Bolton: Either Iran Gets Nukes Or ‘Israel Or Somebody Else Uses Military Force To Stop It’

Last week, Iran’s President Mahmoud Amadinejad said Tehran would have “no problem” agreeing on a deal to send its enriched uranium abroad for further enrichment. But today, Iran told the IAEA that it would back out of the deal and begin enriching its uranium stockpile in Iran.

On Fox News today, John Bolton declared that “Iran simply has no intention of being talked out of its nuclear weapons program” and that “very severe sanctions” will not work. Later, when host Gregg Jarrett asked if military action is “the only answer,” Bolton agreed:

JARRETT: Is military force probably in the end the only answer?

BOLTON: There are two outcomes, one is Iran getting its nuclear weapons, the other is Israel or somebody uses military force to stop it. That’s where we are.

Watch it:

Bolton has been calling for military strikes on Iran to eliminate its nuclear program for sometime, despite claiming that he “always said, that the use of force against Iran’s nuclear program is deeply unattractive.” Last year, he said that “targeted force” is the “only option.”

But Bolton conveniently never discusses the sobering consequences of military action on Iran. Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said war with Iran would be “disastrous” and “the last thing we need.” “There is no military option that does anything more than buy time,” Gates said last year. Retired Gen. Anthony Zinni answered war hawks like Bolton calling for military action against Iran:

After you’ve dropped those bombs on those hardened facilities, what happens next? … [E]ventually, if you follow this all the way down, eventually I’m putting boots on the ground somewhere. And like I tell my friends, if you like Iraq and Afghanistan, you’ll love Iran.

A top defense official said an attack probably would “incentivize the Iranians to go all the way to weaponize” their nuclear material and have “a number of destabilizing” consequences for the region. Bolton actually thinks attacking Iran “would lead to greater stability in the region” but that if anything goes wrong, a simple “campaign of public diplomacy” will sort everything out.

Leave it to the conservatives to believe that peace starts by dropping a friggin’ nuke.

Are all of the right’s “military experts” just a bunch of gung-ho idiots? Sure looks like it.

Bolton–wrong under Bush–wrong now–wrong tomorrow. It must gall Bolton to know MoveOn was right about Iraq and he and the neocons were so, so wrong.

Good ole John Bolton! Not satisfied with screwing up the Middle East and calling for the destruction of the UN. This guy wants endless war. What do you expect from a Neo-Con who has been known to chase secretaries in a lobby of a hotel.

Wouldn’t that violate the Geneva Convention for inhumane treatment? Inhumane treatment of the Iranians?

Crap. So air dropping him without any gear or weapons into the deserts of Iraq or the rugged terrain of Afghanistan is out of the question too? Can we at least launch him into the ocean?

Good point. And feeding him to crocs is just animal cruelty.

What about using the navy’s railgun to launch him into a condemned building. If it levels the building you would get a laugh out of it.

Or there’s the most likely option, #3… Israel or Somebody attacks Iran and the Straights of Hormuz are suddenly mined, Iran’s mullahs are assured of another 20 years of power and an ever more conservative and beligerent Iran becomes THE power player in the Middle East… thanks Bolton!

    jackass..

We could send Bolton to repair the mars lander before Nasa goes broke and when its broke radio ‘Sorry, were broke, enjoy your stay” But then the Martians would attack us for leaving WMD on their planet. Just seems no real cure to seeing the sputtering spile bunged

  20. dan_allnews says:

So Bolton’s fine with diplomacy after a U.S. military strike, but he apparently considers the use of diplomatic measures to avoid a military confrontation off the table. No matter what shortcomings the Obama administration has, Bolton is a good reminder of how far we’ve come since the Bush years.

  21. Gary Herstein says:

Would somebody please just drop this snivelling coward Bolton on Iran with a parachute, a slingshot, and an American flag lapel pin so that he can show us all how it is done?

Just think if the US pre emptively bombed Iran for fake reasons what do you think would happen? Yes Israel would set back and watch. The United Nations would see the US at anytime could attack a country when ever they wanted and we have the WMD’s to do it. Russia has already said they would protect Iran from bombs so what Bolton is saying is we’d finally have a Nuclear War between US/Russia. No need to take shelter the World would end. The Middle East watched the US invade Iraq based on lies and now Obama trying to clean up Afghanistan. I remember the fear of the Missile Crisis and how smart Americans of that time knew there are no winners in a Nuclear War. But today with bottom feeders in the Republican Party common sence isn’t avalible.

And, unlike us, Israel has a form of no-first-use. Read up on the Samson Option.

Israel refuses to acknowledge or deny their nuclear arsenal, but vows not to use it unless it’s been invaded by ground forces, suffers a chemical/nuclear/biological attack, has their air force destroyed, or suffers a major bombing attack on a large city (Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa). Yeah I know the Samson option is basically a last resort “nothing left to loose” option and that’s scary as hell. Also because we don’t know how many nukes they actually have…what if they just let all of them go?

If you’ve spent consider amounts of time conversing with Holocaust survivors, you’ll notice the instinct to survive exceeds all others. In ‘48, Israel was attacked by all neighboring countries immediately following the declaration of independence. They were blockaded in ‘56, had massive troop build-ups along the borders in ‘67, were blitzed in ‘73. Generally speaking, Israel’s policy is one of non-engagement until it’s attacked…then it strikes back with disproportional force.

They wouldn’t nuke Iran, though. Bombing a nuclear site, maybe. But they wouldn’t launch a nuke unless they Iran (or someone else) nuked them first.

  74. pags2 says:

Bolton and Palin are stalking horses for the Republican party. While conservatives eat this kind of talk up, it is merely rhetoric for the masses. What will come in 2010 and 2012 is the theme that the Dems are soft on terrorism and defense. The Republicans are going to play the fear card with the expectation that voters will elect them on this issue. At this point in time, most Americans are worrying about the economy. While the Republicans talk about security, the Dems should keep talking about the economy and job creation. The Republicans have no plans for the economy other than more tax cuts and deregulation. That is not a good selling point for the Republicans since Bush is still fresh in the voters minds. The security issue is merely to deflect attention.

What is the matter with this site? I thought it is supposed to be about thinking about progress. I keep reading, but instead it seems to spend 95% of its time dwelling on the machinations of those in the republican or teabag party who are most likely certifiably insane. While I appreciate the Bolton jokes, that is hardly “Thinking Progress”. That is clinical psychology or black humor. Its more akin to relaxing and joking around, while the planet burns.

Why are republican ideas always more important than discussing, projecting, and actually pursuing truly progressive ideas that might help make the world a better place? What about network building, political action, community development, science education, etc. that actually shows troglodytes such as Boulton that progressives have plans they are working on other than starting wars to get things done?

Just wondering. Is anyone else? Or am I just out of place here? Is this just a place for armchair progressives?

True about Israel being paranoid. I wouldn’t blame them…I mean look at how paranoid America became after 9/11. I just hope that it doesn’t come Israel lashing out…friends of mine have shown me pictures and it looks like a beautiful county with wonderful people and Iran’s people seem spirited and independent and are even willing to die for their freedoms. Iran’s government is an interesting dichotomy: it’s the only country in the region outside Israel that guarantees Jewish representation in government…yet their leadership is so vehemently opposed to Israel that it allows an actual rabid anti-semite (keep in mind, Persians aren’t technically semitic people. and Ahmadinejad is none too fond of Arabs, either) to antagonize the region’s strongest military power.

My guess is that Iran is intentionally goading Israel into a pre-emptive attack, either to gain international support or strengthen their own position. With the sheer force of the reform movement, it seems like the only thing that could keep the Ayatollah in power is an Israeli attack.

    F**k it all.

That’s an interesting theory…I didn’t think of that. So basically Iran would trick Israel into attacking them, thus reducing the reform movements strength, the Ayatollah would take full control and all hell would break loose? Correct me if I’m wrong.

Of course. Let’s say worst-case realistic scenario happens, they get a warhead working, maybe get a rocket that can clear the intervening countries, and at most they’ll have maybe what, ten of them? Meanwhile, Israel has at least 150 nukes (as Jimmy Carter famously let slip). Which means that Iran is still at a massive disadvantage no matter what. And I don’t think that Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria are going to want nukes flying over their airspace back and forth either.

There is simply no upside to anybody for starting such a thing. None whatsoever.

Regarding the fatwa, either you believe that Iran is a strict theocracy, or you don’t. If they are, then by their own religious rules, they won’t build nukes. If they aren’t, then there’s the potential to establish productive diplomatic relations with them.

That is true but it is in their best interests that Israel stay strong to be a couhter balance to the Iranians. The Arab countries fear a ME dominated by Iran would jeopardize their wealth and power. Israel recognizes that fact and that the US will not give approval for an attack unless the Iranians attack first. Israel and Egypt are the only ME powers that stand in Iran’s way. 132. pags2 says:

Iran is blustering its way through this nuclear issue. They want to be treated as a major power in the region. Israel which is the US proxy is the main obstacle because they will not let Iran get powerful enough to intimidate. This suits the Arab countries interests as well as Israel’s interests. In exchange, the Arab countries are pushing the Palestinians to the peace process. Because China is not going along with sanctions at this time, Iran is pushing back even more. However, China and Russia will not allow the Iranians to get out of hand because they have Muslims in and along their borders. Iran could potentially make things difficult for both countries by aiding Muslim extremists. This is a giant chess game with all the countries involved.

They also started revising his notions about speaking in tongues. The new Pentecostals reviewed the Bible to gain more understanding of this mysterious phenomenon, and they believed it was an intense and personal spiritual experience that resulted from prayer, but they rejected Parham’s idea that it could be useful in establishing international missions. Many had even less tolerance for his more bizarre ideas. Indeed, some of his beliefs later made him an embarrassment to the movement, particularly his belief in Anglo-Israelism, which claimed that Anglo-Saxons were descended from the ten lost tribes of Israel. The concept was closely tied with the so-called “two seed theory of Christian Identity,” which had racist and anti-Semitic overtones.”

God sent a hurricane to New Orleans, presumably, to send the sinful inhabitants some kind of message. Then, nearly five years later, He realizes that a hurricane might have been a little severe so he makes amends. His grand plan is to force Peyton Manning to throw an interception?

That poor Freeper, Brees, is trying to claim that an effing football victory, which only profits the Saints organization and bar owners, is some kind of proof that God loves New Orleans again? I almost find myself wishing that Mr. Brees’s throwing arm is torn off during the first preseason game just to hear how he would equate that with “God’s master plan”.

This enabled Mohammad Reza Pahlavi to become an authoritarian monarch[4], who went on to rule Iran, often violently, for 26 years until he was overthrown in 1979.[5]

We were busy training and arming the muhajadeen – (the ‘al queda’) – the CIA trained them and used them way back then.. and continued using them through the Balkans (Kosovo) all the way up til 9/11 – and we still use them now! The Pentagon uses them through subcontractors like MPRI (military professional resources incorporated) and other groups such as Black Water (Xe). Al queda isn’t the enemy.. they never were the enemy.. matter of fact Al Queda doesn’t even EXIST.

The ‘al queda’ isn’t even an actual group – it was a database used by the CIA of various muhajadeen that we had trained – if you don’t believe me that ‘al queda’ was just a CIA database.. it might help if I let you know that the words ‘al queda’ translate to ‘the base’.. for database.

Our use of terrorists like the Muhajadeen did go back as far as Carter.. that is true – although I can’t possibly think that Carter played any pivotal role in their creation.. it would be like saying Obama made the Afghanistan war – the CIA was responsible for creating these trained killers at this point and has used them to this day – at least as early as the end of Carter’s administration til now. The ‘war on terror’ is a sham – al queda doesn’t exist.. and any ‘terrorists’ that are against this nation are due to our planting bases around the globe, killing their people, plotting to steal their resources and pitting them in wars against each other like pawns.

When was the last time Iran attacked anybody in the area..?
When was the last time Iran threatened to attack anybody in the area?
It is Iran who was attacked by Iraq, with the help of Saudis,Kuwaities, and all Gulf states..the war lasted over 8 years,1981-1989.
These countries which run by shieks don’t even know how to use these weapons they are buying.
They are told that’s what will protect you by big military complex weapons producers, who sign them every year contracts by the billions of dollars.
When Kuwait was attacked..did the Kuwaiti army fight the Iraqis ?
No,it was the US plus other armies who came to their rescue.
In fact the Kuwaiti prince is planning a visit to Iran in the coming few days.
All of these Shieks do not want to see a new war.
Nobody in the Middle East want to see a war…except one country..that’s Israel.
In Israel’s calculation, if Iran was attacked and the regime is changed, then Israel will dominate the whole Middle East, and can set the terms for all Middle Eastern countries.
As long as Iran is there and getting stronger,Israel feels uncomfortable.
If Iran is defeated, then Israel will take all Paelstinians land, and southern lebanon’s land without any big challenge.
    That’s the whole game.
America should look for its own interests..just like Israel does.
The last two wars in the Middle East were started by Israel invading Lebanon in 2007,and attacking Gaza in 2008.
Do you know of any war that Iran started in the area that you can tell us about..?
