Pastor Hosting ‘International Burn A Quran Day’: ‘We Have Nothing Against Muslims’

On September 11, 2010, the extremist evangelical Dove World Church — whose pastor, Terry Jones, has written a book called “Islam Is Of The Devil” — plans to host “International Burn A Quran Day,” when it will burn Muslims’ sacred text and encourage others across the world to do so as well. Churchmember Wayne Sapp has even posted an instructional video that explains how and why to burn the Islamic text.

CNN host Rick Sanchez invited Jones on his show yesterday to ask him about the inflammatory action. When Sanchez pressed Jones about why he would try to anger the world’s Muslims by burning their sacred text, the evangelical pastor replied, “Well, for one thing, to us, the book is not sacred,” provoking laughter from the CNN host.

Jones later went on to explain, “What we are also doing by the burning of the Quran, we’re saying stop, stop to Islam, stop to Islamic law, stop to brutality. We have nothing against Muslims, they are welcome in our country.” When Sanchez asked him how he would feel if Muslims burned the Bible, Jones admitted he wouldn’t like it but emphasized that it was his “right” to burn the Islamic text because “we live in America”:

SANCHEZ: Do you know how many Muslims there are in the world?

JONES: I think there are 1.5 billion.

SANCHEZ: Yeah. I ask you that because that’s a very big number. Why would you want to do this to 1.5 billion people by burning their most sacred book? That’s crazy.

JONES: Well, for one thing, to us, the book is not sacred.

SANCHEZ: But it is to them, it’s sacred to them. [...]

JONES: What we’re also doing by the burning of the Quran on 9/11 is we’re saying stop. Stop to Islam. Stop to Islamic law. Stop to brutality. We have nothing against Muslims, they are welcome in our country. [...]

SANCHEZ: How would you feel if a Muslim said to you, what you just said to them? I have no problem with you Mr. Christian, you’re welcome in my country, but I’m burning your Bible.

JONES: I would not like it. But it’s our right. We live in America!

Watch it:

The National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), the nation’s largest body of evangelicals, put out a statement yesterday condemning Dove World’s actions. Quoting Thessalonians, NAE President Leith Anderson invoked the Bible’s teachings that Christians should “always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else.”

The Dove World Church has made a name for itself by engaging in a host of attention-seeking tactics to preach their hate. In the past, the congregation compelled children to wear t-shirts that bore the slogan “Islam is of the devil.” Earlier this year, they held an unsuccessful campaign to stop the election of Gainesville’s first openly gay mayor by posting a “No homo mayor” sign. Despite their failure to stop the mayor’s election, they plan to hold a protest on the steps of City Hall in August.

    From Dove World Church’s website:

    About Us

Our purpose and our goal here at Dove World Outreach Center is to get people to stand up. We, as the church, need to stand up for righteousness and for the truth of the Bible. That truth is not only love, healing and prosperity, but it is also about getting up. It is not about being entertained on Sunday morning, but about being equipped to do the work of the service: motivating, equipping to get up, organize, and show the world that there is a true and living church.

Any religion which would profess anything other than this truth is of the devil. This is why we also take a stand against Islam, which teaches that Jesus is not the Son of God, therefore taking away the saving power of Jesus Christ and leading people straight to Hell.

So what these idiots are saying is Jesus Christ and all other Jews are of the Devil because they were/are Jewish?

    bitblt says:
Oh BTW, aren’t the communist officially guided by an atheistic ideology?

Some are, some are not. This question cannot be answered in a more complete way. It has no common context. It would be like asking, are janitors atheists, or are grocery clerks atheists? Or, even, what does blue taste like? There is no commonality for either concept beyond their mutual existence in the world. Communism is an economic (and political) perspective. Atheism deals directly with theology, namely the belief that there is no empirical evidence for God. While Leninist/Stalinist/Maoist communism typically precludes religious organizations from legal existence, it is more for political purposes than theological ones. Churches have power over the people. The two major communistic governments of the world sought to remove power from all but the state. Hence the eradication of religious groups. Keep in mind however that the Greek Orthodox church continued to exist in some form during the entire reign of Soviet Communism, and although it was repressed so does Buddhism in China. Plus in Stalinist Russia, atheists and Christians were executed or tortured in the gulags, usually for being political rivals of Stalin or his regime.

… and yet I’M goign to hell for wanting to read it along side it’s sister books the Bible and the Tohrah

    Actually… I’d rephrase that, just a little.

It’s my understanding that both the Bible and the Koran use the Torah for their foundations.

From our good friends at Wiki…

The Torah is the first of three parts of the Tanakh (i.e. Hebrew Bible), the founding religious document of Judaism, and is divided into five books, whose names in English are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy…

It is also my understanding that all three religions claim the same lineage of prophets, going back to Abraham… where they differ is on the subject matter of Christ, himself…

    Jews think he’s a nobody…

Mooooooooslims say, “Yeah, he’s a prophet, but just one of many…”

And Christians claim “He’s Da Man… Da Son O’ God! ‘N Da Only One!”

Doesn’t seem worth dying over, let alone fighting over…

    But that’s just me…
It’d be more accurate to say the Bible and Koran are the endlessly bickering offspring of the Torah…

  128. Xisithrus says:

    The Unhealthy Motivations of conservatives

    By Curtis Francy Pants
In general, low self-esteem and a lack of self-love are the basis for the ideology of conservatives
conservatives are those who would use government to reduce the freedoms of some people to provide benefits for others. conservatives argue for jeffersonian equality for all people, but neither is possible. Other than identical twins, all people are genetically different, and without exception, each has unique life experiences that are interpreted differently. We are necessarily and naturally unequal in a worldly sense. (If “all men are created equal” in a Godly sense, nothing more needs to be done to ensure it.) conservatives, fascists, communists, and statists seek similar means to the same end. They want control of an expansive, intrusive government using taxation, regulation, and takeover of private property and businesses to achieve an earthly equality — an equality that is unnatural, unhealthy, and unattainable. This irrational political ideology is rooted in psychological shortcomings.
The U.S. Constitution correctly identifies the purpose of government as protecting the freedoms of its people. Being free is the natural state of all lifeforms. Soldiers risk their lives and die fighting for freedom…not equality. The Statue of Liberty welcomes those “yearning to breathe free.”
Having an internalized sense of being less than others drives a desire for equality. The conservatives theocrats internal motivation is: “If we are all the same, I can’t be less.” From a practical perspective, making people or situations equal involves punishing the successful; which can be a welcome expression of jealous anger for those with low self-esteem.
Having low self-esteem makes freedom something to fear. Freedom means being free to succeed or fail. For those with a low sense of self, the expectation is that one’s failure is inevitable. Freedom is not desirable under those conditions.
conservatives personal problems become a societal problem when conservatives try to address them by requiring changes to the lives of others. They seek a government with extensive power and reach that can limit freedoms and penalize success so that we seem to be more equal. It’s as if I were to address a problem of poor posture by requiring everyone else to slouch. The adequacy of self-love or self-esteem one has is not determined by comparison to others. It is not measured by net worth, which government can adjust. Whether one has healthy levels of self-love and self-esteem is determined by personal physiology and psychology. No matter how much government can disrupt the lives of its citizens, it cannot make anyone love or esteem themselves more or make anyone happy.
What conservatives really need — greater self-esteem and self-love — government is completely powerless to provide.
Given their motivations, statements, and actions, conservative politicians and their supporters can be understood through awareness of the common characteristics of those with a low sense of self.
    Low Sense of Self Characteristics
    Feelings About Self

    * Has a general sense of unhappiness, depression, unease, malaise
    * Feels a victim, largely powerless
    * Fears looking foolish and is unable to laugh at self
    * Afraid of forming own opinion and having it challenged
    * Takes disagreements as personal affronts, seeks revenge
    * Prone to rapid and sudden anger or sadness
    * Seeks to suppress “bad” emotions; afraid they may become all-consuming

    Thoughts about Self

    * Tends towards negative attitude and pessimism
    * Lacks confidence in self
    * Rigid
    * Blind to unpleasant realities, delusional
    * Over-dependence on people or things
    * Inability to accept criticism

    Presenting Self to Others

    * Secretive
    * Exaggerates, pretends, and lies to conceal insecurity
    * Arrogant and boastful (intended to appear self-confident) or extremely shy (to avoid inspection)
    * Cool, detached, aloof (intended to appear “in control”)
    * Uses language for its emotive value to persuade others
    * Seeks first for others to connect with him/her emotionally
    * Denies mistakes and blames others when things for which he/she is responsible go badly
    * Takes credit for others’ achievements
    * Irrational (psychology trumps philosophy)
    * Breaks agreements, violates professed standards, hypocritical
    * Performs poorly in pressure situations

    Perception of Others

    * Projects own inadequacies and motives onto others
    * Sees others as impotent victims
    * Jealous and envious of others, especially those perceived as having a high sense of self
    * Fear of or hostility towards others, blaming others for own inner state

    Relationships with Others

    * Drawn to others with a low sense of self
    * Has difficulty loving others
    * Seeks control and power over others
    * Outwardly aggressive or passively aggressive
    * Discards people when they become a personal liability

    Efforts at Self-Improvement

    * Does not seek self-improvement, as it requires acknowledging one is currently lacking
    * Lacks self-discipline
    * Closed-minded, unwilling to accept new ideas
    * Tends to have addictions — they serve as personal distractions

Our sense of self-value is rooted in our childhood, nurtured by the love and affirmation we received from our parental figures. Consider the nation’s leading conservative, newt gingrich, and how he embodies nearly all the characteristics of a person with a low sense of self. rush limbaugh, another leading conservative, had three failed marriages, and apparently was a drug addicr.
Gingrich childhood included an early abandonment by his father; abandonment by his stepfather; abandonment by his mother; frequent moves so he could not develop long-term childhood friendships. Glenn Beck and Limbaugh predictably turned to illegal drugs (marijuana and hill billy heroin)and remains addicted to drugs. With this background, he could not escape being seriously psychologically damaged. From his behaviors and relationships, it is clear that limbaugh has not successfully addressed his inner deprivations.
The conservatives emotional neediness leads them to identify and experience a bonding with others who also have low self-esteem and low self-love. Collectively, they long for a greater sense of self and strive to attain it by achieving equality among people using the power of an ever-growing government and irrational arguments (for equality and against freedom) that they find emotionally compelling.

  136. Marie says:

Really – if one would do a little reading, one would learn that the origins of religion are all in the fear of natural forces, to which “gifts” were offered in an attempt to appease the wind, or rain, or lightening or whatever was scaring the homosapiens.
From time to time various tribes, or groups, would build an idol and make sacrifices to appease their god or gods, and that would eventually aggravate another group who thought their god or idols were better. (My god is bigger than your god, and I will kill you if you try to remove my idol.)
Religious rites and practices evolved from primitive beliefs.

What I observe today is a evolution of the same kind of superstition, and shamanism that has been with us from the start of humanity. It is all man-made – our human brains cannot comprehend eternity – we need to put everything in terms relative to our ability to understand – so we develop “faith” because one doesn’t need facts — only a belief.

Ok, I’m going to break my silence for a moment and address this.

    ARE YOU CRAZY?

    NAZIS BURN BOOKS MORON.

    NOT AMERICANS.

I could give a rats a$$ about your self serving image of your atheist superiority, but when you start talking about BURNING BOOKS, then you’ve gone and lost your mind.

Who cares if you “like” whats in them?

Who CARES if you “believe” whats in them?

The BURNING OF BOOKS is the mark of a true fascist, and a low down dirty PIG.

Anyone who would BURN BOOKS should just go ahead and toss themselves in along with them.

    Because Americans don’t burn books.

Around here if you talk about God you get voted down. Tell me how that’s different then burning Bibles?

That’s because a handful of “regulars” who also happen to see their atheist beliefs as superior to the beliefs of others have no problem practicing bigotry, as long as its against people of faith.

They control this blog, and they shout down and drive off anyone who doesn’t bow to their atheist dogmas.

We’re left with not much of a choice in this country now.

Either side with the dark, demonic right wing who heralds their bastardized version of Christianity, or side with the dark, demonic atheist bullies, who have as little tolerance for people of faith as the evangelicals have for them.

When they can prove that claim, then they’ll be a fact based system.

But if you mean the constant whining by atheists at having to hear a prayer, or have someone say Merry Christmas, or Happy Hannakuh to them, then grow up and quit bellyaching.

We’ve been living in a multicultural and multi faith society for a long time now, and thats only going to increase so if you want to live here, quit whining about the beliefs of others and learn some tolerance and a little maturity.

When we see someone professing a doctrine that we find silly or juvenile, the REASONABLE ADULT simply smiles to himself and ignores it.

Whiny babies cry about having to hear Merry Christmas, or Happy Kwanza at the department store.

What do you mean “your book”? I don’t “have a book” there Flavius, so I’m not sure why you’re arguing the bible with me as I’m neither defending nor condemning it.

I seem to have this amazing ability to tolerate peoples beliefs, as long as they don’t involve hurting people.

The Jehovah’s witnesses knocking on my door once or twice a year in no way infringes on my freedom, life or liberty and thus I’m mature enough to smile and say “no thank you”.

If you’re referring to Communism, then true, it has. But genocide and dictatorshops have also been produced repeatedly by Christianity. And Islam, for that matter. Also, other economic belief systems like Feudalism, Mercantilism and Capitalism. Frankly, just about anything that people have believed in has been used as an excuse to slaughter people en masse.

So what’s your point? Maybe you should do something about that log in your eye while you’re whining about the mote in mine.

    What is a “dictatorshop”?

As for genocide being committed by Christianity, NOT BY THE METHODISTS LIVING DOWN THE STREET. Or the Jews at the local synagogue. Or the other HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF RELIGIOUS PEOPLE in this country.

So you give it a rest.

Enough of your faux victimization and bogus outright lies about most religious people.

The religious people in THIS BLOG, who have been driven off over the years by the atheist a$$holes who think they’re the non-gods gift to the world, are NOT committing mass genocide.

Which means your ridiculous accusations in response to my comments about them reveal a prime example of the anti-religious bigotry that dominates this blog.

Because people like you can actually with a straight face come in and starting whining about mass genocide in response to comments about showing a little tolerance for the people of faith in here, proving you are nothing more than a bigot who portrays events out of context and attributes the actions of SOME people the an ENTIRE GROUP.

I’ve been making the same point for years in here, and many times with the likes of you.

The point stupid, is bigotry works both ways, and yours is no better than theirs.

Its the same whether its an evangelical bigot calling a gay man evil nazi, or a self proclaimed “progressive” calling a religious person a fool, or a “child believing in fairy tales”.

When you gang up on a group of people, harass, intimidate, and generally drive them off simply because of their beliefs, then the US Govt says your a low down dirty, ugly, “bigot”.

  191. Doc Shabbit ["Banned By the Huffington Post for your Comfort and Convenience"] says:

That’s lovely El Bruce, but once again quoting scriptures to me to defend an attack on religious people for proselyting is erroneous, since I am neither advocating or denouncing any of their positions, as you well know by now. But you want to “pretend” that I am a religious person, simply because I was brought up in a religious family and actually learned something about the bible and respect the beliefs of others, as well as their right to believe them and discuss them in a civil venue without being constantly lambasted by the peanut gallery.

And as for your scriptural knowledge, it too is observably lacking.

    Observe.

Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.”

    Acts 13:46-47

Before you try using the theists scriptures against them, you might want to first try knowing something about them.

    http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=138967996133677

This preacher intends to lead a National Burn The Quran Day. Personally I believe that everyone is responsible for their own actions, and that God is the ultimate judge of a person, and not any particular individual. While this kind of action is indeed wrong, burning of ANY book, we must understand that God knows all i…ncluding everyone’s intentions, and therefore, instead of reacting with bitterness or condemnation, we should strive to engage in positive action and show solidarity with our Christian, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, non-faith, and etc. brothers and sisters. Therefore, I propose that on September 11th, we fight the forces of hate, on ALL sides, and read a passage from the Bible, the Torah, the Quran, and the book of any other religion that you may not know so much about to promote tolerance and understanding.

MLK said something to the effect that understanding is the road to peace.

In this world, too often, ignorance prevails, and group goals and agendas supersede the idea of a common humanity.

Together we can condemn the attackers of September 11 and continued acts of hatred while promoting peace.

Please invite as many people as you can, this is an inter-faith effort, and show the minority forces of hate that permeate through all religions and ideologies that they will not skew the basis of morality; a common humanity within us all.

When we get enough people we can come up with a plan to organize rallies and gatherings to make this work out!

I wish I could vote up your comment a thousand times. Its an excellent comment and clears the air of all the neocon dogma on the right, and all the misinformation being promulgated by the atheists, on the left.

The right wing has bastardized the gospel Jesus taught, and have completely turned it around.

For example, Jesus taught his followers that they should be as wise as wolves, yet harmless as doves.

But the evangelicals led by people like Sarah Palin (when did she get ordained?) and Glenn Beck teach that Christians should be as dumb as a dove, and as harmful as a wolf.

Its the complete opposite of what he taught.

    A reverse gospel, or…if you will….a form of “anti-Christ”.

It would be nice if more Christians like yourself started speaking up, and denouncing this right wing gospel of hate and instructing people in what was actually taught.

I make no apologies for being a revenge driven individual. My dad, who was a Christian, taught me that if someone does something to you then you do it right back to him. When I reminded him that Christians were to turn the other cheek, he said I could do that if I wanted to get hit on that side to. With that said, I so badly wanted to start my own on-line protest and burn a Bible. Then I remembered the teachings of my mother and her family, who are Northern African Muslims. She told me that hating people is a waste of time and energy because the people that you hate will never know that you do and you’ll live your life consumed by that hate and that I should let it go. I find it hard to do that in this circumstance, but this dude is irrelevant and he’s just trying to bring attention to himself and his lagging book sales. Let him burn the Koran. It’s funny that they would spend money on this, considering our current economic times.
