As Tennesseans Desperately Search For Work, Wamp Suggests Unemployed Are ‘Just Sitting Back Waiting’

repwamp This past Tuesday, Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN), who is also a leading candidate for the GOP nomination for governor, joined a conference call with the right-wing National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB). When the subject of extending unemployment benefits arose, Wamp complained that giving people unemployment insurance was “creating a culture of dependence which we do not need.” He then said that he wants “people out there scraping and clawing and looking for work and not just sitting back waiting”:

Wamp [...] said small business, the NFIB and he as governor “must resist… any more mandates to small business to help the unemployed — that we have continued to extend on a federal level, I think, unemployment compensation so long that there’s disincentives for people to actually re-enter the workforce or go out and look for a job.

“And this is creating a culture of dependence which we do not need. We want people out there scraping and clawing and looking for work and not just sitting back waiting. And so we’ve got to not allow any more mandates.”

Of course, the promise of a meager unemployment check that provides barely enough support to get by does not have Tennesseans “just sitting back waiting,” and it is offensive for Wamp to paint all the unemployed with such a broad brush. Throughout the recession, people from across the Republican congressman’s state have desperately sought work, going to any lengths to get employed again:

– Lori Hillard, an Ashland City native, was laid off a year ago from her job as an Internet program administrator. She began “stressing out and losing sleep” at the thought of losing her unemployment benefits, which were her only source of income. Yet she sends out “sends out at least 15 to 20 resumes per week,” desperately trying to find work. “I know how hard and diligent I have been in searching for a job,” she told a local paper. “The economic situation is just as bad for us. When 400 people are applying for an administrative assistant’s job, that shows how dire the situation is.”

– Kim Stokes of Hendersonville-based Stokes Production Services Inc. tells the Tennessean that she has so many applicants that she can’t even come close to hiring them all. “I have freelancers calling me constantly because they don’t have anything going on,” Stokes said. “Everywhere I look, people don’t have work — people like some of my friends who are older and have been let go. They’ve never been without work before in their lives.”

– Ellen Zinkiewicz, who is the director youth and community services at the Nashville Career Advancement Center, notes that “nearly three-quarters of teenagers who want a job haven’t been able to find one.”

– When Fontanel Mansion at White Creek Pines needed staff and held a job fair this spring, 1,200 people showed up to apply — six times what the business had capacity for.

This past April, hundreds of Tennesseans lined up outside the Lewisburg Recreational Center in Marshall County, Tennessee for a job fair to try to find work. “I’ve been everywhere looking. I’ve been to every temporary agent, trying to find a job. There’s no jobs,” Connie Rogers told a reporter at the fair. Thankfully, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (the “stimulus”), which Wamp opposed while hypocritically touting its benefits, helped create many of the jobs at the fair. Watch a report about the Marshall County job fair from Tennessee’s Department of Human Services:

Tennesseans who are on unemployment benefits are not “just sitting around waiting” for the next unemployment check. They are desperately seeking work so that they can make a decent living for themselves and their families. Tennessee currently has a 10.1 percent unemployment rate, and people who have no other means to get by need unemployment insurance to survive. By attacking the job-seeking unemployed of his state, Wamp is insulting those who are doing everything they can to put food on the table, while simultaneously working against them by trying to deny them unemployment benefits.

Update Greg Sargent identifies other Republicans who agree with Wamp’s perspective, calling them the "Let Them Eat Want Ads" Caucus.

The solution is simple and it is TAX REFORM!!!!

If a company has more than 50 employees anywhere in its corporate spiderweb (ie loan out corp, off shore subsidiary, supplier), then only give tax breaks to employees wages between $50,000 & $75,000. Anything above or below that is an unrecoverable business expense. For all companies, allow the Owner (or share holders) to take low tax dividends from the post-tax profits = to the % of CEO salary that the lowest earner in the company (or contracted company working for the company (ie out sourced worker) takes home. The bigger the gap between CEO and employee, the lower the bonuses for owners.

Only when the big corporations are forced to decide between giving money to the gov’t or their workers will they give it to their workers…

My wish for every single one of these yahoos who believe that the unemployed are “lazy”, “waiting”, “choose to be unemployed”, or have “unpleasant personalities” and/or “don’t know how to do a day’s work” could stand in the shoes of the unemployed.

Let’s see how they react to spending every day poring over the want ads, networking with everybody they have ever known in their lives, even trying to sell employers on the idea of creating a position that matches their skills and how it would benefit the employer.

Let’s see how they feel about sending out 20 resumes (all with carefully worded cover letters tailored to a specific prospective employer) every day and never getting any callbacks or any reaction at all. And when they call to follow up anywhere, they are told that they received 500 applications for a single position.

Let’s see how they manage to rebudget their lives on $300 a week, knowing that if they are VERY careful, they can keep the bank from foreclosing on their home, and they can eat if they clip coupons and shop sales, but replacing worn clothing is out of the question. Entertainment? Travel? Ha! Oh, and they’ll need to keep their fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong with the car or any major appliance.

Let’s see what they say when they start looking at openings in areas that don’t fit their skill set at all, and represent a significant cut in pay from their last job, because getting an entry-level job somewhere and reinventing oneself is better than nothing.

Let’s see how they feel when week after week after week of this existence starts eating away at their souls, their pride, and their will to live. Let’s see what it does to them as they watch the ticking clock — worrying about what they’ll do when their unemployment benefits and their COBRA run out.

I doubt any of these pompous asses would make the same declarations if they had ever walked in the shoes of the unemployed.

    ____________________________________________________________

You’re absolutely right. However, startup money is only one factor in business success — although a significant one.

It’s also harder to start a business in an economy where nobody has any money to spend. Businesses — particularly small ones — have been hard hit (and we’re talking established businesses, not just new ones).

And not everyone has business skills. We need to quit thinking that “if people really wanted to make a living, they can always start their own business.” Not everybody has that skill set, just as not every woman has the skill set to be a prostitute. Not having a particular skill set doesn’t necessarily mean that a person has no value in our society.

A mid-week visit to your middle TN libraries, where people frequently gather to job train, job search, and update their resumes with the help of public library resources will show you that. A browsing of the people who have gone as far to resort to advertising that they are looking for work in the classifieds and the Nashville area Craigslist will show you that as well. Or, perhaps you could actually talk to and get to know your unemployed constituents. Maybe then, some of the things that come out of your mouth on this issue won’t be as idiotic.

  62. Bad Eye says:

Saw an ad on TV the other day in which Wamp spends the entire spot attacking Haslam instead of telling the voters what he plans to do as governor. Par for the course.

As for jobs in TN and my experience, several years ago when I was unemployed I applied for a temp position with a local medical organization; the job would last for less than a year and would entail scanning medical records. I was a cinch for the job, having extensive experience with computers and with scanning, in addition to a Computer Science degree (which was overkill, I guess, but still…). A few days after applying, I called the company to follow up with HR to confirm they received my application. I was told by the lady who answered that she wasn’t sure when they’d be hiring because they’d received over 200 applications for the position and it was going to take a while to go through all them. I didn’t get the job.

I also applied for a position with a local bank, via the Internet, and a few days later received a letter in the mail thanking me for my interest in the position. The letter also advised me to not contact them regarding the position, and if I was not selected then they wouldn’t be following up with me. I didn’t get that job, either.

And then there was the job I applied for in a town about 45 minutes away. They did not have an online application procedure, so I had to do it the old fashioned way and print out my resume and cover letter and snail mail it to the company. The ad in the newspaper said to not call the company and to not come by their offices in regards to the job opening. Hell…I couldn’t even call to make sure they received my resume; for all I know, the post office may have lost it (while in college in 1985 my girlfriend sent me many letters, which generally took 2-3 days to arrive. One letter she sent didn’t arrive for 3 months and had postmarks from 3 states). Yep…strike 3.

I had also applied for a couple of positions with a local company that employs several thousand people and has been here since the early 1900s. Both my parents worked there and retired after 30 years of service, and they had excellent work histories. Did I get any of the jobs? Nope. Not even a single interview.

Finally, I applied for a position with a local credit union for a customer service job; I’d had 13 years of experience in that field and felt good about my prospects. The hiring was being conducted via a temp employment agency. So I get an interview, which went very well. They said I’d be notified in 5 days. 5 days later, and nothing. So I called and asked if I got the job, and was told “yeah…they are going to start training in a couple of weeks.” I said, “hey, that is great to know that I have a job” and that waiting a week or so for training would be no problem, and I also told her that I was going to call my friends and family to tell them the good news! So a few weeks go by and no call. I called again, and was told that they decided to hire someone else. WTF? The lady denied ever telling me that I had gotten the job.

And guess what, Zack Wamp? During 10 months of unemployment I never took any of your precious unemployment compensation that you now want to deny to others, nor did I mooch off the government and get food stamps. Luckily I had family members who stepped in and helped. Oh…and I had a wife and 4 year old daughter to take care of, so even if I had of filed for and received unemployment, I wouldn’t have laid around on my lazy ass watching TV and counting my reduced income.

  63. Deschanel says:

    Deschanel says:

How does a party with this line and philosophy ever get votes?

Simple. They create a national emergency crisis, then call for everyone (except their own privileged spawn) to fall in line in the Great Patriotic War, then their privileged spawn short-sheet the beds of the soldiers and workers while they are off fighting.

Or, they just tell everyone that the evil Black Man in their White House is a Communist, a Socialist, a Nazi, and an illegal alien to boot.

  81. blogbob says:

    Politics Moron says:

…and he [Wamp] opposes 37 months of unfunded unemployment benefits.

But he SUUURRRE favors unfunded tax cuts for the billyunaires, dosen’t he?

…the first of MANY Dems that are going to get investigated and disciplined.

Who are the other ones, and what did they do? Oh wait, I forgot: you don’t care.

Did you notice it’s Dems disciplining Rangel? Of course not, doesn’t fit your script.

  84. ElBruce says:

    motomark says:

I guess you’re too busy to actually READ the article I linked you to…

I’m perfectly familiar with it. There are no “names” to “name,” as nobody else is involved in any of these charges, nor does the article suggest such.

Yet again, this situation demonstrates that when a Democrat misbehaves Democrats make sure he or she is punished. Alternately, when a Republican misbehaves, Republicans sweep it under the rug and then promote him or her to even higher leadership positions.

  86. just the bleepn facts says:

MizzD!kkkless, maybe it’s time for you to get the serious medical help you so desperately need. Just remember, Obamacare, cares about your lack of treatment for mental illness…

  87. just the bleepn facts says:

Funny how mototard thinks Obama shouldn’t get the same treatment as president as Bush did. What’s wrong mototard, can’t stand a black man to be treated the same as a white man doing the same job? Wow, you’re one pathetic, hateful little racist sh!tbag aren’t you princess?

  88. just the bleepn facts says:

Hey mototard, if Obama didn’t receive so many death threats from so many right wing extremists like yourself maybe his secret service would cut back on their security practices? ;)

  89. just the bleepn facts says:

President Bush’s Travel Entourage. 250 secret service agents, 150 national security advisors, 200 other representatives from the executive branch, 50 aids, 15 dog sniffer teams, and 5 cooks. The president’s entourage traveled in 3 large jets, plus the extra helicopters used as decoys.

What, you say mototard is doing what the right wing media do? Obama’s entourage is 30% smaller than Bush’s was but they whine about Obama as though he’s “king”? Why’s that? Presidential envy? Or just good old racism… I say the latter, don’t you mototard? ;)

  90. Mr.Duke says:

    “Let Them Eat Want Ads”

Can you buy Want Ads with Food Stamps? Just wondering.

  91. just the bleepn facts says:

MizzD!kkkless, you can buy medication for mental illness, please go ask your doctor which prescriptions you should be on. Now!

  92. Mr.Duke says:

What is the protein, fat, carb breakdown for “Want Ads”? How many calories per page? … Watch out the liberal food police will not allow you to overeat “Want Ads”.

Yep, thats the good old bully pulpit routine again. So the unemployed are waiting around? You bet you ass I’m waiting! After working for the same company for 31 years, with an ending wage of $19.63 an hour and paid benefits, I figure I would have to work three full time minimum wage jobs to break even. Oh and by the way, the company closed it’s doors. I hear this and I just want to scream! F**k YOU!

I think all those “dependent” Tennesseans should call Wamp’s office on a daily basis and/or dress up for job interviews with stacks of resumes and set up camp with protest signs outside his door. Suggested slogans: “Will work for food,” “Wamp is wrong; I want to work,” “Hire me now, please,” “I am scraping and clawing for work; who’s Wamp?”

  105. republicanSScareme says:

Aren’t rich thugs on steroids lovable? Please leave the 19th hole and get yourself some morals, Mr. Wamp. Did you know that the criminal rich are on the endangered species list?

  106. Pete Bogs says:

Unemployment checks are not good money. You can’t get rich and fat on them; if you’re lucky, you can just get by. Wamp is ign’ant.

  107. radhika says:

Wamp wants humans to go back to “scraping and clawing”….isn’t that desperate condition what a social contract was supposed to transcend.

And, of course, while WE scrape and claw, the political class lives high on the spoils of past elections.

  108. Jaxy says:

Considering that this drivel spews from the yap of a “christian” who lived in a notorious whorehouse masquerading as a “Church”, I am inclined to disbelieve every word that Wamp says.

What the heck would this t00l do if he became TN Guv.? Exercise those trusty ‘Second Amendment remedies’ against all the chronically unemployed?

  109. Fontsdeleon says:

Just your atypical right-wing Christian nutjob. Always making blanket judgements on people he can’t possibly know. He’s dependent on bribes from corporations and the financial industry. Take his bribes away and watch him claw and strain.

We unemployed here in the United States wish to make a public plea for any country owing America monies.
America can not find the money to pay it’s unemployed.

Some have been looking for work for over 99 weeks.
Benefits only last 99 weeks, then they stop.

Leaving many homeless, without utilities, hungry children living in tents, to suicides.

America needs help, can YOU extend a helping hand to us?

Our politicians have taken a vacation until September.

Leaving thousands without a lifeline, and 50,000 in America joining us each day.
We need help—–yet our representatives have left town.

We gave THEM 99 weeks to fix the problem-they have failed miserably.
They are now going on vacation. Please help.
