Christian Hate Group ‘Repent Amarillo’ Terrorizes Texas Town, Harassing Gays, Liberals, And Other ‘Sinners’

An evangelical Christian hate group called “Repent Amarillo” is reportedly terrorizing the town of Amarillo, Texas. Repent fashions itself as a sort of militia and targets a wide range of community members they deem offensive to their theology: gays, liberal Christians, Muslims, environmentalists, breast cancer events that do not highlight abortion, Halloween, “spring break events,” and pornography shops. On its website, Repent has posted a “Warfare Map” of its enemies in town.

Calling Repent an “American Taliban,” blogger Charles Johnson notes that the group’s moniker “Army of God” is a rough translation of “Hezbollah.” Led by a man named David Grisham, a security guard at a nuclear-bomb facility called Pantex, Repent first gained media attention in Texas following a campaign to boycott Houston for electing a gay mayor. The group, which is associated with Raven Ministries, collaborates with other Christian groups as well as forced pregnancy advocacy associations like “Bound 4 Life.”

According to a new exposé by the Texas Observer, Repent set out earlier this year to destroy a discreet club of swingers they discovered in town. On New Years eve, the harassment began, with Repent members, almost exclusively young men, showing up in military fatigues and bullhorns, blaring Christian music at the swingers’ club building. The swingers, made up of “regulars” of middle aged, working class couples, were then stalked at every following visit to the club. Repent not only took video of each member, but obtained the swingers’ license plates and dug through their trash, informing neighbors and coworkers of what was once private. Watch a Texas Observer report:

Repent has struck with some success at many of its enemies within the town. A community theater attempted to open “Bent,” a play about the persecution of homosexuals during Nazi Germany. But the day before opening night, Repent members helped shut down the play by calling in fire marshals to complain about the theater’s permit. Staffers at a nature preserve were featured on local news defending themselves against Repent accusations that their site represents something related to witchcraft.

But grassroots opposition to Repent is also building. A group called “Angel Action” has mobilized against Repent, and blogs and Amarillo-based Facebook groups are springing up to protest Repent’s hate. (HT: LGF)

IMHO someone would probably have a higher chance just building a dirty bomb rather than having to go out and infiltrating a government facility to attain a nuclear warhead. But even if you were to get a job as a security guard…I would bet you would require special access to even transport a nuke and I bet there would probably be a certain amount of surveillance and security. It’s theoretically possible but I seriously doubt any normal person who’s working alone could smuggle a nuke away.

Not exactly anything new though. Through out the history of their religion, Christian fundies have always howled for riches, power (or to push their agenda) and the blood of their enemies. And did often torment or kill in cold blood to achieve that goal.

Even worse is the fact that there are some of them who think that they can justify the abuse by saying their version of God (which is pretty much a blood God) said to show the heretics some “genuine True-Christian love”. Or some shit like that.

  61. pags2 says:

    Fraze says:
I am beginning to seriously wonder how is your country any different than the so called “islamic terrorists”….

The difference is that there are a lot of people that want religion to steer clear of politics. There is a significant vocal religious minority that has existed since the SCOTUS ended prayer in the public schools. This group is primarily fundamentalist Christians who would like to think all of the country’s ills are due to the disentangling of religion from politics. The fundamentalist preachers had great influence on many facets of life, particularly in the south. Once the SCOTUS started to enforce the separation of church and state, the preachers lost their influence. Naturally, people who lose power crave to have it back. The abortion decision was the catalyst for these fundamentalists to reorganize. When the Republicans embraced the fundamentalists, these zealots took it as a license to attack anything they disagree with. The majority of Americans prefer keeping religion separate from politics. They do not let their religion dictate their votes.

Interesting. One would need to be able to obtain/maintain a TS/SCI clearance (along with a lifestyle polygraph) to work at a “nuclear bomb facility”. Either this information (that he works at such a facility) is not accurate, or someone massively screwed up in giving this guy a clearance. I’ve seen many people with clearances that should not have them, though.

In any case it’s next to impossible (in the US anyway) for one or a few people to “steal” a warhead and plain impossible for them to detonate it. They could build a dirty bomb out of the fissile material, though.

In my experience, it generally does not work that way. The people that *approve* your access to a given resource, be it information, a facility, or physical assets are not the same people that actually issue you a badge, give you a pin, scan your retinas, etc. These are two different functions and this is by design. After how many years, and how many deaths?

The lawsuit was for a specific incident and not for the old history. It will take one incident and if someone sues and wins, they will collect the judgment from everyone involved with the group. The day after the lawsuit is filed the group will splinter because no one wants to lose their assets.

When they choose to espouse it in a public place or in any form of media (or use God to justify criminality up to and including terrorism even chemical/bio/nuclear terrorism), that is when it causes massive problems. I think IMHO this is the reason why fundies have lost the right to preach to anyone (especially atheists and agnostics) about morality.

To be completely honest, I try to be tolerant of Christianity but the fundies when they pull shit like this make it becomes really difficult to remember that this perversion of the mainstream Christian message is nothing like what the majority of the members of the faith believe, just as the extreme views of Osama Bin Laden or Abu Hamza al-Masri are not the views of every single person who belongs to the Islamic faith.

I think that’s the most terrifying thing to me about people committing heinous acts in the name of God, for example: there are the terrorists in both America and the middle-east and there are the idiots in Africa hunting anyone they consider to be a “witch” because they think their God will be pleased if they kill enough of the people that they hate. Meanwhile, mainstream fundamentalists in America massage their “come to me Jesus” erections at the thought of more massacres, more deaths and less human rights.

These messed up people need to have their power trips cut short before they do commit an act of unspeakable terror. And I agree about the majority: the extremist followers of Islam and Christianity didn’t pervert those religions. They exploited the existing perversion. And the “normal” followers were either oppressed before they could say anything about it or they’re just too afraid to say anything about it. I don’t think that will change anytime soon. Seems to be a common thing with organized religion at least historically.

I have four close friends that are all ordained ministers, and a couple of others that are very religious. They all know I’m atheist, and we get along fine. We don’t question each others “morality” (mainly because we all know all of each others “sins”).

I personally think that if you are going to preach religion, you should have no say in politics, you should be “above” that. If you are going to preach politics you shouldn’t preach religion.

There are only three atheists in my family: my grand father (who passed away), myself and my sister. Most of my family is composed of I guess you could call them “secular Christians” who grew tired of the mainstream churches and their habit of closing their minds to any other beliefs and sequestering themselves away from any conflicting ideas while ridiculing others for their ridiculous beliefs and feeling smug and superior for it. They also support the separation of church and state for obvious reasons.

And exactly. Nobody else’s BS should not be able to take precedence over the BS another guy believes. Therefore, no tax money may be used to teach Christianity to children or to promote all religions in public places/politics. If we were to allow this, then tax money must be used to educate these same children about other religions or promote other religions in our political system. Fortunately, our Constitutional framers recognized that slippery slope and the danger that came with mixing religion and politics. And vice-versa like you said.

Sorry it’s a really dumbed down view of separation of church and state.

Freedom is a state of mind as much as it is anything. If you are convinced that freedom is not free, you will never be free and neither will those around you.

You’re anxious about something; that’s pretty obvious. What is it? Who has hurt you? Why do you feel the need to strike out at those around you who mean you no harm? After all, if you weren’t looking for something to hate, you’d have a hard time finding something to hate.

[23] All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

It’s the job of a military to kill and if your styling yourself after one chances are you intend to kill.

I’m not very worried though since this group seems likely to run afowl of the law long before they kill anyone.

  191. wizard2000 says:

In late 2001, shortly after the right-wing religious fundamentalist terrorist attacks on 9/11, and shortly after the first lethal anthrax terrorist mailing targeting two Democratic Party U.S. senators and some publications, a self-proclaimed Army of God member escaped from prison in the Mid-West and proceeded to mail-out about 500 non-lethal powder-filled copycat terrorist letters to family planning centers before he was recaptured.

And now some right-wing religious fundamentalist terrorists in Amarillo Texas are terrorizing U.S. citizens…in the name of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace?

    Go figure.

If anything, federal authorities*** should bring the full weight of the law down on these conservative cretins before they end up killing someone, especially checking to see if these people have been mailing anything suspicious.

***I would have said “state authorities” and/or “local authorities” in Texas, but these conservative cretins are no-doubt loyal followers of Gov. Rick Perry and other top Republican officials in Texas, thus are being protected…even though these conservative cretins’ idea of “freedom of speech and assembly” translates into terrorizing other U.S. citizens.

Evil is as evil does. God save us from righteous conservative cretins, but especially of the religious fundamentalist kind. 9/11, the anthrax mailings, and now this crap out of Amarillo (and no doubt many other U.S. communities where right-wing religious fundamentalist terrorists are active). I have had just about enough of Halloween as well. That f uckin candy corn really pisses me off…

    From Lewis Black:
The worst thing about Halloween is, of course, candy corn. It’s unbelievable to me. Candy corn is the only candy in the history of America that’s never been advertised. And there’s a reason. All of the candy corn that was ever made was made in 1911. And so, since nobody eats that stuff, every year there’s a ton of it left over. And the candy corn company sends the guys to the villages and they collect out of the dumpsters all the candy corn we’ve thrown away. They wash it!! They wash it!

I’ll never forget the first time my mother gave me candy corn. She said, “Here–Lewis, this is candy corn. It’s corn that tastes like candy’ This tastes like crap! And every year since then, Halloween has returned and I, like an Alzheimer’s patient, find myself in the room, and the room has a big table in it, and on the table is a bowl of candy corn. And I look at it as if I’ve never seen it before. “Candy corn,” I think. “Corn that tastes like candy. I can’t wait.” Son of a b!tch!

I recommend to all of you, and particularly those who think “it can’t happen here,” Allan Drury’s excellent six-volume fictional account of how it CAN happen here. Start with “Advise and Consent,” and continue with “A Shade of Difference,” “Capable of Honor” and “Preserve and Protect.” At the end of the fourth book, a situation exactly like Bush v. Gore in 2000 occurs. In the fifth book, “Come Nineveh, Come Tyre,” the right-wing candidate is elected. At the disastrous end of that novel, Drury returns to the pivotal situation and in the final book, “The Promise of Joy” (1975), takes the installation of the left-wing candidate to ITS conclusion. Almost as terrifying, but definitely ending with “the promise of joy.”

Is LEADING this para militaristic “Army of God”? :| What the what??? March 4th, 2010 at 7:29 pm

Notice? What? Oh, that. Pantex. Aw, don’t worry, Thelonius. Pantex isn’t a nuclear bomb facility. It’s the nuclear weapons facility. It’s the final assembly point for every weapon, whether that be a missile warhead, a gravity bomb, whatever, before the weapon is deployed to the military user. It’s also the maintenance and desassembly point for all weapons being returned from the field or being retired. Pantex is, effectively, the hardware interface between the DOE weapons complex and the DOD user community; it’s where weapons get signed out to DOD.

And they’ve got some charismatic crazy on the guard force who’s running a harassment and extortion campaign in Amarillo. Damn. That’s a little more entertainment than I care for.

Well, no, they don’t. Those that work at Pantex need to be fired because we don’t need people who are taking orders from the imaginary playmate anywhere near nuclear weapons. If they’re not working at Pantex, they’re free to risk life and limb harassing their neighbors and friends; that seems to be the Texas way. Lynch mobs and all that, ya know. But they can’t do that and have access to a nuclear weapons facility.

@ 92. analog kid says: Interesting. March 4th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Pantex isn’t a DOD weapons facility, it’s DOE. DOE’s clearance, at the TS/SCI level is called a “Q” clearance*, and the compartmentalization is referred to by “Sigma” codes, rather than whatever the SCI codes are. Per my note at #378, Pantex has complete assemblies of warheads and gravity bombs, etc, plus assemblies in various states of teardown, cores, pits, etc. Physics package, anyone?

I think that the Q designation stems from the original clearance system used by the AEC, which had as it’s central, fundamental document, the Personal Security Questionaire, or PSQ for short, and then just Q. That came out of the clearance system used for the Manhattan Project and a couple of other high security projects during WW II.

It’s only for the mainstream Christians, who generally abjure violence and try to practice the teachings that Christian Hate would be an oxymoron.

That’s whay it’s useful to limit the label of Christian to those who actually try practice the teachings, however imperfectly. I prefer the label Christianist or Christo-Fascist for the Grishams, Phelps, Dobsons, Falwells, Robertsons and other who only pay lip service to the teaching while practicing violence, hate, and picking the pockets of the congregation.

Actually, it’s really not all that bad. Most of the average citizens of Amarillo are freindly and believe in treating others with respect and American values.

It’s these self-described “c”hristian terrorists of “RA” that are the embodiment of anti-Americanism and spit on the true Christian faith with their blasphemy.

This is just a few more of the far fight Texas Taliban.

There are just enough intelligent people in Texas that they were able to kick two of the wackos off the Texas school board.

I’ve been to Amarillo a few times and it wasn’t that bad of a place. But, if you really want to get an idea of how the Grishams of the world operate on a larger scale and with more money, go to Colorado Springs, Colorado. There you have Focus on the Family, among other organizations. All cut from the same cloth. 30 years ago, Colorado Springs was a paradise; now, it’s infested with in your face Christians.

Exactly! Why can’t those perverts keep it to themsleves? Why do they have to shove their religious lifestyle in everyone’s faces?

(I just LOVE throwing the right-whiners words back in their faces, in the EXACT same manner in which they use then to bash other people and attempt to deny their detractors of their American civil rights!)

  368. doktorgizemli says:

Of course, when conservatives talk about rights, they mean “white-guy rights.”

Republicans and their ilk love to prattle on about rights. But it’s only the rights that are important to white males–mostly the right to badmouth people and the “right” to brandish guns.

In winger utopia, white-guy aşk şiirleri rights will be inviolable. But there will be no privacy, especially in sexual matters. Gays will be çiçek constantly watched; women will be forced to have babies; and people will be allowed to criticize only Democrat Presidents.

You lads need some lefty skinheads down there. Promise you those Church groups won’t bother anyone with the redboots around…
