put down what I felt was needed to be said, well, I was banished! I will try to keep control of my anger issues TP :)
Well, I swore I wouldn’t come back – but with what’s going on with the insurance industry take-over of the health care bill… well, I just had to see what you all were saying.
So how are the kids? lol
December 16th, 2009 at 7:47 pmHi conservative guy.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:48 pmSo about that chat….
belaccifer lacca says:

Medicare was good and it has yet to be reformed the way it was intended… over 40 years have passed…
Don’t pass crap hoping you can make lunch out of it
December 16th, 2009 at 7:49 pmconservative guy – the GOP could have added positive things to the bill – they are destroying this system of gov’t and it is there fault this country is a laughing stock around the world

December 16th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
More to the point, how is killing this bill going to ease passage of FURTHER reforms down the road???
December 16th, 2009 at 7:50 pmConservative jerk is happy because everyone is pissed.
Hey, are you a cop?
December 16th, 2009 at 7:51 pmbelaccifer lacca says
I don’t think killing this bill will make anything easier. In a way, I’m feeling frustrated by the tactics of the republicans in the Senate, and its left me bitter and angry. Mostly at the obstructionist republicans, but also somewhat at the Democrats who are letting them get away with it.
This bill isn’t what we want. But as it has already been well pointed out, starting out with some kind of groundwork now may make changes in the future somewhat easier. As it stands right now, with the crop of ignorant republicans that we currently have in the Senate I can’t see this bill being or getting any better than it is. This saddens me, and angers me more than you know, but we have to start somewhere.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:51 pmtrevinla says:
So you would have supported killing Medicare until we got full single payer?
And you think that would have happened by now?
Why didn’t it, I wonder?
Again, the phrase is ‘don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.’ and it means the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you were saying.
We could have had something like this deal in 1974 but the LEFT killed it hoping for SINGLE PAYER then… you tell me how that worked out.
Thanks.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:53 pmThis saddens me, and angers me more than you know, but we have to start somewhere.

What was your previous handle?
December 16th, 2009 at 7:56 pmWithout a public option, the bill is little more than a giveaway to the insurance industry. It saddens me to have to hope that the bill dies, since its death will be used by the media and by a gleeful G.O.P. to trumpet word that the Obama Administration’s back is broken. Still, a sow’s ear is a sow’s ear.
As for Lieberman, he is probably getting rewarded so handsomely by his friends in the health and insurance industries that he doesn’t really care whether progressives are able to find someone to unseat him in 2012.
December 16th, 2009 at 7:59 pmwell belaccifer, I don’t know if this might be a wee bit hard for you to understand, but as I said, I was banished by TP. ( …and now, I’ll be banished again. No big. At least this time I will get a chance to wish you all good luck in everything you do in life. Keep up the good fight all. I’ve been off the grid lately. I kind of like it there.)
Anyway belaccifer, RTWL said something about 7 out of the first 12 post were by people he never heard of. So I wanted him to know I am a friendly.
Well, I’m about to be banished again – so good luck all. I miss you.

December 16th, 2009 at 8:00 pmWell, I’m about to be banished again

What then?
Thanks.

December 16th, 2009 at 8:04 pmbelaccifer lacca says:

The bill is not the product of negotiations between the senate factions. The Medicare buy-in was a compromise position and that was taken away by Lieberman. This is the Lieberman bill. Unless there are some changes in the bill, then the mandate without choice is little more than a billions of dollars giveaway to the insurance companies.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:04 pmWell, I’m not being banished, but I do have to go eat dinner. Be back later.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:05 pm…and when (since you monitor MY EVERY WORD ) did I say ANYTHING about killing the bill? screw you. I said the democrats need to be less pussish.

December 16th, 2009 at 8:06 pmbelaccifer lacca says:

No – Medicare was good and it should have passed but we haven’t been able to reform it… Medicare was good as passed so we haven;t suffered but this is NOT good and we will not be able to change it. They are making it illegal for you to not give your hard earned money to profit machines that only make money by NOT doing what they were paid to do!!! That alone is worth not passing this bill
December 16th, 2009 at 8:06 pmI hope you’re right, tom… but that means coming back to this once again and I just do not think that the next bill will be any stronger… I don’t.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:06 pmVDT lurking…
December 16th, 2009 at 8:06 pmBernie’s a man of integrity. The White House is trying to make deals with the other side but the simple fact is, we want something that works, and they do not. There is no compromise to be had. If it works, we are happy, If it does not work, they are happy. There is no middle ground. Why does the White House forget who put them there? When you couple that with the fact that you are trying to bargain with a li@r like Joe Lieberman, who in their right mind would expect this to work? Being progressive is not supposed to mean your passive or 5tupid, but that’s how it looks
December 16th, 2009 at 8:07 pmwhat really kills me is that the sharks that are in the water KNOW that we are pussy’s and they keep using the same playbook to kick our asses.

I didn’t say you were going to kill the bill or were in favor of killing the bill, did I?

let me rephrase… if the bill DIES how does that make passing a STRONGER one next time easier?
Please monitor my words more carefully…

by “don’t let the something be the enemy of the good” I mean, don’t let your desire to claim victory stop you from fighting to get that victory. the white wants to say “we have passed health insurance reform” so bad that if they passed a bill that simply stated “‘Health’ must always be capitalized when written” then they would claim “we have passed health insurance reform”
so – don’t let the something be the enemy of the good!

Think about it, seriously…
pass bill.
enable improvements to bill in reconciliation.
see baggers screech.
trouble comes in trying to do that without everyone on the left freaking out and running for the hills, which is exactly what’s happening right now.

December 16th, 2009 at 8:15 pmHi, AmericasBack.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:17 pmWow, something like 300 representatives and senators, all democrats supported single payer, then the public option and now what we have before us.
It was all stopped by the republicans and 4 democrats and one independant, yet you all blame all democrats.
perspective is important here.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:20 pmHey Zooey! I hope you’ve been well. Me doing Okaydokay (same shit, different fly’s)

Piece of Poo says:
Right, sorry. I apologize for ruffling your feathers but not for asking what your plan is when this bill fails, sorry.
That’s why I clarified here (let me put it in bold for you)
Sorry I used an active verb, truly. I did not want to accuse you of single-handedly bringing down reform. I did wand to know what you imagine will happen if nothing happens this time out?
What do you imagine will happen if this is allowed to die?
December 16th, 2009 at 8:21 pmbelaccifer lacca, i have thought about it – as it stands the gov’t will pay subsidies for those earning up to $90G!!! when has a family earning $90 needed a subsidy??? they know that this will continue to increase the premiums until the “Health care” industry is more than 1/6 of the country’s GDP…
What needs to be changed is the Insurance companies ability to create monopolies and to be 1/6 of the GDP. what needs to be fixed is the fact that the insurance companies make more money by denying you the services you have paid for. What needs to be fixed are caps on coverage – if you get sick then they should be obliged to ensure you get the best care possible as long as you need itwhat needs to be fixed is the number of people who can’t afford this system.
this bill addresses NOTHING that needs to be fixed – they claim they will cover 30 million more people but that is because it will be illegal NOT to be covered.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:23 pmSorry I left in such a hurry before. (TP wouldn’t even let me say goodbye :(
Must have given just a little too much reality.
..hey, I’ve got to tell you, I’m surprised conservative jerk is still here. lol, he ain’t nothin if he ain’t determined. lol
December 16th, 2009 at 8:23 pmI think Fred has a great point here. These so-called democrats need to be voted off the island.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:25 pmtrevinla says:
That’s all fine and I agree but how does killing the bad bill lead to a BETTER and stronger bill down the line???
Show me and I’m with you but I DO NOT SEE IT right now.
I see thirty more years of even WORSE offenses by the insurance industry and you and I discussing this EXACT same bill… look at 1974.
Seriously.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:26 pmI think the White House underestimated the backlash to the current proposal. The progressives are getting a bill dictated by the minority conservaDems and Lieberman rather than a compromise. I don’t like the idea that the bill is a take it or leave proposition by these people. Legislation is supposed to be the majority consensus and this bill is not that. Pelosi and the House are going to have to do some hard bargaining to fix the senate bill.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:30 pmHe recently learned how to construct a five word sentence.
December 16th, 2009 at 8:32 pmit doesn’t have to be down the line… put the good things back in and threaten Lieberman with losing his chairmanship – he loves the spotlight so much i can’t imagine he would want to become a voiceless backbench. simply tell him if he doesn’t vote for closure he will not be chairman – he can vote however he wants on the bill but he must vote for closure
but, either way – this bill is BAD, not good enough. if it was good enough then i would back the “change it later” method but as long as there is a mandate with out a gov’t option i can’t back that
December 16th, 2009 at 8:33 pmbelaccifer, I suppose if I really was a VDT, I would just say; Nothing, No, Nadda. Because I would be from the party of NO.
But I’m not. I’m a life-long Democrat. Yes, I get pissed (but I have to tell you, I’ve NEVER been more pissed than I am now) but I come back down to reality. The only thing is, now reality is this; The Democrats (again, politicians) are a bunch of spineless pussy’s. What happened to President Obama saying that this isn’t going to be an easy fight. And; The insurance lobby WILL fight back. We just have to fight harder??? What was all that? Lip service?
I’m sorry – I’ve lost faith. …it’s like that time when I realized that there was NO GOD. I realized that I’d been had.

December 16th, 2009 at 8:45 pmlook rayall01 (what ever the f that means) – President Obama isn’t a traitor (or a communist, socialist ..or what ever you want to call him). Fact is, the man is RIGHT of center. I knew this when I gave his campaign money to help him get elected.
Now I’m pretty sure you are either; #1 – a moron …no, scratch that. An Imbecile -or- #2. a racist. Perhaps a little bit of both, eh?
President Obama needs to step up to the stage and take the leadership position he’s been given. Quit thinking that the rethugs are going to help him in ANYTHING – and realize that he has enemies in HIS OWN PARTY! (ok, maybe enemies is a little too strong. How about corporate-owned democrats?)

December 16th, 2009 at 9:10 pmI just watched the special comment. I wish I could reprint it in it’s entireity. Succint, to the point, pulled no punches.
Keith is right, if this passes the way it is all the dem.’s that voted for it are going to be remembered when all the hardworking people in this country are forced to give over 17% of their income to the profit based insurance companies.
This really is a farce.
December 16th, 2009 at 9:17 pmI agree 100% with Bernie Sanders, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Nicole Sandler…. this is not health care reform, this is an insurance and Big Pharma giveaway.
What is so sad, there are thousands out there in desperate immediate need for affordable health care. Do we pass what we can to save these souls? How can we not… this is extortion.
December 16th, 2009 at 9:18 pmNo matter what happens to this bill, Obama loses. He is incapable of negotiating a compromise between the two factions of the party and weak when it comes to battling the opposition Republicans. He would have been better off slamming the Republicans for obstructing the legislation and pushing a compromise bill through the senate. Even if the Republicans filibuster the bill, Obama gets the bully pulpit to show the public what the Republicans are doing. Then Obama could have used reconciliation to get the best reforms. This would have put the Dems in a much better position with the voters in 2010. Now Obama and the Dems look like they compromised their principles just to get any bill through and a bad one to boot.

December 16th, 2009 at 9:41 pmIts closure – not “cloture”.
For clarification – ‘closure’ is a parliamentary procedure to stop/cut off debate at some fixed point.
I assume that this is a typo – but I have seen this repetitive word -specifically ‘cloture’ on here and on the Truthout site as well- two times now in the past 6 weeks.
Somebody must have ‘added’ this incorrect word – to your custom dictionary… but fix it!

December 17th, 2009 at 12:49 amTo everybody who’s pissed off about this, Bob Cesca’s pissed off too. Then he calms down and thinks it through. As always, a great read there.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:16 amI do not think the senate committee for reconciliation is going to get enough authority to put the public option back in the bill. I hope Pelosi and other Dems are gutsy enough to force the whole ugly mess out into the open if there are not major concessions on the senate side. And for Christmas, I want Lieberman to become a pariah everywhere he goes. People should be picketing his offices and home and generally making it hard for him and his wife to go anywhere and do anything.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:52 amI wouldn’t vote for this piece of crap either…not with that mandate, which Pres. Obama ran against during the campaign, loaded with ‘gifts” for pharma and the insurance companies…which Obama ran against!!! Obama will be a one-term prez if this bill passes!
December 17th, 2009 at 8:41 amPurple State says:
I’m bitter about it, but…if we can pass something, I’d hold out hope it leads to something better.

I disagree. To just pass something with the thought of making changes later is unacceptable to me. This is what they said 40 years ago once they passed medicare.
Obama and the democrats are making a huge mistake by allowing a few blue dogs and the republican party to water down this bill. But than again, where has Obama been on this issue, between taking single payer off of the table from the get go to cutting a deal with big pharma, to having a mandate which forces everyone to purchase health insurance or face a fine or jail time while handing the insurance companies more customers will be worse to the party than just passing a horseshit, watered down bill.
December 17th, 2009 at 10:21 amReconciliation baby!
December 17th, 2009 at 10:23 amI sent a “thank you” to Senator Sanders through his website last night. He deserves all our gratitude for having some real progressive principles.
Uncle Fester @ 99 I agree 100%. I don’t understand what in our entire process we ever passed something just to get something better down the line… explain to me how this has worked in the past, and I might agree. Compromise is compromise.
December 17th, 2009 at 12:31 pmI not only blame Traitor Joe and the Rethuglipigs, I also blame Rahm Emmanuel. He was the one who told Harry Reid to give Traitor Joe everything he wants.
December 17th, 2009 at 1:14 pmThe Obama administration has released new deficit numbers, and they are not pretty.
The deficit for fiscal year 2009, which ended Sept. 30, came in at a record $1.42 trillion, more than triple the record set just last year.
In addition, future deficits are currently projected to total $9.1 trillion in the coming decade.
December 17th, 2009 at 3:58 pmThe Republicans are not the bad guys here. Adding another enormous public welfare initiatives is just not sustainable. A new program, despite the best intentions, will never be allowed to die no matter what the cost.
The real culprit of rising costs is not the insurance industry…it’s the suicidal behavior that people engage in, i.e. overeating, smoking, drugs, not exercising, etc. that is the real health and cost threat. Getting people to change their behavior, and creating incentives for people to do so, will likely be the only true, sustainable method for controlling costs and debilitating illness. It is true that some people will always need help and they should get it. The ones who can help themselves have a responsibility to do so.
