McCain Hires Key Falwell Staffer For Presidential Campaign

McCain and FalwellIn 2000, John McCain called Jerry Falwell an “agent of intolerance.” Now, he has hired the debate coach from Falwell’s Liberty University, Brett O’Donnell, to advise him on his communications strategy. O’Donnell has been executing Falwell’s strategy to train scores of debaters to confront “the culture on moral default.”

Falwell said the hiring should not be considered an endorsement:

The Rev. Jerry Falwell, chancellor of the Lynchburg university, said he has not endorsed a candidate, and O’Donnell’s appointment should not be interpreted as a signal that he is backing McCain…”Senator McCain is getting a real winner, and I’m sure Brett will be a great help to him,” Falwell said. “He’s getting Brett at the peak of his production.”

McCain also delivered the commencement address at Liberty University this summer.

On The Road

I’m in Philadelphia today, which is why I haven’t been blogging. The President is on a trip to:

But Mr. Bush is not staying overnight in the world’s most populous Muslim nation, which Washington has portrayed as a critical test in the struggle to promote moderate, democratic Islamic states. The Secret Service said it was too dangerous, so he will spend the night in Hawaii.

This sort of thing is hardly dispositive, but you can’t take it as a good sign when the president’s policies are so hated in the Muslim world that he regards it as unsafe to stay overnight in Muslim countries.

O’Reilly: ‘Far Left Loons’ Are Linking Fox News With O.J. Interview On Orders From ‘Their Internet Masters’

On Thursday, ThinkProgress noted that Bill O’Reilly — trying to distance himself from Fox’s upcoming interview with O.J. Simpson — falsely claimed “Fox Broadcasting has nothing to do with the Fox News Channel.” In fact, the two entites have the same chairman (Roger Ailes), the same owner (Rupert Murdoch) and Fox Broadcasting regularly airs Fox News content.

Last night, Bill O’Reilly attacked the “far left loons” who are linking Fox News with the O.J. Simpson interview. According to O’Reilly, these people are “kool-aid zombies” who are “doing the bidding of far left fanatics who will do anything to disparage me and FNC.” Watch it:

O'Reilly Screen Shot

Oddly, O’Reilly attacked the New York Times and CBS for not covering the story. Apparently, the appropriate response to an interview O’Reilly calls “a low point in American culture” is to lavish media attention on it. At least that is what Fox News is doing.

Nature Red In Tooth and Claw

deadrat.jpg

I was trying to go to sleep when the dogs decided to be extremely loud downstairs. What was up? Well, Wreck was clamoring to be allowed into the back yard. So I let him go. Once outside the source of the commotion became clear — a large rat was about. Wreck attacked, and dispatched him with considerably greater speed than during the lengthy — yet legendary — Dog Versus Crab episode. The results are rather gruesome, but all else being equal the world seems better off with one less live rat. Spencer’s dog Kingsley seemed uninterested in the whole thing and observed from the safety of the kitchen.

Culture

Best. Team. Ever.

Charlie Pierce disputes my view that the ’96 Bulls were the best team ever, citing a variety of older teams as superior. I’m not really sure you can meaningfully try and compare teams from the 60s and 70s (’64 Celtics, ’67 76ers, ’72 Lakers) to more modern teams but his favorite choice is the ’86 Celtics (he’s a Bostonian after all) which, conveniently enough, is closer in time.

Still, it’s hard to know how you run these arguments. I don’t have any particular investment in the claim that the ’96 Bulls were the best other than the fact that in a straightforward numbers game kind of way they really did win the most games, have the best point differential, the best efficiency, etc. An actual game between the ’86 Celtics and ’96 Bulls would, I think, come down to the sharply contrasting styles — the Boston team was way faster. This becomes one of those situations where the team that dictates the pace probably wins the game. My sense is that matchups of that sort tend, all else being equal, to favor slower teams. But what’s the case for the Celtics. Let’s not merely intone — Bird! Parish! McHale! — those are great players, but the Bulls had great players, too. Folks more familiar with these squads (especially the Celtics team) than I can dig into the weeds.
