Mary Matalin claims President Bush ‘inherited’ the September 11th terror attacks.

On CNN today, GOP strategist and former Dick Cheney adviser Mary Matalin argued that President Obama is speaking too much about the severe debt, deficits, and economic recession he inherited from the previous administration. Defending her former boss, Matalin charged that President Bush had in fact “inherited a recession” and the September 11th attacks from President Clinton:

MATALIN: I was there, we inherited a recession from President Clinton and we inherited the most tragic attack on our own soil in our nation’s history. And President Bush dealt with it and within a year of his presidency within a comparable time, unemployment was at 5 percent.

Watch it:

In reality, the terror attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center occurred on Sept. 11, 2001 — eight months into President Bush’s first term. Also, the 2001 recession technically began in March of 2001, well after Bush assumed office. Last month, former Bush administration spokesperson Dana Perino claimed that “we did not have a terrorist attack on our country during President Bush’s term.” Former Bush administration officials seem intent on misrepresenting history to pretend that the country never suffered its worst terror attack in history under Bush’s watch. It’s a peculiar talking point, even considering the other efforts to whitewash Bush’s disastrous record.

It was Bush’s “hands off” strategy on Middle East peace talks, a 180 degree reversal of Clinton engagement, plus choosing a military leader (Colin Powell) as Secretary of State. Then there was the 2001 World Conference Against Racism where the US Delegation left the floor with the Israeli Delegation over charges of racism by Zionists. That’s what triggered the attacks.

Never mind that terrorism was the furthest from the “minds” of Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld in the summer of 2001. Bush’s response to a CIA agent’s report of an imminent al Qaeda attack in 2001 “You’ve covered your ass. You can go now.” Cuz Bushie needed a big vacation after 7 months in office. It’s haaard work. Cheney dissed Richard Clarke’s concerns about terrorism cuz Cheney wanted to fight the Cold War again, this time with China. Rummy wanted a gazillion dollars for the missile defense shield. “Every penny” he said. And they all wanted to invade Iraq before the 9/11 attacks and were looking for any way to justify it.
Inherited the 9/11/01 attacks from Clinton, my ass.

  59. 5th Estate says:

“Also, the 2001 recession technically began in March of 2001, well after Bush assumed office”

What Bush DID inherit was a speculators’ market.

When the Internet ‘exploded’ in 1995 the DOW stood at 3.750 points. By 2000 it stood at 11.500!

The rate of increase was driven by speculation in the new dot-com market.
The dot-coms themselves were actually quite a small portion of the market, but they engendered a lot of speculation elsewhere because their potential effect was believed to be probably universal.

Citing March 2001 as the start of the recession may not be accurate (though I gather it is ‘official’)–at least going by the DOW.
From December 2000 to March 2001 the DOW dropped from 10,800 to 9,900–an 1100 point drop, but only 10% of the total market.
In April it rebounded to 10,900 then dropped to about 10,500 in JULY.

By September it dropped from the JULY mark of 10,500 to 8,800, or 2000 points (20%).
From September 2001, DESPITE 9/11 which supposedly caused so many problems, the DOW then ROSE to 10,400 by about MARCH ‘02.

9/11 caused problems for Main Street, but NOT really for Wall Street. HOWEVER, having driven the DOW up and down for a year, Wall Street decided to cash-in, take their profits and then hoard.

In March of ‘02 the DOW stood at 10,400. By September ‘02 it had dropped to 7,600, a 2,800-point drop.

Bush’s TX breaks then didn’t stimulate the general economy, it only stimulated the speculators to use their money again JUST to speculate AND cash-in more regularly as they did so. at the same time.

In October ‘07 the DOW hit 13,930. By the time Obama took office it was at 8,500–a 7,100 point drop, or 50% of the index.

So just using the DOW as a general indicator:

    BUSH inherited a 1,100-point drop/10% of market.
    OBAMA inherited a 7,100-pint drop/ 50% of the market.

The poor got poorer, the middle class became poorer but the rich got richer, under BUSH.
NOW the rich are claiming poverty, but it;s only relative to the rate at which they accumulated wealth under BUSH—at the general public’s expense of course.

    - on page 51 of PNAC it clearly states we needed another Pearl Harbor in order for the American public to accept what was written in that document.

“They better not board any muslim on any plane that I have to fly ’cause I’m “profiling” and I’ll b1tch to the flight crew if they’re even breathing my air!”

If you’ve ever flown on a plane that was at least half full then you’ve flown with a Muslim already. Are you really planning to walk the aisle and ask every passenger what their religion is? How will you know who’s the Muslim? OH! I get it! You’re one of those empty headed racist turds who still things that “Muslim” is an ethnicity. It’s not you dummy, it’s a religion. Muslims can be white too you moron. Besides, the suspect in this case was African (i.e. black), are you suggesting we ban all black people from flying because of the outside chance that they might be a Muslim? What are you talking about????

Because George didn’t get Osama that means he’s responsible for the next 9/11.

Clinton could have had Osama on a silver platter but didn’t take it.

“Propaganda is to a democracy what the bludgeon is to a totalitarian state.”
—Noam Chomsky, Media Control: The Spectacular Achievements of Propaganda, 1997

Once again, you have shown that you are incapable of original thought. Hannity’s repeated that lie like 1000 times…Who said that once a lie is repeated loudly and endlessly, it becomes truth? Oh btw, Shall I kill myself?

  175. madstork123 says:

    Of Course Mary is right.

We all remember how President Clinton sat in that chair and looked stunned then continued reading “My Pet Goat” when he was told about the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon.

And who could forget the heroic speech Clinton gave at the site of the WTC with that bullhorn? Remeber how Clinton rallied a stunned America on that day?

Let’s not forget Clinton landing on the aircraft carrier in 2003 in gave that “Mission Accomplished” speech in front of the banner on the tower.

Well we people who live in reality don’t remember Clinton doing any of that. Because he wasn’t the president!!! Mary’s boss Chimpy was.

Stupid revisionist Republican. You’re entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts.

  176. NinerFan says:

One more time, a golden oldie: on the day Clinton was 45 minutes late in his attempt to kill bin Laden in an Afghanistan training camp, the President had been forced to spend the entire morning answering the Special Prosecutor’s questions regarding oral sex. Conservatives criticized Clinton for what they called is “preoccupation” with bin Laden and even referred to his attack on bin Laden as “wagging the dog.”

Why didn’t republicans in Congress aid Clinton in fighting terrorists and why have they never been held accountable?

Oh they were fighting terrorism…Apparently, the biggest terrorists back then were the millions of Clinton’s sperm…

When Mary Matalin was a little baby, her mother must have dropped her numerous times on her head. Matalin hasn’t been able to tell the difference between good and evil ever since.

    @ 166. Levi …

What set off the other passengers is that they were arguing, loudly, and in a “foreign language”.

Actually, it was *one* passenger, and they were suspicious because – get this, one of the guys was watching “what looked like a suicide bombing” when it was actually the movie “Kingdom” and the other went to use the bathroom while the seatbelt sign was still on.

    http://www.miamiherald.com/news/florida/AP/story/1400006.html

BTW, contrary to F-’s report, both were immediately released and there was no search of the plane.

  181. Virtual Pebble says:

    @ 190. bluesunflower …

That Miami Herald story is basically the same story that The East Valley Tribune posted; in fact, the Trib may have put it on the wire and had it picked up by the Herald.

None-the-less, there it is. Well, you need to review the story. It is *two* guys – part of what drew the attention is one of the guys looking at the movie, and one of the guys going to the bathroom while the seatbelt light is on, but another attention getter is an argument or loud discussion in a “foreign language” between the two. And the FBI or TSA or someone did search the aircraft and survey the baggage – probably ran an explosives sniffing pup through the cargo hold.

But yes, both were released, apparently in a very short time, and the aircraft, with or without them – that isn’t specifically detailed – went on to San Diego.

Funky Slippers is just trying to attract attention to – what? His own racist conspiracy theories? Conspiracy theories about Middle Easterners all being involved in tearerismo and plots against people on airplanes? WTF, indeed.

  182. Virtual Pebble says:

@ 191. Oh, the story does say right there in the headline, “Two passengers detained…”.

It’s too damned bad for Funky Sneakers that there’s less there than meets the eye.

cheney almost got his christmas present i see. he’s been wanting a terrorist attack on america since day one. he might have paid him lol….. jk(not)

buy her account if anything happened pbo would have inherited that attack right? vegas wouldn’t take odds on that.

The real question is, what/who is making a person of above average intelligence prop up George Bush, which flies in the face of, and in contrary to, the facts.

  185. ctcadguy says:

He inherited an obvious False Flag incident from his fellow Neo-Conservatives?

or was it that story about 19 cavedwellers with box-cutters learning how to fly airliners?

    What do you think?

  186. jrfunkenstein says:

More lies from the harpy of falsehoods; what was more telling was how neither Carville nor King corrected her by calling her on these absurdities.

  187. NinerFan says:

Time for some historical review of what actually happened:

The first terrorist bombing attack on the WTC happened 30 days into Clinton’s first term. There is no record of Clinton or anyone in his administration blaming the previous administration for this attack. The perps were investigated, captured, tried, convicted and imprisoned by Clinton’s Justice Department.

For the next eight years, the record shows that terrorism was a major concern for the Clinton administration. They passed on the results of two commissions on making the country safer which the Bush administration ignored. They told members of the Bush administration that bin Laden would be their main threat – they ignored that too. The repub congress had not only not helped, but spent over $100 million investigating the Clintons on a variety phony accusations that never amounted to anything and accusing them of using terrorism as a diversion from their crimes (which the record shows didn’t exist.)

For the first 9 months, the Bush administration held NO MEETINGS among high level people about terrorism. In spite of 55 specific warnings from the FAA, 5 or 6 specific warnings from our CIA and numerous specific warnings from the intelligence agencies of other countries, including Israel, someone in the Bush administration told NORAD to stand down.

  188. lvdragonlady says:

From all appearances, it seems the women of the GOP (1)can not think for themselves,(2) have no clue what is going on in the world (3) believe everything that their men tell them………

  189. NinerFan says:

Not only did the recession NOT start until March of 2001, but there is ample evidence that the Bush administration immediately precipitated it. Again, to review, the record shows that energy traders based in Texas basically destroyed California’s economy with a phony “energy crisis.” You don’t slam the world’s 7th largest economy and not have repercussions.

Bush and his crooked Texas friends wiped out the California economy with an energy scam and kicked off his first recession.

  190. ctcadguy says:

Yeah, and why do I think that back then you would have been screaming “Wag the Dog!” like Sean Hannity when Clinton lobbed some missiles into Obama’s camp .
You’re probably one of those weirdos (Karl Rove for example) who puts their ideology or their team ‘winning’ before the good of the country.

  192. DallasNE says:

Keep in mind too that not only was Richard Clarke screaming about al Qaeda activity, FBI agents in Minneaplolis and Phoenix were warning about pilot training where the student pilots did not want to learn about take-off and landing procedures and just 5 weeks before 9/11 Rice and Bush were given a PDB dated August 6th warning about al Qaeda wanting to hijack passenger jets. The pieces were all there except nobody wanted to be bothered so 3,000 Americans died with another 4,500 killed in the optional Iraq war. Matlin should not go there because she doesn’t have a leg to stand on.
