A Mississippi school district has canceled this year’s prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School after the Mississippi ACLU urged school officials to allow a lesbian couple to attend. Administrators turned down requests from 18-year-old Constance McMillen and her girlfriend, another student at the school, who planned on wearing a tuxedo. The school cited “distractions to the educational process caused by recent events” as reason for canceling the event, suggesting that “a private group host an independent prom instead.” McMillen, however, said the district’s decision was “retaliation” for speaking out:
“Oh, my God. That’s really messed up because the message they are sending is that if they have to let gay people go to prom that they are not going to have one,” she said. “A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this, so in a way it’s really retaliation.”
School officials told McMillen last month that she could not bring her sophomore girlfriend to the prom and could not wear a tuxedo. The school then circulated a memo prohibiting same-sex dates.
“I asked my teacher about it, and she said, ‘Well, you have to remember where you are,’” McMillen said.
In neighboring Alabama last year, the Franklin County School system in Russellville “reversed its policy prohibiting a lesbian student from attending a prom with her girlfriend.” In Utah, the Salt Lake City-based Utah Pride Center hosts a gay prom every year, but “Executive Director Valerie Larabee said districts have not enforced same-sex date prohibitions for years.” In Los Angeles United School District schools, same-sex couples are permitted to attend the prom, and one of these schools has even elected a gay male prom queen.
Hoo boy, they’re gonna get letters about this. And we’re gonna get trolls.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:01 pm“distractions to the educational process” – or distractions from reality. I guess Mississippi lives by the credo that if it’s not discussed or acknowledged, it doesn’t exist.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:02 pmThe school district, in doing this, is promoting hatred & discrimination towards gays & lesbians. It’s probably exactly why they did it.

18 year olds can legally marry (unless they are gay).
18 year olds can attend their HS prom (unless they are gay).
Hey! Let’s deny gays the right to smoke, drink, vote, drive a car, get a job, buy a house. Let’s just go all the way and die gays the right to live!!

Since when did opposition to homosexuality become the central core belief of Christianity?
It seems to have outpaced the Resurrection and the Second Coming.
It is the issue that excites the holy rollers like no other.
There really should be an evangelical habitat established somewhere in North America, to which we can deport all the holy roller crazies, and let the rest of us get on with living our lives.

March 11th, 2010 at 2:13 pm“distractions to the educational process”
At the Prom? Can someone explain what the Prom has to do with the educational process? Do they take notes and worry about a test on dance techniques?
March 11th, 2010 at 2:13 pmWhat does anyone expect from a pit that still has a CSA emblem on their state flag?
March 11th, 2010 at 2:13 pm“I asked my teacher about it, and she said, ‘Well, you have to remember where you are,’” McMillen said.
Mississippi is the most religious state in the union. It’s also one of the poorest. Apparently God doesn’t love you as much as you love Him if you’re gay and want to attend a dance.
And kind of on-topic: And for all the tea parties and whining about government “socialism”, Mississippi is also the biggest federal sponge in the country. It receives $1.70-$2.00 in federal money for every dollar it pays in taxes.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:14 pmI know my last comment may have come off as shallow, but it was more a reflection on how goofy hillbillies look than at how this woman may look in a tux. I think that if she could show up all the guys, then more power to her.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:14 pmSomeone should have to justify this.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:15 pmThe recent proposed law calling for captial punishment for gays in Uganda is the handiwork of American evangelicals such as Rick Warren and Scott Lively.
This is what these “values” voters really want – the complete and utter extermination of gay men and women.

All the local school board wants is the traditional prom, complete with abuse of alcohol and date rape.
What’s wrong with that?
March 11th, 2010 at 2:21 pmSo they think that cancelling Prom won’t disrupt the educational process of their school? The saddest and scariest part of this is the students who will blame the single couple for their loss of a long honored tradition rather than the frightened homophobes who actually made the decision.
March 11th, 2010 at 2:21 pmBizarro, those clowns hate Catholics almost as much as they hate gays, non-whites and Jews.

March 11th, 2010 at 2:24 pmGreat point lefty @23. Now there will be questions on if anyone already knew about these girls sexual orientation and if there are others etc, etc…..They’ll want to know if this was a “problem” for years, months or whatever and the school board will now be ground zero for every homophobic nutjob and for gay right activists.
They took the cowardly way out and will now be dragged over the coals for it.

Actually, there are lots of Catholics in the deep south. Hell we had fish-stick Fridays at public school back in the 1950’s and ’60’s

Talk about blaming the wrong person and adding insult to injury! McMillen isn’t the one who made the decision to cancel the prom (a decision which was in any case unjust and completely out of proportion). The other student should put the blame for this where it belongs — on the shoulders of the district administrators.
This much is certain — as Garrison Keillor once said about one of his characters, perhaps this incident will give McMillen a greater interest in geography since it’s only too clear that she’ll be a lot happier once she gets out of school and moves away from Mississippi.

A curious post, first acknowledging the backwards taliban-like attitudes of the religious right, then claiming that there is no problem with this attitude, and that everything posted here is a lie.
You got issues, son. Maybe if hearing about gay rights bothers you, you should head on back to wherever the South Park Conservatives* go, like WND or RedState or wherever.
*Not that SP is to blame, but that brand of conservative always thinks SP isn’t making fun of them either. Not true!
March 11th, 2010 at 3:53 pm@79
They’re not running the school district. And yes, if “Blacks” were behind this, they would be stupid. Not because they’re black, but because of the beliefs held.
Your “liberals are the real racists because…” doesn’t work, always hilarious from someone named after STORMFRONT of all places.

gay an dlesbian tax dollars are being used to stage proms nationwide. it’s only fair they should be allowed to attend any damn way they please
When I went to high school, there were no tax dollars used for the prom. The school would allow the use of the gym and/or send teachers to monitor the students but they really had no authority. The prom is paid for by the students. Mine was not on school premises so there were no tax dollars involved.
March 11th, 2010 at 3:59 pmThank God she wasn’t lynched,after all it’s Mississippi!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:05 pmLook at the Gov of Miss. for instance, he Gov Barbour talks like he’s got a pair of real American tea-bags caught in his throat!
Obviously ‘Footloose’ wasn’t a big hit in Mississippi.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:06 pmWhat the hell differene does it make who goes to the prom with whom?
The idea is to dance and dress up and have fun — unless the preference is to drink oneself stupid and have sex in the back seat of the car.
Lots of kids don’t even go to the prom in couples. So what?
I am so fed up with christians, racists, repugniscum and other lowlifes and their incessant persecution of people who don’t fit their very parochial and provincial description of right and wrong.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:18 pmpez is just pissed that he couldn’t bring his boy friend (his hand) to his high-school prom. Do your parents know about your relationship?

“distractions to the educational process caused by recent events”
How would a dance disrupt education? That’s only happening now that they’ve made the decision to cancel it. Nice work, hayseeds!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:20 pm@141 Maybe you should stop being such an attention-whore and attracting attention to things that aren’t your goddamned business? Seriously, you’re a shrill little whiner.
Also, gays and lesbians should have different water fountains, sit at the back of the bus, and other such separate but equality.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:22 pmpezmiztix,
Tell us more about how you are going to “slaughter obama” before the holiday season.
You threatened to kill the POTUS today. Are you ready to face the SS and FBI?
You are a worthless, honky, peckerwood stack of rusty trailer homes filled with moist cat shit.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:22 pm@144 Oh Duke, we missed you! *HUG*
You’re welcome to read up on gays as much as your gay little heart desires. Enjoy!
March 11th, 2010 at 4:23 pm@147
Link?
March 11th, 2010 at 4:24 pm“Icky up”? People use that word?
First the belief that dinosaurs and man roamed the Earth simultaneously, then this.
You’re as real as a rhinestone, Pez.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:26 pmAnd yet…you’re here almost every day, Mr. Duke.
I think you’ve got a crush on the “gay agenda” here.

Haha. I think Duke prefers pictures.
pez is an accredited expert on ‘icky’.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:29 pmdb, that was pretty much figurative from pez. All talk and no action. He couldn’t lift a pen, let alone a sword.
March 11th, 2010 at 4:30 pmMr. Duke is not into gay…heehaw…he has other interests in the barnyard…heehaw. How is your Jenny doing, Duke?
March 11th, 2010 at 4:31 pm@151 Yeah, he’s trying to smugpost it’s pretty silly to expect people to suddenly go “OH MY GOD THE TOPIC IS ABOUT GAYYYSSSS” when the person who’s looking for embarassment is a gay hanger-on. Mr. Duke’s kind of like the mascot of TP’s gay contingent, and he’s welcome to pay attention to just how boring the conversations can get.

I guess our founding fathers considered that portion of the Constitution to apply to white men and nobody else, ever.

Do you have bright orange hair, buck teeth and heavy black frame glasses, Mr. Dupe?
March 11th, 2010 at 5:00 pmWelcome to the new South — same as the old South.
Yeppers. This gay couple thing is surely distracting to the edumacational process. It certainly would be worse than the usual heterosexual cousin couples, drunken orgies and unintended pregnancies that are the usual Southern Prom traditions.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:01 pmGood for the school district.

Probably not.

March 11th, 2010 at 5:02 pmdbadass… this little gem was forwarded to me by an agency biologist today:
According to the Knight-Ridder News Service, the inscription on the metal bands used by the U.S. Department of the Interior to tag migratory birds has been changed. The bands used to bear the address of the Washington Biological Survey, abbreviated:
Wash. Biol. Surv.
Until the agency received the following letter from an Arkansas camper:
“Dear Sirs:
While camping last week I shot one of your birds. I think it was a crow. I followed the cooking instructions on the leg tag and I want to tell you it was horrible.”
March 11th, 2010 at 5:07 pmThe bands are now marked Fish and Wildlife Service.
Can’t visit the website, but here is the principal’s email address.
twiygul@itawamba.k12.ms.us
Ugh. This is disgusting.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:22 pmAnd the email for the district superintendent
tmcneece@itawamba.k12.ms.us
March 11th, 2010 at 5:24 pmThe AP reports that when McMillen returned to school today after the prom cancellation announcement, she received some “some unfriendly looks from classmates,” and one student told her, “Thanks for ruining my senior year.”
Morons will always find a way — which the school district counted on.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:32 pm“Thanks for ruining my senior year.”
If not having a prom is all it takes to ruin this students senior year, maybe she’s not ready to graduate.
March 11th, 2010 at 5:51 pmyeah I am the ignorant one. At least i am not so smug I actually believe that I cam change hundreds of years of thinking in the most southern belt state there is. You people baffle me..not one person in the entire state of Mississippi reads this trash website. Eugene Debs if you wanna be a bulldyke thats your thing. Just do it in the designated areas. fatty mcfatster.
March 11th, 2010 at 6:29 pmnoseeum, et al… says:
If not having a prom is all it takes to ruin this students senior year, maybe she’s not ready to graduate.
The simplest solution is to find another place to hold the prom. The kids don’t need the school involved to have a prom. If they did do it without the school, then the school would have no say so about the prom.
March 11th, 2010 at 6:34 pmSomeone needs to step forward and pony up the bucks for the “independent prom” for these kids and let the bigoted members of the faculty stay home and watch Hannity.
Before someone asks me to do it, I am already financing the prom for my kid’s high school in Houston. Yes, the whole thing. The school simply can’t raise the money. I’m happy to do it, even though my kid isn’t even a senior yet. But the school has good kids and a good faculty. They deserve it, and it’s been a good year.
March 11th, 2010 at 6:48 pmWhen a state, city, or school district decides to create laws, rules, or regulations that encourage — or worse, mandate — prejudice and bigotry, then one has no recourse except to challenge the legality and constitutionality of the legislation in a court of law.
To suggest that she should be vilified because the district decided to act so immaturely is inane.
Should Rosa Parks have refused to sit in the back of the bus? Had the bus driver told everyone to get off the bus and walk because of her heroic stand, would we reflect back in history and condemn her for making the white passengers suffer?
March 11th, 2010 at 7:29 pmI find it laughable at the Biblical experts here that call themselves Christians and then quote and mention Old Testament scriptures. Many of the Old Testament scriptures were directions for how the Jews could differentiate themselves from the other tribes in the Middle East. Things like kosher dietary requirements, the treatment of women and slaves and the Sabbath and sacrifices.
You Christians do know that the Old Testament is the book of the Jews and that the death of Christ created a new covenant between God and His people. If Sodom and Gomorra was destroyed because of homosexuality, why wasn’t Athens, Sparta, Alexandria or Rome destroyed; they all had homosexuality as part of the society. Also Jesus Christ NEVER, NEVER said anything about homosexuality, homosexuality was a part of life in the Ancient World so you would think that the founder of Christianity would have said something, anything about the evils of homosexuality.
As for being unnatural, homosexuality occurs in nature regularly; apes, monkeys, dogs and other wild animals engage in homosexual acts. There is more and more scientific evidence that people who are gay are born that way; which means that God wants them to be gay. But Christians don’t care about science and the progression of the human race; the list is so very long– the earth is the center of the Universe, Evolution, the practice of Chemistry being demonized as witchcraft and the study of Human Anatomy having to being done in secret.

March 11th, 2010 at 8:10 pm—
Is there a reason you are pretending that this is the only source which has noted this event? I already told you that it was up on Yahoo hours before here. How many folks do you think see Yahoo news? Would you like to make a wager on how this plays out? Oh and do you know any sincere articulate conservatives by any chance. I am working on a collaborative project and am having a difficult time finding the folks I need to make it work. Thanks-
175. dbadass – there are currently over 45,000 comments on this story at Yahoo news. So I think that fact alone makes your point.

God got too busy with the adulterers and forgot about those cities. In fact, God has still got his hands full with the adulterers. Thank goodness, God doesn’t send hellfire and brimstone because there would be a lot of empty red states.
March 11th, 2010 at 8:50 pmreceived some “some unfriendly looks from classmates,” and one student told her, “Thanks for ruining my senior year.”
And yet somehow, I suspect MsMcMillan would be seen as being a b*tch unless she spends her time at school smiling and being cooperative to the point of being subservient.
It is perfectly OK for her to have to sit there and listen to all the talk about the glamor of the prom. Every single minute of her high school existence. And she had better smile and giggle.
And althought the percentage of the population which is homosexual may be in doubt, reasonable estimates imply that 10 to 20 % of the students in the school had better do likewise. OR ELSE !
March 11th, 2010 at 9:53 pmI should have added, that I would naturally tend to be “anti-gay” but events such as this are a large part of what convinces me that we need “gay rights.”
March 11th, 2010 at 9:55 pmLooks like the ACLU made the mistake of thinking people aren’t crazy as crack house rats in Ol Miss.
I hope the girls parents can afford a bulletproof vest for her ’cause she’s going to need it.
March 11th, 2010 at 10:15 pm@170 If
of all places can allow legal gay marriage, I’m going to assume that the rest of the state isn’t as inbred as your kin, and that stories like these are going to crop up more often, then disappear. Again, as happened with the irish, blacks, women, any other group you hate.
March 11th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
@180
What does that even mean?
March 11th, 2010 at 11:00 pm“Distraction to the educational process”?! WTF is that supposed to mean? I don’t remember going to the prom to be a part of an “educational process,” it was about seeing if you could get the person you wanted to go with, to go with you. And bringing in Bacardi’s 151 to share with your bros, making out with the person you came with (or someone else, if things didn’t work out), dancing, and avoiding the monitors. Stuff like that.
Seriously, that’s such an immature reaction on the school’s part. They’re supposed to be educators? What a bunch of babies!
March 11th, 2010 at 11:26 pmI think Connie’s gown would require less fabric than a suit for Rush Limbaugh, Bill Bennett or Dick Cheney.
