I lived in Isla Vista, right next to UC-Santa Barbara, in 1972. The Republicans did it in that election. I thought it was kind of weird to get an advertisement in the mail from a stock brokerage firm. I read about the caging later in the newspaper. Keep in mind that everybody in Isla Vista moved about every six weeks and the Post Office wouldn't deliver the mail unless your name was on the mail-box. Lots of Isla Vistans would be living at the address where they were registered to vote and yet the GOP's letter would be returned. McGovern carried Isla Vista by waaaay more than 50%.
