In A World Of Chaos, You’ll Be The First To Go»

This Los Angeles Times story suggests that Najaf is the new Basra: multifaceted chaos, scheming, violence and mutual suspicion. The Najafi clerics who’ve always hated and resented Sadr appear to be attempting a push. And it’ll probably backfire!

Three days into the Basra campaign, Grand Ayatollah Najafi issued a fatwa, or religious opinion or edict, that declared the Iraqi government as the only force in the country with the right to bear arms.

His son, Sheik Ali Najafi, left little doubt that the clergy had backed the Iraqi army operations.

“We see this as a positive improvement. . . . The people want the government to control the streets and the law to be enforced. No other groups,” he said, sitting in his study, furnished with cushions, a laptop and a clock bearing his father’s portrait.

Their stance is a gamble. An influential cleric who is knowledgeable about talks between the Sadr movement and the grand ayatollahs described the situation in bleak terms: The government is weak, and Sadr aides now acknowledge privately that they have lost control of members who are receiving support from Iran.

“There are groups in the Mahdi Army who are kidnapping, killing and stealing. They don’t listen to Muqtada. They are openly operating with Iranian interests,” he said.

The cleric asked that his name not be used because he feared assassination.

Wonder why that is. Meanwhile, in a supremely wise and responsible move, Condi Rice this morning dared Sadr to bust that gat:

“I know he’s sitting in Iran,” Rice said dismissively, when asked about al-Sadr’s latest threat to lift a self-imposed cease-fire with government and U.S. forces. “I guess it’s all-out war for anybody but him,” Rice said. “I guess that’s the message; his followers can go [to] their deaths and he’s in Iran.”

So Sadr is a coward for making threats from Iran… and Condoleezza Rice is a stateswoman for blustering Sadr into making a move that carries the potential of killing American soldiers. Why is this woman respected again?

Update: Brandon Friedman at VetVoice observes:

I don’t think there’s any question that this echoes George W. Bush’s provocative invitation for terrorists around the world to descend on Iraq when he declared, “Bring’em on” in July 2003. And we all know how that worked out.

“…..Why is this woman respected again?”

Because in a politically correct environment populated by its’ submissive, brain addled adherents, she is a diversity hire; a Russo-Czech military expert (how we need those in these trying times), with one laughable book to her sorry name.

Oh yes, and the Deciderist Groks her style. I hear she’s VP material as well since she’s sure to reel in the ??????? vote.

Don’t forget she had a supertanker named after her by Chevron. How much more weighty can you get?

No one will point out the irony of this statement to Ms Bucktooth. Perhaps she should pick up a weapon and stay there.

Just what the world needs - a tone-deaf pianist.

Given the multiple attacks on the Green Zone today which at minimum resulted in shrapnel injuries (WaPo)
it’s not surprising Condi taunted and ran … meanwhile a contact in Iraq reports: “By our very conservative count we make 87 Iraqis Killed, 63 Wounded of which by 8 am this morning Baghdad time 8 were killed and 22 wounded in American airstrikes on Sadr city during Saturday night and around dawn.”

sigh… i realize that crudity is easy, cheap, and often counter-productive… however… after watching her ferragamo-shod highness in action for lo these many years, the only phrase that comes to mind is “worthless as teats on a boar”…

And, yes, I DO take it personally

I’ll presume that Rice’s charges of cowardice were made from the mean streets of Bethesda.

Seriously? If any Democrat had been the National Security Advisor on 9/11, his or her career would have been instantly over, even before it became publicly known that there was a memo floating around entitled “Al Qaeda determined to strike in
United States”. It’s just great that we have an administration that has a 100-0 ratio in terms of weight loyalty versus competence.

Really, how much time has Condi spent on the front line? Listen, Condi, you pathetic scum, go pick up an M16 yourself and get out there, or keep your ignorant mouth shut.
