Pentagon Shooter Was Right-Wing, Anti-Government Terrorist
Last night, a California man armed with two semiautomatic weapons and “many magazines” of ammunition opened fire on police officers at the entrance to the Pentagon, wounding two before being killed by police. The shooter, 36-year-old John Patrick Bedell, was “well dressed in a suit” and “very calm,” walking “very directly to the officers” before engaging them, a police spokesman said.
Bedell “appears to have been a right-wing extremist with virulent antigovernment feelings,” the Christian Science Monitor reports, who traveled from California specifically to attack the Pentagon. While police were hesitant to assign a motive, “writings by someone with his same name and birth date, posted on the Internet, express ill will toward the government and the armed forces and question whether Washington itself might have been behind the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.”
In one posting, Bedell ranted against “big government.” In another, he wrote, “I am determined to see that justice is served in the death of Colonel James Sabow” — a Marine whose suicide has been the subject of conspiracy theories — because it would be a “step toward establishing the truth of events such as the September 11 demolitions.”
In podcasts, Bedell propagated his conspiracy theories, which eerily reflect fringe right-wing rhetoric:
The blatant violations of the Constitution’s limitations on the economic role of the government accomplished through many subtle usurpations over many decades are perhaps even more pernicious than and are certainly a key motivation for the violent seizure of the United States government.

The Pentagon shooting is just the latest in a string of violence seemingly motivated by far right ideologies. Of course, last month, “[h]atred of the government motivated a man in Texas” to launch a suicide attack on an IRS office. And a recent Southern Poverty Law Center report found a 244 percent rise in the number of extremist hate groups. But when the Department of Homeland Security released a report last year warning about the threat from right-wing domestic terror, conservative politicians and commentators were outraged, claiming it was an assault on conservatism. Sadly, the report was right.

Yahoo and gmail have no political bent, they’re neutral. Mises is not (obviously). So yes, anyone can get a mises.org email account—-but first you have to actually be interested in the site (and libertarianism) to even come across it.

I seriously doubt this guy was on his lithium when he actually went to the pentagon. Also the guy should have been legally barred from purchasing a firearm due to his diagnosed mental illness. Whenever you have first contact with the mental heal system(usually by a “5150″ – or 3-day hold) paperwork is filled out and sent to the department of justice.
This diagnosed mentally ill guy did not have LEGAL access to firearms…but the system broke down somewhere.
By the way if this article was leaving out the mental illness fact on purpose, shame on you for EXPLOITING a mentally ill person for political gain. Luckily 99 percent of the media is reporting he had a mental illness..
Even the San Francisco media is reporting he had a mental illness and is not taking this guy’s mentally ill ramblings seriously in the respect he was some kind of rational person.

Well, which is it, jw? UCSF isn’t the same thing as UCB. Berkeley is over on the other side of the Bay, near Oakland; UCSF is actually distributed around SF – it isn’t just one campus. And this shooter came from Hollister, which is another place entirely (and I don’t think there is a UC campus there)and was a grad student at San Jose State, which is not part of the UC system; the Cal State system is a separate university system from the UC system.
I don’t know if his politics were left, right or center. It appears that he was bipolar, manic-depressive, so his politics probably shouldn’t enter into an analysis as a dominant driver of his behavior. Truthers don’t seem to come exclusively from one end or the other of the (so-called and alleged) left-right politcal spectrum.

My (not necessarily very well) informed guess is that the original post went up before the shooter’s mental disorder became public knowledge and Alex hasn’t bothered to update the post with that information.

We know he was sick now, but that wasn’t apparent when the article was posted. Alex, the post’s author, was quoting the Christian Science Monitor; yes, he needs to correct the error.
OTOH, sure, Bedell was mentally ill, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t scare the holy living shit out of three police officers and a couple of civilians. His intent is not clear; I suppose that it may have simply been murder, but I suspect he had a specific target in the building, probably in the office that had blown off his (not necessarily very sane) idea for some nano material weapon.

The right should not be tied to Timothy McVeigh. If a Michael Jordan fan shoots an NBA referee because MJ got ejected and lambasted the zebra in the post game press conference, do we hold MJ responsible? Every individual who commits a crime can be tied to some political party, company, or with blacks, whites, Muslims, Christians, or anything else. The possibilities are endless. By these standards we all need to be considered dangerous. Rather than debate the issues, these tactics skirt the issues which stalls any chance of progress and understanding each others’ views.
As far as the author painting Mises-Libertarians as violent, he should explore the site. It is difficult to find much, if anything, advocating violence without taking it out of context. Further, both the Republicans and Democrats have murdered far more than any Mises-Libertarians. Both parties support wars all over the world frequently resulting in the death of innocents and forcing tax payers to fund it even if they are morally opposed. The conservatives make the moral issue a part of their objection to Federal funds used for abortions. And now Obama and the left are showing Bush and the right how killing and nation building is really done. The difference between the lone Pentagon shooter and the two parties’ elected officials is that millions of you voted for Bush and/or Obama enthusiastically, especially the latter, while the shooter was not elected by anyone. And there had to be a better site you could have picked because Mises.org is a hard site to make appear violent. I imagine some will make sure they find a way since actual debate on ideology is not as easy as the copy and pasting, especially when one lacks a consistent ideology of their own.
