Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel had called a group of liberal activists “f—ing retarded” last August for planning to air ads attacking conservative Democrats critical of health care reform. On Monday, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin called for Emanuel to be fired for his “slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities.” Emanuel, who had actually apologized for the remark to Special Olympics CEO Tim Shriver the week before, now plans to host “a delegation of advocates, including two people with mental disabilities, at the White House” as part of his effort to make amends. Claiming Emanuel’s regrettable remarks gave him permission, hate radio talker Rush Limbaugh endorsed the language and said the liberal activists truly are “retards”:
LIMBAUGH: Our political correct society is acting like some giant insult’s taken place by calling a bunch of people who are retards, retards. I mean these people, these liberal activists are kooks. They are looney tunes. And I’m not going to apologize for it, I’m just quoting Emanuel. It’s in the news. I think their big news is he’s out there calling Obama’s number one supporters f’ing retards. It doesn’t say who gets habeas corpus. It just says that it can’t be suspended unless we’re either having some kind of major revolution or civil war, or are in the middle of suffering a mass invasion. In those cases, whoever the sorry bastard was who was President at the time would hopefully be a little too busy rounding up all the bad guys to get around to processing them all through the legal system. But other than that, there are no exceptions.
Centuries of SCOTUS rulings have supported that it applies to foreigners in our custody as well as citizens, most recently in Hamdi v. Rumsfeld. Furthermore, they’ve also logically extended it to say that if habeus corpus must be upheld, which is to say that our court system can demand jurisdiction over the case, that there’s only one set of rules and procedures by which the case will be tried. Therefore, the rest of the “rights” extended to people under trial must be followed.
This isn’t just about granting rights to terrorists because we think they deserve rights or whatever gets your panties all in a twist. First of all, you’d have to first show that they were terrorists in order to say that we’re giving rights to terrorists, and the only legitimate method of doing that is to try them in a court of law. Thus by catch-22 logic, you would have to legally indict them no matter who they are, in order to determine what their legal status is. Remember, from the day Guantanamo Bay was opened as an extra-legal prison, Bush and Cheney swore to all of us that 100% of the people in there were hardened terrorists. Then at least 80% of them have been released as it turned out they were merely innocent bystanders in the area. So it’s not like we can just trust the Executive branch.
Secondly, this is more about the balance of the branches of government than it is the rights of the accused. To say that habeus corpus can be suspended is to say that the Executive branch will deny the Judiciary the chance to do its job. That’s why even a conservative Supreme Court will always defend it. When we talk about the rights of the accused, we’re also talking about the power of the Courts. And I think you’d agree that nobody gives up power willingly, or at least without a damn good reason.
Finally, if you can violate habeus corpus for anybody, then you can do it for everybody. Hypothetical example: let’s say Obama gets sick of listening to Rush Limbaugh and throws him in Gitmo. Rush’s lawyer and supporters say it’s illegal. Obama can just say “he’s a terrorist, and then any claims that he’s not, any evidence of Rush’s U.S. citizenship or anything regarding Rush’s legal status can’t even reach a court of law to begin with because (according to what you advocate) the President saying someone is a terrorist is enough to keep a court from even looking at their situation. Obama wouldn’t even have to confirm whether he was even holding Rush, because that would also involve a legal hearing in front of a judge.
This is exactly how countries get to situations like this. And I’m not going to let you do that to America.

Many people are progressive, many are conservative. The MSM has been (until recently) relatively left leaning. Rush’s ideology appealed to those who disagreed with what they were getting from the left leaning MSM. Rush basically had a monopoly on that market for many years. The founder’s at Fox saw that market and filled the conservative television void. One of the reasons the Fox ratings are high, is because the left leaning audience is divided between CNN, MSNBC, and the networks; while conservatives have only Fox.
The message at EIB or at Fox isn’t somehow truth or untruth based on ratings, it is a message that enjoys good ratings due to less competition for their audience.

Compelling people to apologize in that circumstance is more about retribution against the offender than it is solace for the offended.

3) Yes, young people DO get screened for DS. Just like with women over 35, it’s optional. Because it was offered to me on Tuesday when I was at the doctor’s office for the second appointment of my pregnancy. In addition to discussing it with my OB, I was given literature to read on the subject. Would you really like to argue this with me, “dr”?
In summary – Bullshit you went to UCDavis, and bullshit you’re a doctor. If you are a doctor, someone needs to call the licensing board, because you are incompetent and it shows.

But Rush Limbaugh really does think that Rahm Emanuel apologizing to the Special Olympics coordinators was a stupid thing to do, that it shows weakness, and that it’s more insulting to the progressives. His point was that Rahm was apologizing not for using the term, but for comparing them to progressives, which is obviously a lie.
But in any case, it is not satire.
What this boils down to here, is that Palin is afraid of Rush. As is every other conservative in the world. With that show, he called her out, practically daring her to either be consistent or make excuses for him. And she caved. Anything he does, no matter how outrageous or ridiculous, is going to be covered by the new form of IOKAYAR (It’s OK If You’re Rush). He’s basically dick-slapping the whole conservative movement and daring them to say anything except “think you sir!” So far, it’s clear that they won’t.

Since when does Rush not say anything derrogatory or offensive on his radio? Sheesh, if he actually said something nice about someone one day, I would have to ask him how much OxyContin or Vicodin was in his system as well as his mental health status.
