Right-Wing Group Launches ‘Anti-Islamic’ Bus Ads in Major Cities
In May, the American Society for Muslim Advancement (ASMA) and the Cordoba Initiative proposed plans to build a community center two blocks away from Ground Zero in New York City that would include “a mosque, performance art center, gym, swimming pool and other public spaces.” Since then, radical conservatives across the country have expressed open hostility to the construction of Muslim places of worship. Speaking about the Muslim center in New York City, right-wing radio host Michael Berry stated, “If you do build a mosque, I hope somebody blows it up.”
Self-described “anti-jihadist” and conservative blogger Pamela Geller — the executive director of Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) — has joined the chorus of right-wing paranoia. Earlier this month on MSNBC, Geller suggested the Islamic center is a “triumphal mosque” on “conquered lands.” Now her organization has recently launched a series of bus ads reading, “Fatwa on your head? Is your family or community threatening you? Leaving Islam? Got questions? Get answers!” in major cities, including San Francisco, Miami, and New York:
RefugeFromIslam.com, the website promoted on Geller’s ads, contends that Muslim Americans who “long to be free” of their religion are in danger of being killed, and offers protection, including “safe houses,” for those who want out. Muslim rights groups and religious leaders say there is no penalty for leaving Islam and that the Koran condemns killing as a sin.
While Geller claims that the bus campaign’s goal is “to help ex-Muslims who are in trouble,” several religious rights organizations have criticized Geller for inciting fear about a religion that is already misunderstood. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights organization that has voiced concerns over several of these bus ads, especially because it seems to imply the false claim that Muslims who choose to leave Islam are in danger. Furthermore, SIOA’s hateful rhetoric has reached as far as the FBI and Virginia’s Tidewater Joint Terrorism Task Force, which invited the group’s co-founder and founder of right-wing blog Jihad Watch, Robert Spencer, to offer training to state and federal law enforcement officers.
The U.S. government has refused the group’s request for a trademark designation for its name, stating, “The applied-for mark refers to Muslims in a disparaging manner because by definition it implies that conversion or conformity to Islam is something that needs to be stopped or caused to cease.”

Humans always try to make the facts support their beliefs, but being strictly religious makes it easy to be intellectually lazy, and it’s easier to protect your poorly formed, inconsistent ideas when you call them your religion than when you say “Well, I’ve just never thought about it.” Homosexuality and tolerance of other faiths for example. Al Qaeda, sheltered by the Taliban, launched an attack against the United States from Afghanistan in 2001. Perhaps you heard of it? Meh, you’ve probably forgotten since 9/11 is no longer useful to you as a political club to beat people with.
There was no reason to go to war with Iraq. There was every reason to go to war with Afghanistan. In fact, nearly every country the world over supported our invasion of Afghanistan. The fact that it was then left to simmer in failure during the entire remainder of Bush’s term while he focused on Iraq leaves us in the position of having to do what he should have done way back then: put enough boots on the ground to get actually the job done.
We spent the entirety of Bush’s term trying to explain to you that Iraq is not Afghanistan. This is something you seem incapable of understanding even when I shove your ugly face into a map and rub it around until there’s ink all over your hideous visage. Now we have to keep spending all this time explaining to you that Afghanistan is not Iraq? You’re just too f**king stupid to even have an opinion about politics, much less open your drooling yap to share it with your betters here.

First, I read that bigotry against American Muslims is justified because THE MALDIVES (!!!), a country with less than half a million people, doesn’t permit religious freedom. Which, naturally, supports their argument that Muslims here in the United States are imprisoned by their religion. All Muslims here are subject to what goes on in an itty bitty republic literally half way around the world — one with no special military, economic, or political power.
Second, they are trying to pin the Vietnam War on the DEMOCRATS (!!!), because Lyndon Johnson, who escalated it, was a Democrat.
Ah yes — I remember all the Republicans who marched in opposition to that war. Oh wait — they didn’t? Republicans were more likely to yell “commie-lover” at those who did?
OK then, I remember how Barry Goldwater (Johnson’s 1964 opponent) campaigned on a promise to withdraw all U.S. troops from Vietnam. What — he didn’t? In fact, he proposed aggressive measures that even appalled Johnson?
OK, how about this — the Democratic Party in this country was so in love with the way LBJ handled the Vietnam War that his nomination for another term was a foregone conclusion and he won another term in November by a landslide. Oh really? — he dropped out of the primary and chose not to run again because the Vietnam War had cost him the support of Democrats everywhere?
If we have to have trolls here, can we at least get a better grade of them? These don’t even TRY to learn history.
