Conservatives Fearmonger About Repealing DADT: It Will Lead To The Draft And ‘Mortally’ Wound The Military

After President Obama declared in his State of the Union address last week that he would “work with Congress and our military to finally repeal” the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy “this year,” conservatives predictably balked at the idea. “With all due respect to his sincerely held if abstractly formed views on this subject, it would be reckless to require the military to carry out a major sociological change, one contrary to the preferences of a large majority of its members, as it fights two wars,” wrote the Weekly Standard’s Bill Kristol.

With the push for overturning DADT gaining momentum and the support of Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen, conservative fearmongering about the potential effects of repeal have gone into overdrive with suggestions that the policy change would “mortally” damage the all-volunteer military. During a hearing with Mullen and Defense Secretary Robert Gates today, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) warned that allowing “the presence in the armed forces of persons who demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts” would pave the way for allowing “alcohol use, adultery, fraternization, and body art” in the military. On CNN today, Family Research Council President Tony Perkins suggested it could lead to the re-institution of the draft:

PERKINS: Let’s go back to the Military Times in 2008 had a poll of active duty military members. Fifty-eight percent said they were opposed to overturning this policy. And many have said that this will cause them to reconsider whether or not they will stay in the military. And it will have an impact upon recruiting. I mean this is an issue of retention and recruitment for the military and it ultimately could lead back to the imposition of a draft in order to fill the numbers and quotas in the military.

Perkins’ draft claim was echoed in a statement today by Rabbi Yehuda Levin of the Rabbinical Alliance of America, who also suggested that repealing DADT could cause earthquakes and other natural disasters. Watch it:

Dr. Nathaniel Frank responded to Perkins’ “fear tactics” about military retention — a claim that relies on a “unscientific, self-selective” survey by Military Times of its subscribers, not a random sample of active duty soldiers — by pointing out that “polls show in Canada and Britain that when they asked service members if they would, if they wanted to serve with gays, two-thirds of them refused. Absolutely refused. But when they actually lifted the bans anyway, about 2 people, 2 people, not the thousands predicted by the polls actually left.”

Nearly 14,000 gay and lesbian service men and women have been discharged from military service since 1993. Additionally, a 2007 study by the Williams Institute found that DADT hurts retention as “an estimated 4,000 lesbian, gay, and bisexual military personnel” per year since 1994 “would have been retained if they could have been more open about their sexual orientation.”

The teabaggers that are screeching the most are the ones that never served our country. I served with gays in the military and they did their job just as well and as competent as anyone else. No one cared they were gay, and most people knew they were gay including our officers. Teabaggers need to stop acting like they know something about being in the military. They will only continue to look more ignorant…if that’s even possible.

How in the Hell will allowing gays to serve in the military lead to the draft? We have two wars going on and this SOB will scapegoat gays? Why should the right-whiners worry about extending equal rights to all Americans? They generally don’t join the military, so it wouldn’t affect them anyway.

Furthermore, our military already works side by side with the openly gay members from other countries in both Iraq and Afghanistan, so it’s not going to be a big change at all!

Leave it to the right-whiners to push their anti-American anti-gay agenda on everyone.

Well, they are obviously convinced that gays are having a whole lot more fun than they are (at least, the one’s who aren’t being beaten to death and crucified …), otherwise there’d be nothing about TEH HOMO lifestyle that could so pose such a dangerous seduction to our children and livestock.

Yup…the gays are having more fun and good for them! They don’t care about who’s doing what in what orifice and they’re not killing anyone who disagrees with their sexual choices.

The tea-baggers in our neighborhoods are a more dangerous threat to…well everyone! One would kill your kid and attack your goat at the same time. I suggest we force them into exile for the safety of this nation. Give em’ Texas.

“Years” as in, “forever.” Not that my personal experience accounts for much, but I certainly knew of gays in my unit from over 30 years ago.

Speaking personally, I just don’t get the issue and never have. The gays weren’t interested in me (and if they had been, I’d have been more puzzled than anything). As far as I was concerned they were just less competition for the ladies’ attentions. The only people in my unit who ever made my skin crawl were the one’s who would not, and would not even try, to do their friggin’ jobs. Sexual orientation had nothing to do with that.

And I don’t have much respect for the Boy Scouts…a friend of mine was outed shortly after he became an Eagle Scout by his own mother. His own mother blurting out his secret him is cruel enough. He was openly gay in the outside world but he had to hide his sexuality there.

  84. tombaker says:

allowing the homo to serve in the military would be an absolute disaster.

then why isn’t it already a disaster?

gays have been serving since the Revolutionary War, whether you choose to acknowledge it or not.

The real guys were totally doing each other… they thought it improved unit cohesion.

  87. pete says:

Not surprisingly, the stupid troll has a very low opinion of our troops. Frankly, I would feel very unsafe if I thought our fine serving men and women would commit the serious crime of desertion because gay people make them feel icky.

    _______________________________________________________________

Um…I once served in the Navy, and I can tell you that sailors have always consumed alcohol and gotten tattoos. I doubt that has changed much. Adultery will always exist whenever spouses are separated for long periods of time (although I rush to assure anybody geographically separated from his/her spouse due to military deployment that not everyone engages in this). Fraternization is tolerated far less than any of the other conditions Chambliss mentions, but it’s impossible to eradicate that completely, either.

    .
    ElBruce,
    .
I understand Zooey’s point. I’ve thought we needed this for a while now (or at least some sort of mandatory national service). We’ve let a whole generation get by with the notion that they don’t owe the country (or anyone else, for that matter) anything.
    .
People who know that everyone’s children will be put in harm’s way if a decision is made to take military action somewhere will tend to be a lot more cautious with that decision. It would serve as a dampener on such adventures.
    .
Right now, though, a draft might serve to do little more than keep existing conflicts going (until, like Vietnam, too many kids from the “right” sorts of families started coming home in body bags). Then, suddenly, the moral objections to the war start to appear, as if by magic.
    .
As long as it’s not YOUR kids dying, the war is an abstract event or little more than a video game to many. Don’t like what you are seeing – change the channel and it’ll go away.
