Fox News Host Promotes Newt’s Call For Profiling: ‘Profile Them! What’s Wrong With That?’

Yesterday, Newt Gingrich joined the right wing’s hysteric attacks on President Obama regarding Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab’s failed attempted to blow up a U.S. airliner over Detroit, calling for more “profiling” and “discrimination” and saying that the Obama administration is more interested in “protecting the rights of terrorists” than “protecting the lives of Americans.”

This morning on Fox News, Gingrich tried to clarify his comments. “We have to be prepared to profile based on behavior, not ethnic profiling, not racial profiling but look at people’s behavior,” he said. Later, host Alisyn Camerota signed on to and promoted Gingrich’s plan:

CAMEROTA: I haven’t heard a single person talking about any kind of racial profiling. It doesn’t say “Muslim” on a passport. [...] But anybody who travels all the time recognizes how ludicrous it is to frisk your grandmother. She’s not the risk. But somebody who’s let say been in Yemen in the past year. I’d say profile them. Profile them! What’s wrong with that?

Co-host Dave Briggs asked, “Should we body scan everyone at the airports?” “I’d say yes,” he said answering his own question, adding, “If it keeps me and my family safe, go ahead an invade their privacy.” Watch it:

Yesterday on NPR, even former Bush Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said profiling is a bad idea, calling it foolish, particularly in Abdulmutallab’s case:

CHERTOFF: I’m going to argue that this case illustrates the danger and the foolishness of profiling because people’s conception of what a potential terrorist looks like often doesn’t match reality. In this case we had a Nigerian, for example, not a person from the Middle East or from South Asia. If you look at the airline plot of 2006, two of the plotters were a married couple that were going to get on a plane with a young baby. The terrorists understand that the more they vary the kind of operative they use, the more likely they’re going to be able to exploit prejudices if we allow those prejudices to guide the way we conduct our investigation.

“I think it’s not only problematic from civil rights’ standpoint, but frankly,” Chertoff said, “I think it winds up not being terribly effective.”

    Off-topic –

In the true spirit of the Irrelevance in Broadcasting Network, I submit this obituary for the Head Gasbag who is now hospitalized for yet another drug overdose. This obit may be premature at this point but, mark my words, Limpballs’ days are numbered. I can’t claim total credit for it. After all, it is much the same as Limpballs’ own commentary about Senator Edward Kennedy on the occasion of his death:

“The self-proclaimed lead dog of right-wing radio rant-jockeys died today as a result of a life of drug-addiction and excess. Rush Limpballs was a popular opinion- and hate-monger to his brain-dead dittoheads who listened to his daily rant-fest. A total hypocrite for his entire life, Limpballs used to say that all drug addicts should be locked up — until his own drug addiction became public knowledge. Then he shut up about it which is understandable because he never recovered from his own addictions. Instead, he bragged about drinking ‘adult beverages’ and continued his illicit use of oxycontin until his dying day. Most reasonable people knew that he never recovered because he continued to be a grandiose, resentful, hate-filled, deceitful a**hole on his daily program right up to the end. Much as Tiger Woods’ fans, the dittoheads are mourning today because they have finally learned that their hero, Limpballs, was not the person that they thought he was. The thrice-married and divorced gasbag did finally succomb to his sexual predelictions later in life when he began taking frequent sex tourism trips to the Dominican Republic to diddle little boys. This became known when customs caught him with Viagra pills not prescribed for him upon his re-entry into the U.S. Limpballs was once called the ‘leader of the republican party’ — a once-popular but now defunct political group of tea-baggers and incompetents. Many feel that he killed it and this may be the only constructive legacy of his otherwise pathetic and meaningless existence.”

  5. EugeneDebs says:

There are several things wrong with it. From a civil rights issue it turns Muslims into second class citizens. We didnt begin to profile white American Christians after McViegh. Also it is plainly stupid and ineffective. How are you going to profile Muslims? Blacks because of Central African Muslims? Semites because of Arab Muslims? South Asians because of Indonesian Muslims? It pretty much leaves only Native Americans and White people out of the mix. WAIT what about Serbian Muslims? Albanian Muslims I guess whites need to go into the mix too. It is another of those stupid rightwing ideas. One that doesnt really MAKE anyone safer just makes them FEEL good that they are attacking someones rights who doesnt look like them so they, in their cowardice, will FEEL safer

One look at history for the past few hundred years or more clearly indicates that white men have been war-mongering, invading other people’s countries and killing those around them in far too large numbers to ignore. They cling together in groups promoting the supremacy of people of their skin color, and kill others who don’t look like they do….

    Yep, profiling, great idea.

  8. had enough says:

Indeed we need to profile. Let’s begin with terrorist Newt for starters.

an article about a group after 9/11 that mass mailed anthrax to abortion clinics -

The hundreds of threatening letters sent to abortion clinics, believed to represent the largest group of such mailings, have jarred nerves at organizations that are accustomed to dealing with threats. Whereas previous threatening letters from the Army of God mentioned a subgroup called the Virginia Dare Chapter, recent anthrax threats have referred to the Virginia Dare Cell, a term sometimes used to refer to terrorist groups.

hopefully this isn’t the reason our parody troll chose that name.

The emphasis is mine, but I think it’s the most telling part of the statement. This guy doesn’t want HIS privacy invaded, but it’s okay if we violate someone else’s for HIS sake. These people need to understand that you have to have a balance between freedom and security, and that balance is a lot more delicate and difficult to maintain than they want to admit.

Newter has something here – if we had started profiling with the Oaklahoma City Bombing – there wouldn’t be any right-wing nutjobs running around loose anymore!

  18. MapleStreet says:

Uh Newt, using your grandmother logic, you wouldn’t think a 6 month old in a stroller is a threat. Therefore you don’t search the stroller ? Would that be right ?

In that case, you’d be wrong as folks know that infants look innocents and like to hide things in strollers.

Any time you profile, you just let the bad guys know to hide their stuff in the cache that is “safe”.

If you use full body scanning, all they have to do is stick the C4 in their backside to get past the body scanners. In mid flight, go to the restroom, retrieve the C4, etc. (In fact, I can’t figure out why the shoe bomber and the underware bomber didn’t just light the stuff in a restroom on the periphery of the jet.)

And thinking of Oklahoma city, perhaps we should profile the blond-haired, blue-eyed ?

Here it is more than 8 years after the 9/11 attacks and the various agencies responsible for security still aren’t talking to one another. This shows that the Homeland Security Department is a bust. It was revealed that last year the Dutch were ordered not to body scan people bound for America. That is more than enough time to work out the issues with privacy and the need to have two lines for these body scans. One handled by females for female passengers and another handled by males for male passengers.

    .

    Mr.Duke says:

How do the police find criminals? They do a profile of the possible suspects.

Actually, not so much. First of all, racial profiling isn’t profiling. Secondly, demographic profiling doesn’t proactively find criminals, it only makes a guess about what they’ll be like to compare against whoever gets indicted for the crime. Thirdly, even the “hit rate” on whether or not that guess was accurate is historically very poor.

  26. Serg909 says:

  27. Hoodathunk says:

So, since the possible suspects range from white through black and into brown, religion is Western Abrahamic, age is indeterminate then we should include…everyone?

Oh wait, no toddlers as yet nor octogenarians. Whew, that narrows the field considerably.

A lot of the national security measures put in place by the Bush administration were done on the cheap, smoke and mirrors, in plain site.

Seeing Abu the foreign looking guy or an 89 year old Grandma getting frisked by airline security is an image which is suppose to make us believe our government is doing eveything to keep us safe.

In reality you are correct. 8 years after 9/11 and there are still walls up between the FBI, CIA and the NSA. But have no fear the colossal, mega department of homeland security will make us all safe and our country secure.

Again I repeat, done on the cheap, all image, smoke and mirrors…

  30. Bobwurst says:

    Mr.Duke says:
How do the police find criminals? They do a profile of the possible suspects.

Only on “CSI Hicksvlle” Real police get an actual description of the subject, use evidence, etc. to find the suspect. And suspect means the person is suspected, not already convicted because the police are looking for him or her. idiot.

Rounding up the usual suspects and throwing them all in jail is illegal. idiot. Frisking people because they look like criminals, or gangbangers is illegal. idiot. But if that’s what you want, then fine. The only people in this country that are committing acts of terrorism are conservative white males. Have fun when the cops waterboard you…

With some many feeling profiling is ok I wonder what these same people would think if Americans were profiled in other countries. Just think the Middle East and Asia could have profiling for a person with an American name, white blue eyes and etc. We saw what happen when the US profiled African Americans. I remember in New Jersey a State Trooper shot and killed several young men because they drove an nice SUV. Later they learned the young men were college students as one was a basketball player, one studing Religion and the others A students, not the profile of gang members as labled.

The majority of the German population did indeed “profile” the Jews, in believing and spreading a variety of bigoted lies about them. Ditto in many other countries as well, including America. Antisemitism was not something that the Hitler regime invented and then foisted on the populace. It was already widely prevalent throughout the world and in Eastern Europe in particular. Hitler merely exploited existing prejudices.

I agree with your initial premise that government should not enact social bigotry into law. But you seem to think that there is nevertheless an appropriate place for bigotry, that it should be privatized or something. I maintain that bigotry should be opposed wherever it is found.

This whole thing is being used as an excuse to attack Yemen for our pals, the Saudis.
    http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2009-12/29/content_12720296.htm

Fearing instability in Yemen could turn into a security threat for Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest oil exporter, Saudi troops began attacking Yemen’s Shiite rebels in early November after the rebels staged a cross-border incursion and killed two Saudi border guards.

Wait, if Saudi Arabia and the United States are helping Yemen with their own rebel problem, that isn’t exactly the same thing as “being at war with Yemen.” That’s more like an international agreement to help with police enforcement.

Calling anti-terrorist activity “war” only serves to legitimize terrorism. The terrorists want to think they’re just one side in an actual war, rather than mere criminals. Apparently the wingnuts do too.

    _____________________________________________________________

Either you’re a parody troll who’s finally getting better at it, or you’re more of a narrow-minded simpleton than I thought possible.

A terrorist — a REAL terrorist who’s bent on causing an act of violence once the plane is in the air — is going to do everything he can to get on the plane. He will blend in with all the other passengers as much as possible, and will do nothing out of the ordinary to attract attention to himself. If he’s asked to spit on a picture of Saddam Hussein, he’ll do it (and since Saddam was generally despised by Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups, that’s not asking a lot). Your “profiling” would accomplish nothing except to demonstrate your general stupidity.

Which brings us to another aspect of profiling. Terrorist groups can adapt remarkably well to any kind of profiling put in place. Profiling on the basis of Arabic sounding names? The next terrorist will be somebody from Indonesia. Or Malaysia. Or somebody named Richard Reid. Profiling on the basis of wearing “Muslim” clothing? The next terrorist will be wearing clothing he bought at Aeropostale. Profiling on the basis of skin color? The next terrorist will be as white as possible. No terrorist group is going to send anybody on a suicide mission who would likely be caught by a profile net.

This is why, instead of profiling people who fit a stereotype, extra scrutiny is given randomly. Being able to sail through security is never a sure thing, no matter who you are.

In short, the security is full of sound and fury to make us feel good that we’ve done something. But as effective as “duck and cover” from the nuclear era or plastic and duct tape from Bush.

    _____________________________________________________________

I suspect that if terrorist acts on airplanes become more frequent, then body scans will become the norm.

When I was a kid, it was unheard of to go through a metal detector to get on an airplane (and if you want a laugh, rent the movie “Airport” — it was made before the metal detector era). However, the number of airplanes hijacked to Havana in the 1970s at gunpoint made it necessary to screen for weapons.

So what will happen when everybody gets x-rayed on their way to the plane? Some good things — not only will bombs and explosives concealed on someone’s person be revealed, but drug mules won’t be able to conceal their cargo, either. But the airline business will suffer overall as people decide that getting somewhere by airplane isn’t worth the invasion of their privacy (and yes — I consider any machine that can tell if I’m wearing a tampon or not to be invasive).

Business travelers, fortunately, will find their need for travel going down as technology allows them to conduct meetings remotely (as a bonus, this saves their company a ton of money, too). Leisure travelers will stick to vacation destinations they can get to by car. Or they will spring for chartering a small private jet for that special family trip. Commercial airlines will go bankrupt. Manufacturers of commercial aircraft will either go bust or they will retool themselves for the small jet trade.

Commercial air travel will still survive, but it will eventually become like Greyhound or Amtrak — a single company serving dwindling traffic, as private travel (or cyber travel) becomes the norm.

And the terrorists? They’ll find some other way to terrorize.

  146. ralph the wonder llama says:

This profiling question is one more example of the tendency of the right -wing to prefer emotionally satisfying measures over actually effective ones.

Profiling does no good if the traits screened for are independent of the actual behavior. In fact, it can even make the problem worse. Profiling for middle eastern muslims would not have caught this Nigerian man — which is one reason that terrorist networks are recruiting Africans for these jobs rather than Saudis or other Arabs. Profiling for muslim names is even less effective, since names can be easily changed or faked.

Yet our new militant friend, 2livejew, promotes these ineffective measures, and his tone suggests that he gets some emotional fulfillment out of this support.

What i get from that is that our friend is less concerned with actually controlling terrorism, and more concerned with punishing the people from which he assumes these terrorists spring, whether the people themselves have anything to do with the terrorists or not.

If you dig deep enough with these folks, it’s usually some form of punishment that is at the bottom of what they’re seeking. Which explains their infatuation with the Old Testament God.

  147. Hoodathunk says:

Very true, Ralph. The Right has shown they have no desire to solve problems. They could care less about finding the root causes of terrorism, they want to vent their frustrations. They want to feel justified and vindicated in their own shortcomings. They want to believe there are evil people who want to get them.

We are a pathetically Calvinistic society. We need to believe we are the best and we should be punished because we are.

  148. libertymatters says:

If history shows us that a large majority of people who perform terrorist acts are from one group and very few are from another group, it makes sense to me to put more resources into screening the former and using only random screening and routine procedures on the others.

Or am I expectin too much common sense for an operation run by the government?

  149. 2livejew says:

The one overriding factor to anything else is that the nigerian had ties to radical islam that would have been the first red flag this type of Profiling works great for isreal.

If history shows us that a large majority of people who perform terrorist acts are from one group and very few are from another group, it makes sense to me to put more resources into screening the former and using only random screening and routine procedures on the others.

It makes sense, if the impulse to perform terrorist acts is dependent on the traits of that one group.

Terrorism obviously knows no racial or ethnic boundaries. You can profile middle eastern men, but then the terrorists will shift their recruiting efforts to non-middle-eastern men — Africans, in this case, and all the efforts you’ve put into profiling that one group will have been a big waste of time and resources, and it will have done is make it easier for the terrorists to bypass your screening process.

Sure, you can then — after the fact — start profiling the next ethnic group from which the terrorists draw candidates, and they’ll move on to the next. Asians, perhaps. The cycle continues until they start recruiting white Americans, like John Walker Lindh and you have to broaden your field one more time.

And at that point you will be forced to reverse course and narrow your profiling to personal history and behavioral traits, because all of your racial profiling has done nothing but expanded your pool of applicants.

So why not just start at that point?

  151. ralph the wonder llama says:

    2livejew says:

    Exactly.

That is a behavioral trait, an element of personal history.

It’s not racial in its focus. Racial profiling is a waste of time and counter-productive.

  152. Hoodathunk says:

If we want to look at how to deal with terrorism, we only need to look as far as the British Isles. For years England and Ireland waged fratricidal war against each other. The answer wasn’t bombs, guns and death. It was learning how to talk to each other.

I think I see your problem with reaching rational decisions. You don’t make them in a rational way.

You see, in the narrowly-described example you gave, the disease you made up seems to be dependent on the type of apple, as is the skin color of the fruit. The two characteristics are inextricably bound together.

In this situation, it makes sense to screen by appearance. If you start screening out disease-ridden green fruit, the apples are not going to decide for themselves to infect red ones in order to defeat your screening process.

Terrorist networks can do exactly that. You start screening out middle-eastern men, and the terrorist recognize it immediately. So they start recruiting sympathizers with a different look. Those operatives sail right through your screening process, because you’re not looking for them.

See how your analogy doesn’t work? It was probably emotionally satisfying for a few minutes, but it ultimately is not very useful in evaluating the problem intelligently.

  165. Hoodathunk says:

If nine times out of ten, green apples give you a disease, and you can only test four apples for this disease, would you test green and red apples equally?

A first and snide reply would be I would quit eating apples.

A more considered response would be, why are you afraid of apples? Might not pears or oranges also be a problem? what about shrimp? Peanuts?

What I am saying is, don’t assume because you got sick after eating a green apple that all apples are the thing to be afraid of.

  166. Xisithrus says:

    Here’s a test for you:

Lets do the Limbaugh test. If there is one overweight guy addicted to drugs shouldnt we profile all overweight males and suppose, for our safety, accuse and jail all overweight males, invade their privacy, until we can confirm they are not drug addicts that should be deported?

You know one of the reasons I enjoy visiting TP and saying hi to all of my friends here is because it reassures me about the bright, shiny future conservatism has in this great country of ours. Happy New Year TP!

    Yeah, me too.

Virginia… that’s a sexy name. Do you like long walks on the beach, Virginia? I do.

  168. Xisithrus says:

The moral of the story is dont eat unwashed apples from a cow pasture.

  169. Ricardo Alverez Aztec Warrior says:

But do eat mushrooms that grow from cow pastures. Clean them first, then cut them up and put them on a pizza or in a taco and youll have a good time.

  170. ralph the wonder llama says:

Hey, Cheech! No one’s buying your act.

  171. Xisithrus says:

And since Limbaugh is known to be a drug addict and a conservative we should put overweight conservative on all overweight males passports? Shouldnt we perform cavity searches on all overweight conservative males before every flight that originates the US?

Why, if we can only test four ‘apples’ the first apple:

    A1: Overweight
    A2: Conservative
A3: Divorced more than once [looking at you Newt, Rove]
    A4: Back Pain

  172. Badger says:

it reassures me about the bright, shiny future conservatism has in this great country of ours.

Perhaps among Older White Males…whose future is, shall we say, limited.

What about the “Other Americans”?? the Young, the non White, the Females…. who swept Obama into office, along with a Democratic Controlled house and Senate./??

  173. ralph the wonder llama says:

Virginia, you have nice breasts. I’m sorry… did I embarrass you? I didn’t mean to. It’s just that… I like green breasts. Especially when they’re perky like yours are.

We have a lot in common, don’t you think?

    Virginia?

    Do you like me?
    _ Yes
    _ No

  174. tarazan says:

    ‘……Profile them’.

But who are ‘them’ here? !!

Someone will say the Terrorists…but logic suggests that if we know that they are terrorists…then we will apprehend them.
How can the government profile people who smoke illegal drugs..
How can one tell by looking at them..?

The other issue here is the legality of all of this.
How can you write in practice a law like that without discriminating against thousands of people.

Since Fox continue to scare people…then selling profiling becomes easier..just like the guy said :”It keeps me and my family safe…”…willing to trade freedom with fear.
What’s left for travellers…to take their clothes off and travel naked to be protected ?.

The act of the Nigerian kid could have been prevented earlier before he even got on the plane .
It was simple if someone payed attention to what his father was saying.

  175. Ricardo Alverez Aztec Warrior says:

Ralph…COME ON? Cheech and chong? Can you stereotype anymore? I hate those movies.

  176. ralph the wonder llama says:

Virginia, don’t pay any attention to those other guys giggling over by the bleachers.

No, they didn’t put me up to this. I really think you’re cute. They’re just jealous, that’s all.

So what do you say? Wanna go for a ride in my truck? We can go get ice cream. Do you like ice cream?

    Virginia?

  177. ralph the wonder llama says:

Cheech, go away. I’m trying to make it with Virginia.

  178. Xisithrus says:

it reassures me about the bright, shiny future conservatism has in this great country of ours.

Well, I just applied the ‘purity test’ of real conservatives to your bio…and you failed. Sorry. Now get out of the tent.

  179. Xisithrus says:

Newt? Your out of the tent as well.

  180. Xisithrus says:

Say is that a pearl necklace Virginia has on in that pic RTWL..oooo, ewww, my bad, just bird droppings. Get out of the tent!

  181. Jamelia says:

Yes,we do need profile i guess

  182. libertymatters says:

Hoodathuk–Okay, so logic isn’t you strong suit. Remember, your not allowed to change the rules in order to win…

Xisithrus – To date, no conservative talk show hosts have attempted to blow up a plane. On the other hand, nervous Muslims with only a small carry-on bag or a one-way ticket paid for in cash do deserve a second look at the airport checkin. (That doesn’t me that our current screening methods should not be exercised on the entire flying public.)

  183. Xisithrus says:

Wait. This guy Griggs wants people to body scan his family and himself. Thats not profiling. Thats scanning everyone.

Whats next Disneyland type safety bars that drop over your shoulders and lock you into your roller coaster type seats?

  184. Xisithrus says:

Xisithrus – To date, no conservative talk show hosts have attempted to blow up a plane.

Doesnt matter if they body scan everyone does it? We are all terrorists, until body scanned.

  185. Xisithrus says:

On the other hand, nervous Muslims with only a small carry-on bag or a one-way ticket paid for in cash do deserve a second look at the airport checkin. (That doesn’t me that our current screening methods should not be exercised on the entire flying public.)

Your a terrorist until you are body scanned Nigerian, Muslim, American, Cro-magnon… whatever.

  186. Hoodathunk says:

libertymatters, what the hell are you babbling about?

  187. Xisithrus says:

You know what, Libertymatters, your not really for liberty if your idea of liberty is basically a police state. What the politicians are doing, using fear to get re-elected, enact legislation to protect you, is heading down the path of creating this super security appparatus that we will spend billions on only to look up one day and find out we didnt build a safe house, we built ourselves into a prison.

  188. Hoodathunk says:

To date, no conservative talk show hosts have attempted to blow up a plane.

No, they prefer to convince someone else to do their dirty work.

  189. Xisithrus says:

If our politicians care so much for your life and health why dont they ban tobacco that kills thousands every year, they dont care about your health when they take money from that industry now do they? And Im to think these same folks really care about protectin poor little me? I call BS.

  190. Xisithrus says:

Were all terrorists now and the DC cronys friend who builds and sells bodyscanners is thrilled and not because they will save any lives.

  191. Hoodathunk says:

Ralph, thank you for one of the most entertaining and hilarious experiences I have had on TP. Happy New Year, you crazy quadruped.

  192. Xisithrus says:

Hell, if they really wanted to stop the use of aircraft by terrorists they would outlaw airlines. They wont do that because you know, they are too big to fail. And when they put in all these bodyscanners they will find ways to put PETN in luggage and then no one can carry luggage at all and then they will strap us into the empty baggage bins.

And then to keep us safe we must all be sedated and loaded onto the plane like cadavers because some politician will have a friends that sells sedatives.

Or they will use anti-aircraft missiles shot from the end of a runway and some politicians who has a friend that builds chaffe pods will make legislation that all airlines install chaffe pods.

    It never ends.

  193. Xisithrus says:

And then we must all be cryogenically frozen and shipped via vaccum tubes deep underground cause some politicians friend has found a way to drill these tubes and freeze us like Ted Williams head.

  194. Levi the Oracle says:

I want to fly while frozen in carbonite like Han Solo.

  195. Xisithrus says:

Ever since the isrealis started profiling muslims there has been 0 hijackings curious there has been no hijackings done by christians even though they are not screened. But i guess those isrealis are white trash teabagger rednecks oh and homophobic too!

Yes El Al does profile their passengers, but there are other reasons for the zero hijackings and here are some.

Undercover agents (sometimes referred to as sky marshals) carrying concealed firearms sit among the passengers on every international El Al flight. All El Al pilots are former Israeli Air Force pilots.

The cockpits in all El Al aircraft have double doors to prevent entry by unauthorized persons. A code is required to access the doors, and the second door will only be opened after the first has closed and the person has been identified by the Captain or First Officer. Furthermore, there are reinforced steel floors separating the passenger cabin from the baggage hold. This is intended to strengthen the plane in case of an explosion.

  198. Xisithrus says:

I want to fly while frozen in carbonite like Han Solo.

    Heh.

I want to be frozen like Austin Powers and let the Dr Evil government drill into my genitals and steal my mojo

  199. Xisithrus says:

curious there has been no hijackings done by christians even though they are not screened

You know what, I dont live in Israel. But I did know/worked with a guy, his dad was a retired Delta airlines pilot. He was a mechanic, like me, and a white male, like me, and he went and sabotaged the flight controls [Horizontal stabilizer cables] on three 727-200 series aircraft full of fuel. Luckily none crashed. So dont give me this crap that profiling only certain people will stop sabotage because it comes in many forms and not from any one religion or race.

  200. linzloo08 says:

    2livejew says:

Ever since the isrealis started profiling muslims there has been 0 hijackings

    Citation, please?

Also, are you saying that every Muslim flying El Al gets searched? Because since that’s a significant percentage of the country and an overwhelming percentage of the region, I would think that would pretty much shut down air travel into and out of Israel. Such an extraordinary claim begs for another citation as well.

Lots of Christians have hijacked planes. Welcome to reality.

Oh okay. I totally forgot about the urban myth that Catherine the Great was killed whilst having sexual relations with a horse.

Actually that rumor was started because she tended to promote her boytoys to the position of Cavalry Marshal. Her dectractors just couldn’t handle the fact that she used her power in pretty much the way a man would if their positions were reversed (see Clinton, Bill).

    .

    2livejew says:

Yes if the grandmother is a muslim or from a muslim country than i would be worried.

That is because you are a bigoted person. Whether or not a prejudiced coward like yourself “would be worried” is no rational basis upon which to base public policy.

    .

    Virginia Dare says:

You know one of the reasons I enjoy visiting TP and saying hi to all of my friends here is because it reassures me about the bright, shiny future conservatism has in this great country of ours.

Me too. So I guess we have that in common. But if you see these items as demonstrating a “bright, shiny” future for conservatism, then I wholeheartedly recommend that you support such positions in the GOP party platforms and primaries in your local area. Get involved! And good luck with all that!

  202. linzloo08 says:

Reichwingers believe that terrorists should be profiled. Therefore, using Reichwinger logic, we need to start profiling anyone who is white, Xtian, and ultra-conservative.. Let them squeal once they realize that the tables have been turned on them..

    libertymatters says:

I note that the circle of people you’re defending as innocent keeps shrinking. I could respond by saying that to date no Imams have personally attempted to blow up a plane. Your move.

  204. dbadass says:

Oh Ohhh give me the emo style….

  205. MapleStreet says:

    222. ElBruce replying to libertymatters,

It may be true to say “no conservative talk show hosts have attempted to blow up a plane” How many acts of violence have been incited by the likes of Beck, Rush, et al. ???

It is just as true to say that no radical Imam has blown up a plane. For that matter, has OBL himself actually crashed a plane in the USA ? Or did he delgate the task ?

  206. AndyGra says:

Some years ago, I read a book from the public library. It was about a young Western man’s exploration of the ancient city of Timbuktu. The most salient thing that he noted was the local building of mosques by Arabian Whabbis. His observation, and critique this if you know more, is that the “outsiders” are promulgating a more fundamental, intolerant Islam through the means of their deep-oil pockets. They are building new spiffy mosques where before the local people relied on mud-brick and timber architecture and the local version of Islamic interpretation. And this sways people. This is a world-wide phenomenon. Leaving behind old local traditions to submit to a new glossy fundamentalism.
This is the root of Islamic intolerance. Note that Whaab(?) was an 18th century Saudi Arabian acetic, before it was Saudi Arabia (that was 20th c.)
SO! All I’m saying is: Take these events into perspective. Look beyond talking points. I have a good quote from Bill Moyers:
“News is what the powerful want to keep hidden. Everything else is propaganda.”
    Now, go think.

  207. dbadass says:

And Christian intolerance, Jewish intolerance, etc… It’s a worldwide phenomenon, all right. And it’s not isolated to Islam either.

  212. Virtual Pebble says:

Oh, heck yes. Let’s profile. The Republipimps are really good at profiling. They can spot a crook or a terrorist in the middle of a Times Square crowd from a klick or two away. They’re so good at it that they nominated a couple of them for President and Sith Lord in 2000 and 2004.

  215. linzloo08 says:

And sadly, this talking point was parroted to me by my loving dad, who also used this as yet another excuse to rant and rave about how “evil” liberals are “ruining our country” ( don’t even get him started on the economy unless you want to listen to a crazy person ranting and raving about the “wonderful” free market and how the “evil” administration is going to get rid of the free market system and replace it with the dreaded “socialism”). He also echoed LIEberman’s argument that we need to invade Yemen now, because it was Yemen that “allowed” the underwear bomber to live there and we need to attack Mecca in order to “teach the terrorists a lesson”, even though the terrorists could use said attack as a major rallying point. Yea, you can imagine what fun it is to have him visit for Christmas sometimes…

  216. linzloo08 says:

Oh yeah BTW, he also blames this attempted attack on Obama, saying that it’s Obama’s fault that we allowed Abdulmullatab to fly into the U.S. and that Obama being “soft on terrorists” (i.e., Obama isn’t bombing the heck out of their home countries like Bushieboy did).

  217. Evil Spaniard says:
