Hannity: Snow Storms ‘Seem To Contradict Al Gore’s Hysterical Global Warming Theories’

Last night on his Fox News show, Sean Hannity claimed that the recent spate of winter snow storms in the Washington, D.C. region clearly means that the planet isn’t warming. He then attacked Vice President Gore, calling his anti-global warming advocacy “hysterical”:

HANNITY: And tonight’s “Meltdown” is brought to you by the D.C. snow storm, you know, the storm that dumped about two feet of snow on the Washington area over the weekend causing thousands of power outages and keeping many people home from work today. And it’s the most severe winter storm in years, which would seem to contradict Al Gore’s hysterical global warming theories. [...]

Pretty unbelievable. I bet the snow even kept Al Gore’s jet from taking off.

Watch it:

Because of the recent snow storms in the Northeast, many conservatives like Hannity have taken the opportunity to take cheap shots at Gore. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) and his family mocked the former Vice President by building an igloo on the National Mall and calling it “Al Gore’s new home.” And Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) joined in as well, tweeting today that, “It’s going to keep snowing in DC until Al Gore cries ‘uncle.’”

As the Wonk Room’s Brad Johnson has explained, “winter snows do not invalidate the reality that the planet just experienced the hottest decade on record. Scientists have been warning for decades that global warming would increase the severity of winter storms.” And a recent National Wildlife Federation report has found that winter storms are getting fiercer even as the season gets warmer.

Climate expert Dr. Jeff Masters notes, “It’s not hard at all to get temperatures cold enough for snow in a world experiencing global warming. … Global warming theory predicts that global precipitation will increase, and that heavy precipitation events…will also increase,” he said, adding that this “occurs because as the climate warms, evaporation of moisture from the oceans increases, resulting in more water vapor in the air.” Indeed, the IPCC has said that atmospheric moisture has increased 5 percent over the last century.

Very clear and concise — but trollkind will still fail to understand it, because it’s cold in winter.

Don’t the icecaps get some of the least snow due to frigid temperatures? I think I recall seeing that the closer you get to freezing, the more possibility of snow falling, and that the probability of snow lessens as the temperature falls.

In other words, slightly warmer temperatures produces higher probabilities of a heavier snowfall? Or something like that?

In frigid temps, it either doesn’t snow or the snow is very fine and “dusty.” It’s often true that “it has to warm up to snow.”

Only if you are a totally ignorant moron like Hannity. And isn’t it just more proof of the right-wing propaganda at Fox that it’s Gore they dishonestly attack for this– not the scientists around the globe who agree with Gore? Including the fact that climate change/global warming will result in much more severe winter storms? Liar Hannity missed that, did he?
And did lying, stupid Hannity miss the news in the last day or two that the ice packs are disappearing at an alarming rate, much faster than originally predicted?
Hannity is a lying, Repub propaganda-spewing fool. And isn’t it completely revolting that lying, stupid, ignorant, hateful, racist idiots like Hannity can be paid millions to spout their drivel & hatred? Something is very wrong with the media in the U.S., and the corporations – Fox being the worst- that not only allow this sort of garbage to be broadcast, but also promote it blatantly and pay liars to feed their lies to (apparently) a very stupid public.

The entire house of cards called “man-made” global warming (or climate change if you prefer) is falling down right in front of our eyes, but inevitably some will choose to cover them so they won’t SEE!

The only people walking around with their eyes covered are those that try to deny that climate change is happening and in the process, ignore the hundreds of studies/experts who say that it is happening.

Howie Carr of right wing radio in Boston is always saying, “It’s 25 degrees here today! Global warming isn’t real! It’s a hoax!”, because according to Howie in Boston it’s never cold in the winter (untrue) or in Maine (untrue), so he bases GLOBAL warming on the city of Boston temperature.

Do you know why there isn’t any natural snow at the Winter Olympics in Canada this year? And I don’t want to hear, “But Kay! It’s February! It’s always nice and warm in February in Canada for crying out loud!”.

  166. billancourt says:

Good analysis. I cannot understand why proponents of action for the environment have allowed a broad range of problems to be regrouped under a catch phrase like “climate change” or “global warming”. The world is experiencing a global environmental crisis. Based solely on proven scientific fact and witnessed events, all intelligent beings, which of course excludes people like Hannity, will agree on four basic points concerning the environment. The world’s ressources are finite and we have used up a large portion of the available supply. Emissions of pollutants do not help the atmosphere and contribute to the green house effect. The planet offers a limited ammount of space and basic neccessities and cannot support an ever increasing and uncontrolled population. There will be a new national security question on the near horizon, that of mass migration. Pundits and experts that know that we need to take action in these four aforementioned domains should change the rhetoric from trying to prove that a catch phrase such as “global warming” exists, and speak of the problem as a whole. There is an excellent book, written by Jean Marc Jancovici, a French guy, that explains the global environmental situation. In his book “three days to save the planet” (trois jours pour sauver le monde), Jancovici uses metaphores and allegories that even an ignoramus like Hannity could,(could being the operative word) understand. This cretin proffesses to be a man of God. Bullshit! According to Hannity’s God,(not unlike his America),the planet is God’s creation. If the planet is God’s creation then is it not a sin for a pious believer like Hannity to promote Earth’s ruin ? Hannity’s America is an America where obese bigots selfishly rape the planet and pillage her ressources. The whole idea behind preying on the fears of the simple minded, is that it steers public opinion away from the real problems. Hannity has children, he should be ashamed of himself.

Merely throwing a hand grenade, a construct of scientists like myself, only proves that one has an ability to count to a very small number and enough coordination to propel a weight away from one’s body. The only expertise required to throw a grenade is the bare minimum needed to find cover before that small number is reached.

Increased precipitation is a sign of global warming

Explain to me then why the snow-pack in the Rockies has been down the last 10 years or so? Skiing has been horrible in places.

For one thing, the effects of global warming aren’t the same everywhere. The Rockies are nowhere near a major body of water to turn thermal energy into Winter blizzards. Furthermore, it appears the measured yearly snowpack there is decreasing due to the fact that Spring is coming earlier and earlier to that region every year.

    So, thanks for asking.

    .

    Tim Vaculik says:

O.K., after reading all the posts and counter posts about winter, I think it’s safe to say that you can’t read too much into the fact that there is MORE or LESS snow.

I agree. That’s what we mean when we keep pointing out the difference between climate and weather. What can be predicted by global warming however, is rapid changes in weather from year to year in a great number of places around the world. Put more energy in a system, and the system becomes increasingly variable.

    .

    Tim Vaculik says:

We quote things that support our point of view here because it takes too much time to delve into any subject too deeply. This is especially true when it comes to science.

We’ve delved into it. It’s not that terribly hard. The problem is… here, let me summarize the history of the argument:

    1. Climate scientists notice the world cycling hotter and hotter over a five year trend, with no natural explanation.
    2. Climate scientists notice atmospheric CO2 cycling greater and greater over the same period, with no natural explanation.
    3. Climate scientists posit that the increase in CO2, a greenhouse gas, is causing the increase in mean global temperature.
    4. Climate scientists and others note that the increase in atmospheric CO2 matches the increase in human industrial activity.
    5. It is also pointed out that humans have been burning vast quantities of various stuff for the last 150 years.
    6. Wingnuts start screaming that all of the above has been faked!

In being concerned about this, we don’t have any ulterior motive. You’re the ones with the agenda here. I’d be perfectly happy if it turned out that the Earth’s atmosphere had some method of absorbing and/or neutralizing the increased CO2 that we’ve been dumping into the atmosphere since the Victorian Age. That’d be great! But you draw no distinction between what is the case and what you hope is the case, and there is no amount of evidence that could be presented which would change your mind.

That’s how everybody can tell you’re wrong.

    .

    Kenneth says:

I get my news down at the corner of Common & Sense.

In other words, you make it up.

    .

the himalayan fraud also exposed. why do progressives cherry pick their data?

Let’s see what you’re talking about:

Meanwhile, leading glaciologist and senior fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute, Syed Iqbal Hasnain, who was quoted in New Scientist and Down to Earth magazines as saying Himalayan glaciers were likely to disappear by 2035, defended himself, saying, “I must stress that a journalistic substitution of the year 2035 was made — without my knowledge and approval — that was markedly contrary to my research supported finding of the likelihood of the central and eastern Himalayan glaciers disappearing in 40-50 years.”

OK, so the Himalayan glaciers will all be gone in 2050-2060 instead of 2035. How does that support your position at all?

I understand the science. Thousands of other scientists, including a great many with doctorates in climate science, can explain it better than a devoted amateur like myself can hope for.

But? Any objective observer will soon realize that those who think global warming is a “hoax” don’t have a single reputable scientist on their side. If you want to examine the merits of the “sides” it’s very simple.

Thousands of scientists are past debating the existence and causes of global warming. That’s “our side”. The other side has profoundly ignorant people like Inshannity and Jimmy Inhofe.

Considering he inherited significant stakes in coal and oil interests, the fact that he’s investing his own money in clean energy would suggest he really believes in it. If his motive was financial, it would be more efficient to keep his stake in petrochemicals and deny global warming, as your masters do.

    .

    patrick5 says:

Errors in IPCC Report. Here is a start on your education.

Already dealt with back in post 203.

    http://www.prlog.org/10501056-himalayan-climate-change-controversy.html

  307. Laszlo Panaflex says:

    patrick5 says:

    New York Times.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/09/science/earth/09climate.html

    Some excerpts:

“Several of the recent accusations have proved to be half-truths …. The panel, in reviewing complaints about possible errors in its report, has so far found that one was justified and another was “baseless.” The general consensus among mainstream scientists is that the errors are in any case minor and do not undermine the report’s conclusions.”

““These people want to distort the picture for their own ends,” Dr. Pachauri said, noting that the report was released two years ago and that the criticisms were only now coming into the limelight.”

    etc.

  308. Gary Herstein says:

A couple of errors in the WG2 &/or WG3 reports does not qualify as “error riddled,” a fact which even someone as grotesguely stupid as TT ought to know, but is clearly too cognitively vacuous to even try to understand.

One discussion by actual scientists can be found here:
    http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2010/01/the-ipcc-is-not-infallible-shock/

A point to keep in mind is that the WG2 and WG3 committees were expressly permitted to incorporate “gray” literature into their reports. The scientific basic committee, WG1, was permitted no such latitude.

Again, as everyone who is not a slobbering imbecile long ago figured out (and hence, remains a complete mystery to the likes of TT, BBBalls and their vapid, pathetic ilk) the presence of a couple of inconsequential errors that amount to nothing more than single paragraphs in publications that come to many hundreds of pages bears no significant weight WRT the overall report, the conclusions of which have not only been proven to be consistently, but overwhelmingly conservative in the light of accumulating empirical evidence.

Did you read the article you linked?

Several of the recent accusations have proved to be half-truths: While Dr. Pachauri does act as a paid consultant and adviser to many companies, he makes no money from these activities, he said. The payments go to the Energy and Resources Institute, the prestigious nonprofit research center based in Delhi that he founded in 1982 and still leads, where the money finances charitable projects like Lighting a Billion Lives, which provides solar lanterns in rural India.

The panel, in reviewing complaints about possible errors in its report, has so far found that one was justified and another was “baseless.” The general consensus among mainstream scientists is that the errors are in any case minor and do not undermine the report’s conclusions

    Thanks for playing.

  314. Gary Herstein says:

    336. patrick5 says:

How many mistakes does a scientific study have to have before it is called BS? The IPCC is currently at over a dozen

As I just noted, the errors that are most prominent are the ones where the IPCC substantially underestimated the speed and devastation of the oncoming anthropogenic climate forcings. As people who — unlike you — are actually capable of some infinitessimal scintilla of cognitive activity can easily figure out for themselves, the main problem with the IPCC AR4 is that it understated the problems of AGW.

  326. ElBruce, owned and operated by NewsCorp, Inc. says:

For anybody who’s starting to get confused by the wingnuts’ campaign to confuse everybody, here’s a nice overview of the situation regarding this IPCC report

The head of the UN’s climate change body is under pressure to resign after one of his strongest allies in the environmental movement said his judgment was flawed and called for a new leader to restore confidence in climatic science.

Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), has insisted that he will remain in post for another four years despite having failed to act on a serious error in the body’s 2007 report.

John Sauven, director of Greenpeace UK , said that Dr Pachauri should have acted as soon as he had been informed of the error, even though issuing a correction would have embarrassed the IPCC on the eve of the Copenhagen climate summit.

A journalist working for Science had told Dr Pachauri several times late last year that glaciologists had refuted the IPCC claim that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035. Dr Pachauri refused to address the problem, saying: “I don’t have anything to add on glaciers.” He suggested that the error would not be corrected until 2013 or 2014, when the IPCC next reported.

So what was the error? For the third time in this thread, here:

Meanwhile, leading glaciologist and senior fellow at The Energy and Resources Institute, Syed Iqbal Hasnain, who was quoted in New Scientist and Down to Earth magazines as saying Himalayan glaciers were likely to disappear by 2035, defended himself, saying, “I must stress that a journalistic substitution of the year 2035 was made — without my knowledge and approval — that was markedly contrary to my research supported finding of the likelihood of the central and eastern Himalayan glaciers disappearing in 40-50 years.”

The only error here was regarding when the Himalayan glaciers will have vanished, not whether they will or what’s causing it. That’s it. That’s what patrick5 is using to howl that global warming is a hoax.

Wow, that’s amazing. To think that literally millions of websites repeated that quote in a the denier echo chamber without a single one of them checking the source to see if it was true.

Which just goes to show the upside-down degree of proof required for each side. According to the wingnuts, climate scientists have to provide 100% perfect information at all times; if any one of them ever makes an error, then the whole thing is a hoax. On the other hand, the deniers themselves are free to be factually incorrect on pretty much a constant basis, and as far as wingnuts are concerned it’s all OK.

    Pete – Reggie

I know the stupid Jeffy Bovine “Internet vigilante” and his Mark Koldys boyfriends will read this and think they have hit the gold mine.

Banning IP addresses does not work because now Internet providers assign random IPs addys (within ranges and to their discretion) to thwart cyber attacks through their networks.
In addition, there is the use of proxies.

So, how does one site gets rid of unwanted pests?
    - Live moderators.

The problems with moderated commenting are:
    1) Slows down the interactivity of the site.
    2) Requires a human reading every single post (volunteers or paid employees)

Reggie, you may remember this was one of Twatjies claims to fame.

In my opinion, the current up/down vote system used by Think Progress works pretty well because it leaves to the rest of the community the decision to shut down a comment. Also, it doesn’t take but a few seconds to read a few words and understand the meaning of a post, especially when its author has earned a reputation and is familiar to the rest of the community.

The next step, as Pete mentioned, would be a system allowing the community to ban a given user after a certain number of posts have been voted down.

I suppose that is the purpose of the “flag” feature, which leads to the questions of, does anyone actually use it? Does the TP staff actually read the flag reports?

I think the answer is right there. A combination of “voted down” comments and “flagged” comments.

We all know the moron trolls don’t have the numbers.
If a troll accumulates a certain number of “voted down” comments it should be equal to a number of “flags” within a thread, then the clown and its moniker will be expelled by the system. No live moderation required.

    Reggie,

Please keep in mind the Olbermann stalker site is a creation of and supposedly run by Robert Cox. He also has another blog, Media Bloggers Association where he is “president.”

On the other hand, I have also emailed Faiz directly with specific and flagrant instances of abuse, two death threats and two “namejackings”, and those monikers have not reappeared. I realize that it’s impossible, short of holding comments for review, to eliminate the trolls and I don’t advocate that. It would destroy the spontaneity and, probably, force a lot of good people to give up. However, TP could make it more difficult, and frustrating, to willfully abuse the system. If nothing else, I would enjoy the image of a stupid troll, teeth gnashed and face red, being forced to switch identities every few minutes. It is not uncommon for the skiing on Cypress Mountain to go to shit in the middle of winter. I can’t believe they put any events there. They must have known the risks.

Vancouver itself does not get much snow during the year. When it does snow, the snow doesn’t stick around. Also when it snows in Vancouver, be very careful driving because you would think that these people lived in Texas and only see snow once in fifty years. They cannot drive in snow.

This has nothing to do with global climate change in particular.

Terry, oddly enough, Calgary had similar problems in 1988. They created a brand new hill for downhill skiing because they thought all the great hills like Lake Louise and Sunshine Village were too far away (1.5 and 2 hours away). The ski hill they made was on the east side of the rockies – most of the snow falls west of the great divide. They barely got the events in and the ski hill is now not in operation. There was also weather problem that year. Leading up to the games, Calgary had 90 days of above normal temperatures. The bobsleigh and luge track was melting.

Arctic sea ice vanishing faster than ‘our most pessimistic models’: researcher

Barber and more than 300 scientists from around the globe spent last winter on the Canadian Coast Guard research ship Amundsen in the Arctic, studying the impact of climate change. It was the first time a research vessel remained mobile in open water during the winter season. The Canadian government provided $156 million in funding for the study.

Barber said the melting sea ice can be compared to disappearing rain forests.

“If you go into the rain forest and you cut down all the trees, the ecosystem in that rain forest will collapse,” he said. “If you go to the Arctic and you remove all the sea ice or if you remove the timing of the sea ice, the system will change.”

That change will include more invasive species moving up from the South and species that live in the Far North having to adapt to a different environment.

The occurrence of Arctic cyclones is also on the rise, which contributes to ice breakup.

Barber said before the expedition that climate scientists were working under the theory that climate change would happen much more slowly. It was assumed the Arctic would be ice-free in the winter by 2100.

“We expect it will happen much faster than that, much earlier than that, somewhere between 2013 and 2030 are our estimates right now. So it’s much faster than what we would expect to happen. That can be said for southern climates as well.”

In addition, his wild-eyed, childishly hysterical accusations about the IPCC are equally pathetic and baseless:

  412. linzloo08 brought to you by Kaiser Permanente says:

    From the EPA:
    Recent Climate Change:

Since the Industrial Revolution (around 1750), human activities have substantially added to the amount of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The burning of fossil fuels and biomass (living matter such as vegetation) has also resulted in emissions of aerosols that absorb and emit heat, and reflect light.

The addition of greenhouse gases and aerosols has changed the composition of the atmosphere. The changes in the atmosphere have likely influenced temperature, precipitation, storms and sea level (IPCC, 2007). However, these features of the climate also vary naturally, so determining what fraction of climate changes are due to natural variability versus human activities is challenging.

Even the EPA adknowldeges that there is some climate change occuring naturally, dingbat! The thing is, we human are causing it to happen at a much faster rate than it has happened in the past.

  413. linzloo08 brought to you by Kaiser Permanente says:

From UNEP ( United Nations Environmental Programme):

The accelerated shrinking of mountain glaciers on every continent, rapid reduction of Arctic sea ice, disintegration of floating ice shelves, and increased melt rates of Earth’s three Ice Sheets –Greenland, West Antarctic, and East Antarctic provide compelling evidence of our changing climate.

There you go, dingbat! Proof that most of the Earth’s ice is melting due to increasing temperatures.

    PezDispenser,
Do you pride yourself on being so incredibly stupid and thick-headed?

  415. linzloo08 brought to you by Kaiser Permanente says:

    also from the UNEP:
So you don’t accuse me of cherry-picking my facts:

    Implications of sea-ice loss

The implications of so little multi-year ice in the Arctic are now being investigated.

First-year ice melts more quickly, so larger areas of open water will be exposed to solar radiation earlier in the year, which will increase both sea and atmospheric temperatures. The larger heat transfer from the ocean to the atmosphere—the maritime effect—will help moderate autumn and winter cold temperatures. As ice retreats from shorelines, winds gain a longer fetch over open water, resulting in stronger waves and increased shore erosion.

Satellite measurements of winter multi-year ice cover in the Arctic Ocean between 2004 and 2008, along with the corresponding downward trend in overall winter sea-ice volume, and switch in dominant ice type from multi-year ice to !rst-year ice. Source: Kwok et al. 2009

More serious complications result from the potential release of methane and carbon dioxide that are currently frozen in Arctic soils. The expected rapid soil thaw could also produce a talik—a layer of permanently unfrozen soil sandwiched between the seasonally frozen layer above and the perennially frozen layer below—which in turn creates a more rapid heat build-up in the soil, further accelerating the long-term thaw and release of carbon dioxide (Lawrence et al. 2009, UNEP 2008c, Serreze et al. 2007, Jones et al. 2009, Jones et al. 2008, Mars and Houseknecht 2007).

    Understand?

  416. Gary Herstein says:

Pismouth, everyone understands that you wear diapers because you’re too stupid to achieve even elementary (alimentary?) levels of toilet training; unsurprisingly, since the yellow drool is so excessive with you, when there’s no more room for it to come out your rear end, it comes out all of the others.

As anyone coapable of reading at even a third grade level could easily understand by doing nothing more exotic than actually reading — so obviously entirelyt beyond your ability to even imagine — citing a single report on the collapse of arctic sea ice cannot possibly be construed as denying that ice in the antarctic was also under discussion.

At least, not anyone capable of any activity which might, by some reckless stretch of the imagination, ever be construed as at least showing some infinitessimal sign of thought or logic. So of course we understand how it is that you necessasrily cannot understand something that a philodendron could easily grasp.

Also, as anyone possessed of no more integrity than a cockroach could easily figure out for himself, the rebound of polar bear populations was a direct response to changes in human predations. (That last is a fancy word for “hunting” — you know, “shootin’ stuff.”)

Again, this point involves no possible difficulty to either discover or understand, yet you are so pathetically infantile, lazy and just flat-out butt-stupid that even after the fact — the manifestly obvious and irrefutable FACT — has been repeatedly pointed out to you in terms that any “learning disadvantaged” six year old could easily grasp, it continues to just zoom right past whatever the excremental process is that you substitute for cognition.

    Gary,
Is PezDispenser a troll sent here to disrupt an intelligent debate or are they actually interested in debating facts?

Rhetorical, a bit. But an excuse for me to pontificate:

Reasoned inquiry depends — in decreasing order of abstraction — upon logic, principles, evidence and facts. Ideology tends to reject all of these, and ideology that has turned into Identity must go beyond rejection and necessarily engage in extirpation. Because anything that challenges the (again, necessarily) thoughtless ideology catastrophically undermines the entire basis of the person’s sense of self-identity.

The puling, spineless, gutless wretches that troll here have no interest in discussing ANYTHING, much less honestly engaging logic, principles, evidence or facts at any level. They are here only to confirm their self as their self. Devoid of any shred of genuine personhood, they must go forth as missionaries and martyrs to demonstrate their reality to themselves by the very ruthlessness of their absolute disregard of, and overt contempt for, anything which might even possibly qualify as genuine intellectual honesty.

To anyone possessed of nothing more concrete than the abstract possibility of intellectual integrity it is scarcely imaginable how anyone could ever be so vacuous as to stoop to this sort of behavior. But for the trolls the alternative would actually require that they pass with in some cosmological distance of real self-awareness.

And these pathetic swine will burn the world to cinders before they ever permit such a moment of honesty to occur within their universe.

Those who still blindly believe, liberal activists and politicians, are delusional, stupid and/or corrupt.

If you looking for a relation to rise and fall of temperatures, you will find better correlation to sun activity then you would with CO2. CO2 has 800 year lag.

Again you have no facts to man made global warming or CO2 as a cause. All you have is garbage loony kook theories.

The Great Global Warming Swindle has been shown to be a fraud by this greenman video

    Reggie,

Only those whose religion is the environment still believe in AGW.

No, it’s only those whose only faith is science.

    Project much?

You posted this identical text in another thread. Sun activity does not correlate to global temperatures. CO2 does not have an 800 year lag.

Well then, please allow me to assist. I have Googles: here are facts from NASA, NOAA, and USGS Which NMF are you talking about?

Only those whose religion is the environment still believe in AGW. The lying (so-called) scientists who started the idea have been proven to be frauds. They should be put in jail.

Since there is no evidence that man causes global climate change, it is therefore purely a matter of faith.

No evidence? Just ask the EPA or the people living near the Artic Circle, silly.

If it were not a religion, man-made global warming would have been proven empirically with honestly collected data and detailed procedures that were widely peer-reviewed with consistently repeatable results.

    Religion? Are you insane?

I believe that most of the “scientists” knew it was all a fraud but it was their gravy train so they just went along.

    Prove it.

Those who still blindly believe, liberal activists and politicians, are delusional, stupid and/or corrupt.
    Again, prove it.
