On CNN today, GOP strategist and former Dick Cheney adviser Mary Matalin argued that President Obama is speaking too much about the severe debt, deficits, and economic recession he inherited from the previous administration. Defending her former boss, Matalin charged that President Bush had in fact “inherited a recession” and the September 11th attacks from President Clinton:
MATALIN: I was there, we inherited a recession from President Clinton and we inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation’s history. And President Bush dealt with it and within a year of his presidency within a comparable time, unemployment was at 5 percent.
Watch it:
In reality, the terror attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center occurred on Sept. 11, 2001 — eight months into President Bush’s first term. Also, the 2001 recession technically began in March of 2001, well after Bush assumed office. Last month, former Bush administration spokesperson Dana Perino claimed that “we did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush’s term.” Former Bush administration officials seem intent on misrepresenting history to pretend that the country never suffered its worst terror attack in history under Bush’s watch. It’s a peculiar talking point, even considering the other efforts to whitewash Bush’s disastrous record.
Well, not the first time Ms. Matalin and the GOP said that…

Is it me or is she looking like Carrie Fisher?
December 27th, 2009 at 1:37 pmOh, PUH-LEEEEEEEEEEASE!!! That’s the biggest load of horseshit EVER.

Is it me or is she looking like Carrie Fisher?
On her best day right after the plastic surgery healed, she hasn’t looked that good.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:39 pmStupid old bat. And why is CNN letting her on to say this garbage? I thought CNN was commie news network? I thought you cons said all networks are liberal except fox?
December 27th, 2009 at 1:40 pmThe only person Chimpy inherited 9/11 from was his ugly old father Poppy Bush. Keepin’ it in the family, so to speak.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:40 pmApparently the first class taken at Rethuglican U. is history revisionism 101. Spin spin spin.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:41 pmShe’s lying about the first part too. That recession began in March 2001. Therefore, the Bush administration did not inherit a recession.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:43 pmEven the Bush robots are having a technical malfunction after hearing Matlins assertion. They know their calendar and they know how to count from Jan. 01 to Sept. 01. They know that the terror attacks happened on Bush’s watch – and are Bush’s fault, but if you throw them too much nonsense at once, they will take it and run all the way to the Faux News funny farm.
They know it is BS, but they will take ANYTHING which seems to remove any responsibility on the Bush WH. IOKIYAR
December 27th, 2009 at 1:43 pmYou’d think that these people who wanted power so bad they stole an election would accept a little responsibility for what happened while in office.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:44 pm…we inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation’s history…
It was Bush’s “hands off” strategy on Middle East peace talks, a 180 degree reversal of Clinton engagement, plus choosing a military leader (Colin Powell) as Secretary of State. Then there was the 2001 World Conference Against Racism where the US Delegation left the floor with the Israeli Delegation over charges of racism by Zionists. That’s what triggered the attacks.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:47 pmInherit? What does that mean that his daddy gave it to him like everything else he ever had?
December 27th, 2009 at 1:48 pmstewarjt says:
You’d think that these people who wanted power so bad they stole an election would accept a little responsibility for what happened while in office.
A genetic mutation occurred in the genes of the GOP. They never can take responsibility for anything. They see themselves as the strong and brave, not the diaper wearing, frightened cult they have been turned into.
A sad, slow downward slide into the ashcan of history.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:48 pmMatalin and Perino are from the Joseph Goebbels school of political propaganda: “If you tell a lie big enough and repeat it often enough, people will come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or moral consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent …”
December 27th, 2009 at 1:55 pmThere they go again, trying to create their own reality. Matalin’s hoping that with the national ADD and help from her friends at Fox, nobody will remember anything that happened 9 years ago.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:55 pmNever mind that terrorism was the furthest from the “minds” of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld in the summer of 2001. Bush’s response to a CIA agent’s report of an imminent al Qaeda attack in 2001 “You’ve covered your ass. You can go now.” Cuz Bushie needed a big vacation after 7 months in office. It’s haaard work. Cheney dissed Richard Clarke’s concerns about terrorism cuz Cheney wanted to fight the Cold War again, this time with China. Rummy wanted a gazillion dollars for the missile defense shield. “Every penny” he said. And they all wanted to invade Iraq before the 9/11 attacks and were looking for any way to justify it.
Inherited the 9/11/01 attacks from Clinton, my ass.
Keep in mind, this woman probably voted for The Worst President Ever™ TWICE.
December 27th, 2009 at 1:57 pmFascists revisionist history and nothing more. She belongs in prison for spreading propaganda. Republicans have no shame.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:00 pmYou’re right Cal but I don’t think it will work for them anymore.
I think they cried wolf one too many times, which was inevitable. They are much better out of power, they always expose their failures when they actually get the opportunity.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:00 pmOops, fascists should be the singular fascist.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:01 pmIs it me or is she looking like Carrie Fisher?
No. I think she’s looking more like an aging mAnn Coultergeist and she’s channelling Micky-the-Merkin Malkin.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:01 pmSeriously, what self-respecting republican doesn’t fully believe that “Clinton did it”?
December 27th, 2009 at 2:04 pmWell I guess then Obama inherited terror as well…because Bush spent 8 years squandering the good will after the 9/11 attacks, even to the point that the Iranians were holding candlelight vigils for the victims…Personal responsibility is only for Democrats, liberals, TEH GAYS, whatever…the party of personal responsibility strikes again…
December 27th, 2009 at 2:06 pmWhat the Fu*k?

Well, if I were a Republipimp, and worse, a Republipimp who’d been sitting in the executive branch, on 9/11/2001, I wouldn’t really like to admit having been blindsided. I’d like to blame it on someone else. And if I’d screwed up the response to being blindsided by going off to war in an arena not very fracking well connected to said blindsiding and producing a real FUBAR there, as well as underresourcing the screwed up response somewhere else, I’d really really want to blame it on someone else.
Mary Matalin and her pals in Shrub’s administration, as well as Shrub & Darth, should have been fired sometime between the Tora Bora debacle and the invasion of Iraq. But no, we’re going to get to watch them rewrite history so that none of it was their fault. It’s all Obama’s fault ’cause he gave a mildly dissenting speech as a state senator in Illinois; what could be better than blaming it on someone who wasn’t even in federal office at the time.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:12 pmIt’s a peculiar talking point, even considering the other efforts to whitewash Bush’s disastrous record.
but, it’s been around a looong time…
since about 9/13ish, at least…

but it had nuttin’ to do with warnings and hair on fire and all the rest…
December 27th, 2009 at 2:17 pmBush apologists need to make these kinds of arguments because they know that Bush will be regarded by history as among the worst Presidents this nation has ever had. He has the worst national security record of any President. He has among the worst foreign policy records. The worst national debt. His term in office is bookended with recessions. His administration not only turned a blind eye to human rights abuses, but actually perpetrated them itself. And, his time in office was marked by failed wars, failed responses to natural disasters, poor fiscal policy, a weak dollar, energy crises, and a loss of America’s standing in the world.

December 27th, 2009 at 2:20 pmUSCKitty–You’re absolutely right. Iran offered its help to “W” in catching those responsible for 9/11, even going as far as turning over to the U.S. some people living in Iran who were connected to al Qaeda and the WTC attack. Bush proceeded to turn his back on the Iranians, eventually making Iran part of his axis of evil. IMHO, he turned down the help because he had plans to invade Iraq and probably knew Iran would object. There is so much that the average American doesn’t know about the Bush Administration. I wish Americans were more inclined to research topics/issues rather than being swayed by the latest soundbite(s.)
I’m sure the Fuchs Noose viewers believe GWB inherited a recession from the Clinton Administration, and that some of them believe 9/11 was Clinton’s fault. I’ve read their inane rantings on blogs that show that they’re in complete denial of the amount of damage that GWB has done to this country.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:21 pmThese people are all lying scum. Every last one of them. F*%k all of them!

December 27th, 2009 at 2:38 pmIs it just me or do these Republican pundits of the female gender all look like they have od’ed on Botox so they can say these sorts of things with a straight (frozen) face?
December 27th, 2009 at 2:39 pmMary? Yes, over here, Mary.
Focus. Thank you, dear.
Now, what did we say about the corpse face? That’s right, it’s not a good look for you.
Yes, I know you’re sorry. I guess it’s hard for you to remember that after using it for 20 years, botox numbs your brain as well as your face.
Give me your phone, I’m going to delete the plastic surgeon’s number. Yes, I’m afraid I’m going to have to take drastic measures if you don’t give me the phone. What am I going to do? Well, for starters, no blindfold when you’re having sex with James. Yeah…that got your attention, didn’t it?
Ok, the number is deleted. No more botox, dear. Next time we’ll talk about makeup tips.
Chin up, dear. Give us a smile.
**screaming**
Yes dear, I know I asked for a smile. I won’t do that again…
December 27th, 2009 at 2:39 pmTalk about a squandered opportunity, majii. The Iranians resented the U.S. for its interfering in its own matters. While we may forget the 1953 coup that overthrew a democratically-elected leader, the Iranians have not. They have not forgotten, but to think that they could express such sympathy and offer us that much help, I cannot help but to feel sick about the opportunity we had to reach out to them as well…
December 27th, 2009 at 2:42 pmBeing in the party of “personal responsibility” means never having to say you’re responsible…for anything.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:44 pmMattMORON is a liar. MattMORON KNOWS he is a liar. See when Matt first came here he actually TRIED to make sense. He just told the lie like the punkass troll he is. Its all about the troll provocation of an attention whore. I have wasted enough of my time on this pathetic loser.

Of course, NOT Matt…
December 27th, 2009 at 2:47 pmThe dishonesty of these tools is astounding…

U-3 in Sept 2001: 5.0%
U-3 didn’t hit 5.0% again until July 2005!
So full of poop.
December 27th, 2009 at 2:50 pmDirty “humor” has no place in serious dialogue.
As opposed to using hand grenades to bringing people to Jeebus?
December 27th, 2009 at 2:51 pmThe unemployment rate for ‘99 & ‘00 were about 3.9% to 4.3%. It *increased* to 5.7% under Bush’s administration. How could she not have known that? [Admittedly, the seeds for much of the last economic cratering were sown with the .com bubble, the housing bubble, and 'creative' bank finance. Much of which resulted from bad bipartisan banking regulation reform in the Clinton era.]
And the Bush administration also inherited warnings about Al Quaeda and Osama bin Laden. The Clinton administration had used cruise missiles against AQ targets in Afghanistan. And the Bush administration had warnings that commercial airlines could be weaponized.
It’s not ignorance on her part. She is willfully stupid and lying. How long can people loudly emit these bald-faced lies? (I disagree with those who say “Oh, they’re not lying… ” YES – THEY ARE!)
December 27th, 2009 at 2:51 pmJust how far does a wingnut have to go to be blacklisted from these cable news shows? This is complete and utter bullshit, and if CNN had an ounce of journalistic integrity, they would tell Ms. Matalin that her days there are over.

“Also, the 2001 recession technically began in March of 2001, well after Bush assumed office”
What Bush DID inherit was a speculators’ market.
When the Internet ‘exploded’ in 1995 the DOW stood at 3.750 points. By 2000 it stood at 11.500!
The rate of increase was driven by speculation in the new dot-com market.
The dot-coms themselves were actually quite a small portion of the market, but they engendered a lot of speculation elsewhere because their potential effect was believed to be probably universal.
Citing March 2001 as the start of the recession may not be accurate (though I gather it is ‘official’)–at least going by the DOW.
From December 2000 to March 2001 the DOW dropped from 10,800 to 9,900–an 1100 point drop, but only 10% of the total market.
In April it rebounded to 10,900 then dropped to about 10,500 in JULY.
By September it dropped from the JULY mark of 10,500 to 8,800, or 2000 points (20%).
From September 2001, DESPITE 9/11 which supposedly caused so many problems, the DOW then ROSE to 10,400 by about MARCH ‘02.
9/11 caused problems for Main Street, but NOT really for Wall Street. HOWEVER, having driven the DOW up and down for a year, Wall Street decided to cash-in, take their profits and then hoard.
In March of ‘02 the DOW stood at 10,400. By September ‘02 it had dropped to 7,600, a 2,800-point drop.
Bush’s TX breaks then didn’t stimulate the general economy, it only stimulated the speculators to use their money again JUST to speculate AND cash-in more regularly as they did so. at the same time.
In October ‘07 the DOW hit 13,930. By the time Obama took office it was at 8,500–a 7,100 point drop, or 50% of the index.
So just using the DOW as a general indicator:
BUSH inherited a 1,100-point drop/10% of market.
OBAMA inherited a 7,100-pint drop/ 50% of the market.
The poor got poorer, the middle class became poorer but the rich got richer, under BUSH.
December 27th, 2009 at 3:08 pmNOW the rich are claiming poverty, but it;s only relative to the rate at which they accumulated wealth under BUSH—at the general public’s expense of course.
Oh, please… Spare me.. Sorry Mary but you must be suffering from time warp in the date of the 9/11 attack. Obama inherited your boss’ 8 year mess. Can’t change history. And get a reality check, Mary, and quit overdosing on the koolaid.

December 27th, 2009 at 3:37 pmIt never ceases to amaze me how those involved with the GNOP LIE, SPIN and SMEAR and this is allowed, maybe even encouraged on MSM.
Doesn’t the true record show and in writing:
- Bush had clear documented warning the terrorists were going to attack and PURPOSELY ignored it.
- on page 51 of PNAC it clearly states we needed another Pearl Harbor in order for the American public to accept what was written in that document.

Now it was Obama who ordered the bailout for Banks and even ordered torture as he open Gitmo. When Republican spoke people say something they expect to be believed. Now after Tony Blair’s testimony in his hearing we’ll hear the GOP say Obama was President and ordered Blair to lie and illegally invade Iraq to help Halliburton which if Cheney was VP he would have stopped it. None-the-less, there it is. Well, you need to review the story. It is *two* guys – part of what drew the attention is one of the guys looking at the movie, and one of the guys going to the bathroom while the seatbelt light is on, but another attention getter is an argument or loud discussion in a “foreign language” between the two. And the FBI or TSA or someone did search the aircraft and survey the baggage – probably ran an explosives sniffing pup through the cargo hold.
But yes, both were released, apparently in a very short time, and the aircraft, with or without them – that isn’t specifically detailed – went on to San Diego.
Funky Slippers is just trying to attract attention to – what? His own racist conspiracy theories? Conspiracy theories about Middle Easterners all being involved in tearerismo and plots against people on airplanes? WTF, indeed.
December 28th, 2009 at 1:47 am@ 191. Oh, the story does say right there in the headline, “Two passengers detained…”.
It’s too damned bad for Funky Sneakers that there’s less there than meets the eye.
December 28th, 2009 at 1:50 amcheney almost got his christmas present i see. he’s been wanting a terrorist attack on america since day one. he might have paid him lol….. jk(not)

December 28th, 2009 at 7:49 amThe real question is, what/who is making a person of above average intelligence prop up George Bush, which flies in the face of, and in contrary to, the facts.
December 28th, 2009 at 9:40 amHe inherited an obvious False Flag incident from his fellow Neo-Conservatives?
or was it that story about 19 cavedwellers with box-cutters learning how to fly airliners?
What do you think?
December 28th, 2009 at 9:57 amMore lies from the harpy of falsehoods; what was more telling was how neither Carville nor King corrected her by calling her on these absurdities.
December 28th, 2009 at 11:23 amTime for some historical review of what actually happened:
The first terrorist bombing attack on the WTC happened 30 days into Clinton’s first term. There is no record of Clinton or anyone in his administration blaming the previous administration for this attack. The perps were investigated, captured, tried, convicted and imprisoned by Clinton’s Justice Department.
For the next eight years, the record shows that terrorism was a major concern for the Clinton administration. They passed on the results of two commissions on making the country safer which the Bush administration ignored. They told members of the Bush administration that bin Laden would be their main threat – they ignored that too. The repub congress had not only not helped, but spent over $100 million investigating the Clintons on a variety phony accusations that never amounted to anything and accusing them of using terrorism as a diversion from their crimes (which the record shows didn’t exist.)
For the first 9 months, the Bush administration held NO MEETINGS among high level people about terrorism. In spite of 55 specific warnings from the FAA, 5 or 6 specific warnings from our CIA and numerous specific warnings from the intelligence agencies of other countries, including Israel, someone in the Bush administration told NORAD to stand down.
December 28th, 2009 at 11:29 amFrom all appearances, it seems the women of the GOP (1)can not think for themselves,(2) have no clue what is going on in the world (3) believe everything that their men tell them………
December 28th, 2009 at 11:59 amNot only did the recession NOT start until March of 2001, but there is ample evidence that the Bush administration immediately precipitated it. Again, to review, the record shows that energy traders based in Texas basically destroyed California’s economy with a phony “energy crisis.” You don’t slam the world’s 7th largest economy and not have repercussions.
Bush and his crooked Texas friends wiped out the California economy with an energy scam and kicked off his first recession.
December 28th, 2009 at 12:50 pmI bet she really knows what happened on 911.

Clinton could have had Osama on a silver platter but didn’t take it.
Yeah, and why do I think that back then you would have been screaming “Wag the Dog!” like Sean Hannity when Clinton lobbed some missiles into Obama’s camp .
December 29th, 2009 at 12:06 amYou’re probably one of those weirdos (Karl Rove for example) who puts their ideology or their team ‘winning’ before the good of the country.
Keep in mind too that not only was Richard Clarke screaming about al Qaeda activity, FBI agents in Minneaplolis and Phoenix were warning about pilot training where the student pilots did not want to learn about take-off and landing procedures and just 5 weeks before 9/11 Rice and Bush were given a PDB dated August 6th warning about al Qaeda wanting to hijack passenger jets. The pieces were all there except nobody wanted to be bothered so 3,000 Americans died with another 4,500 killed in the optional Iraq war. Matlin should not go there because she doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
