Bolton: Either Iran Gets Nukes Or ‘Israel Or Somebody Else Uses Military Force To Stop It’
Last week, Iran’s President Mahmoud Amadinejad said Tehran would have “no problem” agreeing on a deal to send its enriched uranium abroad for further enrichment. But today, Iran told the IAEA that it would back out of the deal and begin enriching its uranium stockpile in Iran.
On Fox News today, John Bolton declared that “Iran simply has no intention of being talked out of its nuclear weapons program” and that “very severe sanctions” will not work. Later, when host Gregg Jarrett asked if military action is “the only answer,” Bolton agreed:
JARRETT: Is military force probably in the end the only answer?
BOLTON: There are two outcomes, one is Iran getting its nuclear weapons, the other is Israel or somebody uses military force to stop it. That’s where we are.
Watch it:
Bolton has been calling for military strikes on Iran to eliminate its nuclear program for sometime, despite claiming that he “always said, that the use of force against Iran’s nuclear program is deeply unattractive.” Last year, he said that “targeted force” is the “only option.”
But Bolton conveniently never discusses the sobering consequences of military action on Iran. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said war with Iran would be “disastrous” and “the last thing we need.” “There is no military option that does anything more than buy time,” Gates said last year. Retired Gen. Anthony Zinni answered war hawks like Bolton calling for military action against Iran:
After you’ve dropped those bombs on those hardened facilities, what happens next? … [E]ventually, if you follow this all the way down, eventually I’m putting boots on the ground somewhere. And like I tell my friends, if you like Iraq and Afghanistan, you’ll love Iran.
A top defense official said an attack probably would “incentivize the Iranians to go all the way to weaponize” their nuclear material and have “a number of destabilizing” consequences for the region. Bolton actually thinks attacking Iran “would lead to greater stability in the region” but that if anything goes wrong, a simple “campaign of public diplomacy” will sort everything out.

If you’ve spent consider amounts of time conversing with Holocaust survivors, you’ll notice the instinct to survive exceeds all others. In ‘48, Israel was attacked by all neighboring countries immediately following the declaration of independence. They were blockaded in ‘56, had massive troop build-ups along the borders in ‘67, were blitzed in ‘73. Generally speaking, Israel’s policy is one of non-engagement until it’s attacked…then it strikes back with disproportional force.
They wouldn’t nuke Iran, though. Bombing a nuclear site, maybe. But they wouldn’t launch a nuke unless they Iran (or someone else) nuked them first.

What will come in 2010 and 2012 is the theme that the Dems are soft on terrorism and defense. The Republicans are going to play the fear card with the expectation that voters will elect them on this issue. At this point in time, most Americans are worrying about the economy. While the Republicans talk about security, the Dems should keep talking about the economy and job creation. The Republicans have no plans for the economy other than more tax cuts and deregulation. That is not a good selling point for the Republicans since Bush is still fresh in the voters minds. The security issue is merely to deflect attention.

What is the matter with this site? I thought it is supposed to be about thinking about progress. I keep reading, but instead it seems to spend 95% of its time dwelling on the machinations of those in the republican or teabag party who are most likely certifiably insane. While I appreciate the Bolton jokes, that is hardly “Thinking Progress”. That is clinical psychology or black humor. Its more akin to relaxing and joking around, while the planet burns.
Why are republican ideas always more important than discussing, projecting, and actually pursuing truly progressive ideas that might help make the world a better place? What about network building, political action, community development, science education, etc. that actually shows troglodytes such as Boulton that progressives have plans they are working on other than starting wars to get things done?

Iran’s government is an interesting dichotomy: it’s the only country in the region outside Israel that guarantees Jewish representation in government…yet their leadership is so vehemently opposed to Israel that it allows an actual rabid anti-semite (keep in mind, Persians aren’t technically semitic people. and Ahmadinejad is none too fond of Arabs, either) to antagonize the region’s strongest military power.
My guess is that Iran is intentionally goading Israel into a pre-emptive attack, either to gain international support or strengthen their own position. With the sheer force of the reform movement, it seems like the only thing that could keep the Ayatollah in power is an Israeli attack.

I don’t think Iran wants to provoke an attack because it would be a losing battle for Iran. They would not recover for a long time after an attack. Ajad and the ayatollah are doing a George Bush–use fear to consolidate power and popular opinion.

That is true but it is in their best interests that Israel stay strong to be a couhter balance to the Iranians. The Arab countries fear a ME dominated by Iran would jeopardize their wealth and power. I’ll see if I can find something more up to date. To be honest I don’t know a whole lot about the fatwa other than maybe 5 or 6 articles that I’ve read online. And they were all about 3-4 years old so I the info is probably out of date. And they all pretty much said the same thing as that article from the UK.

In 1953 our CIA with the blessing of president Eisenhower infiltrated and created riots in Iran to make it appear that the democratically elected Iranian prime minister Mohammad Mossadegh not only lost control of his country but also to make the Western world believe he was turning to communism in order to over throw him and replace him with the American puppet and ruthless dictator the Shah.
Why did the CIA do this? Because British Petroleum whined to Eisenhower because Mossadegh was going to nationalize the Iranian oil. Evangelical Christianity has warped the religion into a hollow shell of it’s former self. Just a money/power struggle these days. They manipulate their followers with threats of hellfire and torture and draw them in with promises of a heaven made of gold, pearls and other symbols of opulence and overindulgence which last time were never mentioned in the bible.
I’ve read forums where fundamentalists rant about putting their political opposites in labor camps or killing minorities/homosexuals and yet these idiots always bring up Stalinist labor camp scenarios whenever health care is mentioned! listen – simply put, the soviet/afghan war was a setup.. it was an obvious way for the US to fight the soviets on afghan soil – that’s just a known fact. The Pentagon uses them through subcontractors like MPRI (military professional resources incorporated) and other groups such as Black Water (Xe). As far as the actual topic, what’s the outrage all about?
All John Bolton is saying is that diplomacy WILL NOT WORK on this issue since Iran endeavors to get nuclear weapons.
He’s not saying we MUST invade. He’s saying that only a wipeout of Iran will work – and that’s not going to happen – so Iran will get Nukes and we’re going to have to deal with that reality. Politicians who think they can talk Iran out of this are foolling themsleves and BSing us.

The reason diplomacy WILL NOT work is not because we haven’t tried every which way one can. It won’t work because Iran wants nukes and there is nothing really stopping them. They’re not interested in negotiating anything. They want a seat at that nuclear-power table.
They consider sanctions an act of aggression, and it is, to an extent.
So where does that leave us, geniuses?
Nuclear Iran. Get used to it. Obama isn’t able to stop it. If Iran painted us into a corner on the issue, do you really think that Nobel-Peace prize winner President Obama would use the military on Iran? No way Jose.
If Obama says that a nuclear Iran is unacceptable, he’s trying to fool us. He’s powerless to stop it. Hillary Clinton can’t say or do anything to stop it. Russia won’t stop it. The UN can’t stop them. It’s done.

Second, what I said was they will be a nuclear power and we have to get used to it. The president is late to this dance – he can’t stop it.
Now, all the small-minded folks will default to “blame Bush” mode now. Fine, you can blame Bush but there is a huge, deep web of intricate help Iran gets on this that wasn’t stoppable. Iran focused all their resources on it – to the detriment of their citizens.
It would be as unfair as laying all the blame for Nuclear N Korea on Clinton and Albright.
So, how do you stop a country from doing something they decided they want to do when you have virtually no leverage and don’t believe they’ll follow the rules anyway?

Bolton is partially right on this one. Iran will have nukes. But an attack by the U.S. or Israel won’t stop it; it would only delay it and make them more determined to have them. We have no right to complain about our concerns that Iran might attack innocent people like we did. (Not that Israel can be considered innocent.)

It seems to be a fairly common right wing meme that we should bomb or nuke their holy sites. It’s only common sense that the loss of life and the loss of their holy places like Mecca would set them off. Of course the people who spew this stuff usually either have a screw loose or are just brainwashed. Maybe both.
