After Coburn Asked Americans To Pray ‘Somebody’ Misses Health Care Vote, Inhofe Skips Today’s Roll Call

Just before the Senate vote on the first of three procedural motions to move its health care reform bill toward final passage, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) appeared to urge Americans to pray that a member of the majority caucus would not show up to vote, thus leaving the Democrats one vote shy of breaking the GOP filibuster:

COBURN: What the American people ought to pray is that somebody can’t make the vote tonight. That’s what they ought to pray.

As it turned out however, all 100 U.S. senators voted on the measure, which passed on a party-line 60-40 vote. This morning, the Senate health care reform bill jumped the second procedural hurdle, with all 60 senators in the Democratic caucus voting to pass the measure. However, only 39 Republicans voted against passage. Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) was the Republican who missed the vote.

On C-Span this morning, a caller wondered if perhaps Coburn’s prayer request had “backfire[ed]” against his own party:

CALLER: Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Waycross, we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.

How hard did you pray because I see one of our members was missing this morning. Did it backfire on us? One of our members died? How hard did you pray senator? Did you pray hard enough?

While Barrasso didn’t answer the question directly, he said he didn’t know why Inhofe missed the vote. Both Coburn and Inhofe’s offices did not respond to inquiries from ThinkProgress for comment. Watch it:

When Coburn asked Americans to pray that a Senator miss these crucial health care votes, he never specified Republican or Democrat.

Update Roll Call reports that Inhofe "was absent to fly his wife home to Oklahoma in advance of the Christmas holiday but that he is headed back to Washington, D.C., for this week’s remaining votes."

However, the God that I worship and pray to is bigger than I am, smarter than I am, and wiser than I am. I cannot imagine approaching my Heavenly Father and treating Him like an office assistant. It takes a great deal of arrogance to issue a prayer that suggests I know exactly how a problem should be solved, that I’ve done all the planning, and that all I need is for God to implement what I’ve decided should be done.

Their prayer appears to be, “God, please prevent a Democrat from voting. We’ve already decided this is the best way to defeat this bill. And, of course, we’ve already decided this bill must be defeated.”

A better approach would be, “God, we’re not fond of this bill. We pray for your intervention to see that it’s defeated.”

Even better, “God, please let the result of this vote be Your will.”

I speak out against such behavior, and I maintain that the best way to emulate Jesus (which we should all do) is not to bomb other countries, but to take care of each other, feed our poor, and protect our oppressed. I’m convinced there are many other Christians who feel the way I do, but we are rarely heard (in fact, it took a lot of church shopping before I found one that put more emphasis on the Golden Rule than on the threat of gay people kissing each other, so sometimes it’s tough to be heard even among people who call themselves Christians).

My road has not been as difficult as it has for my Muslim friend. I’m not hated for my faith nearly as much as she has been. But having experienced just a taste of the powerlessness has enabled me to be empathetic to anyone who shouts for what is right and is not heard.

Inhofe’s wife couldn’t fly home alone? What a control freak Inhofe is! What did he think would happen….she’s cheat on him on the plane so he had to go with her to be her chaperon?

ElBruce, that quote from Matthew is in the context of not being afraid of what kills the body, but being afraid of what kills the “soul.”

And I’d be happy to grant that, provided that those who claim Islam is inherently violent based on fragmentary phrases from the Kuran also grant a similar degree of care with context.

Jesus still totally threw down in front of the Temple, though.

I have some problems with the general attitude these people have about prayer…

Unlike yourself I am not a practicing religionist. I have read the bible a couple of times in the sense that it is morality play. My mother does however actively practice. Her belief is that you have to help others who can’t help themselves and wish no ill on anyone. Compassion leads to understanding. She doesn’t force her ideas on anyone apart from her example. I follow her example not her belief.

You have got it right mismolly the jesus I have read about isn’t a vengeful wish-fairy
