Just before the Senate vote on the first of three procedural motions to move its health care reform bill toward final passage, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) appeared to urge Americans to pray that a member of the majority caucus would not show up to vote, thus leaving the Democrats one vote shy of breaking the GOP filibuster:
COBURN: What the American people ought to pray is that somebody can’t make the vote tonight. That’s what they ought to pray.
As it turned out however, all 100 U.S. senators voted on the measure, which passed on a party-line 60-40 vote. This morning, the Senate health care reform bill jumped the second procedural hurdle, with all 60 senators in the Democratic caucus voting to pass the measure. However, only 39 Republicans voted against passage. Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) was the Republican who missed the vote.
On C-Span this morning, a caller wondered if perhaps Coburn’s prayer request had “backfire[ed]” against his own party:
CALLER: Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Waycross, we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.
How hard did you pray because I see one of our members was missing this morning. Did it backfire on us? One of our members died? How hard did you pray senator? Did you pray hard enough?
While Barrasso didn’t answer the question directly, he said he didn’t know why Inhofe missed the vote. Both Coburn and Inhofe’s offices did not respond to inquiries from ThinkProgress for comment. Watch it:
When Coburn asked Americans to pray that a Senator miss these crucial health care votes, he never specified Republican or Democrat.
Dang those unintended consequences… I guess you have to be a lot more specific in your prayers for the death of certain people…
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 amCALLER: Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Whitecross (sp),
Now they call themselves teabaggers.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 amCareful what you pray for. The same thing happened for the d convention. Take a hint.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:33 amHeheh – there you have it. Proof that God loves US better. ;o)
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:34 amWould it be too gauche for me to pray that God takes some of these major repiggie
figures home to heaven a bit on the early side, like this week perhaps?
Hurry up, Jesus.
Come and take Imhofe, Coburn, Palin, Beck, Hannity, Ingraham, Malkin, DeMint,
McConnell, Sessions, Steele, etc.
Please, Jesus, take them to heaven now.
They are always talking about it, so they must want it real, real bad.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:35 amAfter Coburn Asked Americans To Pray ‘Somebody’ Misses Health Care Vote, Inhofe Skips Today’s Roll Call
– - See Jimmah, the Lord works in mysterious ways, especially in the Christmas season.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:38 amWho would’ve thought the power of prayer could have such an effect?
Doc Colebin (as Dick Armey affectionately referred to him as, in his drunken Texan drawl) should probably try to use some of that prayer power to convince McConnell to abandon the filibuster so that these God-fearing Christian men can spend their Christmas Eve at home with their families.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 amOh pry harder coburn only one of your cult members didnt show up we need more like 20 or 30 would be a good start.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 am- – Jimmah? Coburn, Inhofe, is there really a difference?
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:39 amI’m calling every christain republican I encounter today on this.
We will see if they think god responds to prayers for someone’s death.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:40 amOPPS Pry should be pray but either way the cult needs to stay on the wrong side and push for there demise.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:41 amCALLER: Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Whitecross (sp), we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.
Praying for God to kill someone just because you dislike his political views. How “Christian” of them.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:41 amIsn’t Senator Inhofe a hoax?
I’ve always thought so.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 amDr. (do no harm) Coburn prays for someone’s death! He deserves AMA censure! In the same sense, does he realize how SICK he’s become?
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:42 amBadmoodman asks: Coburn, Inhofe, is there really a difference?
Not really. It’s the difference between dumb and dumber.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:43 amWhere, oh where, did those ‘Christians’ go so off track?
Do they really believe that God will respond to their pleas to have someone die?!
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:44 amDo they really believe that God is okay with them praying for someone’s death?
Are they psychotic?
When imprecatory prayers backfire, is it then called fate? Also too, is reality biting these people in the ass, or what?
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:44 amI wonder how many people are in a small tea bag group. I think more than two would be considered an orgy.

Hey coburn did not jim jones pray for dead as well?
i know you cult is much larger then his was but i know you can go for the record of people dieing for there cult.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 amTo quote a classic Republican line from this misbegotten decade: “Mission Accomplished”. Or, to paraphrase another one “heck of a job Cobie!”
[Don't worry wingnuts, Inhofe is only dead from the neck up, no actual hatemongering nutters were harmed in bringing about this moment of irony]
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 amInhofe leaving tells the story. They know they have lost.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 amPraying for the death of a person. This is exactly why I have left “the Church Establishment.”
I can not call myself a Christian in this nation anymore without feeling dirty, or like a religious extremist.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:48 amDoes the praying of the death of someone constitute a breach of the hippocratic oath of “First do no harm?”
I know that it certainly is a sin… because a sin is a sin in “thought, word, or deed” at least as I was taught in Sunday School. So Coburn thought it and he said it out loud… that’s 2 sins…
Let’s all pray for Coburn’s soul. Shall we?
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:50 amALLAHU AKBAR!?
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 amThe Power of Prayer may not be destined for the target you seek.

December 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 amIt’s just one of those “Be careful of what you wish (pray) for; you might get what you wanted, in a surprising form, at an inconvenient time.” moments.
Inhofe may have decided he needed a decent night’s sleep back at the C-Street dorm or gone back to OK.
Nah, he’s sulking after his rude encounter with reality in Copenhagen. He’s so used to being sucked up to that he’s forgotten that outside the Beltway and OK, he’s just another arsehole.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:51 amOur small tea bag group here in Whitecross (sp), we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.
Wow. Praying for the death of a man so that many, many others will continue to die because of a lack of access to decent health care.
Isn’t that the opposite of what Christians are supposed to be about?
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:55 amHow awfull that someone, a tea partier no less, calls in to say they were praying for an elected official to die. Their behavior is so over the top it’s frightening. I can only wonder what the horror of the 2010 elections are going to bring down on us with these despicable people running around. How deplorable, not to mention very UNCHRISTIAN Like!
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:56 amBad news, LibertyLover: I’m afraid there’s no point in praying for Coburn’s soul. He sold it to Satan for a senate seat.
We can only pray that the devil will come to collect sooner rather than later.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:57 amthat caller’s statement sounded like a very clever snark..
but I’m afraid he was 100% sincere.. especially judging from the tearing up at the end..

Barrasso is also a rodeo physician for the Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association (and a member of the “Cowboy Joe Club”) and volunteers as a team physician for Casper College as well as several local high schools
Barrasso is also a member of the Board of Directors of Presidential Classroom, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that brings young people to Washington, D.C. to learn about government. Barrasso is a member of the Casper Chamber of Commerce and the Casper Rotary Club.
Barrasso is a perennial local host for the Jerry Lewis Telethon (with more than 20 years of service) and a frequent guest on Utah Public Television and the Casper ABC affiliate, KTWO-TV, where he offers commentary on a wide range of medical topics. December 22nd, 2009 at 12:00 pmHome resales surged last month to the highest level in nearly three years, reflecting an extraordinary level of federal support that has pulled the housing market back from the worst downturn since the Great Depression.
Senator Barrasso didn’t even blink when the caller said his teabagger group had prayed for the death of Senator Byrd.
Unbelievable.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:00 pmHaHaHa these stupid commentators miss the point about how sick it is to prey for ill wishes in the first place.
My expert advice to the caller,
“No you did not prey hard enough. First you have to shave your whole body, paint your left arm red, your face green and run down the isles of Wal Mart for 6 hours, yelling your prayers over and over again. Next you have sacrifice a piece of your own body by cutting off a finger or a toe , and burn it while continually chanting your prayer aloud.”
Works every time!
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:02 pmO/T bu speaking of health care and dying and doctors and praying, the world is that Dr Tiller’s “alleged” murderer, Scott Schroeder, is claiming “justifiable homicide” as his official defense.
I wonder if Bill O’Reilly’s many segments in which he called Dr Tiller a murderer etc will be used by the defense…?
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:04 pmI have some problems with the general attitude these people have about prayer.
I am a Christian — one who really resents feeling like I have to be apologetic for that because of the behavior of people who use that label to dress up their bigotries and general hatefulness.
However, the God that I worship and pray to is bigger than I am, smarter than I am, and wiser than I am. I cannot imagine approaching my Heavenly Father and treating Him like an office assistant. It takes a great deal of arrogance to issue a prayer that suggests I know exactly how a problem should be solved, that I’ve done all the planning, and that all I need is for God to implement what I’ve decided should be done.
Their prayer appears to be, “God, please prevent a Democrat from voting. We’ve already decided this is the best way to defeat this bill. And, of course, we’ve already decided this bill must be defeated.”
A better approach would be, “God, we’re not fond of this bill. We pray for your intervention to see that it’s defeated.”
Even better, “God, please let the result of this vote be Your will.”
These people don’t seem to understand that their God is not their servant. He’s not a genie in a lamp. If they were REALLY sincere about prayer, they would allow Him to decide what’s best.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:06 pmInhofe had a date with a blowup doll in the closet in his office…

December 22nd, 2009 at 12:09 pmAfter praying for someone’s death doesn’t work, the caller questions the effort, not the immorality of killing someone.
Didn’t Jesus say that the thought itself was a sin, not merely the act? So the prayer participants might as well have been doing the murder.
Looks like they better pray that we never get a public option and please pray for both OK Senators to win their next elections. While you’re at it, pray the rs get their perm majority. Oh, wait the last one was already answered.

Senator Inhofe, “No baby, the Dems will probably keep us here until Christmas Eve, effing unGodly socialists. No reason for you to stay, I’ll take you back to Oklahoma so you can start cooking. Me, I’ll be fine. Me and some of the boys are planning a little shindig on Christmas Eve at the C Street house. What, yeah Coburn will be there, Ensign too. Yeah just the guys…what? No there won’t be any hookers I promise. C’mon honey this is a church, I know what the filthy Dems have been saying but it’s not true…we just pray, that’s it! Ok, so I’ll pick you up and take you home. December 22nd, 2009 at 12:18 pmIn Inhofe’s defense, the only relevant number for the cloture vote was whether they could gather 60 Ayes.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:19 pmInhofe is a selfish dickhead. He knows that if a quarum is not maintained that the dems can do lots of things that they want prevented.

December 22nd, 2009 at 12:23 pmLooks like the FSM intercepted those prayers and lashed out at Inhofe with his noodly appendage. Makes as much sense as any other prayer explanation.
Christians are damned by their association with these right wing freaks. I have a hard time separating my feelings for Repugnants from Christians, and they don’t all deserve that disgust (the Christians that is, the Repugs deserve that and more), but when you sleep with dogs you wake up with fleas.

My best friend is Muslim. She lived in New York at the time of 9/11, and like all other Americans, she was heartbroken and outraged by the tragedies that day.
Since that time, she has spoken out against terrorism, and has joined groups of Muslims who band together to speak out against terrorism, in an effort to be heard. The media pay practically no attention to them, but they DO pay attention to other people who complain that Muslims don’t condemn the acts of terrorists, and so therefore they must all support terrorism.
I am a Christian who resents my faith being hijacked by bigots, opportunists, and greedheads who attempt to do their deeds in the name of God. I speak out against such behavior, and I maintain that the best way to emulate Jesus (which we should all do) is not to bomb other countries, but to take care of each other, feed our poor, and protect our oppressed. I’m convinced there are many other Christians who feel the way I do, but we are rarely heard (in fact, it took a lot of church shopping before I found one that put more emphasis on the Golden Rule than on the threat of gay people kissing each other, so sometimes it’s tough to be heard even among people who call themselves Christians).
My road has not been as difficult as it has for my Muslim friend. I’m not hated for my faith nearly as much as she has been. But having experienced just a taste of the powerlessness has enabled me to be empathetic to anyone who shouts for what is right and is not heard.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:24 pmI don’t get why people are surprised at this. Conservative Christians have been doing this for quite some time now. Praying that Supreme Court Justices would die. Praying that politicians would die. Praying that storms hit Dem conventions, etc. etc. etc. They’re just low down dirty rats, that’s all. We should take that for granted by now.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:24 pmmudsharks buddy, well I personally believe that coburn came close enough for it to count.

December 22nd, 2009 at 12:57 pmSo Imhofe had to leave to ‘fly his wife back to OK’? Is he a pilot or just so patriarchal that his god-fearin’ little lady is unable to get on a big bad plane all by herself?
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:58 pma licensed commercial pilot, the only one in congress by the way, and may have, in fact, actually flown his dear wife home. It’s possible.
Sure, and it’s also possible he fitted her with a solid rocket booster engine and shot her home using a laser pointer.
December 22nd, 2009 at 12:59 pmIt’s also possible that you are just a republican apologist.
In fact, I’m convinced of it.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:01 pmRickytwo says:
OK, OK, one more last final thought. Imhofe is a licensed commercial pilot, the only one in congress by the way, and may have, in fact, actually flown his dear wife home. It’s possible.
******
Yeah, maybe so, but did he need to? Commercial flights are again leaving DC after the storm.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:01 pmRepugs arrogantly assume that god is on their side.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:01 pmThere is no god who grants wishes – is he a birthday candle?
bizarrobrain,
I repent, anything but hlle. Besides it was FVNNY GUY who typed the blaspehemy. He will end up in hell being diddled by incubi for eternity unless he prays for forgiveness. And tithes.
And FVNNY GUY, you can’t just back away from the Old book that easy, doesn’t the New one say some crap about everything written in the first book of the series is law, every jot and tittle? Unless you in your infinite wisdom are able to pick and choose which passages you like and discard the rest, in which case you are the arbiter of what’s right and wrong and the whole mess is just another self help book on Oprah’s list instead of being divinely inspired.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:02 pmFVNY says
No muslim clerics preach Jihad against the West?
So how many? and who? have any real prove?
I can start with pat Robinson
your turn
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:02 pmFVNY: That was the Old Testament.
Which means that Creationism is out, the Ten Commandments are out, right? Or do you also cherry-pick the OT as need be?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:02 pmI thought you said it wasn’t Muslim?
You seem confused and it appears that your defenses are inadequate.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:04 pmtake heed, righties….
the lord done smote jimmy inahuff,
and he’ll smite all y’all backwards asses, if you don’t strighten up and simmer down!!!!!!!!!
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:04 pmWhat is this moron AAronk babbling about?
Has he ever heard of the Holy Inquisition?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:04 pmfvny is engaged in a jihad against taxes,
…cause the irs is a-comin’ for him.
shut up and pay your taxes aarroonnkk!!!
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:05 pmThat’s actually along the lines I was thinking when I read the article. I didn’t know that Inhofe was a pilot, but it made sense from the wording that he was.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:07 pmThen why do you guys always break Leviticus when you’re looking for a passage to condemn Teh Gays?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:08 pmIslam has preached violence and death to us infidels.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:09 pmThey teach that crap in the Madras’s. I think that’s what they callem.
Christianity has also preached violence and death.
And have for a very long time. The Crusades?
Not to mention the vibe coming from them in 2001.
Religion breeds hatred. It breeds contempt. Catholics against Protestants. Hindu against Muslim.
Muslim against Christian.
And while I’m at it, Alot of these bible thumpers had no problem hanging an innocent black man then goin to church to pray for forgiveness. So, on Sunday afternoon. All was good.
They could right out and do it again.
No, religion breeds hatred.
There are alot of very decent people who are religious.
But, organized religion has caused more death and despair than any other cult in history.
It’s one thing to be spiritual. It’s an entirely different thing to be a follower.
Watch out. God might smite you.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:12 pmit’s
aaronk, do you really consider yourself a Christian?
You don’t seem to be leading a very Christ-like existence, seething with hate and making threats of terrorist gun violence the way you do.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:12 pmThis explains C Street then. The Ten Commandments are only history and not to be followed by Christians.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:13 pmFVNY calling Miss Molly stupid — I’m laughing my ass off.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:14 pmFVNY:
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:15 pmAnother day that could be used toward reaching that income plateau you dream of seems to be passing you by… What gives?
FVNNY GUY, Let me put the nastiness on hold for a second and offer a book for your reading pleasure for the holiday break, Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris.
He validates your point that Islam is not a peaceful religion but neither is Christianity.
His point is that we humans need to stop aligning ourselves into these separate tribes of believers. That common bond may have helped groups survive at one point but we need to evolve (gasp!) past the myths.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:17 pmAAronk
You unbelievable mAnn Coulter POS.
Of course, being such a wonderful x-tian you also believe that “Jews need to be perfected”
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:17 pmfvny – now you just sound like a kid desperate to score any kind of a point in the 4th quarter of a game you’d already lost at halftime…
have a little bit of dignity – it’s embarrassing to watch someone debase himself this way.
sure – it was funny at first – like the video of the drunkest guy ever going for more beer, but 3-4 minutes is enough – after that it’s just demeaning to all involved.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:17 pmSo… YES, you DO cherry-pick the OT as need be.
Not a surprise. The only surprise is that you admit it.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:18 pmJesus was a Jew. Don’t be hatin’ Jews.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:18 pmIsn’t revelations in the NT?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:18 pm“CALLER: Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Whitecross (sp), we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.”
That is evidence that those on the the Christianist right don’t understand their religion any better than they understand their government or Constitution.
There is an alternative explanation that I have heard for the result, and that is that God thinks Tom Coburn is a friggin’ whack job.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:19 pmYup. The Book of Revelations is in the New Testament.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:20 pmFVNY calling Fred (or anyone else) stupid — I’m laughing my ass off.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:20 pmIsn’t revelations in the NT?
If I’m so stupid, explain this. revelations is nothing but a vengeful god.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:23 pmHey FVNY.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:23 pmThose were not all clerics. Merely followers. There are a fw clerics in that list. But certainly not all.
Religion: “Yer either with us ,or agin us.”
Of course, the christian religion is based upon jesus christ from the new testament — but repugs today don’t like that jesus was a socialist by nature, a man who spurned wealth, who befriended the sinners and outcasts, who chastised the moneymakers, who preached that we share what we have with one another, and so on. When they want to impose their narrow-minded, selfish, and authoritarian ways upon the rest of mankind, they invoke the old testament with all of its vengeance, intolerance, bloodlust and gore.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 pmThe OT is no different from the Greek and Roman mythology polytheism, except that it claims only one god.
So FVNY:
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 pmWhen do you intend to start chasing your dreams? Maybe tomorrow?
by the way aaronkie donk. Missmolly and I didn’t disagree, you just tried to make it look that way and failed.
Don’t you ever get tired of failing?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:24 pmThe list of Muslim followers reminds me of your boy Jimmy Jones. Do you claim him?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:26 pmFVNY
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:26 pmYou still haven’t proven that Christianity isn’t violent or at least the history of the religion hasn’t been a violent one.
FVNY says:
Keep laughing because I pretty much destroyed Fred’s argument that Islam is not violent!
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:23 pm
Unlike the way you get totally destroyed every single day on this blog.
I’ve got news for you, halfwit — ALL religion is violent.
Now I’m pointing and laughing.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:26 pmAnyone who thinks Christianity is a peaceful religion.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:26 pmProbably thinks GWBoosh was a mensa student.
Now you’re just being dishonest. What happens to the non-believers?
Pretty vengful if you ask me.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:27 pmCALLER: Yeah doctor. Our small tea bag group here in Whitecross (sp)
Their teabags aren’t the only things that are small, right FVNY?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:28 pmmary lacewing says:
Where, oh where, did those ‘Christians’ go so off track?
============================================================
Not to be judgmental but it really has been very disturbing to say the least to observe some of the things these so called Christians of the religious right say and do.
It almost makes me wonder (forgive me for saying this God) if these Christians actually believe that God and the bible are a hoax used to enslave others while making ones self think and appear to be morally superior to everyone else.
Sure we are taught that man sins but a true Christian doesn’t act or think in the way that Inhofe, Coburn, Brownback, Palin or Bachmann act or think.
How can these people go to Church on Sunday knowing that each and every day they spread lies and hate which in effect passes onto other so called Christians who then repeat what they hear, the same blatant dishonesty and hate.
If Christianity is dying in our country, the examples these people above set are a prime reason for it’s death.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:28 pmAnd you know what? Muslims who call for violence ALSO do so because they believe that it will lead to everlasting peace!
So you have just proved that Islam is every bit as peaceful as Christianity!
Hooray for ecumenism!
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:28 pmFVNY
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:29 pmDo you believe in Nostradamus too?
More importantly, he hasn’t shown that Muslims have embraced the current violence as christains have.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:30 pmCorrect me if I am wrong…wasn’t it the anti-christ who brings world peace and then Jesus shows up (with a sword in his mouth) and f**ks everything up? Care to tell me more about this prince of peace?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:30 pmFVNY says:
FVNY calling Fred (or anyone else) stupid — I’m laughing my ass off.

Keep laughing because I pretty much destroyed Fred’s argument that Islam is not violent!
Neither Christianity or Islam is inherently violent. This hasn’t stopped Christians and Muslims from doing violence in the name of their religion. Modern Judaism appears to have avoided the primary trap of monotheism, but any religion that claims to have the One God is on a slippery slope to killing anyone that disagrees.
Modern Christianity, at least for the time being, has moved away from the auto de fe and relies on prayer to kill off its opponents. We can only thank god (heh) that prayer is obviously useless as a weapon.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:31 pmFVNY:
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:31 pmYou forgot one up there.
Sheikh Dyur Bootay
FVNY says:
In revelations, Jesus’ second coming ushers in a 1,000 year reign of peace!
=============================================================
Is that before the Anti-Christ comes onto the scene posing as Jesus and all of those of the religious right are fooled and worship him?
Christianity in the eyes and deeds of Jesus is a peaceful religion but in the hands of man it can be very violent and deadly, as history has shown.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 pmI take it FVNY has never been to Northern Ireland.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 pmOr South west Scotland.
Does the name Ian Paisley ring a bell?
In revelations, Jesus’ second coming ushers in…
And in McDonald-land, the Hamburglar’s arrest ushered in weeks of Happy Meals.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:34 pmFred says”
True…even in the dark ages while Europeans were slaying each other over petty things or for no reason at all…the Islamic world was guarding most of the world’s knowledge. The muslim extremists embrace violence…but in America, it’s become common place in the news to hear about this sort of thing from Christians.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:36 pmWhen is the Feast of Maximum Occupancy?
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:37 pmFVNY:
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:39 pmDo you understand this whole self made man concept? You know the one about hard work and effort and forging your own destiny?
For the most part, I’d agree. But let’s not forget: Under Rumsfeld, Pentagon published Bible verses on top-secret intel reports.
There’s evidence that the invasion of Iraq was undertaken, in part, out of W’s interpretation of Christianity. At the very least, Rummy kept W motivated with the idea that they were doing the Lord’s work as the body count steadily rose.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:39 pmWhen TP first broke the story of Coburn asking Americans to pray that someone couldn’t make it to the vote, my Oracle powers were in full force.
I actually predicted this.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:50 pmIn Matthew 24:4 Jesus warns his disciples “Take heed that no man deceive you.”
The self proclaimed party of God have done nothing but deceive their supporters and others with death panels, pulling the plug on Grandma, Obama is a Kenyan, WMD’s, Mushroom clouds, Communists are in congress, tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations stimulate the economy and create new jobs etc, etc, etc…
The best example of deceiving his followers was the late Oral Roberts who climbed into his Ivory tower and told his parish that God instructed him to raise $8 million and if he failed God would take him home.
Seriously, do people actually believe that God wanted some Pastor to extort $8 million from his fellow man or God would kill the Pastor???
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:52 pmWhat the hell just happened with TP? The home page has a black background and the comment section is different looking???
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:54 pmOkay the comment section appears to be back to normal…weird!
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:55 pmTsk, tsk, tsk, Dr. Quack Coburn. Be careful what you say and wish for because your words can come back to bite you. He never thought that his own GOP colleague was a no-show. God certainly has a sense of humor.
December 22nd, 2009 at 1:57 pmOh, I thought the Crusades and the Inquisition came after Jesus.
Thanks for clearing that up.
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:01 pmIt didn’t work because the repubs didn’t sacrifice a lamb or a goat or a calf on a stone altar….
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:03 pmDumasses, everyone knows that.
Good boy. Don’t listen to anything your dog tells you.
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:06 pmMankind must evolve past religion or face the real consequences of planetary destruction from neglectful practices against the Earth.
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:13 pmdbadass says:
FVNY:

Remembered from a teevee show or movie somewhere, I don’t know when:
“I don’t have a belly button. I’m a self-made man.”
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:25 pmYep, FVNY has run away after getting his ass handed to him AGAIN by the TP insect cabal.
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:29 pmZimzone,
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:31 pmI doubt mankind will ever fully move away from religion. History shows us that polytheism became monotheism…its possible theists could just drop the extra God and the craziness that goes along with it but everytime religion changes or evolves…the major ones at least tend to change for the worst.
Ya…that kind of threw me for a loop, too. Then again, I can’t really believe that caller wasn’t a joke. I mean, come on…
…really?
This is who I share my country with? W T F
December 22nd, 2009 at 2:43 pmIf 5,000 years worth of elaborate fantasies have taught us anything; it’s apparent that prayers, spells, and incantations can backfire. 5,000 years of science and history, on the other hand, proves that prayers, spells, and incantations have no effect.
The scary part is what happens when stupid people realize their prayers, spells, and incantations have no effect. All too often they take “God’s wrath” into their own hands and start burning “witches” and slaughtering those who don’t share their particular views.
Which, of course, is the main reason why fundamentalists should be barred from public office. They are dangerous and the mobs they inspire are more dangerous.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:04 pmApparently God gets a little ticked off when a bunch of hicks start telling him waht to do. But, he was willing to throw John McCain under the bus when FVNY/aaronk ordered him to fix the 2008 election.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:13 pmPete,
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:15 pmIt’s like how the trolls say climate change is a religion or is our religion or some variant…propaganda has pretty much replaced Jesus for the right. Their followers aren’t scared for their country, they’re just scared. The more you scare them, the more crazy shit they will believe, say and act upon.
we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die or couldn’t show up at the vote the other night.
And this is exactly what Gandhi meant when he said, “Christians are so unlike Christ”.
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:43 pmMaybe Inhofe realized that if everybody showed up, it would be proof positive that C-streeter’s prayers weren’t answered, so he took matters into his own hands.
.
we got our vigil together and took Dr. Coburn’s instructions and prayed real hard that Sen. Byrd would either die…
I still gotta ask, who or what are they praying to? Because it obviously isn’t the God of Abraham, Jesus and Mohammed.
.
FVNY says:
And many Muslims have embraced violence throughout history.
Many Christians have embraced violence throughout history.
.
FVNY says:
Mohammed himself, unlike Jesus Christ, embraced violence.
Matthew 10:34
So there’s Jesus promoting violence…
John 2: 14-16
And there’s Jesus personally committing an act of violence against some innocent capitalists.
Now I’m not saying that he didn’t also talk about peace from time to time… but so did Mohammed.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:06 pmFVNY: “The Old Testament is part of the Bible and its part of the Christian heritage but it is the New Testament that guides Christians. Otherwise, we’d be Jews!”
Then stop citing Leviticus when it comes to gays and abortion. And while we’re on the subject, if the New Testament guides you, do us all a favor and re-read Matthew.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:08 pmElBruce, that quote from Matthew is in the context of not being afraid of what kills the body, but being afraid of what kills the “soul.” It’s part of a widely misinterpreted part where Jesus is sending his friends out to spread the word. What people forget about this is the context – they were in danger of being executed or exposed and arrested – there was a military occupation going on.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:17 pmamericanscream says:
And this is exactly what Gandhi meant when he said, “Christians are so unlike Christ”.
************
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:36 pmAnd as Mark Twain said:
“There has been only one Christian. They caught him and crucified him–early.”
And:
“If Christ were here there is one thing he would not be–a Christian.”
Becareful what you wish for it might come back on you. Coburn has proven to be no only evil but hearthless too. Just think this man is not only a Senator but a Doctor and has proven to be one of the worse human being around today. Even at a time when we’re wishing the best for all during this Christian Holiday, the GOP is spreading hate/evil.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:50 pmThe “Mountain” had a REAL important vote to see thru in Uganda authorizing MURDER as a legal form of punishing gay folks… He couldn’t miss it after his stunning success in Denmark..
What a moron…
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:02 pmInhofe’s wife couldn’t fly home alone? What a control freak Inhofe is! What did he think would happen….she’s cheat on him on the plane so he had to go with her to be her chaperon?
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:09 pmNinerFan says:
ElBruce, that quote from Matthew is in the context of not being afraid of what kills the body, but being afraid of what kills the “soul.”
And I’d be happy to grant that, provided that those who claim Islam is inherently violent based on fragmentary phrases from the Kuran also grant a similar degree of care with context.
Jesus still totally threw down in front of the Temple, though.
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:32 pmUnlike yourself I am not a practicing religionist. I have read the bible a couple of times in the sense that it is morality play. My mother does however actively practice. Her belief is that you have to help others who can’t help themselves and wish no ill on anyone. Compassion leads to understanding. She doesn’t force her ideas on anyone apart from her example. I follow her example not her belief.
You have got it right mismolly the jesus I have read about isn’t a vengeful wish-fairy
