I actually never set foot in the State Department before today, and sure enough I got lost in between a mini-press conference and a conference-conference. But I did manage to learn something! You know how many people the State Department has in Afghanistan that speak Pashto, the primary Afghan language? Two.

I often fantasize that there’s an incentive program somewhere to bribe/subsidize/encourage interested students or professionals to study Arabic or Farsi or Pashto or Turkmen, but I’ve never found such a thing. Zany.

well, in fairness to the State Dept, Dari is the lingua franca of Afghanistan, although Pashto is spoken by a lot of people. I would assume that State has a lot of Dari (aka Farsi or Persian) speakers.
