On Monday, Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly joined Jay Leno for an interview on The Tonight Show. Leno began by asking O’Reilly about his feelings on Lieutenant Dan Choi, who was dismissed from the National Guard in June because he came out as a gay man on national television. Under the military’s Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT) policy, openly gay men and women cannot serve in the armed forces. O’Reilly made his feelings clear:
LENO: I don’t know if you heard the thing I was mentioning, it actually made me angry. That kid, the West Point kid [Dan Choi], what’s your take on that?
O’REILLY: Well I don’t get it. President Obama has the power to stop this Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell business. Just sign an executive order. I don’t know why it’s taking so long.
LENO: And to me, doesn’t it cost like $300,000 to send a kid to West Point? He speaks Arabic…Anybody that’s willing to take a bullet for me is OK in my book.
O’REILLY: Yeah, but $300,000 to the government – that’s like $0.30, you know what I mean? So, they don’t care about cost. But, look, it’s just not fair, we should stop this nonsense.
Watch it:
O’Reilly, who seemed to be comfortable with continuing DADT in February, appears to have opened his mind on the issue just as large numbers of military officers and veterans have come out against the policy. As Dan Savage points out, O’Reilly’s new position places him “to the left of President Obama on DADT.” Obama, who campaigned on ending DADT, could issue an executive order suspending DADT anytime. (HT: Balloon Juice)
Is this billo the nazi’s way of doing what he can to keep DADT going?
July 28th, 2010 at 2:02 pmI’d look this gift horse in the mouth, but it does show it is getting more and more mainstream. Common sense is slowly easing to the surface…
July 28th, 2010 at 2:04 pm. But, look, it’s just not fair, we should stop this nonsense.
gee bill you might want your channel to heat this as well.
or you apologizes for your part in the Sharrod case now this.
whats up?????? or whzzsup
July 28th, 2010 at 2:04 pmWhy didn’t this pervert feel the same way when Bush the Boy Blunder was in office for 8 godawful years ?
July 28th, 2010 at 2:05 pmDon’t worry. It’s still an attack on Obama. Bill’s accusing him of dragging this out.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:05 pmDADT is a sterling example of the pernicious influence of unproven religious dogma on public policy in this nation.
If you wish to believe that stuff, do it on your own dime, and don’t force the taxpayers to fund fairy tales.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:05 pmFuxNews is run by corporate sharks who are aware of the major change occurring in the culture.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:06 pm…appears to have opened his mind on the issue…
Yes – appears.
It’s called pandering to the audience, so they didn’t start throwing shit at him.
O’Rielly’s a flaming ahole, but he ain’t stupid.
Well, completely stupid.
Aw, f*** it. I’m digging myself in deep here…….better shut up now.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:07 pm.
I said Obama should pen an Executive Order when he was sworn in…
.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:07 pmIt’s just bizarre when the wingnut bobbleheads flip like this. It makes you wonder how they decide what their opinions will be tomorrow. Magic 8 ball?
July 28th, 2010 at 2:08 pm$300,000? How about 25 million for an 18 year veteran…
Decorated fighter pilot fought DADT discharge hoping Obama would end the policy. Who estimates that the U.S. military spent roughly $25 million training him.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:09 pmMost of the opposition to the repeal of DADT comes from holy roller con men and repiggie congress critters, hardly any of whom have ever even served in the military
July 28th, 2010 at 2:11 pmIs it possible that O’Reilly is so focused on knee-jerk opposition to anything President Obama does that he forgot his talking points?
July 28th, 2010 at 2:14 pmLook for the evangelical homoerotic fantasy machine to go into warp drive over this issue.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:15 pm“I’d look this gift horse in the mouth”
I’d line up eerything billo has said about dadt for the last four years and see if their is a shift or if he gets quiet about it for a long period of time.
If neither has taken place I’d consider shooting that “gift” horse.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:16 pmBildo must have gotten drunk in the Green Room. Roger and Rupert aren’t going to be happy with him.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:17 pmCould make a case that the ol’ boy is seeing how the wind is blowing, overall, and maybe trying to shift his positions to fit it… Tiger changing stripes, etc…
Shows the actual strength of his convictions…
July 28th, 2010 at 2:17 pmO’Reilly: Obama should ‘sign the executive order’ ending DADT, ‘it’s just not fair, we should stop this nonsense.’
– - The conundrum that is Bill O’Reilly. Right now, this makes Bill-O more pro-gay than Mr. Obama.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:18 pmNow I know why our area is getting major thunderstorms today.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:19 pmHas O’LIEly finally seen the light? Nah, he knows the American people have moved on. They don’t really care if gays join or are in the Military. Young people find their elders intolerance baffling.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:19 pmWow! I’m interested to see how the right wing blogoshpere will react to this. They are often so 100% with us or 100% against us, it will be interesting to see how long it takes them to toss O’Reilly under the bus.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:20 pm… playin’ to the audience, that’s all.
he’s still a lying hypocrite.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:21 pm@19

your enablers/handlers/masters have not given you the talking points?
LOL

July 28th, 2010 at 2:25 pmWell, I’ll give Bildo this one — even though he couched it as an attack on the President.
How long until he claims his words were taken out of context?

That’s exactly it. Wingnuts will take any opportunity they can to criticize Obama, even if that means flip-flopping on the supposedly “cherished beliefs” that they’re always yammering on about.
See the trolls complaining about Gitmo for another example.
If O’Reilly actually believes what he said, I look for him to do more anti-DADT pieces on his show in the future. I’ll be waiting over here…

July 28th, 2010 at 2:29 pmEvangelical preachers should start writing scripts for gay porn films.
There are few others with such incredibly active and intense sexual fantasies involving two or more men doing the wham-slam.

There. I said it..

I remember when Klayman advocated for disbarring and later impeachment of Clarence Thomas, John Roberts, and Samuel Alito.
Oh wait…

“blood thirsty vampire”
thinking one is rapped up into twilight movies to much.
last i look not many real live vampires around. guess once you go to that fantasist land its hard to get back to reality.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:32 pmI would be extremely cautious about this. First off, O’Rally made these statements on the Tonight Show which is not exactly the target audience for Faux Newz (most sufferers of dementia are asleep by 10pm).
Second, I do recall him agreeing with Rosie O’Donnell about allowing gays to adopt, only to have him make homophobic responses years later (remember when he claimed that the abducted child most likely enjoyed his sexual torture).
I just ain’t buying it.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:34 pmGee, that’s noble of the Falafel King to suggest that Obama sign an executive order to end DADT. And if Obama did that, all hell would break loose and Obama would be called a dictator by the wingnuts and Fox News. Certainly, there would be calls for impeachment and blame Obama for not following the Constitution. We all know that the DADT bill has been stalled in the Senate. Nice try BillO. Not buying your beans.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:35 pmIf President Obama dismissed DADT with an executive order? Bill0 would be crying about “shoving it down our throat” and Becky would be telling his worshipers to grab their guns.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:40 pmThis isn’t surprising. It is just more of the same tactic of damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t. Just like the BP ’shakedown’. First it was horrible Chicago thug tactics and then he was stupid for not getting cash up front when they started to renege.
Republicans, baggers and Faux media dorks could all use a mega dose of Imodium because they just keep shitting themselves over everything.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:44 pmCongress and the President mandated by law that the military would racially integrate.
Congress and the President mandated by law that the military would allow women to serve.
Congress and the President should mandated by law that the military will no longer discriminate against gay people, and allow them to serve openly.
Our military currently serves alongside openly gay service members from other countries with no problems!
It only seems to be the anti-gay folk who don’t think our military is sufficiently professional or mature enough to serve with openly gay people.
Wonder why these anti-gay folk have such a low opinion of our service members?

If Obama used Chicago thug tactics, there would be a lot of Republicans who mysteriously disappeared never to be hear from again, and the others would have broken kneecaps.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:48 pmThe silence of the “libertarians” on this issue is deafening.
Most of the “libertarians” these days are just a bunch of fakes and phonies.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:48 pmI’m suspicious that being anti-repeal dadt has lost its ability to blame Obama.
Being oblivious that it is a law and needs Congressional action is just a way to be able to keep blaming the melanotic one.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:52 pm5:1 odds Billdo retracts this statement on his show tonight.
Trolls disgust me. ADHD trolls like oldhooker are some of the worst.
It’s attention span is so short, it couldn’t carry a thought for more that 15 seconds with a forklift.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:55 pmThere seems to be two types of Righties these days. The lunatic fringe who are obsessively consistent about weird things like birferism and taking our guns and such.
Then there are the more subtle Rovian clones who are willing to say or do just about anything in an attempt to provoke and inappropriate response from the President or someone in the administration. Bildo is in this group. To them it is all about provocation. Consistency means nothing. They want that sound bite. Like Acorn and Sherrod.
Of the 2, the provacateers are much more dangerous. The first bunch are just nuts.
July 28th, 2010 at 2:57 pmOT:

July 28th, 2010 at 3:00 pmDemocrat Soldier says:
Wonder why these anti-gay folk have such a low opinion of our service members?

I’ve wondered about that myself: Do anti-gay fundies hate vets or do they childishly worship them like super heroes? It’s hard to tell sometimes. On one hand they figure you’re killing brown people and that makes you a “Real American”, a fulfillment of their genocidal fantasies. On the other hand they think homosexuality or any kind of “weakness” including gender, race, or actual injuries etc. in combat means you should be left to die. It’s not fun worshiping gross people with limbs missing or if they’re “different.” I guess living one lie makes it easier to live them all but harder to face reality.
And I’m sorry but I have serious problems taking anything O’Reilly says seriously. DADT should be repealed but the right’s just using playing politics with this now, and Bill will flip-flop any day on this. After all, he’s made plenty of homophobic comments in the past.
July 28th, 2010 at 3:00 pmummm, if they were Republic women, about 25 million…
I don’t think inflatable and bionic mean the same thing. ;)
July 28th, 2010 at 3:03 pmJust guessing that O’Reilly is close to someone gay or he’s close to someone in the military who’s gay.
This is uncharacteristic of O’Reilly to say the right thing. I’m sure he’ll make up for it soon.
July 28th, 2010 at 3:03 pmOh gross slimey jerk John Stossel is involved.

So, what you’re saying is that you support the repeal of DADT.
How. . . . Progressive of you!
July 28th, 2010 at 3:16 pmDo any of these people understand that while it would be nice if the President could just sign an executive order, he can’t do that? Have they forgotten that it’s a law that was voted on by Congress and signed by Bill Clinton into law? This is why an executive order will NOT do! It will have to be voted on to change it. My only problem is Reid waiting for this stupid study. They’ve already polled the military and the American people and support is overwhelming for getting rid of it. O’Reilly and even some of the American people only prove their ignorance by asking the President to sign something OUT of law.
July 28th, 2010 at 3:35 pmGood for O’Reilly, but it doesn’t mean he’s anything but a fairweather friend.
He says reasonable things every now and then, but he doesn’t really grasp the bigger picture.
It’s also easier to argue with Obama than agree with him on any reasonable issue as well.
July 28th, 2010 at 3:38 pmI don’t care what O’Reilly says. He is still an a$$hole. He probably doesn’t mean it anyways. Just sees it as another way to look like he is disagreeing with Obama.

I mean, they already wear the perfect outfits for it anyways.

July 29th, 2010 at 8:19 amSo far, only one person has pointed out that O’Reilly is a stupid as he is ignorant. While it is true that DADT should be done away with, that can’t be accomplished by an executive order. DADT is statutory law (10 USC § 654) and can’t be overturned by an executive order. It has to be repealed by Congress. While Congress can override an executive order with legislation, the President can’t overturn legislation with an executive order.
