Republicans dismayed by Obama’s strong performance, say it was a ‘mistake’ to let cameras roll.

House Republicans were fired up and ready to go for their conversation with President Obama at their annual retreat today. According to the New York Times, members of the conservative Republican House Conference said they were “itching to quiz the president and present their policy ideas rather than listen to another lofty presidential address.” Although such sessions generally occur behind closed doors, Republicans agreed to open it up after the White House said it was willing to do so. However, after Obama’s strong performance, some Republicans are now regretting that decision. As Luke Russert reported on MSNBC:

RUSSERT: Tom Cole — former head of the NRCC, congressman from Oklahoma — said, “He scored many points. He did really well.” Barack Obama, for an hour and a half, was able to refute every single Republican talking point used against him on the major issues of the day. In essence, it was almost like a debate where he was front and center for the majority of it. … One Republican said to me, off the record, behind closed doors: “It was a mistake that we allowed the cameras to roll like that. We should not have done that.”

Watch it:

“Accepting the invitation to speak at the House GOP retreat may turn out to be the smartest decision the White House has made in months,” writes the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder. “Debating a law professor is kind of foolish — the Republican House Caucus has managed to turn Obama’s weakness — his penchant for nuance — into a strength. Plenty of Republicans asked good and probing questions, but Mike Pence, among others, found their arguments simply demolished by the president.”

Update Ezra Klein sarcastically writes, “Apparently, transparency sounds better in press releases than it does in practice.”

  5. ElBruce, owned and operated by NewsCorp, Inc. says:

    Yeah, let’s do this monthly.

Having him take questions like that from the minority party (and I look forward to him being questioned by the Democratic caucus as well) reminds me of how the British Parliament does it. However, this is a level of transparency that seems completely unheard of in American history. I can’t think of a historical instance where the President was so engaged with Congress on a regular basis.

Even if it doesn’t become a monthly thing, at least the idea of following up the SOTU address (which is supposed to accomplish the same thing) with caucus Q&A sessions seems like an extremely appropriate idea.

And the fact that he totally smacked them down doesn’t hurt.

  9. mary lacewing says:

Several Republicans challenged Obama with lengthy complaints and sharp questions.

“What should we tell our constituents who know that Republicans have offered positive solutions” for health care, “and yet continue to hear out of the administration that we’ve offered nothing?” asked Rep. Tom Price, R-Ga.

Obama showed little sympathy, disputing Price’s claim that a Republican plan would cover nearly all Americans without raising taxes.

“That’s just not true,” said Obama. He called such claims “boilerplate” meant to score political points.

msnbc.com’s headline makes it look less devastating than it really was. But, when you read the story, it makes Obama look very, very good.

Hell yes it was a mistake for them. Because they got the public smackdown of all public smackdowns. They didn’t just let it air, it aired on every news channel (including Fox). Apparently wingnuts are so captivated by the fact that he gives good speech, they completely never noticed how good he is as an interview subject as well. This is what they get for only paying attention to the memes that support their delusions, rather than the rest of the publicly available information out there.

IMHO, it pervades almost everything they say and every move they have made since January 20, 2009.

Still claiming he’s “unqualified” at this stage, as well as the “teleprompter” thing, really exposes what they’re actually thinking. Can you imagine a white guy who was as eloquent and quick-witted as Obama, who displayed as much deep thinking on issues as he does, being treated like this? Hell no. They might attack him on other fronts, but they’d definitely respect his acumen if he was white. They’re still thinking there has to be some kind of gimmick or trick for how we can get a black guy to appear smart. They are simply incapable of admitting that he’s actually that smart. They refuse to believe it.

Even more extreme is the pervasive wingnut notion that he’s secretly out to “get whitey.” Like he’s just a smiley-face tacked on to some sort of 1970’s-style Black Panther / Symbionese Liberation Army / Communist revolutionary front. The only way you could even entertain that notion is if you’re seriously concerned that all, most, or even a significant amount of people of color in this nation secretly want to rise up and kill all the white folks in their beds, or force them into slave labor in the plantations of the future. And that notion – that there’s an inevitable race war – underlies the most virulent forms of political racism as embodied in groups like the KKK and various neo-Nazis organizations.

So every time somebody says “Obama’s secretly trying to take everything over,” or “Obama may say this but he really wants to do that,” they’re pretty much giving cover to white supremacist ideology, whether they know it or not. My suspicion is that they know it and are fine with that.

Clearly they did not seeing this backfiring the way it did. Remember, he was shown shaking hands with everyone in that room, after it was done (even tho it was on CSPAN)! Now, those Republicans can be seen laughing and shaking hands with the pres, which can backfire on them come election time, with their tea-bagger base.

I think they should air the Dems caucus event as well. It’ll be an even harder slamming of the Republicans than this event was! He used very strong language against the Republicans straight to their face, and all FOX can say is he is “lecturing” too much! All of our great presidents have been great lecturers, so what FOX is saying, ultimately, is Obama is a “great president”! Idiots.

I like the idea of Barack-O getting out there more. Seems he laid low his first year, probably to see how bad things can really get (and did they!). He bit his tongue, and now its time to lash out, right to their face! I think this is only the beginning. I see Obama getting a lot more involved, especially in critiquing Republicans who have been trying to call him out (on slanders) the last year or so.

Hopefully, he is able to get some things done, like Healthcare, global warming policies, etc, easing the gridlock in congress. I recognize they won’t get everything done, and things will likely be scaled back. Better to get some things done, that can potentially help millions of people, than not get anything done at all.
