Hoekstra Quickly Politicizes Attempted Terrorist Attack, Suggests Obama’s Clueless On National Security

hoekstraYesterday, the White House announced that there had been “an attempted act of terrorism” aboard a trans-Atlantic Northwest Airlines flight arriving from Amsterdam as it was preparing to land in Detroit. The suspect — identified as a 23-year old Nigerian man named Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab — “certainly thought he was trying to take down the plane,” according to a White House official.

The suspect reportedly had explosive powder taped to his leg and tried to light it on fire. He told investigators he was given the device by al Qaeda operatives in Yemen. “This guy claims he is tied to al Qaeda, specifically in Yemen,” the official said. “He claims he was on orders from al Qaeda in Yemen. Who knows if that’s true?”

Two passengers aboard the plane noticed the attempted attack, and “a third person jumped on the man and subdued him, an airline official told NBC News.” Flight attendants ran to get the fire extinguisher and the fire was soon doused. One passenger, Syed Jafry, remarked, “It was the time to be proud to be an American for sure.”

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI), the ranking member on the House intelligence committee and current candidate for governor of Michigan, saw an opportunity to score quick political points:

“It’s not surprising,” U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, a Holland Republican, said of the alleged terrorist attempt to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight in Detroit. … “People have got to start connecting the dots here and maybe this is the thing that will connect the dots for the Obama administration,” Hoekstra said. [...]

Hoekstra hadn’t yet been briefed on the incident but said he is already calling or the Obama administration to meet with Intelligence Committee members to fully inform them about the alleged terrorism attempt at the Detroit airport.

In an effort to try to prove his case for why the Obama administration is failing to “connect the dots,” Hoekstra issued this condemnatory tweet last night:

Picture 1

While Hoekstra hadn’t been briefed, his colleague Rep. Peter King (R-NY) was. And King — the ranking member of the House Homeland Security Committee — wasted no time alerting the media to much of what he was told. King rushed to Fox and CNN last night to begin issuing blame against security officials who allowed the suspect to board. “His name was in a database indicating significant terrorist connections,” King said, adding, “I’m not trying to be a Monday morning quarterback here…but let’s see what was missed.”

The Obama administration announced that “additional security measures are being taken in response to the incident, without raising the airline threat level.”

Update The attempted terrorist attack on the Northwest Airlines flight Friday fell "almost to the day eight years after another failed solo attack" by the so-called "shoe bomber" Richard Reid.

Yes–the President did not check this passenger before he boarded the plane. It is his fault.
The repucks can hardley cover their hard-ons over this one. Another of Cobrurn the PIMP’s, prayers has been answered.

  3. eyesopen says:

As long as Hoaxstra is scoring, has he bothered to measure the number of American terrorist victims while his party was on watch compared to the number of American terrorist victims while anybody else was on watch?

  4. angels81 says:

Well, this sounds like another nut acting on his own. How brainless can you be to set yourself on fire, what did he think was going to happen? The only thing he would have done to the plane, was burn up in his seat. He could have hurt a few people around him, but as far as bringing the plane down, that wouldn’t have happened. The plane was already on approach and had its landing gear down when the nut stared to burn.

If this is all al-Qaeda has, I think we may have to rethink the threat they pose. I guess this guys hero must have been the shoe bomber.

  5. angels81 says:

So, the vote down baby, by voting me down, must be saying he/she/it supports the terrorist and his attempt to burn the plane down.

  6. KayInMaine says:

It wouldn’t surprise me in the least if Hoekstra knows the Nigerian terrorist. Just saying…

  7. KayInMaine says:

And wasn’t it under the Bush Regime that allowed small amounts of liquids and lighters to be brought on planes AFTER banning them after 9/11? Yes, I think so!

  8. carolannie says:

Please tell me what a Holland Republican is? Is is of Dutch ancestry? He represents Holland (in what state of the Union might that be)?

OK, then, how about this: on whose watch did Reid try to ignite his shoes?

  9. KayInMaine says:

Carolannie, you have to remember….what happened on George Bush’s watch was Bill Clinton’s and President Obama’s fault. See? This is the theory of the conservatives and they’re sticking to it!

  10. Mugsy says:

How is this any different from Richard Reed (the “shoe bomber) that tried almost the exact same thing on Bush’s watch???

I didn’t hear Hoekstra blaming that incident on “Bush’s incompetence”.

  11. Ricardo Alverez says:

Worst terrorist attack on American soil: Under bush’s watch

You can never live that down, repugs. No wonder they’re praying for another terrorist attack. Sick minded people they all are. Every last one of them.

  12. EnnuiDivine says:

“Attempted terrorist attack. Oh, really now. Do they give the Nobel Prize for ‘Attempted Chemistry’?”

Poor Pete. Like any and every politician using social media, they fail to grasp how thoroughly ridiculous and uninformed they come off when posting on Twitter or Facebook.

And Hoekstra’s still lagging in the polls. He’s giving up his position as ranking member on the House Intelligence Committee to further his political career. Sure sounds like someone is putting self before the security of the country and playing politics with national security.

Yo Congressman Dorkstra. Was Barack in Amsterdam doing pat downs of all the passengers on this flight? Is that how its his fault? Seems to me if anyone is at “fault” its the lax security in the Amsterdam airport. Or, come to think of it, the airline itself.

  15. Badmoodman says:

King rushed to Fox and CNN last night to begin issuing blame against security officials who allowed the suspect to board.

    – - You can always depend on King for terrorist hysteria. And you have to wonder why someone named Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab who’s on a no-fly list could have gotten through security with an explosive contraption strapped to his leg.

Or are we only as safe as the Nigerian TSA equivalent allows us to be?

  16. bob h says:

This half-assed attempt should not distract us from the real terrorist danger today-that from our domestic, deranged right-wing. The passage of healthcare is probably stoking the nutjobs into paroxysms of rage and resentment, into a period of maximum derangement, and I hope those protecting Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are on their toes.

This failed attack is apparently a reaction to the Obama administration pressure on the Yemeni terrorists. In that way this shows that Obama is having success in fighting these guys. As far as the Republicans are concerned, they will of course try to make political hay out of it like they did with the Somali pirates, until Obama had the Navy seals take the pirates out. Then they shut up.

  26. Hoodathunk says:

I am so tired of this grand standing. Do these idiots stand on the street corner and shriek because the police don’t stop every murder, every kidnapping, robbery, rape and crime? 30. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Hmmm…We are still waging Bush’s war on terrorism around the globe. We are still waging war in and occupying two countries that were initiated by the Bush administration. We are using the Bush FISA laws, Patriot Acts I & II are still around, yet we still have attempted terrorist attacks in our country.

Perhaps it was the Bush regime who was absolutely clueless about National Security. Perhaps Obama is following in his cluelessness by waging all out war on countries, instead of organizations who commit the crime of murder threw the act of terrorism.

One thing for certain is that during President Obama’s first nine months, we didn’t have a 9/11 type of attack in our country and the latest attempt was defused (no pun intended).

It’s kind of hard for the republicans to criticize a democratic president who for the most part has kept us safe and has also continued Bush’s method of war and surveillance.

History still shows us that 9/11 occurred under the watch of GWBush, who ignored all the warnings. History still shows that the unsolved anthrax attack occured under GWBush watch. History still shows that Reid tried to set his shoes on fire under the watch of GWBush. History still shows that under GWBush, lighters are again allowed on planes.

I say history still shows, because I expect the repugs to complete their re-write of history within the next three years, and all of this will no longer be true.

The 2000 Millennium threats that were thwarted by Clinton will to be credited to GWBush. The terrorism that occurred under GWB will be ascribed to Clinton and Carter, maybe even JFK. The terrorism attack that didn’t occur yesterday will be associated with Obama for a hundred years.

While the majority of Republicans are grateful that the attack was thwarted, there are certainly a minority out there that would’ve hoped for a successful terrorist strike, just so they can get on the mount and proclaim that Obama is weak on national security and that we need to continue the policy of rendition and torture that put such a dark stain on the soul of the country.

It’s looking like this failed attack was retribution for our airstrike in Yemen, which was retribution for al-Qaeda blowing up the Cole and killing 17 of our sailors. Given the rhetoric coming from certain members of the opposition, it’s sure sounding like some in our country are rooting for al-Qaeda…

Rumsfeld was pushing for more money for a missile defense system on 9/10/01. Cheney wasn’t concerned about terrorism. The old bulls were still fighting the Cold War.

  48. Wiz says:

Dick Cheney spoke up within days of the beginning of the Obama administration indicating that Republicans were indeed hoping for a terrorist attack for political advantage. The terrorists have what they think are legitiment grievances about the US action, (which I disagree with of course), but Republicans grievances with Obama are only about how they are eager to politicize every event for their advantage. In that sense the comparison of the motives of Republicans may not be as evil as those of terrorists, but they are certainly more cynical.

  215. tarazan says:

According to CNN latest news…this Nigerian got his multiple visits visa in June of 2008..that’s when Bush was still a president.
Now MSNBC says that this Nigerian was on the wanted list for over 2 years.
CNN says that his father called the US embassy lateley and cautioned that his son has been radicalized..
All happen just in time when Obama started a new war front in Yemen to help Saudi Arabia, where this guy supposed to have taken his orders, according to media outlets.
Now how did a guy like this get a visa, travel from Europe(Amsterdam) undetected…?
Taxpayers are entitled to a refund on their investment in security if that’s true.

One question I have is…is gurl short for guerrilla or gorilla. I suspect either would be untrue.

  219. zxbe says:

Fox is already putting their spin on it, of course. Just look at the slanted “You Decide” feature on the website. The question and options:

Is Enough Being Done to Protect Us From Terror Attacks?

Yes. I believe they’re doing all they can to protect Americans from acts of terror.

No. I think the Obama administration has been ignoring the ever-present danger of terror.

Not sure, but I’m very concerned that a 9/11-type of terror attack will happen soon.

    Undecided

Notice how in the negative answer, they mention Obama by name, but in the positive answer they don’t seem to want him to get credit. A classic push poll.

No surprise where the bulk of the responses are, given that it’s Fox.

But the thing I wanted to really draw attention to are the comments. The meanest, nastiest, dumbest set of comments I’ve seen in a while.

Click Here for the poll. And you may have to then click on the comments tab.

  220. EnnuiDivine says:

    Zxbe,

Wow. The FoxNews crowd really do swallow talking points whole. Anyone who uses “pre-9/11″ to define a period of time is a hack, a fraud, and a neo-con.

These people couldn’t wait for Cheney to impose martial law…

  222. Fontsdeleon says:

Here’s an example of connecting the dots.
    PNAC created in the 90s.
In 2000 an election controversy happens in a state where the governor is the candidates brother. The governor is a signatory of PNAC document.
A conservative candidate is appointed president by a justice who embraces the same political mindset as the candidate.
2001 terrorists attack happens just as PNAC document called for.
Patriot Act created. Although resisted by certain reps., an anthrax attack happens that speeds up acceptance of Patriot Act.
2 wars are set in place. PNAC document called for multiple theaters of war.
Rumors of involvement by oil execs are leaked.
The rest has been the nightmare come true. And it’s still not over.

  223. What the GOP REALLY means ... says:

    Hoooooek …. spit

  224. Jackie says:

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) worked well with the Bush Administration and helped bring this chaos over the 8 years. Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI) knew Saddam had no WMDs or Mushroom Cloud but kept on lying. He knew the CIA let the 20th highjacker leave because they didn’t believe him, yes even the order not to capture Osama Bin Laden was known to Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI).

  225. dasm says:

#62 – you’re not far wrong– the U.S. has demanded that all

  226. nofltwlt says:

Hoekstra is a complete blithering idiot!

This is the case of the pot calling the kettle black. Obama hasn’t presided over an intelligence agency that ignored repeated warnings of Arabs learning to fly, but not land, airliners.

What a f–king dope! Peter, everyone knows what you really object to, the fact that the GOP has lost it’s Mo-Jo.

It’s obvious that you are a Republican, you are too lazy to think. If you refresh the page, your vote will magically appear.

I guess they didn’t teach you any critical thinking skills at your Home School.

  229. Ape-Man says:

If you want to be understood you gotta stop using the word terrorist.

  230. Ape-Man says:

No freaking out over this, or the burnt dude from Nigeria wins. No babbling on TV by the Chaney gang either please POX, CNN, or this dude wins. get it? booga booga booga!

Check people out better before they board, and check all the baggage. That’s the kind of response we’re looking for from this by everyone involved.
Not a fright fest like the Republicans would relish and the Chaney gang would froth over, or the burnt dude wins, and the MSM wins too [conflict of interst alert!!].

Dear MSM, no more Boogga Boogga or we loose, you win [and the burnt guy wins too].

  231. Ape-Man says:

Dear MSM, please, please, simply, just, only, help us ensure each person and package is checked before we board. that is all. Thank you.

[we already knew this guy would come along, we just didn't know what day, just as we don't know when the next guy will come along.] What we need is a reasoned response to a self defeating phenomenon. Somehow the Bushies managed to get a blazing bonfire of a phenomenon started and left it to the rest of us to put in out. It’s obviously not out yet.

We need to stop calling it a war on terror or nobody will be understood. these are also suiside attemps – come on Republican idiots! like the Bushies – now they’ve got Perino preaching her sermons all about “terrorists”.

  232. Popatop says:

    KayInMaine says:
Carolannie, you have to remember….what happened on George Bush’s watch was Bill Clinton’s and President Obama’s fault. See? This is the theory of the conservatives and they’re sticking to it!

No, you got that wrong, see, according to libs Nothing bad happened under Clinton, you know, that whole “8 yrs of peace and prosperity” thing? Now that Obama’s in charge, anything bad was “inherited”

  233. Ape-Man says:

Sorry! It’s not Perino shilling on CNN, it’s Townsend. she is quite excited and animated, but she keeps talking about terror and terrorism and terrorists. I think out burnt Nigerian is a dime a dozen religious Martyr. what do you think?

  234. Ape-Man says:

Another thing: The RepubliCNN TV is really making a mountain out of a Martyr today. I hope this isn’t a trend, or the 21 year old Martyr wins, as does the RepubliCNN corp. by the way. this sets up an obvious conflict of interest between the people and RepubliCNN corp., in that the RepubliCNN must milk the Martyr story for all it is worth, but in doing so it is perpetuating this Martyrdom in the process.

We must be looking straight at RepubliCNN corp. on this one.

Same thing applies to RepuliFOX and RepubliNBC! it’s the beginning – their story to tell. Will this be a safety check, a reminder to tighten inspections at the airports, or will they turn a crazy burnt Nigerian into the Martyr he hopes to be while making extra money by doing so? I really hope they consider this and let it affect what they do this week!

Like the Kobar towers, USS cole, embassies in Yemen, Tell me again about the peace? I’m surprised you guys haven’t figured a way to blame Bush for this latest terrorist, just like the Ft. Hood terror attack was blamed on him.

My GOD you are stupid. Were those wars? You cant stand it that your moron president started useless wars and tanked the economy. You brainwashed cretins are just funny. Yeah there were terrorists that attacked us and we fought back. What we DIDNT do was start a useless war that tarnished our image and condemned innocent people and American soldiers to death so the most ignorant people on the planet like YOU clearly are can cheer. You morons just LOVE to see Americans DIE. Its always party time at your house when Americans are dying. You are just another sick depraved brainwashed moron.

  242. mari2RR says:

Hmmm, operating under the same rule, we must also hold G. W. Bush totally responsible for 9/11, assuming that G. W. was clueless on National Security. Right? After all G. W. was inaugurated early in the year of 2001 and many months later, in fact in September, the bombings of 9/11 took place. As my mom used to quote in the old saying, “What is good for the goose is good for the gander”. Therefore, I am glad that this noted Republican finally admitted that it was G W’s lack of leadership that allowed 9/11 to happen. Obviously Bush did not keep us safe, eh?

Considering Bush started it all with the illegal war in Iraq, I’m STILL happy he’s gone. :D I STILL shudder imagining how worse it would be if Obama wasn’t around working to clean up Bush’s mess. McCain would have KILLED this country continuing the Bush policies.
