Fox News guest: ‘If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched.’

As ThinkProgress has documented, the right-wing has responded to the failed Christmas day terrorist attack by calling for increased racial profiling of Muslims. On Fox News yesterday, retired Lt. General Tom McInerney declared that the United States needs to “be very serious and harsh about the profiling.” “If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched,” said McInerney. “And if we don’t do that, there’s a very high probability we’re going to lose an airliner.” Watch it:

Host Julie Banderas pushed back against McInerney, saying that racial profiling is “extremely controversial” and would likely “generate more violence and hatred towards the West.” McInerney then claimed that what he was calling for was “not racial profiling.” “I do not want to racial profile,” said McInerney. “I want to profile on that group that we have enough evidence from 9/11 and other cases, Moussaoui, etcetera, that we know what we’re looking at.”

Here’s a better idea, if you are a Fox News guest, staff or fan, you should be beaten and water-boarded.

In light of the American war on terror Muslims have been targeted amongst uninformed and prejudiced persons based on misinformation or rather fear mongering. The total number of US deaths from Muslim attacks on US soil totals 3,308 dating back to 1972. (this includes those that perished in the 2001 attacks) Based on this number an American has a 0.001% chance of being the target of an “Extremist Islamic” attack. If we remove the trade center attacks, that % drops to 0.00018%. This doesn’t take into account that the data is spread over 38 years. Is this really a national threat?

  5. wiley says:

Is anyone asking why Al Queda is having this war on airliners? Clearly, we should not be operating under the assumption that terrorism is only a threat to people on airplanes.

  6. Ape-Man says:

This man isn’t taking into account the true odds. Even among young religious males, the percentage of Martyrs that commit suicide are so small that it remains close to zero.

“If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched,”

And then, when al Qeada starts using 16-year-olds or 30-year-olds, we’ll have to expand our strip-searching a bit. Then, when they start using women… that could get a little dicey, but hey, it’s for safety, right? Then when they start using people who aren’t immediately identifiable as Muslims…

you see where this is going…

Brit Hume had some advice for Tiger Woods during this week’s “Fox News Sunday.” Woods will recover as a golfer, Hume says, but it remains to be seen whether he will recover as a person.
“He’s said to be a Buddhist,” Hume said. “I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. … Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery.”

    Don’t forget, kids;

In April 2008 documents obtained by New York Times reporter David Barstow revealed that McInerney had been recruited as one of over 75 retired military officers involved in the Pentagon military analyst program. Participants appeared on television and radio news shows as military analysts, and/or penned newspaper op/ed columns. The program was launched in early 2002 by then-Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Victoria Clarke. The idea was to recruit “key influentials” to help sell a wary public on “a possible Iraq invasion.

    (Wikipedia)

Not only was he a propagandist for the illegal and unjustified Iraq war, he has vested interests in promoting ‘new’ counter-terrorism schemes (which are much like the old ones which clearly aren’t productive).

Shall we brand all Muslims with a big “M” on their forehead when we’re done with the strip search?

  32. EnnuiDivine says:

al-Qaeda and similar groups have been fighting “the infidels” for decades. The failed plot two weeks back shows they’re still pretty creative with their schemes.

My question to the piece of shite, proto-fascist masquerading as a “military expert”:

What is to keep an operative from flying under a false name, with a false passport? Are you going to stop a fanatic from Yemen if he’s traveling as a missionary from Panama? Or maybe even a businessman from Sicily?

  33. Marie says:

What will repugs want to do when terror attacks occur in other venues instead of airplanes? By a clean-shaven, American-speaking white guy. Or a woman. Or wheelchair patient.

  35. 5th Estate says:

    katy and Ape-Man….

For all the various ‘disappointments’ of Obamas administration and the pathetic performance by the Democratic leadership in Congress, IMHO it is absolutely vital that Democrats vote in the same numbers in 2010 as they did in 2008.

The mid-term isn;t less important than the General, it is more important. Votes need to be cast for Progressive challengers to the Blue Dogs, not to teach them a ‘lesson’, but to WIN the elections and change the old corrupt guard.
The now extremely irrational GOP have been enabled in their reactionary obstructionism by the conservative Dems. Nothing will improve unless the Dems are improved.

  36. Marie says:

Frankly, if we were to strip-search for potential terrorists, I think we might want to start with that group in New Mexico. We have more to fear from a crowd of armed teabaggers and gun nuts running amok.
I don’t know anyone who advocates that, but those people are potentially dangerous. Mob rule. Mayhem. Riots by the anarchists.

  37. missmolly says:

Lt. General Tom McInerney is technically correct when he says that what he suggests isn’t racial profiling. If he wants to profile young Muslim males, he’s profiling on the basis of age, religion, and sex. But not race.

I’m assuming that he doesn’t have a problem with males. Even young males. He just has a problem with young males are Muslim.

But I’m a bit puzzled. There are black Muslims, white Muslims, yellow Muslims, and brown Muslims. And Muslims that are mixtures of some or all of the above.

HOW IS HE GOING TO TELL WHO’S A MUSLIM AND WHO ISN’T?

  38. wiley says:

How long before the rest of the world starts putting economic sanctions on the U.S. for our continued violations of human rights and international war crimes?

Fundamentalism #2: If shit happens to a televangelist, it’s okay.
Fundamentalism #3: Shit must be born again.

  44. missmolly says:

Lt. General Tom McInerney must wet the bed a lot. He thinks that every Muslim male between the ages of 18 to 28 years old wants to commit an act of terrorism aboard an airplane. He must live in a constant state of fear.

He says “if we don’t do that [strip search all young Muslim males], there’s a very high probability we’re going to lose an airliner.”

A “very high probability”? There are about 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. Let’s say about half of them are male — about 750 million. And probably about a fifth or a sixth of those fall into the age group he describes — somewhere between 100 million to 150 million.

That’s a lot of people. For there to be a “very high probability” that an airliner would be lost if one of them should get on board without a thorough body cavity search, McInerney is suggesting that a “very high” percentage of this group of people are terrorists (or at least fit the somewhat cartoonish stereotype he has in his mind of a young Muslim male).

Does he want to rethink the absurdity of his statement? Nah, of course not. This is Fox News, after all, and they don’t usually have thinking people as guests on any of their shows.

Yes, terrorism is a problem, and we must do what we can to keep weapons capable of bringing down an airplane off the airplanes. But profiling isn’t the answer. No matter who you profile, Al Qaeda will just find somebody who doesn’t fit the profile to do the deed.

During the 90’s, at the time of the horrific war within the former Yugoslavia, the Serbs, being of the same ethnic background as the Bosnians, used circumcision as the barometer to screen out Muslim Bosnians from Serbs, just before taking the poor Muslim Bosnian men off to slaughter.

Profiling Muslim men at airports is another example of religious bigotry as currently practiced by the holy roller white-wing in this country.

I am not a Muslim, nor do I defend jihadists.

The vast majority of Muslims in this nation have come here by choice or have even been born here.

Millions and millions of tourists from all over the world visit Moslem and Arab countries for pleasure, touring historical sites ,doing business, and attending schooling& doing research and visa versa.

Fox is nothing but an anti-Moslem network.

Participants appeared on television and radio news shows as military analysts, and/or penned newspaper op/ed columns. The program was launched in early 2002 by then-Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Victoria Clarke. The idea was to recruit “key influentials” to help sell a wary public on “a possible Iraq invasion.”

ScuzzyFlippers has once again (amazingly!) missed the point. From the Times:

Citizens of Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria, countries considered “state sponsors of terrorism,” and those of “countries of interest” — including Afghanistan, Algeria, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Somalia and Yemen — will face the special scrutiny, officials said.

Passengers holding passports from those nations, or taking flights that originated or passed through any of them, will be required to undergo full-body pat downs and will face extra scrutiny of their carry-on bags before they can board planes to the United States.

Where he gets the “profiling” is a mystery.

Fine ‘Bruth, so why not increase security for travelers from ALL counties?

Probably because that would make air travel into and out of the U.S. next to impossible.

As it is, we’re standing to lose billions of dollars in the next few decades as various international conventions and other events skip the U.S. because of its difficult travel restrictions. Conservatives hate the economy.

    .

    Fuzzy Slippers™ A Solid B+ says:

What PREDOMINATE RELIGION do Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria have in common?

Hey, if they were also majority left-handed in all of those countries I wouldn’t be hopping up and down screaming about that.

The simple fact of the matter is, those nations have higher incidences of sponsored terrorism, and therefore people traveling from them will receive more scrutiny. That’s the beginning and end of it.

The quote at the top of the page said that individual passengers should be strip-searched based solely on their religion. You’re complaining about something completely different.

Of course this only goes back to your own ignorance. Most of these countries have a wide variety of religions represented in them. And there are many majority-Muslim countries that aren’t on that list. But you wouldn’t know about any of that, nor are you interested in finding out. Which is why we find the fact that you seem to think your opinion should be given any weight at all, to be a rather quaint notion.

46 of them. If travelers were being targeted for their religion, pinhead, why aren’t all 46 on the list? Four of the countries are considered “sponsors of terrorism” and have been on that particular list for years, if not decades. That leaves ten which are “of interest”. Imagine the outrage on Fox if another country (say Iraq, in response to the Blackwater case dismissal) said they were going to start strip searching white Christian men to help them with their internal security.

    Ladies and gentlemen -

We now have our first illustration of just how far around the twist someone has to be for a Fox “New” host to put up some half-assed attempt at reigning them in.

    bob h says:

Or do they mean anyone with a slightly dark skin hue?

    That’s what they always mean.

Another graduate from Clown College gets work on FuxNews!
To say “if we don’t do that (strip search young Muslim men), there’s a very high probability we’re going to lose an airliner.”

I think that there would be a very high probability that young Muslim men would embrace Christianism when asked their religion.

  186. TerrytheTurtle says:

I think I called the ‘exploding underpants’ bomb method back in 2005 – maybe someone overheard me (”Cracking idea that Abdul, let’s try that”).

Next up: the explosives go up your bum and you drink the detanator about 6-8 hours before you get on the plane.

When they start giving no-choice enema’s at the TSA lines, I’ll be back on Amtrak.

  187. glogrrl says:

About the time we start profiling, that’s when they will find some Ayarian a-hole who will do their dirty work for them and we’ll be blown up anyway. Get a clue, people. If we pull out of the Islamic countries, stop bombing the shite out of them, and mind our own business, maybe they’ll stop trying to blow us up.

    Fuzzy?
What happens when the terrorist begin recruiting Blonde haired, blue eyed Scandinavians?

  189. tantrictim says:

if you are an old white ex army type, you should be automatically audited by the IRS for your shady connections to the military-industrial-mercenary complex, which faux news and other media outlets never disclose, nbc’s ret. gen. barry mccaffery is a great example of same…fyi the israelis practice profiling based on behaviour, not nationality, which is why no plane that has left ben gurion airport has ever been blown up, and neither has an el-al jet for that matter!

  190. republicanSScareme says:

Later, General Tom McInerney admitted that he enjoys being strip searched and given a rectal exam. “The way to my soul is through my butt,” he said.

  191. linzloo08 says:

What a suprise…NOT!!This is kind of like what my dear dad(dy) was talking about, whenever he wasn’t talking about sending a missile to Mecca or some other Holy City over there to “teach the terrorists a lesson”, nevermind that:
a). it’s counterproductive ( terrorist networks will adapt to this)
b). It’s a clear violation of civil liberties, therefore it’s a direct violation of the Constitution ( but they don’t seem to like it too much anyways)

  192. Loonie says:

Hey, I know! Why don’t we have them wear a yellow star for good measure?

“If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched”
