As ThinkProgress has documented, the right-wing has responded to the failed Christmas day terrorist attack by calling for increased racial profiling of Muslims. On Fox News yesterday, retired Lt. General Tom McInerney declared that the United States needs to “be very serious and harsh about the profiling.” “If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched,” said McInerney. “And if we don’t do that, there’s a very high probability we’re going to lose an airliner.” Watch it:
Host Julie Banderas pushed back against McInerney, saying that racial profiling is “extremely controversial” and would likely “generate more violence and hatred towards the West.” McInerney then claimed that what he was calling for was “not racial profiling.” “I do not want to racial profile,” said McInerney. “I want to profile on that group that we have enough evidence from 9/11 and other cases, Moussaoui, etcetera, that we know what we’re looking at.”
“Fox News guest: ‘If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched.’”
Here’s a better idea, if you are a Fox News guest, staff or fan, you should be beaten and water-boarded.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:05 pm“If you are an 18 to 50-year-old white Republican male then you should be strip searched.” Fixed.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:06 pmThey hate us because of our freedom.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:10 pmIn light of the American war on terror Muslims have been targeted amongst uninformed and prejudiced persons based on misinformation or rather fear mongering. The total number of US deaths from Muslim attacks on US soil totals 3,308 dating back to 1972. (this includes those that perished in the 2001 attacks) Based on this number an American has a 0.001% chance of being the target of an “Extremist Islamic” attack. If we remove the trade center attacks, that % drops to 0.00018%. This doesn’t take into account that the data is spread over 38 years. Is this really a national threat?
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:17 pmIs anyone asking why Al Queda is having this war on airliners? Clearly, we should not be operating under the assumption that terrorism is only a threat to people on airplanes.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:18 pmThis man isn’t taking into account the true odds. Even among young religious males, the percentage of Martyrs that commit suicide are so small that it remains close to zero.
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:25 pmSo, how the hell do they pick out the Muslims ?

January 3rd, 2010 at 6:34 pmIs there any Repub/GOP/tea-bagger/Fox pundit who remembers Timothy McVeigh?? A home-grown white terrorist who killed so many Americans, including children in a daycare? So I suppose they would also agree to strip search any white, Christian, short-haired American male??

January 3rd, 2010 at 6:41 pmThe FOX news guest is 100% wrong. Once we start removing our freedoms (religion/speech) we lose who we are. They had a right to say it though even if it is 100% wrong.

January 3rd, 2010 at 6:53 pm“If you are an 18 to 28-year-old Muslim man then you should be strip searched,”
And then, when al Qeada starts using 16-year-olds or 30-year-olds, we’ll have to expand our strip-searching a bit. Then, when they start using women… that could get a little dicey, but hey, it’s for safety, right? Then when they start using people who aren’t immediately identifiable as Muslims…
you see where this is going…
January 3rd, 2010 at 6:55 pmNo wonder we’ve been losing for 8 years with this nut General’s idea. Now he forgets woman are used and even older people. It’s clear that the thinkers for the pass 8 years have been living in the pass ideas. This is 2010 not 1910. Bush decided to go it alone and lost big, Obama has joined in a team effort and that’s a winning formate.

January 3rd, 2010 at 7:08 pmOT — But also from Fox TV
Brit Hume had some advice for Tiger Woods during this week’s “Fox News Sunday.” Woods will recover as a golfer, Hume says, but it remains to be seen whether he will recover as a person.
“He’s said to be a Buddhist,” Hume said. “I don’t think that faith offers the kind of forgiveness and redemption that is offered by the Christian faith. … Tiger, turn to the Christian faith and you can make a total recovery.”
Talk about arrogance, presumption and chutzpah.

I think they are all repressed puritans still looking for witches to burn.
Shall we brand all Muslims with a big “M” on their forehead when we’re done with the strip search?
al-Qaeda and similar groups have been fighting “the infidels” for decades. The failed plot two weeks back shows they’re still pretty creative with their schemes.
My question to the piece of shite, proto-fascist masquerading as a “military expert”:
What is to keep an operative from flying under a false name, with a false passport? Are you going to stop a fanatic from Yemen if he’s traveling as a missionary from Panama? Or maybe even a businessman from Sicily?
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:20 pmWhat will repugs want to do when terror attacks occur in other venues instead of airplanes? By a clean-shaven, American-speaking white guy. Or a woman. Or wheelchair patient.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:21 pmThey are strong advocates for “big brother” watching everyone because they are cowards who don’t believe in American democracy.
If McInerney wants to see young Muslim men strip-searched, there’s probably some website he can visit in his free time. Seriously, they have porn for EVERYTHING.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:23 pmkaty and Ape-Man….
For all the various ‘disappointments’ of Obamas administration and the pathetic performance by the Democratic leadership in Congress, IMHO it is absolutely vital that Democrats vote in the same numbers in 2010 as they did in 2008.
The mid-term isn;t less important than the General, it is more important. Votes need to be cast for Progressive challengers to the Blue Dogs, not to teach them a ‘lesson’, but to WIN the elections and change the old corrupt guard.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:28 pmThe now extremely irrational GOP have been enabled in their reactionary obstructionism by the conservative Dems. Nothing will improve unless the Dems are improved.
Frankly, if we were to strip-search for potential terrorists, I think we might want to start with that group in New Mexico. We have more to fear from a crowd of armed teabaggers and gun nuts running amok.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:30 pmI don’t know anyone who advocates that, but those people are potentially dangerous. Mob rule. Mayhem. Riots by the anarchists.
Lt. General Tom McInerney is technically correct when he says that what he suggests isn’t racial profiling. If he wants to profile young Muslim males, he’s profiling on the basis of age, religion, and sex. But not race.
I’m assuming that he doesn’t have a problem with males. Even young males. He just has a problem with young males are Muslim.
But I’m a bit puzzled. There are black Muslims, white Muslims, yellow Muslims, and brown Muslims. And Muslims that are mixtures of some or all of the above.
HOW IS HE GOING TO TELL WHO’S A MUSLIM AND WHO ISN’T?
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:31 pmDamned straight! I don’t know how the American memory can be so short, even as we suffer the effects of those eight years but for crying out loud—VOTE for more liberal democrats.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:32 pmAre Muslim men going to have to wear yellow crescents on their outer clothing now?
Will we all be required to state our religious affiliation in order to be able to travel?
How long before the Reich-wing calls for internment camps for Muslims – until the War on Terror is over?
How long before the rest of the world starts putting economic sanctions on the U.S. for our continued violations of human rights and international war crimes?
What will evangelical christians do when we get to 01/01/13 and Armageddon +/or the Rapture didn’t happen? Blame it on Obama?

Hinduism: This shit has happened before.
Islam: If shit happens, it is the will of Allah.
Catholicism: If shit happens, you deserve it.
Protestantism: Let shit happen to someone else.
Fundamentalism: If shit happens, you will go to hell, unless you are born again. (Amen!)
Fundamentalism #2: If shit happens to a televangelist, it’s okay.
Fundamentalism #3: Shit must be born again.
Lt. General Tom McInerney must wet the bed a lot. He thinks that every Muslim male between the ages of 18 to 28 years old wants to commit an act of terrorism aboard an airplane. He must live in a constant state of fear.
He says “if we don’t do that [strip search all young Muslim males], there’s a very high probability we’re going to lose an airliner.”
A “very high probability”? There are about 1.5 billion Muslims in the world. Let’s say about half of them are male — about 750 million. And probably about a fifth or a sixth of those fall into the age group he describes — somewhere between 100 million to 150 million.
That’s a lot of people. For there to be a “very high probability” that an airliner would be lost if one of them should get on board without a thorough body cavity search, McInerney is suggesting that a “very high” percentage of this group of people are terrorists (or at least fit the somewhat cartoonish stereotype he has in his mind of a young Muslim male).
Does he want to rethink the absurdity of his statement? Nah, of course not. This is Fox News, after all, and they don’t usually have thinking people as guests on any of their shows.
Yes, terrorism is a problem, and we must do what we can to keep weapons capable of bringing down an airplane off the airplanes. But profiling isn’t the answer. No matter who you profile, Al Qaeda will just find somebody who doesn’t fit the profile to do the deed.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:49 pmHooda, I think that little quick key there would be very handy on a laminated card that we could fit in our wallets.
have you something in that form?
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:50 pmSo CNN is monitoring the air ports for ‘trouble’ now. A man went through an airport without being thoroughly “checked”. OMG! He MUST BE RE-SCREENED or CNN will stay on this story for our safety.
Didn’t CNN know it was “when” and not “if” there is another suicide bomber in America? Is CNN partly Republican or something – could al qqada be working on CNN almost as well as it is working on Republicans?
Don’t touch that dial or go outside until that man in SCREENED – CNN will keep us posted.
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:51 pmHow about if cowardly wingnuts just don’t use air travel any more, since they’re so scared?
January 3rd, 2010 at 7:52 pmOff-topic, but interesting:
Rick Warren’s groupies coughed up over 2 million dollars for Rick’s belated Christmas bonus, all for being such a goddamned good preacher of the Good News.

January 3rd, 2010 at 8:00 pmMiss Molly, Muslim men are circumcised.
It is part of their religious law.
There has been a bit of a dust-up here in the U.S., with certain men who have converted to Islam still refusing to be circumcised.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:02 pmYou could make a church franchise work on greed alone, but a twisted moral compass makes it so much easier. the corrupt ones always get the biggest take. They’re ‘adaptable’.

January 3rd, 2010 at 8:05 pm“In April 2008 documents obtained by New York Times reporter David Barstow revealed that McInerney had been recruited as one of over 75 retired military officers involved in the Pentagon military analyst program.”
For those who don’t remember, this was the psych-op program used to hype the American public into war. It was illegal, naked use of progpaganda against the American public by the Bush Whitehouse and the MSM, including Chris Matthews and MSNBC, and this nut was a willing and well paid participant.
I’m glad many of those I know can barely afford a bus fare!
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:05 pmmissmolly @ 44,
I got thinking and ethnic profiling and strip searching are from the gut, feel good solutions. The process of a practial logical analysis is beyond their capabilities. You can hype it up for general consumption, but effectivness requires a different approch. The country has to return to a results driven dialog, let the hype for the teagaggers!
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:07 pmDuring the 90’s, at the time of the horrific war within the former Yugoslavia, the Serbs, being of the same ethnic background as the Bosnians, used circumcision as the barometer to screen out Muslim Bosnians from Serbs, just before taking the poor Muslim Bosnian men off to slaughter.
Profiling Muslim men at airports is another example of religious bigotry as currently practiced by the holy roller white-wing in this country.
I am not a Muslim, nor do I defend jihadists.
The vast majority of Muslims in this nation have come here by choice or have even been born here.
They are our fellow citizens, and should be treated with the same deference and respect that any citizen in this nation should expect.
Bring on the full body scanners at airports, and make the holy rollers get the f**k over there genitalia obsession.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:09 pmNo doubt Tom McInept is a real pussy for a lt general.
As a republican, I think Tom McInept is doing his nation a great service by cashing in with defense contractors and saying inept sh*t on air.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:09 pm55 Wow. that so so pertinent. This is the biggest danger we face. they have money, influence, TV networks, Radio networks, and they will apparently do absolutely anything to deceive us and remain deluded as a result! MSM is in deep trouble in my books baby!
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:10 pmA sizable number of male combat veterans commit horrific acts of rape and murder upon return to the U.S.
Gen. McInerney should be strip-searched each time he flies or enters a public building.
God only knows what he might do, given his combat training and his sense of fury.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:13 pmMcInteney’s probability of losing an aeroplane if 18-28 young Moslem is on the plane is an absurd observation..because millions of Moslem travellers fly every year who fall in this category all over the globe, meaning that there will hundreds of aeroplanes falling from skies every year.
Millions and millions of tourists from all over the world visit Moslem and Arab countries for pleasure, touring historical sites ,doing business, and attending schooling& doing research and visa versa.
Fox is nothing but an anti-Moslem network.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:14 pmThey bring guests on their network whom the network knows in advance what’s in their minds, and what hatred they are going to spew against Moslems and Arabs, and if they are anti-Moslems they keep coming to the station, otherwise they will be shut off if they defend Moslems and Arabs.
55 Wow. that so so pertinent
The point is are you willing to believe someone who knew he was involved in a propaganda effort. Does he speak truth?
The MSM is very powerful, indeed, my man!
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:14 pmGiven our own nation’s penchant for unprovoked invasions and general approval of the gun culture, should we be surprised if many European and Asian nations start strip-searching American tourists?

I must say, however, that the old pervs in the repiggie ranks would love, would simply die to implement full body scans, strip searches and full body cavity examinations on college girls taking their spring break flights.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:20 pmevangenital says Some of us need to go into the religion business.
I once had a b-in-law who did just that. He sent $50 for a certificate pronouncing him a preacher. He started a little church in his living room for local “lost souls” and he bled them for money until he had enough to take his children (whom he had abandoned years before) to a week-long stay in California’s Disneyland.
I don’t see much different in televangelists, or ministers like my b-in-law and Warren, and his ilk — I won’t list them all — it would take up too much time. There are so many because there is MONEY to be made in the business!!

Retired Lt. General Tom McInerney walks and talks like FOX News military analyst Colonel David Hunt, the author of the book, “They Just Don’t Get It: How Washington is Still Compromising Your Safety and What We Can Do About It.” The same cat who told O’Reilly that they’d find WMDs in Iraq within a month after the invasion. FOX has a serious problem with their retired military analysts, don’t they?

Little Tommy McInerny has a great idea! Smear bacon grease on them and, if they catch fire, they’re a Muslim.

January 3rd, 2010 at 8:29 pmLiz Morrison says:
66, You have a problem with women, don’t you?
I do, and 18- to 28-yo women should be included on the priority profile Full Body Scan (Full B.S., for short) list. The list will grow to 100,000 like the no-fly lists.
January 3rd, 2010 at 8:29 pmYou’re right, evangenital, it is a racket.

Interesting thought! Could be a distraction from something bigger in the future as we aim all of our attention and efforts on the airliners and airport security, kind a how we focused all of our efforts and attention on Iraq.
Who knows, maybe that evil phuck, Darth Cheney will get so angry at the Black president, that he will stick a pipe bomb in his ass and storm the White House, only to fall short and dead from a heart attack.

I’m a bit puzzled by this moronic statement.
1-We’ve already lost the United States of America to Wall Street, the bankers, multi-national corporations, the war industry, the oil/energy industry, etc, etc, etc…
2-Are you one of the pea brains who actually believe Islamic terrorists are going to take over the Western world???? Do you actually believe that Wall Street, the bankers, the multi-national corporations, the war industry, the oil/energy industry would really allow for this to happen?
Wow you are pretty stupid!

The former administration has done more harm to this country than any Islamic terrorist could ever dream of doing.

January 3rd, 2010 at 9:59 pmWhile we’re busy checking the Muslim young men, maybe we should also check these:
- If you’re a republican, you should have your phone checked for sexy text messages to anyone other than your spouse. Hypocritical repubs get tossed out on the tarmac.
- If you’re a democrat, have your campaign promises compared to your actual results. Liars get trampled by the airport trams.
- If you even look Mexican, you should have your passport checked – oh wait, illegal Mexicans don’t cross where border guards are. Nevermind.
- If you’re black – well, you must’ve done something wrong.

Perhaps I should have said “bigotry against minority ethnicity and religions,” since you seem to be a little confused about the fact that you are indeed marching arm in arm with centuries of Klansmen and Nazis. You don’t get to try to wriggle out of it just because you want to dehumanize and subjugate a different group than the one that some other guy wants to dehumanize and subjugate.

ElBruce, apparently Fuzzy begs to differ. Apparently, he thinks that the country this is the country from which you travel is either your race or your religion. Maybe both — it’s tough to tell.
I think he’s wrong about that, but he seems willing to argue the point.
So which is it, Fuzzy? is the country from which you travel your race? Or is it your religion?

January 3rd, 2010 at 11:35 pmMaybe we should do away with don’t ask don’t tell and just kick anyone we suspect is gay out of the military before they become a former Lt General who wants to strip search male teens at the airport.
It’s also interesting to note that in in April 2008 documents obtained by New York Times reporter David Barstow revealed that McInerney had been recruited as one of over 75 retired military officers involved in the Pentagon military analyst program. Participants appeared on television and radio news shows as military analysts, and/or penned newspaper op/ed columns. The program was launched in early 2002 by then-Assistant Secretary of Defense for Public Affairs Victoria Clarke. The idea was to recruit “key influentials” to help sell a wary public on “a possible Iraq invasion.”
In other words I find myself suspecting McInerney is gay and knowing he’s a whore of the worst sort.

Apparently, this is how you deal with your inherent racism — excuse it if certain parties are excluded.

Get someone to read the article to you, Scuzzy. It’s spelled out very clearly. You think Cuba is a Muslim nation? Do you know how many predominantly-Muslim countries are not on the list?
January 4th, 2010 at 12:23 amFuzzy Slippers™ A Solid B+ says:
Fine ‘Bruth, so why not increase security for travelers from ALL counties?
Probably because that would make air travel into and out of the U.S. next to impossible.
As it is, we’re standing to lose billions of dollars in the next few decades as various international conventions and other events skip the U.S. because of its difficult travel restrictions. Conservatives hate the economy.
.
Fuzzy Slippers™ A Solid B+ says:
What PREDOMINATE RELIGION do Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Nigeria have in common?
Hey, if they were also majority left-handed in all of those countries I wouldn’t be hopping up and down screaming about that.
The simple fact of the matter is, those nations have higher incidences of sponsored terrorism, and therefore people traveling from them will receive more scrutiny. That’s the beginning and end of it.
The quote at the top of the page said that individual passengers should be strip-searched based solely on their religion. You’re complaining about something completely different.
Of course this only goes back to your own ignorance. Most of these countries have a wide variety of religions represented in them. And there are many majority-Muslim countries that aren’t on that list. But you wouldn’t know about any of that, nor are you interested in finding out. Which is why we find the fact that you seem to think your opinion should be given any weight at all, to be a rather quaint notion.

And who might be expected to make up the bulk of the travelers from those countries, you MORON.
Here’s a hint for you, dipshit. Muslim countries of the world.
46 of them. If travelers were being targeted for their religion, pinhead, why aren’t all 46 on the list? Four of the countries are considered “sponsors of terrorism” and have been on that particular list for years, if not decades. That leaves ten which are “of interest”. I don’t suppose their records of involvement in attacks on Americans would be a factor, right?

Nobody’s tap dancing. The point of origin for a flight is not the same thing as selecting an individual based on their religion. Religion =/= country.
Selecting people based on their religion would simply be dumb. All a terrorist cell would have to do is find the palest guy in their group, dye his hair blonde and have him walking around the concourse saying “golly gee whillikers, I can’t wait to go play some golf.” And all of you stupid bigots would give that guy a free pass through security.

January 4th, 2010 at 3:24 amFuzzy Slippers™ A Solid B+ babbles:
You too gummitch? To quote your quote…
If you cared to read the next paragraph, you would have run into this:
Passengers holding passports from those nations, or taking flights that originated or passed through any of them, will be required to undergo full-body pat downs and will face extra scrutiny of their carry-on bags before they can board planes to the United States.
Did you catch that, or was it too subtle for you? Once again:
or taking flights that originated or passed through any of them
Did you see that? That would be anybody passing through those countries. Yes, including Scandinavians. By the way, even as I know someone else pointed this out to you, Persians are light-skinned and blue-eyed, some Syrians are too, as are Kosovans and Turks -none of which are ethnic Arabs. There are sizable Muslim populations in Albania, Serbia, and Russia.
Seriously, what does a Muslim look like in your pin-sized head?
And all this is only tangentially related to McInerney’s request to strip search all Muslims between the ages of 18 and 28. Duh.
January 4th, 2010 at 3:51 amIf there’s a repressive, ineffective way to deal with a problem, the Right will go for it every time. If it involves targeting a minority group, they will have orgasms over it.
