Ugandan official on gays: ‘Killing them might not be helpful’; life imprisonment would be better.
Reuters reports that Uganda may “soften” its Anti-Homosexuality Bill, a draconian attempt to severely punish gay men and women by making some homosexual acts punishable by life imprisonment or even the death penalty. However, Ethics and Integrity Minister Nsaba Buturo is now saying that officials may drop the death penalty in order to impose a “life sentence” on gay men and women, during which time they could work to cure them of their sexual preferences:
Ethics and Integrity Minister Nsaba Buturo told Reuters that the revised law would now probably limit the maximum penalty for offenders to life in prison rather than execution.
“There have been a lot of discussions in government…regarding the proposed law, but we now think a life sentence could be better because it gives room for offenders to be rehabilitated,” he said in an interview.
“Killing them might not be helpful.”
In recent weeks, Uganda has been facing intense criticism from Western government officials and religious leaders. Most recently, five GOP lawmakers wrote a letter to Ugandan President Yoweri Musaveni urging him to block the legislation, although they added that they still believe “marriage is an institution between one man and one woman.”

A couple of things to note…ex-gays are responsible for the ‘rehabilitation’ language and, considering that rehabilitation in America last century included shcok therapy and lobotomies, Uganda, if this passes, will now be consigning ‘convicted’ gays to a life of living hell.
Additionally, there are still plans to incarcerate Ugandans (including reporters) for failing to report those they know to be gay. Talk about draconian!

Actually Fred, I was using the vernacular that this particular sect of the religious right uses. Perhaps we should now refer to them as ‘execrable gays,’ though that would probably sound like bashing.
Interesting that the first major organization created by these folks, who supposedly were somehow ‘cured’ of their sexual orientation, Exodus, was founded by 2 men who later fell in love with each other and abandoned the group they started.
These people make a lot of money off of people who are self-loathing because of the daily bombardment of messages that disparage homosexuality.

“World police” refers to the intervention in other countries by force, whether with American military personnel or other means. It does not apply to pressuring other countries, to diplomacy or even to sanctions in the advance of human rights.

I’ve found that TP has a slacker work ethic than many other political blogs, particularly in terms of work hours. I am constantly reminded that most conservatives are conservatives because of the kind of people they are as opposed to any real political philosophy. I find it strange that the punishment of life imprisonment with the possibility of deprogramming rehabilitation is exactly what I recommend for fascist Republicans.
