In recent days, there has been an uproar in the progressive community over the Senate’s decision to drop the public option from its health care bill in order to reach the crucial 60 votes needed to break a filibuster. Given that many liberals backed a single-payer, Medicare-for-all system, the public option was seen as a political compromise.
“I didn’t campaign on the public option,” President Obama told the Washington Post. But he touted the public option on his campaign website and spoke frequently in support of it during the first year of his presidency, citing its essential value in holding the private insurance industry accountable and providing competition:
– In the 2008 Obama-Biden health care plan on the campaign’s website, candidate Obama promised that “any American will have the opportunity to enroll in [a] new public plan.” [2008]
– During a speech at the American Medical Association, President Obama told thousands of doctors that one of the plans included in the new health insurance exchanges “needs to be a public option that will give people a broader range of choices and inject competition into the health care market.” [6/15/09]
– While speaking to the nation during his weekly address, the President said that “any plan” he signs “must include…a public option.” [7/17/09]
– During a conference call with progressive bloggers, the President said he continues “to believe that a robust public option would be the best way to go.” [7/20/09]
– Obama told NBC’s David Gregory that a public option “should be a part of this [health care bill],” while rebuking claims that the plan was “dead.” [9/20/09]
Despite all this overt advocacy for the public option, it appears that Obama was reticent to apply the political pressure necessary to get the plan in the final hours of congressional negotiation. Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) — who threatened to filibuster the creation of any new public plan or expansion of Medicare — told the Huffington Post that he “didn’t really have direct input from the White House” on the public option and was never specifically asked to support it.
Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), one of the most ardent backers of public insurance, blamed the demise of the public option on a “lack of support from the administration.” Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) — perhaps the most visible defender of the public option in the entire health care debate — went even further, saying that Obama’s lack of support for congressional progressives amounted to him being “half-pregnant” with the health insurance and drug industries.
I replied to my email from the Obama white house last night asking them to remove me from the list.

I can’t believe you folks are this dense. On what planet does Obama pushing on Joe Lieberman to vote for a PO result in Joe changing his mind?!?!?!?
The gig was up. He might as well have pushed on a rope. Would that have made you feel better? Please, stop the stupid.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:17 pmHere’s my take on giving up:
Never give up…
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:17 pmhey billy kristol jr., when in the heck have you ever been right about anything?
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:18 pmAnd how is Joe effing LIEberman now a source for truth? Seriously guys? I mean, this is the dude who’s been lying through his teeth for the past several months. But he’s trustworthy on this? What have you been smoking?
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:21 pmI can’t believe you people or anyone believes anything that comes out of Lieberman’s mouth.
But really, isn’t it possible that Obama understood that industry money and red-state politics were going to prevent a public option through this avenue anyway, so why grandstand and embarrass congressional Democrats? It could be that he knows what he’s doing. We’ll see.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:22 pmGood catch, ComradeJake. You beat me to it.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:23 pmIt appears that the President’s own words speak more harshly against him than anything Joe Lieberman had to say.
And, it’s clear that Joe Lieberman was not the only source for this post, so WTF y’all?
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:26 pmYes it is true, Obama did explicitly campaign on the public option. The decision not to campaign for it during these Congressional debates, was a horrible one and amounts to a broken campaign promise besides.
But we’re not done here. This is getting passed, and as such it lays the groundwork for turning around and tackling the problem again and again until we get it fixed. As long as a Congressional bill doesn’t actually get shut down, you can always go right back to the same issue.

Does TP really think this game is over? Really?
I don’t think so. I’m hoping for a change in Senate rules at the beginning of the next session, which I believe can be done with a simple majority. I’d like the vote for cloture rule to be reduced to 55. It’s a reasonable response to the fact that Republicans have not acted in good faith and have trashed the traditional filibuster guidelines to use it as a tool of general obstruction on everything.
Or, we could see Medicare expanded under budget reconciliation.
What this is is the first round of serious insurance regulations/reforms – I expect more will come.

December 22nd, 2009 at 4:32 pm“And, it’s clear that Joe Lieberman was not the only source for this post, so WTF y’all?”-Zooey
Well, he’s the main source for the notion that Obama didn’t push for the PO in the “final hours”.
Not that it matters. I still don’t understand why anyone is disappointed with Obama for refusing to bash his head against the Joe Lieberman wall over the past month.
News flash people: JOE LIEBERMAN WAS NEVER GOING TO VOTE FOR THE PO. NEVER. NO JOE, NO 60, NO BILL.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:34 pmPresident Obama has been walking a fine line on the public option and I think he has done the right thing. The reforms included in this Senate bill go further in cost reductions than did the House bill. In addition, there is growing momentum to roll out benefits sooner than the initial schedule dictated. I am growing more comfortable with the intent and extent of this round of reform.
The important thing is to get this done and get it implemented. If additional changes need to be made, it will be easier with this foundation already laid. The worst possible outcome would have been to have the whole initiative held hostage to a “public option” and that would likely have happened.
After the first of the year, this administration and Congress needs to pivot quickly to focus on the economy and reducing its operating deficit.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:38 pmZooey: “And, it’s clear that Joe Lieberman was not the only source for this post, so WTF y’all?”
If you all remember, a few months ago, Obama started saying what he wanted was choice and to lower costs and that he felt the public option achieved that, but if Congress had another way to do that, he would sign it. Why would he do this? Maybe because by that time, he knew Dems were not going to get enough votes to break a filibuster on that.
So, you are all angry at Obama for not embarassing the Democratic party over about four of its members. Nobody seems to remember that all 40 Repubs didn’t support anything and that more than five of them come from blue states.
Blue dog Dems represent red states. I’d like people to start thinking about Republicans who represent blue states.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:39 pmLet me think. Who was it that initiated the legislation for a health care reform bill?
Who would have done it if he hadn’t?
Just because this think has gone downhill does not reflect badly on Obama in my opinion.
We would have exactly nothing without him.

stfu and pay your taxes, crybaby.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:40 pmAnd I say that this snake has already turned around and bitten him.
The simplistic news polls quote high levels of folk who disapprove of the plan. What they don’t say is how many are against the plan because it isn’t conservative and how many are against the plan (and the President) because it didn’t go far enough.
These numbers are gonna continue to decrease the “political capital” which the president may use.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:40 pmFred @30: Excellent point. Someone had to get the ball rolling on this, and we all know the republicans don’t have the testicular fortitude….
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:41 pmDefine “public Option”. Why does the choice option need to be called the public option? The mechanism of the non profit organizations created by this bill will take on the effect that the public option was designed to achieve. The beauty of the non profit stature is that they are not directly operated by the government. Henceforth, this is not, not that it ever was, about “government take-over of health care”.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:42 pmThe non profits are designed to work with insurers, regulated by the government through this bill, to get people back into the market and maintain competition. Also, this bill eliminates the insurance company 100 year old anti-trust exemption.
As David Axelrod poignantly pointed out. This bill is not perfect, but we can work with it over time to make it more perfect. As opposed to holding out for perfection. Has anyone on this site ever seen a perfect piece of legislation? I have not. All legislation is living and breathing much like our constitution; amendable at later dates in the continuum of time.
You can’t always get what you want,
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:43 pmBut if you try sometime,
You might find,
You get what you need.
I voted AGAINST Palin/McCain and I’ll vote against any dynamic duo republicans nominate in the future!!
I honestly believe President Obama wants healthcare for everyone. Look at the ignorant, venomous, partisan opposition this POTUS has had to endure in addition to wimpy democrats allegedly in his corner . .
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:44 pmOk what’s going on here with the comments. Now I listen to President Obama for over two years. Even during my 5 month vacation about his health care plan. He was wise enough to know many of his request would be denied, but like most of our smart leaders there’s a backup plan. Now the Republican Senators didn’t want any health care and the rest of the GOP Branches did their best to twist/spin/lie with the help of the Media/Press. Here’s the bottom line, Congress has to pass the final vote with each Branch. Obama has time to amend the Bill so don’t be to quick to say he didn’t get what he wants. The trick is knowing how to work the system without breaking the rules of the US Constitution. Now it’s been 8 years of the GOP doing what they wanted and not reporting to the American people. Most Americans have no idea what Bills were passed during 2000 -2008 and we are seeing the results. As recent of yesterday Americans are attacking Obama for letting Goldman Sachs move in to a new building funded by taxpayers. Yet no one questioned Goldman Sach Investment Company quickly secretly becoming a Bank just in time for the Bailout money and positioning themselves to benefit from Bush’s Bill of giving funds to any company that has an office on the World Trade Center site. It’s so easy to fool people when no one is given the information or they don’t better to ask what’s going on. This is the first time Americans have been given transparentcy and we have to look back to see what we missed. Obama will get his Bill and all the protection he spoke of just have a little faith and remember the wing nuts are working you.

December 22nd, 2009 at 4:57 pmGood points in your last post, Zooey. It occurs to me that the bill that passed the Senate is, indeed, a bipartisan bill in the sense that it was hammered out by the sixty senators who were committed to reform health insurance. In past decades, many of these sixty senators would not have been considered democrats; however, they are probably more fiscally conservative than many of the republicans who served as lapdogs for GDumbya, the drunken sailor who occupied the Oval office for eight years prior to this past January.
Those in the Senate who have an R after their name (and one with an I), played out their knee-jerk reactionary obstructionist game and they lost. But the Blue-Dogs and the moderate democrats and the truly liberal democrats really did produce a “bipartisan” bill.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:58 pmMy question is: if it was scored the same without the PO, and the PO wouldn’t kick in for 4 or 5 years and wouldn’t be cheaper (based on the CBO analysis) what’s the problem?
The impetus for changing the system was outrage at costs – if costs don’t at least stabilize (if not come down) over the next 3-4 years the pressure will not go away. If the current bill doesn’t do the job Democrats DAMN WELL better amend it so it does.
Since medicare has some serious flaws (for instance fraud – does the current legislation fix medicare’s massive fraud problem?) I recommend fixing medicare first and THEN try to convince the rest of the country that they should sign up. I’m 100% for reform but it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to realize it’s hard to garner support for a plan everyone readily admits is very imperfect itself.
December 22nd, 2009 at 4:58 pmperhaps you could point to a fraud-free example, which medicare administrators could emulate to solve that??

Sure, as long as you forget that the independent middle always wins elections. Bringing out a stronger base only makes a difference if the middle is evenly divided.
However, I keep bringing this question up to right-wingers, and they always skulk away: how about Ron Paul or Bob Barr? From what I can see, “true conservatism” as the teabaggers use it isn’t a clearly defined term. And all attempts to define it coherently end up sounding like straight-up libertarianism. So why not just go pure libertarian? They even score well among younger voters, a significant weak spot for the GOP.
Now, I disagree with libertarians, but only because I think their philosophy won’t work in practice. Republican-style right-wingerism is not only unworkable, but also incoherent and hypocritical on a number of fronts. So at least you’d be making a step in the right direction.

In your opinion. In your opinion. My opinion is that McCain isn’t POTUS because he got smoked. Obama beat him by 6 or 7 percentage points in the popular vote and almost 200 electoral votes. That’s a big, big win.
You seem to think Repubs are on the come here. Where exactly do you think that happens? Where is their new power base? They’re losing the southwest, they have no chanced in the Northeast, no chance in California and no chance in New York. They’re losing further ground in the Great lakes area and the demographics are going the wrong way for them in Florida. They’d have to gain 40 votes to retake the House and more than 8 Seats to take the Senate. Younger voters coming into the electoral system are overwhelmingly more liberal than what has been considered normal. Boomers becoming seniors are more liberal than seniors have traditionally been.
You and your conservative friends don’t seem to know what’s going on around here.

December 22nd, 2009 at 5:27 pmDid Obama push hard publically for the public option? No. The real questions are SHOULD he have done so, what would the political implications be if he had done so, and did he push for the public option in private? We can all (and I include progressive Congressmen in this) be arm chair quarterbacks about this. But Obama is the one in the best position to hear both public and private sentiments and he is the one that has to make the calculations on what is doable. Ultimately, even with Obama as the best damn cheerleader in the land does anyone really believe that the outcome would have been different? I don’t. The Republicans would have been at least as oppositional. The Blue Dog Democrats would have had increased pressure from back home to be even more oppositional. And Lieberman would have, well, been Lieberman. By being too much out in front, Obama would have been spending a considerable amount of political capital and set himself up even more to be the “uppity ni**er” in the White House. The bottom line is that Obama is the primary force for this debate getting started and getting this far. As much as I like Feingold and Weiner, I disagree with their blaming Obama for this. It’s their branch of government that didn’t pass a more progressive bill. And let’s not forget what “progressive” means. Getting the debate this far is progress and success breeds success (unless we eat our own and take away their political capital).

It’s been a slow afternoon, so I can take a few moments to dissect your drivel:
“You “progressives” are attempting to make light of the events of 2009…”
– Make light? You mean we don’t take the events of this past year seriously? Well, you’re partly right. The teabaggers, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, and trolls such as yourself have given us plenty to laugh at. But we take seriously such issues as health care, the environment, and Afghanistan.
“…but I can sense your depression radiating through the computer.”
– If your computer is emitting radiation in sufficient quantities for you to sense it, you might want to get it replaced. It could be dangerous. In fact, it might be affecting your brain already.
“Because deep down you know your time in the sun is already coming to an end.”
– We’ve heard this before. In fact, you trolls have been throwing this at us ever since the midterms of 2006. It’s just your delusional thinking. Will the Democrats remain in power forever? Probably not — no party ever has. But there won’t be any serious competition until the Republicans figure out what’s wrong with their party and fix it, or until another viable party forms. And at the rate the GOP is going, it will be awhile.
“November 2010 will be here in 11 short months and you will begin to cede power.”
– It’s normal for the party not occupying the White House to gain seats in both houses of Congress during the mid-terms. But at the rate the GOP has been kicking people out of the tent, any gains are sure to be smaller than average, and there’s a good chance the GOP will lose even more than they already have.
“And in 2012 you will relinquish the White House.”
– When your number one candidate is Sarah Palin (according to the latest Washington Post poll)? Don’t make me laugh.
“The right wing and independents are already against you.”
– The right wing has always been against progressives. That’s hardly new, nor is it a threat. A few independents have aligned themselves with the teabaggers (the ultra-conservative ones), but most of them are fleeing the GOP tent and their “purity” tests.
“And now many of you are backing away from “your” president because he isn’t radical enough.”
– I think you’re confusing legitimate criticism with “backing away”. See — unlike you kool-aid drinkers, we speak up when we disagree with our leadership. Do you know what that means? It means we disagree with him on a particular issue, or maybe even just one aspect of a particular issue. Do not interpret this as our abandoning him, or that we suddenly wish we had McCain and Palin running the country.
“Very interesting to watch the progressive base cannibalize its own.”
– Who’s getting cannibalized? What you’re seeing is disagreement. Nobody’s getting cannibalized, nobody is getting thrown under a bus, nobody is being left to twist in the wind. That’s what your party does.
“But its good to see the ideology fail so quickly.”
– Our ideology hasn’t failed at all. We may have had to compromise on some legislation to get some of what we want (and guess what — that’s usually how the system works), but the basic ideology is intact and will continue to drive policy, making gains for the better in our country.
“America will be better off without you!”
December 22nd, 2009 at 5:32 pm– This remark is so stupefyingly idiotic, it can stand on its own without rebuttal.

December 22nd, 2009 at 5:33 pmOn the subject of giving up…
I’m starting my own personal crusade to completely overhaul the campaign finance system.
Starting with Maria Cantwell, Patty Murray and Jay Inslee.
Starts with a law that established public funding.
Continues with restrictions on lobbyist access and influence on the legislative process.
Continues with a law that gets around the Supreme Court ruling that $$$ in campaign donations = Free Speech/1st Amendment.
We can go after Health care in 2010, put in a public plan by majority vote after we remove a few more centrists, so donations to opposition democrats in primaries is also on my radar.
December 22nd, 2009 at 5:33 pmNot giving up. Except to continue to donate funds to this administration for their half-measures of legislative achievement.
fvny thinks the tea party will save him but what it’s doing is fracturing the republican party.

December 22nd, 2009 at 5:45 pmFor the troll who thinks Obama’s ratings are “historically low.”
Truman at this point in ‘52 was at 36%; Kennedy around 55, just like Obama; GHW Bush around low 50’s and GW Bush’s numbers were lingering in the high 40’s until the 9-11 attack. Without that attack, he’s still under 50.
From AP: “Reagan, like Obama, got approval ratings in the high 50s and low 60s during most of his first summer in office,” Holland said. “But as unemployment remained high, Reagan’s approval rating dropped below 50 percent for the first time in November of 1981, and it stayed under 50 percent for the next two years.”

This is an extra-specially ironic bit of projection here seeing as how the modern conservative movement just crashed and burned during the last few years and proved, once again, that their political and economic philosophies simply do not work. All modern conservative accomplished was bankrupting the nation, ratcheting up the poverty and incompetently blowing both dealing with natural catastrophes and military conflict.

December 22nd, 2009 at 6:16 pmThe data on trolling suggests it’s a combination of low self-esteem, a desperate need for attention, and a lack of control over one’s situation.
For example, according to this study, a good percentage of malicious trolls have problems with bedwetting and erectile dysfunction. It’s entirely possible that TP’s trolls can’t control their bladders or their erections, but take solace in ranting and raving against the “libs” they blame for all their problems.
It’s a fine irony that they come here in such hope of “pissing off those durn libs” but all they do is make us laugh at them or pity them for exposing the depth of their deepseated emotional problems.

The public grew impatient after giving Carter only four years to try to fix the Nixon/Ford mess that the country was in, and that was a damn shame. You’re giving Obama less than one year to fix the Bush mess? It sounds unlikely that you are actually concerned with getting a progressive agenda passed, or in sticking through the hard work that it’s going to take to do so.
And predicting mass victories for multiple cycles by the teabaggers? That sounds suspiciously like Rovian “create your own reality” tactics favored by all wingnut trolls.
Also, you misspelled Barack as “Barach.” I find it a consistent theme in wingnut trollery that they have a hard time bringing themselves to spell Obama’s name correctly.
If you actually were a committed progressive, having gone through the Barack/Hillary primary battle, as well as the Nader situations of 2000 and 2004, you’d at least have a passing familiarity with the risks involved in just chucking in the towel, giving up and wandering off to look for a third option. December 22nd, 2009 at 7:40 pmThe dates ARE ALL AFTER the election, when Obama had stopped campaigning. Hello….
December 22nd, 2009 at 7:44 pmIs this thing on?
In a key question, the survey also asked if an increased government role in the health care system would “lead to more corruption? Less corruption? Or will it make no difference?”
A vast majority of 62% said it would be the cause of “more corruption”, only 14% said “less corruption”, with 21% believing it would “make no difference.”
Those numbers echo a host of other recent surveys that have revealed up to two thirds of Americans are set against the government healthcare overhaul, set to be written into law at the eleventh hour on Christmas Eve.
That hasn’t prevented notable Democrats denouncing the bill’s opponents as extremists and fringe lunatics, as Senator Sheldon Whitehouse put it in a floor speech yesterday

If you’re going to call somebody a “dumba$$”, try not to do it while saying things like “though process”. It just makes you look like an even bigger dumba$$. Just saying…

You think that, huh? I’m sensing another Operation Chaos troll. The standing order regarding lobbyists serving in administration positions still stands. The President does not have the ability to banish lobbyist influence from Congress.

I’ll just give you the full Google search in response, since there are too many links countering your cherry-picked and leading poll question to choose from there.
The fact that certain wingnut memes (like “government = corruption”) are still prevalent in much of the public mindset doesn’t make them true. And the public is beginning to wake up from their wingnut stupor and become actually educated on the facts.

Way to stand against corruption! I take it you’re against the health insurance industry’s corrupt practices as well? P.S. Where’s your link?
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:04 pmThat’s a perfectly viable alternate theory.

I love this. The one time he says something that actually makes sense, it turns out it was “mimicking the progressive thought process.” STORM, I recommend you try “mimicking” actual cognitive understanding more often. You might eventually pull off passing for a sentient human being.
December 22nd, 2009 at 8:27 pmSam Stein has a well-researched take on the OP issue.
December 22nd, 2009 at 11:32 pmPresident Obama has said on more than one occasion that the public option wasn’t critical to health care reform. That position is counter intuitive to me, at least in terms of lowering health insurance premiums. He has a lot of credibility. He would do well to explain to us political dummies what realities are driving the process, and exactly why a public option isn’t critical.
December 23rd, 2009 at 3:29 amObama has betrayed middle class America. He has surrounded himself with the Wall Street honchos who were to blame for the financial disaster to hit this country. As President he could have stood firm for a public option, he could have stood firm on a Medicare buy-in but he remained MUM on the subject. He is taking us into an extended war in Afghanistan and so far all his policies are for the benefit of the banks, insurance industry, Wall Street and war profiteers.
Golden Boy Emmanuel is the guiding force behind Obama’s political decisions and the reason Howard Dean-one of the best people to speak on our behalf on health care- has been snubbed by this admin.
You have lost all credibility with me Mr. President. Instead of coming out with charismatic speeches to woo us why don’t you show some backbone and lead this country in the right direction.
I have unsubscribed from your emails as what you say no longer represents what you campaigned on. What a disappointment you have been to the many people who really fought to get you elected and to the many Americans who really wanted to believe that you would fight for us
December 23rd, 2009 at 12:17 pmIt’s so pleasant that I’m not a troll anymore. Or AM I?
Have we seen the light then?
