Sistani Bows Out

There have been a lot of ins-and-outs to the Iraq debate and a lot of silly things said. The silliest period, though, by my money was the “Arab Spring” craze in early 2005 after the elections in Iraq. It was quite clear by that point that, elections or no, the situation in Iraq was actually really, really bad. Nevertheless, people got it into their heads that this was actually a giant victory and that, in particular, Grand Ayatollah Sistani was going to turn into a silver bullet, capable of not only saving Iraq but somehow bringing about regime change in Teheran as well. You guys all remember that, right? Well, now comes this:

The most influential moderate Shia leader in Iraq has abandoned attempts to restrain his followers, admitting that there is nothing he can do to prevent the country sliding towards civil war.

Aides say Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani is angry and disappointed that Shias are ignoring his calls for calm and are switching their allegiance in their thousands to more militant groups which promise protection from Sunni violence and revenge for attacks.

Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani “I will not be a political leader any more,” he told aides. “I am only happy to receive questions about religious matters.”

This via Jonah Goldberg who remarks that it “will take some time to digest, but . . . sure doesn’t sound good.” I guess my ex ante outlook was sufficiently bleak that hearing this doesn’t make things look notably bleaker.

The Cult Spreads

Scroll down and you’ll find Bill Simmons’ thoughts on The Wire — long story short, he, like everyone else, thinks it’s great. If you haven’t seen it yet, you really must. Kevin Carey at The Quick and the Ed (education policy blog) promises that he’ll be doing Wire-blogging throughout Season 4 to comment on the show’s presentation of inner-city school stuff. I think what the world really needs is for Mark Kleiman to start watching and blogging.

Santorum Tells Casey His Dead Father ‘Would Be Very Upset’ With Him

Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) debated challenger Bob Casey today on Meet the Press. As Atrios first noted, Santorum said during the debate, “I think his father would be very upset if, if he were alive today and, and heard him be supportive of something like this.” Watch it:

Bob Casey’s father, Robert Casey, was governor of Pennsylvania from 1987-1995. He died in 2000 at age 68 after a 10-year struggle with amyloidosis, “a genetic condition where proteins invade and destroy bodily organs.”

Dole Stumped When Asked To Name Anyone Who Believes ‘The Terrorists Can Be Appeased’

Sec. Rumsfeld last week compared Iraq war critics to Hitler appeasers. This morning on Fox News, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) was asked to name someone — anyone — who actually believes “the terrorists can be appeased.” She couldn’t do it.

Instead, she went on an extended rant criticizing those who have “raised concerns” about the PATRIOT Act, the “Terrorist Surveillance Program” (i.e., warrantless domestic spying), and the missile defense system. The host then asked Dole whether that “goes to the level” of appeasement. She dodged the question a second time. Watch it:

World Championship Retrospective

First off, congratulations to Spain on their gold medal win over Greece. Second, I got a chance to watch the USA-Greece game last evening before heading out and having seen it, the precise manner of Team USA’s loss makes it rather than surprising than one might have thought. In essence, as some people told me in comments, the Americans did a poor job of defending the pick and roll while the Greek team was clearly having an “on” night and executed brilliantly in terms of making sure to hit their open shots.

Santorum: ‘I Think The Focus Should Not Be Iraq, It Should Be Iran’

This morning on Meet the Press, Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) claimed, “I think the focus should not be Iraq, it should be Iran.” Watch it:

It’s clear why Santorum wants to take public attention off the deeply unpopular war in Iraq. The problem is that President Bush’s failing policy there is one of the main factors empowering Iran in the region. As the British think tank Chatham House noted in its recent report:

The wars and continued weaknesses in Afghanistan and Iraq have further strengthened Iran, their most powerful immediate neighbour, which maintains significant involvement in its ‘near-abroad’. The US-driven agenda for confronting Iran is severely compromised by the confident ease with which Iran sits in its region.

U.S. security requires having effective policies in both Iraq and Iran. Right now we don’t have either.

Kristol: ‘Bush Should Pardon Libby. He Should Do it Now’

Today on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said, “Bush should pardon [former Cheney Chief of Staff Scooter] Libby. He should do it now. It would be fantastic.”

Libby has been charged with obstructing justice, making false statements to a grand jury and perjury. Kristol, however, asserted that Libby was only indicted because special prosecutor was “totally out of control” and “had to indict someone.” He added that Libby “didn’t lie in any serious meaning of lying before a grand jury.” Watch it:
